I have watched a lot of TH-cam review videos for all kinds of stuff. Hands down this one of best videos I have ever watched. To the point, covered many points, and solid tests.
I just bought the Wen 2250 watt generator, model #56225i and I'm running it through it's paces right now. It's not my primary generator, so high output was not a factor. I wanted something that could power my fridge/ freezer more quietly and suck less fuel than my 5500 watt primary generator. So far, I'm impressed with the Wen #56225i. I've used it to power a 1500 watt space heater, electric fryer and a panini press. It will be perfect for camping or as light duty backup to my main generator. 1st hour oil change is complete, running it for 2 hours before dumping the oil again. I will switch to synthetic after 3 hours of total run time.
Couple of cool guys that I wouldn't mind hanging out with. Great video guys. I have two of the Honda EU2000i generators (first gen, have had them since they first hit the market) that power my house during power outages & they have ran perfectly all of these years. I have seen the Predator generator locally & it handled the loads placed on it fine, my father has the larger none inverted WEN generator & it hasn't given him any issues in the past three to four years he has owned it.
You will love this very amazing video th-cam.com/video/52ruOqlsf0Q/w-d-xo.html please watch it. You’ll really love it. Please subscribe to this TH-cam video and please leave a comment. Thank you
Camera's have all kinds of automatic things that can do a lot of funny things, you need a decibel meter to tell for sure. There's at least a 90% chance that both units are made in the same factory in China, with only minor differences in features and cosmetics so they all don't look alike. Look at the screwdrivers that came with both units, both are identical and the same unusual yellow color, same factory.
I have the older model WEN been using it for three years now to run a window AC unit in my semi..i can't say enough good things about it..it haven't skipped a beat yet..i run it continuously tru the night to keep from idling my rig..after three years I'm still using the original spark plug..it far exceeds factory running hours using 450 watts...depending on how i set the thermostat I've at best got a continuous 16 hours under good weather conditions..i would definitely recommend it..
2100 hours on mine...original spark plug also... Not a hint of issues! 12 hours runtime with my load on a 1.18 gallon (full tank). Its hook to my 39 ft 5th wheel!
Nice review. One thing that always gets me is, Why does everyone always open these packages the same way ? Instead of cutting the top of the box....Tip it sideways and cut the bottom and spread the flaps out.... Put the box Upright ..... Then just lift the Box off of the Product....Easy as Pie !
Great video gentlemen. To avoid bogging down when starting heavy loads, do not start heavy loads on econo mode. Switch to econo mone once the load had started. Thanks again for good video.
You guys went a long way towards my being able to pass by any buyers remorse. (I know..."a day late and a dollar short"...but) you have helped confirm that I may have gone the best route by choosing the Predator 2K in the first place as a matter of shear happenstance and a bit o' luck!! Thanks! I'm lucky sometimes. I'm Irish. And you guys are TOPS!
Thank ya Foxisms! Jack sure liked his Predator and would feel you made a good choice! Wouldn't mind having you around... could use a bit a that Irish luck!! :) Take care!
Nice video! I just got the HF. I believe in heat cycling to break in a new engine. I'm using a 1500W hair dryer to increase the cyl. pressure to seat the rings. First few runs of 10? minutes with no load and full cool down. After that I use the hair dryer to sneak up on the loading in small bursts increasing the duration each time. Back in the day my buddy glazed the cylinder walls on his new Honda 350 because he babied it too much on the break in.
Own two of the 56200i WEN's and love em. Great generator for the money. My first one is at close to 100hrs with no issues. Just picked up the second one and it's at 12hrs. WEN has a better warranty (2yrs) than the Predator (90 days). Both are pretty much the same, but you have to pay more money to get a real warranty on the Predator. Once you add the extra warranty the WEN is cheaper. Realistically if your good within 90 days (test it) you will probably not need the warranty. Predator did sound less noisy and didn't bog down as much on the AC. Advice: Run some Brad Penn SAE 10w30 oil (high zinc) which is necessary for air cooled engines. Also change oil a couple times within the first 10hrs. You will see metal shavings in the oil from break in. Sooner you get it out the better. Magnetic oil dispstick works good and I also added a RPM/HR gauge (great mods).
Hey FTLAUD 911! Thanks for the comment! Actually, I am pretty happy with the WEN and think I made the right choice... I need to take a look at that exhaust and see if it is bent. If so... off it goes to get another one! Thanks for the tip on the oil, good advice. I did get the magnetic oil stick, so hopefully that will pick up the shavings once broke in! Thanks again!
FTLAUD 911 just use a 20 percent off coupon that is always available online, and buy the two year warranty, and it puts them about identical. And one thing is in my opinion it is much easier returning to harbor freight then home Depot. Harbor freight has never gave me a bit of hesitation, home Depot has. But two great generators
I used to sell Honda generators. Nice units, but terribly pricey. The units you show here are good units for the money. Nice job on the demo, guys. Thanks for sharing.

Perfect work gentlemans. Greetings from venezuela the country that ran over 100hrs last week. I have a eu2000 and went perfect trough those 5 days. A friend ran a predator 2000 and a 9000 and both also did a perfect job. Never seen a wen so i cant speak for that but under this deplorable circumstances that we went, predator and honda saved our food, our water, and our minds. If i were in the market for a 2000w generator, i would go with predator.
Thank you Yosue! Glad you made it through such a terrible time and your generators were able to see you through! From what I hear, the Wen and the Predator are made in the same factory. The Wen is manufactured for Home Depot and the Predator is manufactured for Harbor Freight. I would have to say then... if the Predator was able to help get you through the tough time, the Wen should be just as reliable! Thank you for stopping by!
@@OregonBatman after going trough what i mentioned before, the predator started to surge. i had to set it almost on choke to avoid the surging. i took out the carb, cleaned deeply, inspected the jet, etc and the surging was still there. i contacted HF and they said that i had to wait 16 WEEKS for a carb replace. i said what? are you kidding me? are you gonna make from zero? They said they dont have parts in any store, they have to mae a special order to china and that is why it takes so long. For that bad experience, we ended up almost gifting the predator and we are selling the 9000 before give us a "surprise" and prevented my friends from buying 6 predators, and went with 6 briggs & stratton. i will never ever get anything from HF. By the time we are only getting 4 hours of electricity daily, im actually writing this thanks to my generator
@@yosuecaridad944 Jack's Predator did the same thing... brought it out of the garage and fired it up and it sat there and surged. When he plugged in a load and turned the power on... the surge went away. Ran it for a little while and everything was fine again. We fired them up a few weeks ago and all is back to normal. Try starting, let it warm up (even if it surges), then put a load on it and let it run. See if that helps.
Hi, Yosue. I’m a gringo, but my wife is Venezuelan and I have a ton of family still there. I’ve been there two dozens, did marketing work for Santa Teresa rum, and had a condo in Macuto that was destroyed by the mudslides. Good luck with everything and God bless.
Current prices Predator $619.99, standard warranty and no tax added. Wen $339.99, added 4 year warranty $52.99, free shipping and no tax added. Wen wins hands down. Over a $225.00 difference. Nice video guys.
Not even interested in a generator, these guys are just a good watch, takes you back to a early more wholesome TH-cam, (yes I know It's 4 years old, still)
Just a Note For those Who Purchased Either , The predator uses the same inverter board as the wen, I E : the WEN Predator and Ryobi 2kw models are produced in the same factory. so when your predator Inevitably kicks the inverter bucket You can replace the predator board ( 320.00) with a oem Wen Board for 150.00
I did the same test you did with the 5050 btu window digital air conditioner it worked. But the thing I should have done is run ac on a little bit of an extension cord to duplicate it in a RV. The longer the cord the more the load and harder to start. I noticed the Predator had some pretty thick foam on the side panel. That's thicker foam than my 2200 watt Sportsman dual fuel suitcase style generator like yours. My dual fuel little generator runs on propane or gasoline. Propane is one of the cleanest burning fuels out there. the spark plug and carburetor never gets clogged up on propane. But one problem they use the snorkel propane conversion kit on my generator. I have to pull start it 16 through 20 times to get it started. So I come up with a plan I fill the fuel tank up with propane for about seven or eight seconds. With the fuel tank valve on, choke on and economy mode off one or two pulls it starts and it's on. Basically my generator is not pulling the propane into the engine when you pull on the cord like it should. I don't know if this is just my generator or all of them having a problem but they need to fix that before they go out of business. I've not used it on gasoline at all. In my Sportsman dual fuel 2200 watt generator its only a 79cc engine. I think they run the RPM higher to get 15 amps out of it. But that is what they told me at the factory 15 amps so it may not be true unless I measured it with a gauge. On this generator I can run 19 hours at half load on a full BBQ standard tank. And one advantage with a bag on the front seat of my truck. I can put my generator up in the front seat. and put a seat belt around it because I don't have any gasoline in it to spill. I've never had gasoline in it so far so I won't be smelling gasoline fumes. I have another generator I had the carburetor off while rebuilding it and I was just spraying propane into the intake of another gasoline only generator to start it. And with the gasoline valve shut off it was running on propane at an idle and when I put my hand over the intake to block airflow and still had the propane down the intake it revved all the way up. Running propane is more dependable but I'm having like i say a little problem with mine. And this is probably going to destroy Sportsman dual fuel generators because most people don't know to fill up the fuel tank with propane to get it started. You shouldn't have to do this to get it started. I paid $500 for it on the door. I missed the sale when it was on sale for $400 on the door which was a better deal.
Good video. Most early failures on those inverter generators are related to failure to change out the oil after initial burn-in. So after you run it for 30 mins to 5 hrs, and all the rough edges have had a chance to smooth down and leave deposits in the oil, be sure to drain and change it out. That magnet should help significantly too.
I know, right? I thought I could adjust or move mine.... couldn't do it. So I went ahead and run the generator thinking I might have to cut the exhaust cover for the muffler. But after running and letting everything cool... everything lined up perfectly! Weird! So my best guess is, while in shipping, things must have moved. Then after running the generator, the vibration put everything back in its place. What a relief it was to see that! Now it looks perfect!
Has either the Predator or the Wen overloaded when using the small AC? I bought a Predator 2000 to run the small 5000 btu AC for my teardrop camper and the generator overloaded twice when the AC was on high as the compressor came on. The AC I have is rated at 450 watts and 4.1 amps max, but I also used a Kill A Watt to measure it and it only actually draws 380 watts and about 3.1 amps when the compressor is running.
Hey notruss1... thanks for stopping by. Sorry to hear of your overloading issue. Neither the Wen or the Predator overloaded on the 5000 watt A/C. Actually handles it quite well. I am wondering if your Predator has a fault from the factory? It should pull your A/C without a problem. I believe it can handle a load up to around 13 amps. Any issues running other appliances such as a small heater? If it works without any issues... could be the A/C unit itself giving you problems. Only time I had the overload light blink, is when using a 1000 watt microwave, but was still able to boil water. Hoping it's just the A/C and not the generator (a/c cheaper to replace!) :)
@@OregonBatman No, I think it was the generator because the AC works fine on 120V. I suspect the quality of the Chinese parts vary a bit. Also, the startup for a 5000 btu AC can sometimes be more than 13 amps which would trip it. I returned it and HF refunded my money no questions. Now I just need to find one that wont have issues. A lot of the cheap 2000W generators wont handle the load they are advertised at. Have you ran your AC with it on high for over an hour?
Good to know you got a refund! The A/C I have has one setting... either on or off. So when I hit the switch, it's full blast. I haven't run it for an extended period of time, but compressor kicks on at initial start up. You may need a larger generator if using Predator, or may have to opt for the Honda which is twice the cost.
Someone else researched that idea and came up empty... I believe they ended up making their own, but it had to be sort of a gravity fed system. Not something I wanted to try
Really good comparison video guys 👍👍👍 I wouldn’t have purchased the predator before I watched the video! I know a lot of generators are manufactured by the same company.
I'm SURE they didn't mean to ignore you. I watched that part again on full screen and that was the overload light that flickered on the Predator. At the end, he kind of implies the Wen didn't do as well as the Predator on the AC test, but I think that clearly shows the Predator had a harder time juicing up the AC when he flicked it's power switch. I see on todays date, 03-16-21, the Wen is on sale on their website for like $374? Sounds like a bargain.
cz luver I did this , well my son did it for me, I ran it off of the little 2 stroke 1000 watts. It was everything it wanted but it worked. I had our ran into our camper with a 12 guage 25 foot drop cord. My wife wasn’t even think about it and plugged her hair dryer into it. Running the 5000 btu A/C only pulls like 450 to 550 watts. Her hair dryer pulls 1700 watts. It dogged it down some but the genny never tripped its breaker or gave up. My son also invented me a meet little cap for mine. He took off the air vent valve and job welded a spout onto the cap which he attached to my cap. He then attached a 5 gallon fuel tank with another homespun spout at the bottom. 3 feet of fuel line and a 5 gallon bucket to gravity feed the predator to. It will now run almost all weekend. He said he’s looking for a beer keg to hold 16 gallons of gas to run to both of our gennies to and buy the parallel control system to. That way when we are out at our camp spot. By the way it’s a privately owned sight we can have roughly 4000 watts. We have a concrete lined pit about 30 feet from our camp sight. When they are running you can’t hear them. Since his gas cap invention which provides about 36 hours depending on what we run there have been a few mornings we have awoke to a very hot tent. We just run up the road and buy 10 gallons of gas. I usually have to take my boat because by day 3 it’s usually needing gas also. Love this genny set up. My next one. I’m buying the next bigger unit however. My oldest son is wanting to start bringing his family along. He asked us if he could power his 5000 btu unit off our setup. I said well if it doesn’t the nearest harbor freight is 17 miles away. I got extremely lucky when I bought mine. It was an open box return. They wanted 350 for it. I asked if they could cut me a better deal. She took it up front. Said how’s 175. I told her to ring it up. It was in its first oil fill. So I took it home dumped out the oil and put in Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. Ran like a champ. 450 generator for 182 dolls out the door. I did not get my tool pouch it my 12 volt plug in though. I guess I’ll look on amazon see if they sell them on their. I have been nothing but pleased with mine. We’re talking about next year buying 3 10x10 sheds and slowly remodeling them into houses or cabins if you will. That way the cousins have some privacy if they want to bring a friend. And just fixing up the place a little better. It’s 5 acres. Right now we have an out house. Eventually we’d like to get a septic system and drill a well. That’s a few years from now though.
I am not sure... what I am finding is that you want to parallel to generator with same output. You might have to do a little research to see if this is possible, you don't want to loose one (or both) trying to find out.
@@OregonBatman Well I did the parallel video of my predator and wen 2250. It works! Check it out predator paralleled with wen 2250. Is a little shaky quality. Am new to this!
Nope.. one of these should fit the bill. Unless you are bringing along home airconditioners, curling irons, big microwaves. :) But, if you want to power small fridge, a few lights, coffee maker... this will be plenty!
There's no way to know from an automatic leveling camera. Sorry. I work in pro audio and it would be difficult even with our most expensive gear. There are a lot of factors including the base and harmonic frequencies your ears are hearing.
Does it have an hour meter? If not, that is inexcusable regardless of price. Sine or square wave power? Total harmonic distortion? Auto-throttling depending on load? Ease of draining carburetor for long-term storage? Ease of adding or changing the oil? Engine displacement? Long-term durability comparison? Accurate, dependable fuel gauge? Toolless access to the engine?
Whoa....!! You got my head spinning with all them questions! Nope, no hour meter. Supposed to be sine wave... haven't heard any bad reports otherwise. Not sure what harmonic distortion is, but it sounds purtty! Yup... in Eco mode, auto throttle for the load. Haven't tried draining carb, I generally start it once a month to make sure all is well. Not too messy adding oil if you have the correct funnel. 350CI (LOL!) Haven't had them long enough for long term comparison. From videos I've seen and reports I've read.... they can last a long time and people are happy with them. It appears fuel gauge is accurate... when it hits "E", it stops! You will need a tool to remove sides to get to engine... I think there is three or four to remove.
Nice job fellas. I am in the market for a 2000 to 3000 generator and have been checking out these 2 that you did the review on and also the Predator 3500 watt. Thanks for some insight on the 2000's.
Hi, I have the similar WEN model, the handle in the middle is a bit flimsy. The handle warped together (cheaply made plastic )when I lift the generator from the ground! I don’t know if I got a faulty unit or Wen products are cheaply made! Could you give me feedback on that please, thanks you.
Hey Andy! Guessing the unit been sitting in sun a lot? Strange how that handle deformed. You might have to make leather wrap for that! I haven't had that experience just yet, but I'll watch for it... thanks for the heads up!
OregonBatman well the plastic handle is thin that it can’t handle weight on my WEN unit( it bending together when lifting of the ground). I don’t know if that happen to your WEN generator too? It was not got damage from the heat at all! Thanks
Got it... I think you got a bad plastic case on the generator. Sounds like a manufacturing defect for sure. My handle is pretty solid. When I took mine out of the box, the exhaust was off center, not sure if it was dropped or something, but after running it for a while, it straightened out. Might be worth giving the company a call and see if they will replace the case.
wow... that does seem flimsy. No, mine doesn't have that problem, it appears to be a pretty solid handle. Not sure why yours is like that other than poor quality check on WEN's part. Give them a call and see what they have to say, have nothing to lose.
After running for about twenty minutes... the exhaust centered itself. Probably shifted during shipping and the vibration of running it fixed it. Works great!
Are the parts interchangeable between those 2 units? They look like a re-branded copy of each other. For instance, the bezel that surrounds the control panel, the off and on switch, econo throttle switch, and the battery charge plug look identical. I was wondering if other aspects of the generators were the same too. From what I can see the outer casings are different, but the machines are very similar, if not identical. Edit: I just did a specification check and they both have a 79.7cc engine. I think they are the same machine with a different outer shell.
Hey Jim... I agree, I believe they are the same machine. I would say that the parts are interchangeable for sure! Find the parts for one... you've found the parts for both!
@@OregonBatman I watched the video again and paid close attention to how the engine looked while the covers were off, and they both look very darn similar. Having said that, have either of you had problems with your machine? I'm trying to research a budget friendly unit for camping, and I'm looking at the 2000 watt class. Thanks.
@@jimdent351 No problems as of yet... been a while since I started the Wen. Went almost a year without running and fired up on third pull. I generally shut the choke down to run it out of fuel before storage so the lines and carb are empty. So far... so good! Had to use it a couple times when power went out and hasn't failed me yet. Been a while, so time to get it out and do a review after this long. What's it been, couple years now?
@@OregonBatman From my research, it would appear that they both use the same engine that Yamaha uses in their 2000 and 2200 watt generators. Yamaha calls it the MZ80. engine. That knowledge should make it easier to get engine parts.
That much draw on a 100ft extension cord is ill advised. I have seen cords like that melt when drawing 15A constantly since most of them are only rated for 10-12A.
@@bobss7 OP didn't say what size AC. I'm not sure where you got 5k BTU from. Regardless, I've seen a lot of people try to use a 100ft 16g extension cord on RVs. For anyone wondering, it can melt your power cord or start an electrical fire.
Hi Al! Great demonstration! Jack seems to be quite a character! Early on I seriously thought of buying this type of generator, but, if one loses power at home the probability of the gas station being shutdown also to go buy gas and oil is imminent. After watching this video I’m not sure I could deal with the noise they both make! I ‘do’ like the price as compared to my Delta Ecoflow Pro at $3599! Quite the difference! Thanks for sharing! Have a blessed day! ~Jim~
There's no way to know from an automatic leveling camera. Sorry. I work in pro audio and it would be difficult even with our most expensive gear. There are a lot of factors including the base and harmonic frequencies your ears are hearing.
In another utube review of the Wen I saw it came with a specialist funnel to introduce the oil so to avoid the mess/leak. You can download an app for your smart phone to measure dB.
Hi Dimitris! Yes sir... the Wen came with a funnel and a tube, but the tube did not fit into the opening of the oil fill, made a mess at first. I'll have to modify and get a smaller tube to do the job! That should cure the messy part! :)
One thing else to consider (that I have not seen in any reviews of the Predator), is the parts availibility from Harbor Freight. I have never had to replace any parts on my Predator, but in the past I have been able to get parts for other items purchased from HF. Just something to consider..
@@MrChris-bx7ss I don't remember how long I have waited for parts in the past, but I'd guess most came in about a week. I guess it would depend on if/where they have the part(s). I might keep my eye open for a cheap non running predator on CL, just in case.
I found it very difficult to order parts from harbor freight for my predator 3500. The part number you need to order isn't the same as the part number is called. I had to call HF to get the number and order. I just wanted a spare air filter assembly, spark arrestor, and oil door. It actually took a few days to get someone at the 800 number. I also had to get the part number from a different department, then do the actual ordering from a customer service number. It took months for my entire order to come in. I couldn't see updates on the website or order spare parts from the website. My generator has worked fine though, I would just hate to have an actual problem and have to go through harbor freight. The WEN website is easy and I can already see the spare parts I want to get. I'm an odd bird when it comes to spare parts, I order consumables when I get an item because a lot of times products change and you can't get them anymore. I like to have a spare air filter, or whatever, ready to go so I can just swap things out if I have to maintain during extended use.
For those new to generators, it's a good idea not to exceed 1/2 the rated output of the generator during the breaking-in period. The reason is the moving parts are still new in the engine and you are trying to "seat" the rings properly. This will give you the maximum life out of the generator. Also a good idea to vary the load.
Great tip... we bring the generators out twice a month and run with no load for a while, then run with a load (about half). Almost ready for first oil change. Try to run 1 to 2 hours before putting away... seems to run better each time!
Wrong, during break in you want cylinder pressure to seat the rings that’s the only thing that is happening, cross hatch grinds rings for a perfect seat, many many tests have been done, research for yourself doesn’t matter what the instructions say you want to load it straight from the get as the cross hatch smooths very quickly, and blow by produces acidic oil so the better the rings seat the longer the life will be.....
I’m putting a small 5000 btu window unit in a truck camper I’m now configuring, just an A.R.E. bed cap/topper. I’ll either stick the AC unit in a window when I get to my site, or figure a way to plumb it in. Besides the AC, and mind you they have these tiny Frigidaire units now that don’t pull a lot of amps, could these 2000s also handle a bulb or two, a TV, etc? It didn’t sound like either of those was struggling with that old, inefficient AC of yours at all! As everyone has done, I’ve been eyeing the Predator 3000, but I just don’t think I need it and my back ain’t what she used to be. Either are my muscles.
Hello Ira Rather! I don't think it would be a problem running a light or two, maybe even the TV while air conditioner is running. The air conditioner didn't seem to pull that much power at all. Give it a try, think you'll find it will run okay! Thanks for stopping by!
I must have a newer model of the Wen. The exhaust is lined up right and my front panel is set up a little differently. Runs great and I’d buy it again.
Happy with mine as well... haven't started it in two years. Changed the oil, drained gas and refilled, two pulls and fired right up! Great little unit!
Thanks Anthony! Yes... the same dip stick fits both. Not sure that they are really needed as most of the engine is aluminum, with the exception of the piston rings. But always a little added surety. :) Thanks for watching!
There is a cable that can be purchased and both can be paralleled together. As long as they are the same wattage, I think it works. Someone commented on that and posted a picture of how it was done, just need the cable
Currently, we have ran the generators to the point they just run out of gas. There is a way to let them run dry for storage without running out of gas. Turn the dial back to the point it wants to shut off, then open it enough to let it run... then after a little bit, the gas will run dry and shut off, emptying the fuel line but not the tank.
Hi Torrance! It will depend on the deep freezer, but I would say it should. The Generators will handle up to 13 amps draw. The freezer might draw that when the compressor kicks on at first. So if the freezer is fairly small and runs on 5 amps or so... it should be safe to run.
Went with the predator 2000 based on your videos, any reason why it goes out on overload after 3 or 4 hours?.not very happy it will not keep my 500 watt a/c wall unit going.
Is it an older A/C? Just curious... when the compressor kicks in, it could be pulling more juice than the generator can put out. You could try and put a load tester to it to see what it draws . I would think that the genny could handle it though
Sure can. Most AC units around 5000 BTUs will run on these generators. Some higher BTU rated units run on 110ac but they may push the wattage limits above the surge capacity of these generators at start up.
In your experience, do all generators ship dry/without oil? I just purchased one and the gas tank smells faintly of gas and the dipstick had some oil on it. I was actually able to pour out about an ounce of new-ish looking oil. I think this generator has been used before. Just looking for some experience. thank you!
Hey Mike219... the factory, if they have quality standards, will test the engine before packaging. So there will be a small amount of fuel residue and oil. They then have to drain the tank and crankcase for shipping... due to hazmat laws. Don't be alarmed if you smell fuel or see a bit of oil. Just know that the engine has been tested and passed the test. Hope that helps!
@@OregonBatman It does help and I REALLY appreciate your response. FYI I realized I didn't mention but it's a Wen so hoping I have no problems with it. Again, thank you so much for your response and love your videos!
The tank holds about one US gallon, and generally add the recommended amount of stabilizer to the fuel from directions on container. I don't remember exactly how much that is....
My favorite videos, side by side real world tests. Some inverter generators recommend not using eco mode when anticipating high start up loads like some tools, A/Cs, refrigerators, etc. I don't know if these two mention that. I agree that the oil add mode is harder on the WEN, , but the everyday checking the oil seems easier. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for giving me a hearted comment. I respect your work, you show me respect. This is how it is supposed to work, not how it always works. Thank you.
That exhaust position on the Wen looked off. Wonder if it’s meant to be that way, or they just didn’t mine it up in China. Oh! At the start, while not louder, the Wen’s “rumble” the sound’s “Pitch” sounded higher just a bit. But both sounded about the same decibels. Good test. but we aren’t campers; I’d love to know if they’d run a standard 20cu ft fridge/freezer?
Hi Deni, good observation! Depending on the type of refrigerator you have, most run using approximately 725 to 800 watts, pulling around 5 to 7 amps. These generators are capable of running 8 continuous amps. It's the start up of the compressors that will pull the most power. If at start up, it draws more than 13 amps... you will need a larger generator... perhaps a 3000 watt. Hope that helps.
OregonBatman Thanks so much! I’m even looking at those, what I’ll call Battery Generators with Solar. But there are so many types on the market, it’s hard to figure out what to do. But these 2 look manageable for us. We’re not as “youthful” as you two guys. Thanks again!
LOL!! You know, if you owned two of these generators, you can parallel them together to make 4000 watts. When you don't need that much power, just use one. :)
Also, I believe that the Predator is only a 79 cc engine and the Honda which is rated for the same starting and running watts is over 90 cc. This doesn't really matter if it does what you need it to do but it is something to keep in mind.
Hi Tom! Generators are going strong.... Jack sold his trailer w/gen set, and the guy who bought it travels to Alaska, far as I know, no problems. The Wen still fires up (about two pulls) and purrs like a kitten. So far, very pleased with it!
thanks guys. trying to decide on one of these smaller generators...after finding out it will run a A/C 5000 unit no problem. 600 watt microwave, heater etc. without problem. was hoping it would run a/c. and tolerate the Small microwave occ use plus an LED TV and maybe 1-2 lights.. Watts seem to add up OK. looking at Westinghouse 2200 also...has 3 year warranty plus xtra 200 watts. hmmm
Hi miragexI007! Nothing wrong with a little more power!! :) Sounds like a good deal Westinghouse 2200 with the warranty and all! Should handle your needs!
I used to run my fishing cabin on the predator 3500 inverter gen, It was overkill running a 5000btu, a light bulb and a portable dvd player. Got tired of hauling it in the woods and switched to the 56200i. Just have to fill up more often but it works fine on eco and is easier on my back.
Hi Jeffry P! According to all of the WEN specs, this generator produces safe power to run electronics. "Designed to mirror a pure sine wave, this generator limits total harmonic distortion to under 0.3 percent at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load, making it safe enough to run laptops, cellphones, monitors, tablets and other vulnerable electronics" AND, "Produces clean power to safely operate and prevent damage to sensitive electronics such as smart phones, tablets, televisions and computers". I personally... wouldn't be afraid to run my electronics using this generator. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Absolutely good deal!! Its been a couple years since I owned mine and high time I get it out and show it off after two years use. Came in handy after a winter power outage last year, love this thing! Wishing you the best on your purchase!
Hi dunno yolo! Wen holding up strong, I would have no issue with purchasing this generator again. Predator and Wen are just about the same, I think the Predator has a better warranty plan though through HF. Pay the extra and if any problems, return it for a new one. Thanks for stopping by!
Is the inverter of the true sine variety ? I know if you run any inductive loads (basically anything with an electric motor - airco's, compressors and the like) you need your inverter to be a true sine one...otherwise you eventually kill the electric motor inside the thing you try to power...
Hi Sander Tel, according to all of the WEN specs, this generator produces safe power to run electronics. "Designed to mirror a pure sine wave, the generator limits total harmonic distortion to under 0.3 percent at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load, making it safe enough to run laptops, cellphones, monitors, tablets and other vulnerable electronics" AND, "Produces clean power to safely operate and prevent damage to sensitive electronics such as smart phones, tablets, televisions and computers". Perhaps not a TRUE sine wave... but from the reviews I've seen, people run many tools using this gen set, so I would say it's probably good for those applications. Thanks for stopping by!
Nice side by side comparison men. I'm leaning towards the Predator knowing the oil fill and muffler offset on the Wen. I have an old Honda that puts right along. No need to replace yet. You guys are ready to go camping again. Weather should be better next time.
Thanks Matt... I think if I had to do it all over again, Predator would be the choice I'd make, but I can live with what I got. Honda's are great... don't figure you'd need to replace for quite a long time! I'm ready to go for sure!
@@OregonBatman that would be a good test with the RV style air conditioners. Or even go back and do what you did with the air conditioner the little window AC on a 25 or 50 foot heavy duty thick gauge extension cord. Real world conditions or plug into Shore power in the RV. Because if you run this little AC more than likely you're going to have to use an extension cord.
My 2200 watt suitcase style sportsman portable generator on propane 15 amp max. would not run my 12,000 BTU 12 amp old rotary knob air conditioner. And I first tried to run it with just the fan on for a while. And that was no extension cord on it. AC plug directly into generator. It was a fail.
Hmm. I bought a very lightly used Honda for just about the same money as they did. Let's test these against the Honda in, say... 10 years. The predator motors I've used from HF work great, for a year or two. They just won't last. The Honda, in my opinion, though more expensive innitially, will be much cheaper in the long run. I have a 30+ year old Honda riding mower that still starts/runs like a brand new one.
@@trbig67 Times have changed my friend,... I sold my friend a brand new Honda mower 28 years ago & it still starts on the first pull with the original spark plug,... I know many people who have had issue with Honda product including my brother with his minivan's dead transmission at 60,000 miles that Honda did NOT help him with at all :( Ha ha, I was the Parts Manager for years in Australia's biggest Honda power equipment dealer & we retailed Honda mowers, one at a time to individual customers & one year we sold more than the entire country of New Zealand out of one store lol but now I live in The States, I just purchased the 1000 watt Sportsman Inverter Generator for $199 with free delivery ;)

5:31 On the WEN there is a button near the 12V outlet that is labeled "ON" and "OFF." Is there an actual circuit breaker for 12V? Don't see a circuit breaker for 120V on the WEN either. Predator has circuit breakers for both the 12V and 120V outlets. They are clearly labeled. 10:50 Can't you just work a rag under the fill/drain port before you start filling? The rag is ready to absorb on overfill.
Hi birdwing98! I believe the Wen only has a reset button if things pop, the on/off is for the Eco Run. Turn that on and the motor runs quiet until a load is put on it then it boosts up. Wen I got the Wen, the engine had shifted in shipping, closing the gap so I couldn't put a rag in to catch the oil. Since running it, the engine relocated itself making oil change much easier now!
Hi rohan tiwari! Depending on the load you are pulling from the generator you can average between 6 and 8 hours on a low load, and 4 to 6 on a high load. So if you are running the generator to charge your batteries and maybe a small refrigerator, it will run for quite a while... if you are running larger items that need a lot of power, the generator will need to be refueled after 4 or 5 hours. Hope that helps!
@@OregonBatman I just wanted to run some led light for 5-8 hours +charging 12 battery +small portable camping refrigerator ,I think then it will go for 8 hours without problem
But, the biggy question is: how long will they run the Air Conditioner? They all show 'work' but how long do they last? How often do you have to fill the gas tank?
Good question... haven't run the air condition that long to find out. Once the area is cooled, the compressor will not be running all of the time. You can expect anywhere from 4 to 6 hours before refueling.
Hey Neil! Great question... I think both of these generators have a 1 gal tank and can run anywhere between 4 - 8 hours depending on the load. Currently, mine has run about 7 hours before needing fuel.
See some bad reviews on Wen web site but cost seems really reasonable !! That includes run times of about 5 hours a gallon on full power ! NOT jumper cables 2:10 charger cables !!!!! DO NOT expect to boaster start your car with it that way , just charge the battery up !
I have been waiting for a review like this. Thank you gentlemen
Glad to have helped!
Nice to see two friends enjoying a review 👍🏽 , God Bless You
Couple of cool guys that I wouldn't mind hanging out with.
Thanks MrNightro!

Predator is way more quiet than the Wen. I used my studio head phones just to compare. well done gentleman..
Thank you Jason Day... I am inclined to believe the Predator is quieter too!
The only way to know for sure if it is very close is a db meter. You can't tell on a video because the camera normalizes the audio to a set level.
L O L your fancy headphones don't matter ... My God this world is filled with some silly gooses

Good testimony to a good product! Thank you for sharing!
How long will it run the AC before refueling

2100 hours on mine...original spark plug also... Not a hint of issues! 12 hours runtime with my load on a 1.18 gallon (full tank). Its hook to my 39 ft 5th wheel!
What are the specs for power on the AC you are running with it?
Nice review. One thing that always gets me is, Why does everyone always open these packages the same way ?

Awesome, thanks guys. It's people like you who keep America's gears oiled and the public informed of important consumer choices.
Nice Heads Up on two gens I've been wondering about. Thanks men! Watchin from Manitoba. Good Luck.
Thank you T D!
Remove the side panel for servicing the Wen . Use the little access door for checking oil level.

The Predator 3500 has electric start which is a nice feature on a low cost genny.

They said they dont have parts in any store, they have to mae a special order to china and that is why it takes so long. When he plugged in a load and turned the power on... the surge went away. Ran it for a little while and everything was fine again. We fired them up a few weeks ago and all is back to normal. Try starting, let it warm up (even if it surges), then put a load on it and let it run. See if that helps.

Just a Note For those Who Purchased Either , The predator uses the same inverter board as the wen, I E : the WEN Predator and Ryobi 2kw models are produced in the same factory. so when your predator Inevitably kicks the inverter bucket You can replace the predator board ( 320.00) with a oem Wen Board for 150.00
That's a great fun fact right there!

Good advice... I let Jack know we should run the generators for about an hour then change oil out. Hopefully they'll last for years to come!
there are free apps for the smartphones that you can use to meter decibel levels. I would have liked to see that during all the testing.
Thanks Wesley... we didn't think of that.

Too bad. 😕
Feel free to checkout my camper trailer build. It’s on my channel called “Campy Camperton”
I was thinking the same thing. Very helpful comparison!
someone put the exhaust cover on wrong on the wen, mine is not like that
I know, right?
Now how did I miss this video? Again another informative video. Thanks so much for sharing.
We sneaked this one in! :) Hoping to hit a spot where we can light them up and go totally off grid... we're ready for it!
Not loud enough I am looking 4 a 2 stroke yz250 with a exhaust system on mine so when when my ac cuts on it will wake up neighbors 2 miles out....

If you happen to be 2iles from me, be ready for a beating
Is there an extended run fuel cap for the Wen that will let it siphon off of an external gas can, Like a Honda?
Someone else researched that idea and came up empty... I believe they ended up making their own, but it had to be sort of a gravity fed system. Not something I wanted to try
Really good comparison video guys 👍👍👍 I wouldn’t have purchased the predator before I watched the video! I know a lot of generators are manufactured by the same company.
22:15 what about when that light kicked on
I'm SURE they didn't mean to ignore you.
Add a hard start kit (capacitor) to your A/C to make startup easier on the genny.
cz luver I did this , well my son did it for me, I ran it off of the little 2 stroke 1000 watts.

I have the same predator. But I am wanting the 2250 wen ( on sale right now) to parallel together. Same parallel outlets. You think that could work?
I am not sure... what I am finding is that you want to parallel to generator with same output. You might have to do a little research to see if this is possible, you don't want to loose one (or both) trying to find out.
@@OregonBatman I thank you so much sir!
@@gootjuicehotsauce Without a doubt
@@OregonBatman Well I did the parallel video of my predator and wen 2250. It works! Check it out predator paralleled with wen 2250. Is a little shaky quality. Am new to this!
No doubt about it... it worked! Pretty cool!
Love my Predator - we got the paralell kit for two of them
That's awesome! I think they are great generators!
Great presentation covering all the essentials of a user
Thank you sudhir!
The wen went on sale today at Amazon for $340. Harbor freight has a sale June 7th that will bring theirs down to 449.00. I picked up two Wens.
Perfect price! I missed the sale from Home Depot at $358, and paid more for mine... good score!
Looking for something to power my new pop up camper when we're out in the woods on atv trips, would one of these fit the purpose? or do i need bigger?
Nope.. one of these should fit the bill. Unless you are bringing along home airconditioners, curling irons, big microwaves. :) But, if you want to power small fridge, a few lights, coffee maker... this will be plenty!
many thanks for this...I am shopping for one of these, so this really helps!
Glad to have helped Christie210!
Sure sounds like the Wen was louder idling, and with heater, but not as loud with the air conditioner. NIce thorough comparison.
You got it! Thanks for stopping by!
Nice video, bought my predator last year. Best choice I could have made
I couldn't agree more... very nice little machine!
OregonBatman th-cam.com/video/yNAFcf0iMJ4/w-d-xo.html
I posted the video to see if you have the same problem, thanks
wow... that does seem flimsy. No, mine doesn't have that problem, it appears to be a pretty solid handle. Not sure why yours is like that other than poor quality check on WEN's part. Give them a call and see what they have to say, have nothing to lose.
How did the back of the WEN do with the exhaust being no centered?

I would it love to see the ac test with a 100 feet extension cord. If will be using the ac for sleeping only .
That much draw on a 100ft extension cord is ill advised. I have seen cords like that melt when drawing 15A constantly since most of them are only rated for 10-12A.
Just make sure to use a 12 gauge extension cord!

Great review from my listening the predator sounds quieter and better in general
I agree... and running side by side, I think the Predator has less vibration too!
There's no way to know from an automatic leveling camera. Sorry. I work in pro audio and it would be difficult even with our most expensive gear. There are a lot of factors including the base and harmonic frequencies your ears are hearing.
Sorry, but there's no way you can tell from TH-cam. Microphone placement, audio levels, etc.
Wen wins hands down
My opinion is : there is no loss in our money when we buy each of them .. and they are beautiful 😍 .
Very true! Thank you!
I got a part from them too....about 3 months later.
Better buy a 2nd predator for backup whilst u wait for a part.
Great Presentation Guy's....... THUMBS UP !!!
Thank you JESUSisGODourSAVIOUR!
Wondering if you could give me an idea of how long these generators runtime
Depending on what you are powering... anywhere from 6-8 hours for low consumption, less on full power
Nice work Guys, I think I'm leaning towards the predator
Thank you Fuad! With the warranty HF offers, can't beat the Predator!
Great job guys. Thank you
Where did u get the other dipstick from
I think I purchased that from Amazon... not sure if it was really needed, but using it anyway :)
Great video guys thank you. I was wondering if the magnetic dip stick for the for the Wen fits the Predator.
Thanks Anthony! Yes... the same dip stick fits both. Not sure that they are really needed as most of the engine is aluminum, with the exception of the piston rings. But always a little added surety. :) Thanks for watching!
Will the two different generators parallel together? Or do they have to be the same brand/type/wattage output, etc?
There is a cable that can be purchased and both can be paralleled together. As long as they are the same wattage, I think it works. Someone commented on that and posted a picture of how it was done, just need the cable
@@OregonBatman , Thank you sir. Great video!
@@bj78spider Thank ya BJ!
Did you give the A/C enough time for the head pressure to drop B4 you ran it on the Wen?
I think so... hadn't run that A/C for months before plugging in. Fired right up and started blowing cold... worked pretty good!
@David Hollfelder - Interesting... so what's the procedure/how long should one wait to allow hp to drop on an a/c?
How do you remove the gas if you need to store it? Does it have a Run Dry System?
Currently, we have ran the generators to the point they just run out of gas. There is a way to let them run dry for storage without running out of gas. Turn the dial back to the point it wants to shut off, then open it enough to let it run... then after a little bit, the gas will run dry and shut off, emptying the fuel line but not the tank.
@@OregonBatman Thanks for the Tip :o)
There's also a drain hose with valve
can you run a small deep freezer on these generators
Does the wen dip stick fit on the predator
Hi Ezequiel! Yes... appears they are universal. The thread is the same. We swapped them out for the magnetic dip stick.
OregonBatman thank you ! 😊
Can you run a small 110 ac with one of those?
Sure can. Most AC units around 5000 BTUs will run on these generators. Some higher BTU rated units run on 110ac but they may push the wattage limits above the surge capacity of these generators at start up.
I have a question for anyone who knows? Is the Honda better than the wen or predator?
Thanks Mike! My Wen sat for about a year without running, pulled it out in hopes it still ran, 2 pulls and it was going! Happy with it so far!
What is the fuel capacity of the predator and recommended stabilizer amount?
Thank you.
Thank you. The only thing I am curios about is the exhaust.
When I took the WEN out of the box, the exhaust was off center.... but after running it for about 20 minutes, it straightened right out.
OregonBatman -Now THAT’S a good idea 💡😉
Also, I believe that the Predator is only a 79 cc engine and the Honda which is rated for the same starting and running watts is over 90 cc. This doesn't really matter if it does what you need it to do but it is something to keep in mind.
True that... I am guessing that is why the Predator out performs the Honda in run time. Predator uses less gas and runs for a longer time.
Great video. Thanks for uploading
How are both generators doing now? It's been over a year now... Thanks

Anyone knows if the sine wave is actually a real sine wave or a square wave? Meaning will sensitive computer equipment run well with these generators?
Hi Jeffry P! According to all of the WEN specs, this generator produces safe power to run electronics. "Designed to mirror a pure sine wave, this generator limits total harmonic distortion to under 0.3 percent at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load, making it safe enough to run laptops, cellphones, monitors, tablets and other vulnerable electronics" AND, "Produces clean power to safely operate and prevent damage to sensitive electronics such as smart phones, tablets, televisions and computers". Hows the WEN working so far ? Would you buy again ?
Hi dunno yolo! Wen holding up strong, I would have no issue with purchasing this generator again. Predator and Wen are just about the same, I think the Predator has a better warranty plan though through HF. Pay the extra and if any problems, return it for a new one. Thanks for stopping by!
@@OregonBatman I have heard that the predator is near to impossible to get any parts for basically a throw away generator.

@@OregonBatman right, get a new gen, then pay for another warranty! You can only use it once.

They are the same generator. They are both made by Wen.They are knock off of the Yamaha i2000
You think they would run a 14,000 btu ac unit? Mine says max draw is 1250 watts.
I'm thinking it should... max is 2000 watts... continuous 1600. 1250 is below that, so should run as long as you don't have something else plugged in!
Very true... I didn't make a video, but have tested the units on extension cords and everything was fine.

Can you please tell me how long it runs on 1 litre fuel ?? In hours ??
Hi rohan tiwari! Depending on the load you are pulling from the generator you can average between 6 and 8 hours on a low load, and 4 to 6 on a high load. So if you are running the generator to charge your batteries and maybe a small refrigerator, it will run for quite a while... if you are running larger items that need a lot of power, the generator will need to be refueled after 4 or 5 hours. Hope that helps!
@@OregonBatman I just wanted to run some led light for 5-8 hours +charging 12 battery +small portable camping refrigerator ,I think then it will go for 8 hours without problem
Its simply amazing.....in China they build these things with all the Guts being the same..... just a different shell in many cases.
I would like to ask a couple questions I hardly ever hear anyone ask. How much gasoline does it take and how long will the gasoline run?
Excellent video fair test. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, and thanks for stopping by!
