I love your story. Thank you for telling it. Seeing a junk journal that’s been used is fascinating. I have what I call a smash journal. I just smash stuff into it. Lots of cool candy wrappers, cartoons, pithy quotes from here and there. I write stuff down on anything right away, then smash that in. I use tape and glue and staples. It’s a hodgepodge of ephemera. And I love it. Bless you for having the discipline to write regularly. I wish...

I prefer the different papers over digital. To my eye, digital looks too homogeneous and the papers tend to be thinner than I like. Although, they are beautiful!

What a nice reflection... Once upon a time, a lady named Diann was smitten with a different way to craft....from smash books to journals...lots in between... So endearing... Your work is beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for sharing!😌

What an interesting journey!! I retired from teaching early so I could care for my grandson. I was very used to being organized with my daily plan book for lessons. So I found bullet journals...I watched a few videos and like you said for some reason I stumbled upon junk journals. I watched more videos and sadly my daughter and grandson moved away and I now had some time on my hands. I never considered myself a crafty person, I just didn't have time. But I did love paper and books and well, that did it. I don't sell my journals and have just used them as gifts. Although my next project is one I have been asked to do for someone I don't know. I have only been doing it for a year. ☺️

I have journaled most of my life. I got rid of close to 50 or 60 journals that I had filled with nothing but my writing when I retired in 2013. I continued to buy pretty journals and writing in them everyday. Close to a year and half ago, I entered the word "journal" into the search engine on TH-cam. That is how I stumbled into junk journals, and it took me back to the day when I would have my secondary students decorate their journals for the year. My students loved it. Anyway, it just seemed so natural for me to transition into making journals, and I just love it.

My road is more like a two track. lol I found a video from Shannon Green about paper tubes and she does art journaling. That lead me to Cali Black who also did assemblage collage which was a huge appeal for me. I began watching a couple other altered books channels and somewhere along came referred videos for junk journaling. I think one of yours was one of the first.
Due to scheduling and some life things, my play time is sorely limited so I putz along on my first altered book and at the same time, I'm collecting components for junk journals. I have dabbled with some tag making and the such but am still slowly walking towards the end goal of completing the book AND a journal. Once a few things in life get settled, I will be able to devote a space and time to pursuing this fascinating art.

Thank you for sharing your story Diane... My sister introduced me to her Stampin’Up group on a visit in Ottowa and I fell in love with cardmaking, attended classes with Jennifer McGuire etc...then started playing with mix media techniques with the best crafters Tim Holtz,Balzer and this past weekend a whole day with Dyan Reavely etc... on searching for videos I found junk journal junkies and was hooked in this craft also...I learned the basics from another Canadian who owns EVG Debbie Ann,she is the best teacher ,so patient and to the point.I make journals for my family members and friends as gifts.I am a passionate collector and owner of many journals of every styles.l am limited in my crafting this last year because of severe pain in my hands due to arthritis-rheumatism...I keep hoping for some kind of miracle cure....meanwhile I love to entertain myself and learn from all the tutorials from the generous bookmakers and crafters out there....

I started as a scrapbooker, then I discovered mini albums. I started making and selling paper bag albums decorated with vintage book illustrations in 2006, so technically I was junk journaling before there was any such thing! Around 2010, I discovered Pinterest and saw regular writing journals made from old books. The spines had been cut off and the covers and papers were bound with a bind-it-all. I had to try it, so I invested in a Bind-it-all. I made some notebooks with old postcards as the cover, and with 45 records cut in half. But I always had trouble getting the larger coils to compress evenly and so the bindings were always wonky. I’m impressed with how perfectly your smashbooks are bound! Anyway, I gave it up out of frustration with the binding, but once I discovered pamphlet stitching, I got excited about making junk journals again, and it’s evolved ever since. What I really love making are the journals made from old things, like vintage greeting cards, bingo cards, etc.

Love your work! A couple years ago I was really sick and in bed watching TH-cam when I saw my first junk journal. It was love at first sight and I've been obsessed ever since! I've always loved paper crafting and junk journals are just the most scrumptious things ever. I haven't ever used digital kits, though they're beautiful, because part of the thrill for me is thrift shops and random things friends give me because they know I'll take any paper item off their hands! (Not to mention the piles of paper I already had) Unfortunately I haven't had much crafting time for a long while but hope one of these days to get back at it. Thanks for sharing.

I sure did enjoy this video.. I started making what I've always called 'art journals' almost 20 years ago. I didn't have a computer back then, nor anyone to teach me... soooo I would make small books , have a theme, and go from there. I think it started because I was curious as to how to 'bind a book'. Well I"m still doing that, and still loving it.. and now there are so many talented journal makers like you to inspire me.
    hugs, Barbra Joan

Hi Diane: I enjoyed your journey story and I have to say I never knew what a junk journal was until I stumbled across one on pintrest about a year or so ago. You were one of the first people I started to watch and I remember I wanted to save everything you were doing. I finally figured out I could subscribe to your channel at no cost as well as many others. So here I am a little over a year later watching and making and enjoying it so much. Every aspect of this craft really speaks to me so it was kind of an easy transition from some of my other crafts. Thank you for your time and talent and most of all inspiration.

I like your style--I love using odds and bits and pieces of different papers, too. The wire binding is something I haven't tried--it makes writing in the journal easier than the stitched binding since the pages lie flat. But I love the old-fashioned look of the sewn bindings, too.

I began Bible journaling and saw someone's fairy journal they had made. I also started decorating planners and made a 3 ring prayer journal. Then I began searching for those kinds of things on Pinterest and found junk journals! Then came You Tube searches for videos so I could learn how to make them. I have made an altered Golden Book and I also make cards. I also made a Christmas December daily journal last year. I have 5 junk journals I am currently working on but had to stop to move my office/studio and work on cards. They will be the first ones that I sew in. I'm a little nervous but plan to re-watch the binding videos I've saved. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

I, too, was on Pintrest and saw a recipe journal that caught my eye because my Mom and passed and I had all of her handwritten recipes that I wanted to keep somehow. When I saw how adorable it was, I just had to try and make one. Then on TH-cam, up popped an interesting journal called "Junk Journal." I was fascinated with them. I ordered one just to have as an example. I was hooked. I have made journals just to use for myself or give to my friends. I have only sold one of mine. Not confident enough with mine. Love watching your videos. Love your recipe journals.(especially the Apron lady type recipe journals. Love your style, too.

Love your story, it really is true that once you start journaling, art journaling or junk journaling you ever a certain direction. I, too, love junk journaling. I started by taking an art journaling workshop, by a very artistic teacher. Was fun, but my journal was eclectic, and I started watching TH-cam junk journal videos. I tried all different methods, but still like making my own ephemera, and recycling as much as I can, into the junk journal. Thanks so much for showing your metamorphosis!

Love your story Diane. My story has a similar path. November 2017, looking at pinterest I found you tube and junk journals. I must say, this hobby is the only craft projects that has kept my interest for more than a year and half. Nothing in the past lasted more than a few weeks or a few end products. And a lot of that has to do with your videos, Diane and a few other favorite artists. Unfortunately I have not found a way to sell them. On etsy, when I had a shop selling junk journals I did not sell any. One day I searched for my shop. I think I found it at # 400 on the list of jj. So now I have a house full of supplies and ready made journals and cannot stop creating!!! You keep at it Diane, your work is fabulous!

    Hi Diane,
Great story of your journey to Junk journaling! Loved hearing it.
As for me, I too grew up writing in journals/pads of paper. I would collage in them and add ephemera from places I went. I have always been drawn to paper of all types, so journals were created even using corrugated cardboard before it was fashionable LOL!! Junk before there was even junk journaling. 1994 I started scrapbooking with Creative Memories and it was fine but I always kept my eclectic style and had journals too. as scrapbooking evolved I loved the paper and finally left my CM ways behind. Now I was so excited to see small ring binders being used for scrapbook and then smash books of course etc...so on and so forth! About 1.5 yrs ago I sewed my first junk journal!!! it was fun and I have been hooked! previously I had used my scrapbooking adhesives and stapling method to make journals. So, Junk journaling with the sewn binding method has been a wonderful adventure. LOVING IT! Yes, I too have so many supplies! Let me know if you are in need of any particular thing...I am sure I have it what ever it is LOL
Thanks for reading my short story. I do have a YT channel I post periodically. I don't sell my journals though...as of yet. Blessing and HUGs

I remember when! You have progressed into finding your own style. I'm glad to hear you'll be going back and revisiting some of your earlier creations. My favs have always been the smash books (it's how i found you) and your junkie jjs, as those are how I found junk journaling. They were the eclectic ones with a little of this and a little of that. I don't print much and although the books made with digitals are very lovely, they aren't my favs nor my style. And I still use my BIA, lol... My progression was Cards, Making supplies for others, Mini Albums, Smash books, to Junk Journals and now back to supplies for them, with a few books here and there. From a distance, your future in this fun world we've created looks very bright! Hugs ~ L

So I started watching TH-cam to get some ideals and inspiration. I didn't know junk journals existed until then. I really got hooked watching videos and I really loved the vintage junk journals, so I started making junk journals and opened my Etsy store last July and iam loving it. Thank you for sharing Diane! I am not a journaler(sp?) but I absolutely love making journals! At first I loved the look of mini albums but knew right away that wasn't my style. too structured maybe. Then I tried altering books, but I didn't like the way the pages looked after gluing them together, could never get them not to warp. so I moved on to journals. I don't use a lot of 'junk' in mine but I do like to use genuine vintage papers and ephemera. Fortunately I have been able to find quite a lot at thrift stores, flea markets, rummage sales and even on the curb during our city-wide clean up! :-) I also finally found the true use for my sewing machine! :-) I'm sure you hear this a lot, but your videos have been a huge source of inspiration for me, so thank you so very much for sharing! All the best - Val

Yes they are pretty but I just love the variety provided by the other types and love those with vintage children's books pages etc. I have a shelf full of the K & Co smash books waiting to be smashed in, but I love the JJ's also so the smash books lust look pretty on my shelf. I keep thinking I should probably sell them. I too have stacks of stuff for JJ's and love hunting for more. Thanks for the video.

Yeah, Julie, I still remember the thrill of that giant box of vintage yumminess you sent me! I think that was my first happy mail (other than the wonderful "extras" I received with swaps. And that was a doozy of a happy mail!!!

Thank you for your story! I enjoyed seeing all of your different types of journals. I’ve been a crafter forever, but the junk journal seems to combine my love of books and crafting. I tend to hoard paper, fabric, and books, but now I have found a purpose to use it all! You and Gayle are the two artists that have taught me everything I know about this craft.

Thank you for sharing! I had no idea how those circular bindings were made or that there was a machine that cut the rectangular holes and closed the circles. I think your hubby would love you to make a few smash books, after all, he saw that passion in you early on when he bought you that Zutter! 🌸🌹💃💖🌺🌻🌷🌱🐝

I enjoyed hearing how you evolved into making junk journals. I was curious a while back so I watched your beginning videos. I discovered journal making from Pinterest as well. It seemed like the perfect idea of combining my scrapbook and card making supplies along with my love of sewing. I find your work truly inspiring. My questions are #1 How do you find the motivation?...and #2 Do you find it difficult to give up your work?

    • @DianeHubertPrettyPinkCottage
      @DianeHubertPrettyPinkCottage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't have trouble being motivated. I want to get in my craft room and create every day! And sometimes I do have trouble letting them go. I fall in love with them. But as I have sold them, it gets easier.

Hi Ladies, years ago I fell in love with the Midori style. Way after my Smash book days 🤣 but I couldn't afford the "Original Midori" so I made my own! And Smashed it! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣 I've finally starting sewing on pages and done a hidden spine.
I prefer the junk pages over Digi kits, because no 2 are alike.

Hi Diane, love to hear your story. Wonderful journals and fun to see how styles change over the years. I have always crafted for most of my life, all kinds of crafts. Just within the last few years I went from albums to cards to journal making. I still do the other stuff, but mostly cards and journals. I just love making and filling them with ephemeria. That fabric cover journal is gorgeous, esp with the little paper dolls all over it. Could you should how to make a fabric cover of that shape with that style tie, and then how to put a journal into that?

Maybe I will do that one day, if I can do it without violating a copy right. Mary Ann Moss sells a course on how to make these journals (called "Remains of the Day"), but I didn't take the course. I figured out how to do it myself.

Loved your story as I’m very new to this art. I made paper crafts then went to sewing. Still love to sew but don’t have many projects and quilting isn’t for me. So I went back to card making and still enjoy it and have started making junk journals as gifts. I’ve bought a few so I have samples of ephemera and tags etc... I’m using my journals for various purposes besides journaling as I love having them at hand. Love your channel , when did you decide to you tube and Etsy?
