  • Creating Fish Abundance.
40% of the Earth's land surface is agricultural - either row crops or pastures. In California's Central Valley, we've lost 95% of wetlands and floodplain forests. We've effectively conquered the landscape. And the fish have suffered. The Central Valley's wild salmon are endangered, some on the verge of extinction.
But what if we could create fish abundance in this altered agricultural landscape?
That's the question CalTrout's Central Valley Senior Scientist Jacob Katz posed...and the results were amazing.
Now we’re putting that science into action. The Nigiri Project started as a mud muddle experiment in the corner of a rice field and is now shaping water management over tens of thousands of acres of the Central Valley.
The Nigiri Project shows that California's floodplains can work for both fish AND farms. This is how we achieve fish abundance on a managed landscape. These are management solutions for fish, water, and people.

This is an amazing, informative, and cogent summary of how what the Central Valley even is, how it came to be, and why its important to fix it.

It makes me happy to see the work being done to conserve or bring back what we have lost but at the same time I can't help but think of all the juvenile salmon getting swallowed up by the Stiper or pike and frequent those waters.
