Are Tardigrades Aliens? | The Dodo

  • Did this animal actually come from outer space?? Tardigrades are the weirdest, most extreme creatures on the planet. They can survive in volcanoes, Arctic ice, and even the vacuum of space. And if that's not enough, they just might be proof of alien life.

    I would just like to point out (As a Biologist/Astrobiologist) that Tardigrades do not come from space. They originate from the oceans. During Hurricane season, massive storms and hurricanes pick these critters up from their ocean habitat and launch them into the atmosphere where they can remain for months or even years at a time. It's here where there are sub zero temperatures (averaging about minus 130 degrees F), radiation, and very little oxygen. For those critters who have survived these harsh conditions, they end up passing along those genes to the population when they are reintroduced back into the ocean. And then the cycle begins again.
    While their ability to survive in space is remarkable, up to 10 days in the vacuum of space, about 68% survive the journey, which is highly suggestive that the original population of tardigrade ancestors were from the ocean and could not survive these conditions. So the 32% that did not survive represent genes from an older generation, while the 68% that do survive must come from relatively younger (newer) generations that have these adaptations to survive extreme environments. If 100% of the tardigrade population survived the journey, that would mean previous ancestor generations also had this ability, and thus that would be highly suggestive that the original population came from space. Hope that makes sense to everyone!

    • @testicularoxide5055
      @testicularoxide5055 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But still no information to suggest they were formed/created here on terra prime...

    • @darrjo23
      @darrjo23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not saying they are from space but your theory as to why not, doesn't really work. It could be that the 32% are a newer modification and have lost the ability to survive in space.

    • @photios4779
      @photios4779 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the insight. I don't think they are aliens either. If they were, their genome would show no evolutionary relationship to other Earth life and would be very different compared to anything else on our planet. This would have been immediately noticeable when the tardigrade genome was sequenced a few years ago. The researchers who did so made no claims about them hosting extraterrestrial genes, though interestingly there was some discussion about the tardigrade having an unusually large number of genes from other Earth species introduced into it via horizontal gene transfer. Of course, one could still argue that that the common (microbial) ancestor of tardigrades and ALL earthly life was deposited on this planet some four billion or so years ago from a passing comet (panspermia). So perhaps we are all the descendants of aliens?

      i believe it more likely than science is willing to admit. However now that 2020 has been in full swing for while; I'd say the the little critter that can survive a comet ride from one planet to the next or say like this one, can survive a nasty take off and a wicked landing. its very possible they are the seeds of another planet or moons life.

      They aren’t from space because space doesn’t have algae and therefore they wouldn’t be able to do anything because it of lack of energy. They could be from a different planet but I doubt it because the planet would need to be big enough to have water and an atmosphere, but since the planet has those things how would they exceed the escape velocity? Besides the only thing we see them do is eat algae not build tiny spaceships powerful enough to escape the gravitational pull of planets.

      Its 2019 stop using you frecking metric units. Update yourself ffs.
      Seriusly this comment accomplish nothing other than making you look like a extremely petty person. Who cant bother to either understand imperial units, or is unwilling to use a fucking converter.
      In all honesty though I was taught to use Kelvin for scientific measurements. So people who use metric are sitting in the same boat as those who use imperial from where I'm sitting.

      Yeah, that would be everyone on this planet (except for USA, Liberia and Myanmar) that do not use them.
