strange responce jakenjoi. I am a professional musician and these guys are tight. We need more great live performing bands that don't lip-sync. great video..Thanks
The Fruit Bats, I might add, are a great band for people who like the Shins and are looking for new music. Spelled in Bones is one of the awesomest albums of all time.
@lebarosky: i know what you mean. i think people hang their sound on certain songs, like for example the song "weird devide" off oh inverted world sounds a lot like beach boys. but things songs has more of an REM folksy feeling to it. the most important thing is that mercers voice and songwriting skills makes for a very particular sound that only reminds us of the shins. id like to hear a new album from that camp soon.
another great invention of portland, oregon. let's see microbreweries, light rail, medicinal weed, the shins (among many others)...yes, truly, a great place to live.
@zkhandwala Are you talking about the C5 note, because that should be pretty reachable for someone like James Mercer, because his range sounds to me like a tenor (I may be wrong)?
Shes not, squiremarr is right. Viva Voce is a two person band that toured with The Shins after "Wicing the Night Away" was released. Very talented group, worth checking out.
People keep saying that they are influenced by power pop/Beach Boys. Yeah, that's like saying Mozart was influenced by Hayden. This group is brilliant. They sound "like" nobody I've ever heard before. Their lyrics are unique and mesh with their melodic themes in a quirky way that is entirely fresh. Ok I'm done.
Ironically not only was this great band actually influenced by the Beach Boys and many others, but Mozart was actually influenced by Haydn (correct spelling). So your comment stands, but not in the way you think! That doesn't mean these guys are bad etc. I don't hear them 'ripping off' any tunes (at least I haven't yet), but they get some melodic ideas, some sonic / mixing ideas here and there from various bands, like other bands do. I do also think they have a fresh sound.
If you can send me a link to Pavement song with an actual MELODY I might believe you. I listened to an entire Pavement album and then half of another one without hearing much actual music. I would have listened to all their albums but gave up. Maybe their new stuff is better, but would likely post-date the Shins.
I'll agree with you that MTV is pretty much a load of commercial shit. Still though, there are some genuine bands that make their way onto it, and can you really blame them for doing so? As long as it doesn't ruin the music (and for me it hasn't) I have no problems with that.
I guess I just don't understand the level to which you think they're awesome. It's clearly somewhere between "gods on earth" and "made of elements not listed in the periodic table" correct me if I'm wrong
These people actually have to earn money too. So they're on TV/radio, boohoo. How does this make them sellouts? Just listen to the music and lyrics, and it's obvious The Shins are very much a genuine band.
Sorry, I love the shins, but look at Wilco. Shows give your band money. And Wilco sells out every show in about an hours time. They are probably more successful than ever since they stopped making music videos and crap like that. Don't get me wrong I love the shins, just saying its possible to make money w/out tv. MTV kills music, havn't watched it in about 2 years and I couldn't be happier.
Boring? Are you kidding? Go listen to the studio version of this song. It is brilliant. Lyrics that are actually intelligent. Or there's Fallout Boy and the rest of the crappy commercialized radio muck. How 'bout Paul on the keys?
2024 and still one of the best songs ever!
The Shins may be the best band... In the world
Awesome song. And the lady singing with James is gorgeous.
A masterpiece song... especially the bridge....

Dude nooo way, her vocal harmonies are one of my favorites parts about this song.
The Paul Schaeffer band is rocking really sweetly!

Nice to see Paul Shaffer rocking out on keys here with the rest of the band!
you are correct sir
melhor performance no late show do ano.
Good Song -
yeah, i know mercer is from NM. but the band found their groove here. we own them now! ;)
James Mercer is pitch perfect as always...pure brilliance
for sure
the shins are the greatest band ever spawned ever
Yeah, nice spot :)
if by crap you mean AWESOME
@lebarosky: i know what you mean. i think people hang their sound on certain songs, like for example the song "weird devide" off oh inverted world sounds a lot like beach boys. but things songs has more of an REM folksy feeling to it. the most important thing is that mercers voice and songwriting skills makes for a very particular sound that only reminds us of the shins. id like to hear a new album from that camp soon.
I'm on ancient TH-cam again
@MegaCamper1 It's a 1960 Les Paul Double Cutaway.
almost certain that's a Guild S-100, you can tell by the headstock. The body is an SG copy.
I'm falling in love with Anita!!
Does James Mercer really hit a high C in this song?? I knew he had some kind of range, but that's almost unheard of in indie music these days.
His delivery is just too unique to be done on command. It was still a very nice video, and I love the song, though.
240p we meet again...
I love the singing in this version compared to the record one. Much more character.
Favorite part of this is Eric Johnson from Fruit Bats casually playing background guitar.
another great invention of portland, oregon. let's see microbreweries, light rail, medicinal weed, the shins (among many others)...yes, truly, a great place to live.
@zkhandwala Are you talking about the C5 note, because that should be pretty reachable for someone like James Mercer, because his range sounds to me like a tenor (I may be wrong)?
The Shins and Beirut started in Albuquerque and relocated as soon as they had the money
totally agree with you, from what I can tell her voice sounds amazing. who is she??
Shes not, squiremarr is right. Viva Voce is a two person band that toured with The Shins after "Wicing the Night Away" was released. Very talented group, worth checking out.
The Shins are awesome, I'm kind of a poser since I just discovered them a couple months ago. (I was like, 7 when they were Flake Music).
Peter's tie Peter's tie!!
Anita from Viva Voce is hot! Great song.
Mercer has said in interviews that he is influenced largely by New Wave bands, specifically Echo & The Bunnymen.
fond of y-o-u
they're from albuquerque
As far as I'm concerned The Shins can do no wrong..
Mercer looks so young here
where are they from? i really like em.
Makes Paul Mcartney sit up and blink. WOW
I've never seen James Mercer and Kevin Spacey in the same room. #suspicious
Is the video of them performing this song on Conan O'Brien still up? I liked that one better for some reason... this one is still good though.

@Daarko15 true.
I Love these people to death.
Didn't know Sheldon was the lead singer of The Shins.
@lebarosky the only influence by beach boys is about the bass player, he looks like brian wilson!! xDD
Every band ever ripped of Pavement.
If you can send me a link to Pavement song with an actual MELODY I might believe you.
I listened to an entire Pavement album and then half of another one without hearing much actual music.
I would have listened to all their albums but gave up.
Maybe their new stuff is better, but would likely post-date the Shins.
Peters tie peters tie!!
@ryanfoley123
But the Shins are still fucking awesome. :P
Besides, Pet Sounds is an unfair comparison for just about any band.
Does he rimind anyone else of David Byrne (talking heads)
Is that Jimmy Fallon on lead guitar?
looks a lot like ben gibbard playing acoustic off to the side.
what kind of guitar is james mercer playing?
I heard the lead singer has a crush on his daughter's best friend
Jeez Dave get some hand sanitizer and just shake their damn hands.
yah
Is that Neko Case? Because she doesn't seem to know the words.
JAMES MERCER IS REALLY COOL, ALSO HOT
she was a awesome voice, but why is she there? and by that i mean how does she know james mercer?
Don't get down on the Beach Boys. The Shins haven't ever done anything as good as Pet Sounds.
This song is great, Phantom Limb and Australia too. But i think the new album is not as great as the first two..
I think that is ben gibbard, they cover each others stuff live and stuff, so not a streatch really.
Chris Kattan? lol, Yeah it does
Is it me or does the chick COMPLETELY kill it? James Mercer can sing without her just fine...
If by 'kill it' you mean nail the harmony parts, then yes, she does nail the harmony parts and it's really nice!
That is ben. portland's finest in nyc. now only if they would PLAY in portland more than one night. yah-yah, i know. buy me a ticket for an airplane.

marty looks like jimmy fallon in the beginning of the song.
@ohiocaps52 Anita Robinson
I guess I just don't understand the level to which you think they're awesome. It's clearly somewhere between "gods on earth" and "made of elements not listed in the periodic table"
correct me if I'm wrong
lol "rock and roll band"

I believe they kicked out the drummer because he didn't look like anyone famous.
Boring? Are you kidding? Go listen to the studio version of this song. It is brilliant. Lyrics that are actually intelligent. Or there's Fallout Boy and the rest of the crappy commercialized radio muck. How 'bout Paul on the keys?
great band great songwriters but lousy performing live.
why are all of the successful portland bands so boring? i guess i'll understand this music when i'm 40.
Just tune out the lyrics and listen to the melody.
Actually, I think the lyrics are pretty great, but if you don't, listen to the rest of it.
