      I buy similar filter pads on ebay. Each pad I use for a year or year and a half. I don't use carbon. I use cut pressed floss. The bio media is such a small amount. I skip that. I've used this good product for about 5 years.

      There's certain expenses you must deal with if you wish for a safe, clean and healthy aquarium. How easy you want that to be depends on how much you're willing to spend, financially and time wise.

    I see that every month you change the carbon filter but in the video, it shows the black side facing out on removal then when you replaced it the white side is showing (carbon side facing sponge). Is there a reason you reversed it?

    • @fluval

      Greg, good catch, the carbon side should always be facing outward, thanks for pointing that out.

I’ve been doing all the maintenance as well at the specified interval. Just have a very young turtle in it....4 month okd

    Don’t copy this, I made the mistake of doing so and it resulted in a massive spike killing my fish. Far too often to be cleaning and replacing filter all down to money and making you buy more unnecessarily.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Toby, the video indicates the filter media should be cleaned in aquarium water, not tap water. If this is done, it's quite literally impossible to disturb your nitrifying bacteria and cause an ammonia spike.

    Where can I get the clean and clear pads. It says the closest location is 2074.4 kilometers away from me. Over 1200 miles is a little too far for a fish filter. Fluval says thats the closest one and I can't find anyone who sells it online. The filter I bought didnt even come with it. I dont know why the u1 filter even exists if you cant supply the parts.

    Does the carbon filter out plant fertiliser?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carbon, especially when new, can remove some trace elements present in many liquid plant supplements. We recommend waiting at least a week or two after having changed the carbon in your filter before dosing with a liquid plant supplement!

    It says every month replace 1 x Poly carbon cartridge isn’t there 2 one on each side, do you change both every month?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If necessary yes.

    • @adamhooper2476
      @adamhooper2476 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I replace them every month but 2 weeks apart from each other. So side 1 is replaced, 2 weeks later, side 2 is replaced, 2 weeks later side 1 is replaced again and so forth. It probably isn't necessary to do this but I like the idea that at least one will always have that extra bacteria to help with the biofilter, since the bacteria grows on everything, including the filter floss used for the PolyCarbs sheets.

    I am confused. I watched your video (many times) which shows the filter material being placed into the filter holder in two different ways, and, unless I am misunderstanding, your replies state exactly the same thing. To Greg Summers you said that the carbon side should always be facing outward and your reply to Rita B Barwick says that the carbon side faces inward to the core. Please confirm - the carbon side is the black side - yes?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joy, sorry for the confusion. The black side is the carbon side yes and the polyester side should always face the side which receives the incoming water first to mechanically cleanse it...the carbon side should be set up to remain free or debris as its job is to chemically filter dissolved substances and does so more effectively when clean.

    HI, can you please tell, how and where to place activated carbon in the aquarium ?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jyothish Jayapalan Activated carbon should be placed in a power filter to ensure good water movement throughout. Make sure to rinse it thoroughly first. Regular replacement is important as it can leach substances back into the water when saturated (for example: removal of a specific pollutant or discolouration or medication removal after treatment). You can always refer back to the instructions on the package as well.

      why and just why would you replace the biomax

    • @animalyze7120
      @animalyze7120 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bio max items can over time just get clogged up reducing the amount of Bacteria that can be in/on it, though I've never seen a reason to, you can like in the video replace half of it or just a quarter of it yearly.
      Still I agree you rarely have to mess with the Bio max material aside from a good monthly rinsing in aquarium not tap water.

    • @yehoshuacirt8645
      @yehoshuacirt8645 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You really do not need carbon at all. It's only to keep the water clear for your eyes. It's a gimmick. Doesn't help the fish.
      Good for absorbing medications at the end of treatment.
