Hi Gary. I am looking for replacement (thicker) o-rings for my older R-CAN (Viqua) system with aluminum threaded top and bottom sleeve retainer nuts. Everyone I talk to says that the thick o-rings are obsolete and they can only get the thinner ones. I was also told that the thinner o-rings are suitable for all systems. What do you think?
Thank you Gary for the terrific video. As a first time home owner with lake water and filtration you really made this process fast and confident for me. Cheers!
Thank you ! Saved me a whole lot of time and headache. So easy. One thing I didn't know. Couldn't get off the big housing . I pushed the release button for the pressure but it didn't budge. Pressed it again and finally held it down which worked. Filter was dark brown. I think I need to change mine twice a year!
Hey Kelly,I use a 3 foot poly hollow pipe and attached with tape and screws the original filter wrench for great leverage to get the blue filter housing off,?it works every time.
count me in too. :) And though I'm pretty sure we're all intelligent enough, we all seem to forget to write the instructions down on a piece of tape and stick it near the unit lol.
Another year another time watching this. Thanks so much. I have a horizontal installation for the lamp so water doesn’t fully drain from the tube. We remove as much as we can but does the bulb get damaged if there is some water inside the sleeve?
Yes, it is always difficult to replace the sleeve and not get any water inside of it. There can be a wee bit but ideally the bulb should not sit in water. I have often blew out the sleeve with compressed air before inserting the lamp to remove 99% of the water.
Well done. Thanks. You may want to consider expanding the video, showing cleaning the glass tube with white vinegar, then advising people to then clean off that vinegar in a gallon bucket of clean water (put the clean water in that bucket before turning off the water), before replacing into the SteriLight. You may also want to emphasize the difference between silicone GREASE and ordinary silicone. Once again: excellent information.
Thank you Gary. Mine is installed vertically however. The ballast is at the bottom. I.e. Upside down? This was the way it was installed from the contractor as it is a new home in Hawaii. So follow the video opposite? Again. Thank you so much for having this video out here.
I think I see why they installed it upside down Gary. After reading some of the manuals. It says to install with inlet at the bottom. Our incoming water from the outside and filters comes into or in the water closet from the top. So, nearest I can figure. Instead of re piping it. They put it upside down so as the incoming water now comes into the bottom of the unit. Yet with it upside down it is the top. If that makes sense. I wanted to just unhook the water lines as there are unions at each connection. And relocate the ballast and turn it around. But that would have the incoming water coming into the top of the unit where the lamp connection would be. Right now? There is a pipe below and I would be lucky to get the lamp out from the bottom as it is anyhow. Thank you so much for the imputs on this. This plumber didnt do such a good job. It is btw. The S12Q-PA. Did they eleminate the drain when they went to the plastic caps? The lady at the store where I went to get the lamp said there would be a drain but in the manual it says the aluminum caps. And I see no drain on ours as we have the newer version with plastic caps Thank you again Gary for you expertise Don
Hi Gary - Great video, but I do have one concern. At the end of the video, you are suggesting to plug in and reset the lamp timer *before* turning the water back on. That's a big booboo, that bulb will heat up quickly and when the cold water hits it, it could break. You should turn on all the water valves, checking for leaks, and clearing any air from the system before plugging in and reseting the lamp.
@@water_estore Respectfully, I will point out that the installation guide from Viqua differs: "When all plumbing connections are complete, slowly turn on the water supply and check for leaks. The most likely cause of leaks is from the O-ring seal. In case of a leak, shut water off, drain cell, remove the retaining nut, wipe the O-ring and threads. Clean and re-install.7.Once it is determined that there are no leaks, plug the system into the ground fault interrupter and check controller to ensure the system is operating properly. The controller should illuminate without any alarms. Note: DO NOT look directly at the glowing UV lamp. 8.Allow the water to run for a few minutes to clear any air or dust that may be in the UV chamber.Note: When there is no flow, the water in the cell will become warm, as the UV lamp is always on. To remedy this, run a cold water tap anywhere in the house for a minute to flush out the warm water." But to your point, the installation guide also says to never allow untreated water into your system until the bulb has run for at least 5 minutes. Seems there is no perfect answer, you would almost need some kind of bypass after the filter, but before entering the home plumbing to drain water after a filter change. Nobody is ever going to bother with that.
Are the less expensive Chinese bulbs as good as the o.e visual sterilight. And can it function good without cleaning the glass tube which I have not cleaned in 10 years?
Nope, the Chinese lamps I've used never actually lasted more than 6 months, don't waste your money. If the glass tube is dirty the UV light will not shine through and you are wasting your money on UV lamps as nothing is working.
@The Water eStore I need your help. My quartz sleeve cracked on the top and bottom while I was cleaning the system. I assume that is the reason water is now pouring out the top of the system when I turn the water back on?
I have an older Sterilight S24Q 2 bulb system that was installed by the former owner. I have replaced the bulbs and sleeves. The system will not stop beeping and there is no reset button on the controller probably becuase it is 20 years old. I assume I should replace the controller but the part BA-3612 does not exist anymore. Is there a different controller that will work for this system. Thank you
Usually if the gland nut isn't tight enough. You could also try adding silicone lubricant to the o ring.waterestore.ca/products/plumbers-clear-silicone-grease-5g
Great video, just bought a house with this exact model installed. the problem I have is that the systme is installed too close to the basement ceiling. Can I slide the replacement bulb in from the bottom? I don't see any other way to do it as the top connector is 10" from my ceiling.
Jeff Gray hi Jeff, I have the same scenario at my house and cannot see the response to your question. Are you able to replace the bulb from the bottom? Thanks
Your display has the water inlet and outlet on the sides of the unit.mine is plumbed with the inlet on the bottom directly into the unit.does that mean the sleeve must come out only from the top????
@@water_estore Thanks Gary. One observation if I may: at 8:31, you mention that we must hold the button until it shows reset AND goes to 365. In my case, I kept holding it for like 10 seconds and it showed reset all that time but did not show 365. I decided to release the button. Only AFTER releasing the button did the 365 show up - instantly. An anomaly?
What do I do if my quartz sleeve is stuck? I'm at the 5:02 mark with both nuts, bottom spring, and both O-rings removed and if I let go of the quartz sleeve at the top, it goes nowhere. I don't need to hold it at all and I don't want to pull too hard on it in case I break it. I'm dealing with a Sterilight S12Q-PA that's connected to an acid neutralizer, if that's relevant at all. I did have a bit of sediment in the bucket when the water drained, so could that be part of the issue?
We have Viqua filter housing wrenches but we first need to know which model Viqua filter housing that you have. Check our website here waterestore.ca/search?type=product&q=viqua*%20filter*%20housings* and let me know at info@waterestore.coms
Does the controller has some kind of fuse? The UV part is not heating (no even with a new UV light). Controller shows 365 which should mean it's operating.
What does a flashing red light mean on the middle light of the timer after the sleeve and bulb has been replaced and the timer is plugged back in? And how does the timer reset to 365 days?
Not a bad demo except the bottom ring is crucial and he just barely touches on it. Second the older style pull push clip is a pain to line up on post-bulb change closure. Pay attention to where it is on disassembly. Lastly not sure it’s a good idea to have power on to lit bulb without water against the sleeve to cool unit.
Thanks for adding your comments. If you don’t power it up before adding the water you run the risk of passing not treated water down stream and infecting your treated water.
@@water_estore Or just fill up the sediment prefilter housing with bleach before screwing it back on, run this into the system, hold for a bit and wash it out by running everything connected (careful not to run washing machine with clothes until system is purged).
Thanks for the great video, Gary ! I have a question - my unit is upside-down, so after removing the lamp and the sleeve that by the way cracked, as I was inserting a new quartz sleeve into it's place, the remaining water was all over the sleeve. I am not sure if it entered the sleeve, so whether or not the water got onto the light. The sleeve was all wet from the outside and water was dripping around the opening. I am afraid whether or not my UV filter is working or not? I would appreciate your thoughts on it.
Thank you, Gary, for your reply. It seems I've managed to do it right this first time. Lots to learn about living in the country. :) I do enjoy your videos and advise.
