Kurt Dahle left the New Pornographers after. “Brill Bruisers” for some 15 years he lent the New Pornographers a distinct sound. He has a unique immediately identifiable style/sound. He was replaced by current NP drummer Joe Seiders.
You said it. Your ears prick up from 0:59s to 1:10s. From there, it just gets better and better. I love how the elevated stage is swinging back and forth during this time though. Lots of excitement during this performance.
Yeah saw them in person a few months ago and fell in love with Kathryn. She came out and set up her own station before the concert. And she does this weird dance with her arm behind her back.
Great performance. The in studio sound must have been incredible (Letterman's crew and Paul S made sure the sound was optimum). I am convinced Carl Newman is as good an arranger as there is--(Brian Wilson and Stanley and Wiggs from St Etienne, Nile Rodgers et al). He also writes incredible songs especially the melodies and the vocal arrangements!
@823south Kurt Dahle is a superhero back there. One of the best drummers working today and really integral to the band. Listen to Bleeding Heart Show again, and bask in his awesomeness.
The first album I got to know from The New Pornographers and couldn't stop listening. And I was so happy to find out at that time that they had other albums previously released!
Sometime's Carl's lyrics blow my mind, even if they don't necessarily make sense. Mass Romantic? Just brilliant. You can get away with anything with a tune like that.
I love this band...heard it on the kindle commercial....thought they were saying we talk we talk...lol.....love it so much!!! so good to see they were on letterman...hope they get more shows etc
I saw Neko Case with the Sadies about 20 years ago. She was beautiful, talented AND funny. "Boy it's hot here in Pittsburgh," she told the audience. "It's so hot that my eggs have fused together!"
@101Volts I saw them the night before you, in Milwaukee of June 12th. It was the first time I've seen them, but have seen Neko solo before. I could not have been happier. Hoping to see them again in Chicago in August if I can somehow land tickets. Glad you enjoyed, too. I will check out your video.
@thebatdad71 Couldn't agree with you more. Saw TNP last year on tour and could not stop watching him. Great drummer and fun to watch as well (amazing facial gestures)
Having just seen them all in Chapel Hill last Friday night, I'm pretty sure the clappers were members from the two opening acts on this tour (The Duchess & the Duke...The Dodos).
Thanks a ton, They're my favorite band and I had the pleasure to see them live. (June 13th 2010!) It was my first concert and I don't think I could have chosen a better concert as my first. I enjoyed every song they played, Sang along (Sometimes too loud) To every song and jumped too much when they started playing Moves, Bumping into two people in front of me who didn't mind much. I apologized later. (Also, You can hear me singing along to Myriad Harbour in a video here on YT - Its around 2:41)
+Hugh Leung To be fair, the four clapping in the back are part of another band and were touring with TNP at the time of this recording. They're not from the bands "The Dutchess and the Duke" or "The Dodos" who were also touring with TNP in the same year, though.
how can i get a gig as one of the clappers? it's a good thing they have 4 back there, cause 3 would just make it feel like it was lacking something. the new album is fantastic by the way.
@101Volts Carl Newman claimed, via Twitter, it's a NY band called Bird of Youth, as well a friend simply known as Skippy. Gotta take his word for it. He would know. But you're right. That one guy looks so much like the dud fro D & D.
So because one band member isn't from Canada, then it's no longer a Canadian band? Seems a bit too strict to me. And if it's not a Canadian band, then what country are you going to relate it to? Nup, they're a Canadian band, and that's that.
@thebatdad71 It was amazing seeing them live. I still felt singing to each song the next day, My throat was worn out. Also, The video I'm talking about isn't my video, Its from a site named Ohio Rocks. Right now I'm not sure if that was me at 2:39 or so (Its sounding more like Dan to me now) Oh well. You can see me in that video for a moment though, I waved my hands around at about 0:29.
@thomasmoredamian...We all have our blind spots. I don't think there's anything wrong with your opinion. My wife LOVES Neko, but is lukewarm on TNP. Me, I don't get The White Stripes. Like you I feel nothing. Talented, influential and important, no doubt, but I just don't get it. TWS are bigger and more influential than TNP but they toured hard as hell behind the CD and I think they could really break when the next CD rolls around. But it is what it is. Thanks for commenting.
@jw1293 My bad. I thought for sure I recognized the one fellow as being from D & D. AC Tweeted earlier exactly what Monolithishy said. Apologies for my part in misidentifying those folks here.
@jw1293 I saw them in Atlanta June 26 and NP said that the next night's show in Nashville would be sad it because would be their last show with D&D. Just an added tidbit to this now-irrelevant conversation.

Brilliant band. They craft their songs, which is rare nowadays. Pity they are not as talented at choosing a name for the group. When you have the goods musically, as they do, there's no need to resort to such a juvenile and/or controversial name to get the public's attention
This band got started in my town of Vancouver BC, but Letterman's not entirely correct in calling it a "Canadian" band. Neko Case is their best singer & she's American & lives in the U.S.A. now. Of course, here we like to think of Neko as an "honourary Canadian" as she got her musical start while an Art School student for 5 years in Vancouver in country & punk bands, including all-female "Maow", & then w. TNP.Sadly, the Canadian gov't kicked her out as a resident when her student visa expired!
Gosh, I really WISH that I could like this kinda stuff, but it is so dull and nowhere that...I dunno, it seems like a lotta college kids got together and had a party and drank some beers and got all excited about making a "statement" about god knows what, and...where's the inspiration, creativity, imagination? They sound like they're the entertainers at a telethon or something. Saw them live a couple years ago and felt absolutely nothing afterwards: THIS is the sound of indie rock? Help!
That drummer is scary good. He drives the whole song.
Kurt Dahle left the New Pornographers after. “Brill Bruisers” for some 15 years he lent the New Pornographers a distinct sound. He has a unique immediately identifiable style/sound. He was replaced by current NP drummer Joe Seiders.
That fill at 3:27 is so badass.
Bass player really.
You said it. Your ears prick up from 0:59s to 1:10s. From there, it just gets better and better. I love how the elevated stage is swinging back and forth during this time though. Lots of excitement during this performance.
What a great song and what a strong performance. I think I will listen to it again.
Imposible parar de escuchar esta canción, siemptre me lleva a un lugar de felicidad!
the drums sound really awesome
Along with the Shins, my favorite band(s) of the new Millennium!
Fantastic performance and nice to see they're just as great live as on vinyl!
This is brilliant! Best modern band today.
Brilliant song 😊
The look on Kathryn Calder's face at 3:10 will melt your our collective hearts. They are really enjoying themselves.
I've seen Neko live three times, but I LOVE Kathryn Calder.
Kathryn is yummy.
Yeah saw them in person a few months ago and fell in love with Kathryn. She came out and set up her own station before the concert. And she does this weird dance with her arm behind her back.
I thought I was the only one that caught that. The way she smiles and looks up. She's like the rising sun - such a beam of joy.
I totally agree. Every time I see this, that quick smile is just electrifying.
how can you not love this band
How is it possible to write such a perfect song?
Great performance. The in studio sound must have been incredible (Letterman's crew and Paul S made sure the sound was optimum). I am convinced Carl Newman is as good an arranger as there is--(Brian Wilson and Stanley and Wiggs from St Etienne, Nile Rodgers et al). the sound is amazing on Sony monitor headphones.
Agreed. I saw them on this tour and Newman brought along the cellist. Most other bands would have skimped, but not these guys.
@@doubtfulecstasy4220 Those “extras” were friends (and I believe a band) of The NP’s. Some or all played with Carl Newman’s solo efforts.
I didn’t calm them extras. That is demeaning
@@doubtfulecstasy4220 chill. Your use of “skimped” is odd and possibly demeaning.

@thebatdad71 Kurt Dahle is phenomenal. He plays with restraint but absolutely batters his kit when it's right to do so.
Kurt Dahle is an outstanding drummer......
Such a staggering performance.
That break at 1:47 is so good, sends chills.
Great sound on this clip
So fucking good.
Saw them last Monday June 28 in St. Louis. Excellent!
You're so fabled so fair, just sit anywhere. God what a line.
Sometime's Carl's lyrics blow my mind, even if they don't necessarily make sense. Mass Romantic? Just brilliant. You can get away with anything with a tune like that.
Awesome. And well done the clappers!
billytheseagull - Love the way Dave ended it too."Yoooeeaawww!"
This particular video has been viewed 150,531 times as of right now and I'm responsible for about 1,000 of them... i love this band.
AGH! lol I adore this band- especially this whole album : ) and the album challengers. lol excellent! : )
ahaha oh my god I love the hand clap brigade so much.
I love this band...heard it on the kindle commercial....thought they were saying we talk we talk...lol.....love it so much!!! so good to see they were on letterman...hope they get more shows etc
So glad I got home in time last night to catch this on Dave. Thanks for posting!
Amazing!
as good as it gets
I guess I've watched this 100 times.
An embarrassment of riches. God I love Kathryn Calder in this video. I'm looking forward to seeing their tour this fall!
See you there!
I hear a lot of ABBA in this one. The harmonies, of course, but also the melody. Fantastic energy.
I saw Neko Case with the Sadies about 20 years ago. She was beautiful, talented AND funny. "Boy it's hot here in Pittsburgh," she told the audience. "It's so hot that my eggs have fused together!"
Well I was hot and then cold on them. But, truly, I cannot get this song out of my head. It just keeps cropping up, so back I am.
@thebatdad71 Amen to that! From Age of Electric to Limblifter to The New Pornographers, Kurt Dahle is a god of drumming!
man i wish they'd come to London.. that would be aweosme :D
Apart from the quality of the song, Kathryn looks absolutely stunning in this.
More so than usual, anyway.
@thebatdad71 Couldn't agree with you more. Saw TNP last year on tour and could not stop watching him. Great drummer and fun to watch as well (amazing facial gestures)
Brilliant
unreal band
This is so damn good.
Neko Case brings flavor to all her songs, no matter how minimal her contribution.
This is when human beings are at their best
Please come to Croatia...

Wow !
Kurt is always flailing around with his tongue out. Classic.
I love how Canada has such a low population, and yet their bands all have like 60 members =b
+Hugh Leung :D But seriously, they have very creative music scene...
+Hugh Leung We all take turns. I'm playing drums next week.
+Hugh Leung To be fair, the four clapping in the back are part of another band and were touring with TNP at the time of this recording. They're not from the bands "The Dutchess and the Duke" or "The Dodos" who were also touring with TNP in the same year, though.
Terrific observation, so true
I know, right? Arcade Fire (some Yanks in there, I know) and Broken Social Scene...
together they're amazing, Each of the 3 fronts is amazing.
they need to turn the drummer loose sometime and just let him go!
Wow, this was a pretty subdued song on the album, but they really put some force behind it here!
how can i get a gig as one of the clappers? it's a good thing they have 4 back there, cause 3 would just make it feel like it was lacking something. the new album is fantastic by the way.
Is that Barriet Star on horns?
This song set the hook in me for TNP with NC that I couldn't shite it out.
This. Is. REAL. MUSIC!
Seriously tight stuff dl's the best for keeping indies relevant would relish a fest with NP and the decemberists!
Neko!
jajajajaj es verdad, tienen los mejores "aplausadores" que he visto en mi vida, que capos carajo.
@thebatdad71 You did recognize The Dutchess and The Duke, They're in the group of four people clapping along in the back. They're the two on the left.
Take That!, Arcade Fire ;).
@101Volts Carl Newman claimed, via Twitter, it's a NY band called Bird of Youth, as well a friend simply known as Skippy. Gotta take his word for it. He would know. But you're right. That one guy looks so much like the dud fro D & D.

@thomasmoredamian I have a few things to say but first I'd like to know what you're into. What are some of your favorite bands?
I like Chicken Feed and the chessnuts. You heard them?
Saw TNP when they toured with the Bumps
What drumming. 1:00 was a sonic eye-opener.
@thomasmoredamian...We all have our blind spots. I don't think there's anything wrong with your opinion. My wife LOVES Neko, but is lukewarm on TNP. Me, I don't get The White Stripes. I miss Dave!
@101Volts On second thought maybe its not. The guy on the far left looks like hes from The Dutchess and The Duke though.
@thebatdad71 Kurt Dahle is Ringo x Keith Moon. He is great.
What's the band (The people who were clapping in the background) Again? I thought they were from New York City.
@jw1293 My bad. I thought for sure I recognized the one fellow as being from D & D. AC Tweeted earlier exactly what Monolithishy said. Apologies for my part in misidentifying those folks here.
I just read the lyrics to this song... MAN haha I was WAY off.
THIS is the sound of You Tube criticism? Help!
By the way, I never thought to ask before but who is the guy playing the Telecaster guitar? Hes standing next to Todd.
I agree Nurom666
@jw1293 I saw them in Atlanta June 26 and NP said that the next night's show in Nashville would be sad it because would be their last show with D&D. Just an added tidbit to this now-irrelevant conversation.
@creccy your right. Even still, females are pleasing to the eye lol.

That cello really cuts through the mix.

naw. the chick from the duchess and the duke had a distinct tattoo on one of her arms. and i'm certain none of those dudes are from the dodos.

I think Dave really likes NP.
TNP at peak ABBA.
Wow! Canadians CAN do things other than play bitchin' hockey and do them well! I suddenly forgive you guys for Loverboy, Brian Adams, and Celine Dion!
Maybe the band's name suggests that they will have such success and popularity but still underground like pornography
I really don’t like anything they did before last years continue as a guest but it’s an almost perfect album imo of course
kurt dahle a superhero ? what limited exposure to music you must have to find his drumming impressive.
Gosh, I really WISH that I could like this kinda stuff, but it is so dull and nowhere that...I dunno, it seems like a lotta college kids got together and had a party and drank some beers and got all excited about making a "statement" about god knows what, and...where's the inspiration, creativity, imagination?
