- Toyota Yaris was originally launched at the turn of the century. Since then more than 3 million units were sold, over 200k in 2016. Made in France, the Yaris is available not just in Europe, but also in Africa, North America, Middle East, and Asia. Third generation has underwent a 90 million euro refresh, as a result of which around 900 parts were changed. External changes in the refreshed Yaris are supposed to emphasize its athletic stance, and low centre of gravity. To this effect it comes on 15, or even 16 inch alloys. Generally speaking Toyota Yaris is supposed to look more sporty. Besides redesigned elements in the front and back, new paint colors, and new alloy designs, Yaris interior also underwent cosmetic changes, which include new trim levels, new upholstery, and colorful panels. All this is supposed to make the interior look more modern. New elements are now available also on lower trim levels.

It is best reliable car for those having very tight budget.
I just bought one, pick it up soon, can't wait. Love Toyotas, here in Australia they have a great reputation for reliability and longevity. Not sure what Europeans think of them.
Pretty much the same. Boring, economical, reliable.
Had a Yaris since 2005 (1.3)...No problem mechanically..and passed its govt test every years isnce it required to have a test (after the 3rd year new).
Have a 2007 runs great 10 years never a problem.

i have a honda civic 2004 runs great until now, it needs all sort of things now all at the same time even with regular maintenance. The true with asian cars is that they use simple technology and they aim for the more reliable one, that's why they don't like turbos.
Ugh I sold mine 1.5 years ago and I regret it. It’s now my husband coworkers and it’s still doing amazing. My car I bought I’m trading in tomorrow 😱 thinking of going back to the Yaris family.

I have it 14 days already and 2.400km :) The engine is perfect for city. Pleanty of punch on 2.200rpm in every gear. I have on the computer a 4.8L avarage so far. And I do drive outside of cuty sometimes even for a 400km drive. Great overtaking, and 130km/h drive recomended on highway, where fuel cons. is not going above 6.5L. 140km/h already 8L+
A lot of leg room in the car (I am 187cm tall), front and back. And the hight of the sitting angle and the overall hight of the car are sometimes helpfull in the city. Love it so far much more than 1.4 2013 Polo.
I'm actually on the fence between 2017 Yaris Hybrid and 2017 Polo Match... would you say the Yaris is as powerful as the polo would be ? Is it very noisy / takes time to gain speed ? thx !!
I also bought this car 1 month ago and I can say its amazing car, very elegant/sporty and give a great drive. In the city, the joy of driving is amazing and so pleasant at many points the battery is used. Yesterday I was in the mountains and coming back to the city using the regenerative braking and proper driving I got fuel consumption of 2.0L/100km. I don't know where all this hate is coming for the car, but don't be fooled the car is amazing and will satisfy every city driver and not only.

@@ocmiss Hybrid Toyotas use Atkinson cycle engines for improved thermal efficiency. If you're a fast driver the Yaris Hybrid may not be the best choice since, due to the lack of high gearing at high speeds (like an old Daf Variomatic I imagine) the fuel consumption is relatively poor (Nikola mentions 8 litre + per 100 km @ 140 km/h ).
I understand that Toyota are working on this one remaining problem of needing higher gearing at higher speeds.
If you drive at no more than 100 - 120 km/h on the motorway and especially if you do a lot of city driving then the Yaris Hybrid id probably the better choice (remember with the Yaris hybrid you're getting an Automatic with superior fuel consumption to most manuals, certainly in the City).
Nikola You mention the punch @ 2,200 RPM but I was interested how you know this since there is no rev counter (no Tachometer)?

A couple of years earlier I got a speeding ticket in NL for doing 54 in a 50 zone, so I'm careful since then. Also, it was probably one of the first (if not THE first) speeding tickets issued for speeding in an EV :) It was the i3 launch event in Amsterdam in 2012.

I'd rather have a 1.5 because the larger capacity engine means lower RPMs at higher speeds. Often, larger capacity, non turbo engines get better real - work economy. They're also more reliable than a turbo as it could fail. Great review as always Marek
lower RPM is more to do with the gear ratios, than engine size.
T H-L not having a turbo, you actually have to rev it higher. I have a 2011 Renault Clio RS 2.0 200cp non turbo which goes to 7500rpm
The 1.5 revs lower at 70mph than the 1.33 which I have, so unless they have changed the gear ratios the engine size must have something to do with it. There are TH-cam clips as proof of RPM.
Simon George they have changed the gear ratios since it has 111 hp 12 more than the 1.33 wich gives a bit more flexibility and longer gear ratios so it can rev less and be more economical

I drive a Yaris 2018 1.5 and I love it.
I'm no car snob but the reliability of Toyota made me buy it.
I had to get the 1.5 as most days I drive 50 miles of motorway on my way to work.
bonydox9 Can I ask, is it good on the motorway as regards performance at the speed limit, and capability on gradients ? I had a 2016 plate 1.33 model and although very nice to drive, it struggled on the motorway and hills. Engine had to work far too hard for my liking, and if it was windy, no chance getting more than 60mph out of it. Can you let me know your thoughts please, thanks.
My 1.5 petrol Yaris is very good for motorway driving and handles inclines very well.
My only niggle with it is that there isn't much omph when you change from 5th - 6th gear.

I've owned 2 (2006) Prius models and distinctly remember that it required about 3 months for the hybrid battery pack to properly "season" or "break-in" for maximum output. Since then, both cars deliver between 48 and 51 miles per gallon in mixed driving. Add to this the fact that one also needs to learn how to properly drive a hybrid to attain better milage if not familiar "hyper-mile" techniques. All this takes a bit of time :)
I get good results in a regular Prius, but never in Yaris.

From the back it looks like a (smaller ) Nissan Pulsar. The pre-facelift model wasnt an example of stability in high speeds with strong wind .
Great review, and interesting observations on globalisation - spot on. I'm not convinced by the external design, the interior or the spurious claims about the hyrbrid power train. Any decent small engine carefully driven will yield similar economy - I get similar figures to the Yaris with my 13 year old Panda. I'm more likely to replace my aged Fiat with a Honda Jazz, I'm afraid. Sorry Toyota.

I prefer na engines because they have a more linear power delivery, they're often more keen to rev, they're less complex so they're likely to be more reliable, and it's easier to achieve the claimed fuel economy figures than in a turbo.

Truth being told, the Toyota 1.2L 8NR-FTS Direct Injection Turbocharged engine in reality proved to be less fuel efficient than the earlier 1.6L 1ZR-FAE MPI naturally aspirated engine. There is an damocles sword looming above downsizing engines, since they all emit massive amounts of particles which means they require particle filters soon.
The new 1.5L 2NR-FKE makes use of Toyotas latest technology (VVT-iE = free switching between Otto and Atkinson cycle) plus has no issue with particle emissions as MPI NA engine.

The work culture for bigger engines is just better, that's why people like to buy bigger engines. It's easier to balance the engine. Less vibrations, less noise.
my old comute of 38km was aprox. 5.0, 4.8 on a good day, 3.9 on one special occasion - but done with a 2009 xp9 1.3l manual - no hybrid. each time i get one as loaner i try to get even near the 5.0, forget it..... not even in eco mode...
I like it. Looks good. Just don't like the black roof. Sounds very quiet inside - on the video. Would want a metallic maroon colour.
Like the led daytime running headline design but overall the car looks "top heavy"

The VW TSI problems are not so old. For the B class (fabia/rapid/polo) they solved the 1.2 TSI problems only in 2015 when they upgraded the engines to euro 6.

Reliability. That's why the na engine is preferred. Those engines last forever.

That's true but it's also true that they lag a lot on new technologies like mazda and honda, they just don't want to get unstuck..that is dangerous for them
I have the 1.33 yaris, a year old and the power is fine for me as we do have speed limits :) and less to go wrong without a turbo. Ive had both types of engines with and without turbos, but i find NA engines enjoyable because you just get used to the power curve, using the gears, and the yaris engine seems a strong unit.
Marek Drives So about the engine question you made in the video. I have done multiple times this conversation "when it is about economy cars would you rather have a lower cc (1.200cc) turbocharged engine or a normal cc (1.500cc) that is naturally aspirated? People see turbo as something new and always think because of the turbo the engine will be less reliable because it is kind of "pushed" all the time. So there you have it, people prefer N/A because they think it is more reliable.
Trian Jim トライアン thats why I like modern Subarus. The XV is my favourite car, and it makes me laugh when people say the 1.6 and 2 litre NA boxer engines are not powerful enough. Its not a sports car and 112 or 152 bhp is more than capable for normal driving.

Hello. I'm looking for a hatchback compact, fuel efficient car between $14000-$18000. Out of the 2017 vehicles, which one do you think is a better buy: Nissan Versa, Nissan Micra, Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi Mirage, Mazda 3?
have you ever driven the older 1.33 vvt-i engine in the previous yaris? if so, how do they compare? can you really feel the extra CC and the 10 extra bhp in this 1.5 ?

The 1.5 is noticeably more powerful.
how much harder or more expensive (real cost, not cost to consumer) would it be to make with a plug-in option? i can't really see the point of hybrids unless you have the option do do some journeys battery only.
The point is to save most of the energy usually wasted by friction braking by charging the traction battery instead.
You then get an Automatic car which gives good fuel consumption (aided by the Atkinson Cycle petrol engine).
Agree that plugin is better but there's probably no room for a bigger battery in the Yaris.
If you can live lwith its looks pls buy one. Its very reliable as this generation is 8 yrs old. You will hate it but it's good for you, like eating your veggies.

I bought a 2018 yaris with the 1.5lt engine, the service manual calls for 0w-20 weight oil but here in Greece, the dealership says to use 5w-30 because of the local temperature, strange that Toyota has no saying in this matter!
dont listen to your dealership, just follow your manual if you dont want to mess up your car

I don't know a supermini I could really recommend. They are all either disappointing or expensive. Or both.

So would you say that this new 1.5 is that much better than the older 1.33 that the gap beetwen it and 1.2 turbo is shrinked now?
As far as I can tell it feels neither torquey, nor powerful. The old 1.33 was actually quiet fun, when you pushed it. This one feels strained. It's kind of like with VW moving from 1.4 TSI (which was brilliant) to 1.5 TSI, which doesn't seem to do anything. I suspect it's got to do with these new emissions regulations. On paper it may have more power, but it doesn't feel like it.

Marek Drives interesting viewpoint. I had the 1.33 new, about three years ago and that felt strained when pushed, and was also lacking on the motorway and although could do the limit easy, lack of power meant the 6th gear was useless for long gradients, had to change down. Should have been just a five speed box.
What engine is the 1.5? Same 20 years old trusted 1NZ? Is it the same on hybrid, as it was until this facelift?

Read them all, there is no specific discussion if it's a 1NZ-FE, or a variant of it. What is exactly it's designation?
Btw, if the hybrid still uses the same drivetrain as Prius II, I have to mention that it was developed in fact for Prius I, in '97, and than upgraded in the 2000 facelift, and further improved in '03 with gen II, but is basically the same drivetrain as it was first launched in '97. Of course, there are some tweaks here and there with each gen, for sure better and more efficient electric motors, but it's the same shortblock, very similar overhead, and mostly the same configuration for gearbox and electric motors.
Hybrid has the 2nd gen Prius powertrain.
Euro spec 1.5 NA has a new engine.
US spec 1.5 NA is a Mazda Skyactiv, as it's a badged Mazda2 in the US.
does this engine have a DPF in order to reach Euro 6 emissions?
AFAIR this was released before GPF (Gasoline not Diesel) was necessary to meet the emissions limits.
btw the new petrol engines without turbo are very economical. I have rav4 2017 , AWD 2l valvematic petrol engine, and for such car returns average 6-8 l/100km depending on outside temp, air cond, etc... Even I have reaches ave. 5.2 l/100km driving with 60-80km/h (hot engine) for 20min with no traffic. So... I would go fir yaris 1.5 for sure! hybrid is only for heavy traffic

Martindyna I’m afraid it doesn’t. The engine that this car has is called a hybrid engine. At least it is what TOYOTA calls it anyway. I can understand why my mum would not mention the hybrid element and call it “a petrol engine”, but from a professional blogger I expect nothing but 100% accuracy 😉

What is worth remembering is that 100% of the energy to propel the car comes from the fuel tank, however the Hybrid system saves the energy usually wasted by friction braking to the traction battery (for later use in accelerating the car) and allows the super efficient petrol engine to operate at more optimum speeds.
i think japanese pushed for 1.5 because of reliability? turbo in 1.2 might ruin their reputation of reliability...i dont know i am just guessing. they do have the 1.2 turbo in the auris so not having it in yaris is weird.
Toyota made a deal with Mazda, which give them access to Mazdas Skyactive technology. This is Toyotas first Skyactive engine, although I am not sure, if this simply is the 1,5 from the Mazda 2, Mazda 3 and Mazda MX-5, or if its a similar engine but developed by Toyota.
As for the 1,2 turbo, it offer more torque. But a turbo add at least 1.000 EUR to the production cost of an engine, and fuel consumption of the 1,2 turbo is higher in real world driving. These two things combined make the 1,5 NA a better choise for a small budget car like the Yaris.
I dont think it has anything to do with reliability, since Toyota use the 1,2 turbo in their new C-HR, which is a kind of halo car for the brand. And the last thing a carmaker would want to do is to use unreliable parts in a product, which is intended to move the entire brand more upmarket.
+fundiver198 The deal you're talking about is related to the US market, where Mazda2 (Demio) is also sold as Yaris iA. That's a different engine to the one we have in Europe. This 1.5 is Toyota's own doing.
Ok but its still high skyactive technology (high compression ratio), as I understand it. The other part of the deal is, Mazda can use Toyotas hybrid technology.
fundiver198 makes sense the part about cost cutting. na is cheaper to produce and that especially matters in this class of cars. not sure what upmarket you talking about when they have lexus, just as vw will never be audi.
The VW brand itself is also more upmarket than for example Toyota. And like most other carmakers, Toyota like to move upmarket, because thats the way to higher profits. The new Peugoet 3008 is another example of the same.

The american yaris sedan is not a yaris at all. It's not even a toyota, it's a rebadged Mazda 2. It shares absolutely nothing with the Yaris hatchback. It used to be called the scion ia, but when Toyota decided to discontinue the Scion name, they just rebranded it as a Toyota yaris sedan instead, despite the sedan having nothing in common with the hatch. Platform, engine, transmission, suspension, infotainment is all Mazda. Also, Mazda makes some of the nicest manual transmissions out there, so you might want to test drive the manual Yaris sedan before going for the automatic.
i got the ia in automatic. after a few months i still love it. manual is tiring... the auto have manual and sport mode.
Unless you like to frequently drive fast on the motorway buy the 1.5 L Hybrid, they're always automatic and get great mileage around town.

I am confused. You compare the 1.5 to the 1.33 , but the old hybrid was also a 1.5? Is this car the hybrid or not?
I know, it is confusing. Let me explain:
Yaris Hybrid has a 1.5 L hybrid powertrain (probably from the 2nd gen Prius)
Yaris 2017 1.5 has a new 1.5 petrol engine, which replaces the 1.33, but has nothing to do with the hybrid
Yaris iA (US spec) 1.5 probably has Mazda 1.5 Skyactiv G engine
That's the same powertrain. You had the 2nd gen Prius as well - the one all celebrities had at some stage.

Adrian Briciu Can't comment on how the Yaris drives, but the 2 is a newer design -and more attractive design in my opinion, and is great to drive. Both very good cars though.

You're probably referring to the footage where the car is going over small bridges. It's a city centre district, where car traffic is restricted, and pedestrians have the right of way.
I don't understand why Toyota won't place 6 manual trans with this 1.5 engine ? Because this set-up has been together for 25 years already, just place 6 manual and people are happy saving more with sporty experience, plus they have made money with this for a long time.

I thhink it is one of most reliable small city cars. However in my country Egypt, its price is high and you can easily add an extra money to gey the Toyota Corolla!!! Also, it comes with no city safety autobraking or that stuff!!!

ummm... I like it but I don't like the bi-tone paintjob. IMO bi-tone would look better without the black A-pillars (or just paint the roof black).
I would prefer a 1.2 turbo to a 1.5 normally aspirated; the small turbo in the Fiesta works well. Not sure why Toyota took this route - perhaps real-world fuel consumption as you said. However, the 1.2 turbo should be an option in sportier models.

Why does the Yaris hybrid consume more fuel than the Prius? That's weird.
Plus, I wouldn't mind a 1.2 l engine, but it should have 3 cylinders instead of 4. Such a small displacement is not suitable for 4 cylinders.

I don't know about others, but when I'm test driving a car, I'm not worrying about the fuel consumption. I will floor it and test the acceleration, a lot. I don't mean that I'm driving reckless, but come on, is there someone test driving a car like it's their own? Obviously that will increase the fuel consumption. I just think that it's not a relevant comparison to the actual fuel consumption. Maybe we have someone here who has this Yaris as their daily driver.
First of all, this is a first drive during a launch event in a foreign (for me at least) country. The last time I tried to put my foot down in the Netherlands it cost me 60 euro going 4 km/h over the speed limit :)
As far as real driving conditions are concerned, I think my test drives in Poland are a good approximation for a relatively dynamic driver. In Poland we tend to drive 30-50 percent over the limit (and that's absolutely normal), many drive aggressively, and accelerate/brake needlessly. I'm trying to be somewhere in the middle keeping as close to eco driving principles as possible under Polish conditions. So I will drive with the same speed as everyone else, but at the same time try to coast, plan ahead, etc. This gives me relatively reliable and consistent fuel economy data. Not very scientific, but good enough approximation of real life conditions.
This is a city car, so it won't go fast whether I floor it or not. If it was a hot hatch version, I would definitely try and test its dynamic capabilities more thoroughly.
City driving aggressively 6L. City normal driving 4.8L. City efficient driving 3.8L.
I don't like the look of the gear shifter on these cars, it looks very 1970s like the T bar shifter on an old Ford Automatic..
Why couldn't this car have been given the same `fly by wire' joystick shifter as in the Prius & Auris?

The over all car is nice,but the rear lights are pooo whay make them bigger then the car its self,best looking yaris was the mark 2.the gear shifter is ugly looks like they found that in a car breakers yard lol.
Test drove today, with manual 1.5 engine, compare to my VW, its clutch is truly rubbish, steering feeling is awful too, ford fiesta is much better gear shift and good steering. disappointed, will go to VW polo this Saturday for new polo.

AC in new cars doesn't spent gas almost at all.
Looks like a smaller Prius, which is a terrible thing to look like lol. I'd stick with a Mazda 2 or VW Lupo

I like the design, but would rather take the new Swift with the turbo engine. It's great to have that extra torque when driving up the hill. Well and those Hybrid numbers are ridiculous. It always seemed Toyota wants you to drive very specifically to achieve good consumption. I still don't get why people are buying them.

Suzuki Swift is a great handling car, but the ride quality is poor. I had a 2019 model the other week and it just wouldnt settle on the motorway, whereas the Yaris suspension is relaxing.
As a Dutch driver, I have to agree, they drive horribly!

I think it's to small already, with an sub 300 liter boot capacity it's way smaller then the new SEAT Ibiza witch has 355 litres! I also think the design is not the best again much more impressed by the Ibiza!
Maybe you're taking about Ibiza station wagon. Ibiza hatchback has 292 litres.
The Ibiza has not even been released for sale yet, and this is essentially still a model from 2011, even though its had two facelifts now. So its hardly surpricing, if the Ibiza will have an edge in some areas.
That being said boot capacity is hardly the most important aspect of a car in this segment. With that mentality we end up in a situation, where the best "small car" has a boot of 1.800 liters. In which case its no longer a small car but a van.....
I know that! I trust mutch more the Japanese manufacturer's, I had a really good experience with the Honda Jazz but not a nice one with an Avensis, I trust sometimes is also luck, but at least you need to like the design....

Yaris hybrid gets 4L/100km without any problems in the city. This guy obviously does not own a hybrid and does not know how to drive it. By the way the heavier the traffic the lower the consumption is.
I get 3.5 in the new Prius without a problem. I just can't seem to tame the Yaris :)
Well if your "city" traffic includes driving with more than 60km/h this maybe the case. Prius is much more efficient on higher speeds. Anyway, I would never go back to non-hybrid - next will be probably electric.
obviously, its funny to watch this clown destroy MPG of a hybrid and whine it sucks.. I drive it normally, and in a city its gets me 3.3 L/100km.. amazing, use electric power soo much, its relaxing.. if i do some highway driving then my mpg goes to 4.4-4.6 L/100km.. all in all this is amazing car..

As some one who drives a Toyota Yaris himself, to anyone who's interested in this car: whatever you do, do not go for the Hybrid!
The numbers for fuel economy Toyota claims are a lie! you'll never get even close to 3.6L/100km, you'll be lucky if you drive less then 5L/100Km!
I wouldn't be making a fuzz about it, if the Yaris had at least a descent sized fuel tank; it doesn't! The tank only holds 36 liters!

Well there are no better hybrids on the market than those made by Toyota. But the technology is only really benefitial, if you drive a lot in dense city trafic. If you mostly drive long trips on open roads, you are better off with a diesel. Personally I am not a big believer in hybrids. I would rather go all in and go completely electric.
+fundiver198 4 generation Prius is much better on fuel economy, but Yaris still has the 2 generation Prius technology.
Japanese tends to underestimate their millage.
Like the 1NZFE 1.5 I have which is rated for 7.32L/100km gets on average 6.4L/100km around city doing a mix of local and motorway driving; and on long road trips including 4 adults, hills etc... gets 5.5L/100km.
NA for reliability & longevity. Personally I wouldn't trust a 14.7 billion dollar VW liar further than I could chuck its warranty.
G Rodriguez Subaru ditched the turbos, because only small customer base, so their cars are now aimed at a wider more mature audience.
