  • One of our favorite aircraft at the museum is the workhorse, the C-141 Starlifter. In this video from 2012, Lt Col Jack Warneke, USAF Retired, describes his experiences as a pilot of the C-141 aircraft.

The commentary was very interesting and informative. I also flew C-141 at Norton, from 1975-1979. A model only. Just a minor correction, when you stated you could pump up an accumulator to start an engine, well yes, but it was a hydraulic pump, not compressed air, and yes it was 450 pumps on a hand pump & it would take the whole crew to get the job done. I have done it, that’s how I remember this! BUT that would only allow you to spin the APU up & not a main engine. Then with APU you can start the main engines, with bleed air. You would only need a ground air cart if the APU was inop. I hope I am remembering this correctly.

My dad flew one of the 1st 3 C-141's into McChord in '65 along with the pilot that took off with the spoilers deployed. The plane went right into the water at night time and the wings detached from the plane. My dad told me the pilot was a great swimmer and thought he'd get out but he died on impact.
I saw the 1st C-141 written off after it caught fire on the tarmac at McChord, very sad it was a brand new airplane.
My dad also flew the C-124 out of Travis and McChord then the 141 out of McChord and Dover. Along with the AC-119 in VN and the WB-50 out of Guam and Japan.
    Great video! Thanks!!

I was a jet engine mechanic at Norton AFB and worked the flight line on the C141 A&B. Engine run qualified. While running one of the engines I had an internal fire. Saved the plane by extinguishing the fire.
Had fond memories of my time doing job.
Can tell you many stories about how we maintained the aircraft.
My reguards to fellow mechanics. (1975-1979)

i worked in fuel systems at Travis AFb from 1966 to the end of 68 . almost all of our work was replacing leaking fasteners in the fuel tanks . occasionally we replaced bladders on C 130s and 135s and a bit,of work on B 52s .
the 141s were the easiest to work on especially the inboard tanks . however crawling out into the outboard tanks was very difficult . i had to work lying down and working by feel over my head .most guys wouldn't go into the outboard tanks because of claustrophobia ,so they sent me . 😂

I was a Jet Engine Tech. at Dover and McGuire AFB working on the C141. The TF33 was a strong and reliable engine. I like how the display aircraft had an engine with an open T/R.

Blast from my past! :) I spent 8 years turning wrenches on C-141's out of McGuire AFB, and was deployed to SE Asia in Desert Shield / Storm working them. It was one tough airplane and the AF definitely got its money's worth from this airframe. It's a classic that will always hold a special place in my heart.

I was stationed at McChord 1968-1970 in an aircraft recovery unit. The original had no in-flight refueling. Replaced many pitch trim activators located in the T tail. 62 MAW

I live in Frankfurt am Main Germany. When I was a small kid I remember watching the or actually hearing them flying over my head here. Also the C 5 Galaxy. Man those aircraft made noise. Was a great time when there was the Rhein Main airbase here.

Tell me about it ! We loved it while it lasted and I have many memories and mementos! I went there over the years as both a child and later as a C-5 instructor flight engineer out of Travis AFB California.

I brought some People back from Vietnam, and we just had the side Troop seats down. WE passed box lunches back down the line of seats, and then we had to stop.
The people would take what they wanted out of each box and then pass what ever was left back down the line. I had to explain that each person was supposed to get one entire box of food. The final destination for a lot of people I brought back was Arkansas.
Some Loadmasters told me that a few times they tried to start fires on the floor to heat up stuff. I am not sure if this was true, I did not see that. I did see a lot of American contractors that were coming back with their families. Furthermore, I had to stop one woman from beating her husband with high heel shoes. That was different and a little funny to me.
I flew out of Charleston, South Carolina. WE flew worldwide. One time we flew all the way around the world as some kind of publicity thing with reporters on board. Even had a Playboy Bunny one time.
I went to advanced Loadmaster school at Altus, OK

I flew to Da Nang South Vietnam from Ft Carson Colorado on July 28, 1968. We flew from Colorado Springs Airport. We made several stops during this flight. The cargo area was equipped with the seats and the seats were facing backwards. We Landen at Clark air base then flew to Da Nang south Vietnam and we went to Quang Tri by C123 and C130 Air Craft. We were the Fifth division and I think this was the last unit that went to south Vietnam as a complete unit. We were stationed at Con Thein then Cam Lo and Quang Tri.
