Sir Malcom Rifkind, former foreign secretary under John Major reacts to Kemi Badenoch's criticisms of Rishi Sunak in their first shadow cabinet meeting.

We’ve had Thatcherism since 1979 which serves the interests of the wealthy. The problem with Thatcherism is that you eventually run out of assets like Thames Water to sell to investors so that they can rip off British consumers. 1. Reduce inequality by taxing the asset wealth of the rich. 2. Stop selling British assets and British companies to foreign control.
And they ran out of oil pretty quickly . Those revenues could have been used for so much better .
No we haven't. We ve had Blairism since 97. Cameron worshipped Blair and kicked out the actual conservatives MPs long ago, moving the party to left. Since then it's been giant tax and spend, woke gender nonsense and open borders. Running out of other peoples a money? That's Labours entire philosophy.

So tax the wealthy and prevent foreign direct investment, eh? Well, that's one way of turning this country into a basket case.
Thatcherism (1979-1990) and Blairism (1997-present) are completely different ideologies.

2 - She backed disgraceful showtrail of Boris
3 - Voted against to block Brexit Truss 4 PM
4 - Backed Decision to rob members of their right to pick next Boss after Truss
5 - Kemi selected Sunak as PM without election.
6 - Kemi was castigated by Brexit Bull Dog Sir Bill Cash in commons for betraying Brexit

@@Dude-etiquette I find it very difficult to believe how The Tories ended up this way. As a lad from a privatised council estate I thought it was a party for those who wanted to elevate themselves in life. I was even a member myself once and it devastates me to see what they've become. The damage they've inflicted in the last few years mainly lockdown was the worst they did.
This is why the Tories don’t deserve to be in opposition. Too much clown drama.

Also we've used the oil. Scotland think there's loads left tas well, but it was always Shetland and Hebridean oil.

I think they should appoint a Savoy cabbage as next Tory leader. Shadow cabinet can be made up of kohl rabi, turnips and whatever vegetable comes to mind to reflect their 14 years in power.

The election wasn't lost because of personalities, or tactical errors made by Sunak.
The 14 years of incompetence, scandal and cruel policies made them an unelectable shower.
All these ex Ministers crawling out from behind the sofa should square up and apologise their role in the demise of their own time in power.
Exactly. The moment Labour pulled themselves together and started to look like they could run a serious government, it was pretty much over for the Tories. Odds are they would’ve lost this election regardless of what happened, though probably not as badly as they have. By limping around for so long under Johnson, then allowing Truss to wreck the house before Sunak came in and stumbling through the last 18 months while his party ate each other alive was just the icing on the cake.
It’s ironic to me that Kemi and Suella are happy to blame Rishi when they made his life far harder than they needed to, and essentially tarnished the reputation of this party far more than he did.
Kemi brutally honests....seriously, she is deluded...she spent her time cherry picking economic data and talking up her trade deals that are not worth the paper they are written on.

And her so called trade deals aren't even trade deals. It's just an understanding between the UK and some US states to look at certain things favourably. Of course single states in the US cannot agree to a trade deal, only the US as a whole.

Malcolm Rifkind the guy who in that sting a while ago said he didn't have a job and his rate for a mornings work was 13k, whilst he was an mp and head of a committee. Why does he still have a voice he's a self serving nobody.
The Conservatives are currently in the dock at the court of public opinion, and a good lawyer would probably advise them just to keep quiet at the moment.
If Kemi Badenoch is one of the "hot favourites" for leadership that shows the Tories are still utterly clueless about where they went wrong (Cameron "modernisation", not Sunak, he's just an end product not the cause of their problems).
Badenoch doesn't represent Cameronism/Blairism. She's frequently talks about now, oddly enough, as being the time to break free of blairism.

@@phYT01 no I think she'd have a logical place in the right of the current party no matter what. She has an acute sense of historical narrative and the need for institutional recapture -- and is the only Tory to explicitly recognise the Tories as currently "Blairite" and that this ought to change.

We saw the same thing with Truss vs Sunak. The Tory party membership will ALWAYS choose to most deluded and inappropriate option who tells them everything they want to hear. If that membership retains final say of the new Leader - the Tory party will never regain Power.

Malcolm Rifkind compares Truss,Johnson and Corbyn and says they are similar,Corbyn has been an excellent member of parliament so much so he was re-elected as an independent,the other two failed their constituents and lied,one resigned rather than fight again ,the other lost a huge majority

This was lost the day voted for Brexit. It wasn't wanted by most Con MPs. A BBC survey showed that 80% of MPs didn't want Brexit, put viewed a vote as democratic. It was an argument based on lies with more definitions of Brexit, than the LGBTQ community have pronouns.

Hardline austerity from 2010 onwards disenfranchised so many people, a great deal of whom found solace in the culture wars and brexit which the tories themselves encouraged.
The tory obsession with winning elections has led to a fractured society and ultimately fractured the tory party itself.

Kemi Badenoch has every right to say how she feels. If people don't like it, then that is hard luck. In life there is too much fannying around and not speaking ones mind just harbours resentment.
To be fair Kemi said “bordering on unconstitutional”. What she means is, in this day and age, it is beyond ridiculous for a Prime Minister, especially an unelected one, to call a General Election 7 months before you need to, one you are almost certain to lose badly, without consulting the Cabinet.

Sunak called the election as requested by Netanyahu so the news cycle took the focus off Israel and Gaza. Why did he go ahead with this request ???? Because he wants a job with a Jewish hedge fund in New York.
It's not unconstitutional at all to do what Rishi Sunak did, in bringing forward the general election. Neither is it "bordering on unconstitutional" or anywhere near it. To say so is a straight out lie.

The people in the meeting know the point she is making because 99% of them were as outraged as she is by Sunak calling an early election, he was almost certainly going to lose, without consulting them first.
Nick Clegg got a law brought in to stop the prime minister calling an election with a vote in Parliament, but the Remainers abused that law to stop Boris Johnson from calling a general election when he had no majority, because Remainers were afraid of the electorate and wanted to re-run the referendum.
Doing exactly what they’ve done for the last 14 years- slagging each other off and blaming rather than just rolling their sleeves up and concentrating on moving forward. They brought defeat upon themselves. Waiting to the Autumn for the GE would just have prolonged the agony.

It's not complicated. Badenoch, Sunak, Braverman and Patel have spent the last few years trying to appeal to the racist white Tory voter who resents having non-white neighbours, whilst simultaneously expecting them not to harbour the same feelings toward having a non-white government.
It could absolutely get worse, you could fall to the third or fourth party . Please don't underestimate just how angry the public are with the previous government.

Being a leader of the opposition is the not most appetizing job, especially if the Tories might be in opposition for two terms.
The Conservatives face mission impossible. They need to figure out exactly where they stand politically, then present an (outwardly) united party, where discipline is strictly enforced. It's not going to happen, the party might as well split now.
