Unfortunately Towa is underdeveloped. If she did get a chance to go back to the future, or even had a back story episode about growing up in the modern era it would probably help a bit. Unlike Kagome she technically doesn't fit in at all in either time, in the modern era she's this half human half demon in a world of only humans, she can't risk her abilities being seen, but in the feudal era she doesn't fit in because she's too modernized from growing up in the future. Plus we need to get more about her role as sister, see how her role as Mei's big sister and her role as Setsuna's sister parallel. We need to see her in the modern era.

I read that Towas personality is based on Rins personality. I think thats one of the problems. We saw Rin mostly as a child and her personality was still in developement so there wasnt much ground to base on.

I keep thinking, regardless of how many don't agree, the twins are based off of two of the most absolute boring, no interesting personality characters (minus the people obsessed w/ sesshomaru's character & the fact that rin's sole existence is for his "character growth" ) of inuyasha series, what do people honestly expect, that is going to be a challenge for writers

@@virallcullture8585 I agree 100%. I have always found it so difficult to understand why people idealise Sesshomaru's character so much. I do think he's a solid and interesting character, especially in battle, but beyond that he is too cold. I heard that the sequel was going have another season about his relationship with Rin, but how is this going to be? I can only imagine endless silence between the two and him bringing her presents but no actual interaction.

    • @Monty2289
      @Monty2289 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think this is probably the best point. It hit me harder than anything else about her. The dream butterffly is not being treated with any importance. Moroha doesn't care and the recieptant for getting their memories back don't care either so Towa is just kind of hanging around until the plot finds her. And tbf original Inuyasha was a lot like this. Naruku was a garbo villian because he went out of his way to alert the heroes to his presence when the reality of the situation was he was well hidden. Fuckin' hell the heroes wouldn't even have formed a band if he had simply left them alone. I digress.
It also doesn't help that Towa's emotional effort is not recprocated. And Setsuna having a lack of emotions (mostly) doesn't help but its not a full on justification. You don't see Towa being adamant about helping Setsuna, being pushy, taking hits for her, doing something for Setsuna that Setsuna didn't think she needed. The series overall is saying that Towa is barely useful outside of abilities that it just randomly gave her (after all we find out that Setsuna had to train herself to become strong).

Truth be told she seemed more interesting when she was in the Modern world and I feel like should season 2 happen, both Inuyasha and Sesshomaru should explore the modern world of today, and Kagome walking around town while feeling like a total stranger in the 2020's still feeling nostalgic memories of her home. but I mostly want to know if there are demons or half demons hiding themselves in the Reiwa era or blending in, cause they never explored this in the 90's with the original Inuyasha. but I think I'd enjoy Towa more if she hangs around with all her relatives, from her parents, her aunt and uncle etc.

    @StareachValcin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +42

For me personally, I don't hate Towa, but she is my least favorite of the three main characters. I like that Towa's kind, but she's far too naive. The biggest example of her naivete is how Towa thought she could get Setsuna's dreams back by asking Kirinmaru nicely. I'm sorry but that just makes Towa seem stupid. If the dream butterfly plays a role in Kirinmaru's plans, he's not just going to give the dreams up unless you force him to. I wouldn't compare Towa to Kagome because even Kagome knew never to hesitate when fighting against evil demons. As for her hacks abilities, at first I didn't like the fact that Towa just happened to have abilities that could help in certain situations. Then I really thought about her heritage, and the hacks abilities make sense since she's Toga's granddaughter and Sesshomaru's daughter. Toga himself was one of the strongest demons in the series, as well as Sesshomaru who also had hacks abilities, which could have been passed on to Towa. Kirinmaru himself acknowledged this. As for her inexperience compared to Setsuna and Moroha, it's understandable. Towa has actually spent most of her life in an era where everyone else is weaker than her, while Setsuna and Moroha have had to face opponents with varying degrees of strength. Towa never faced an opponent that could threaten her life until the day Setsuna and Moroha traveled to the modern era. Then when Towa returned to the feudal era, her inexperience became very apparent compared to Setsuna and Moroha. I think what really bugs me is that Towa tends to solve the situation despite her inexperience, and she barely gains experience from her situations. In other words, Towa barely learns. This is the main reason why I wanted Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha to lose sometimes, especially Towa, so that they can learn and grow. Fortunately, Kirinmaru taught them that lesson. Whether they grow from here or not is up to them. Also for the sake of her character development, I hope that Towa defeats Kirinmaru with help from Setsuna and Moroha, rather than doing it on her own. I think the most interesting thing about Towa is her personal quest to retrieve Setsuna's dreams. While Towa does want to restore Setsuna's ability to sleep, more than that it's clear that Towa wants Setsuna to remember her. It's clear that Towa wants a close positive relationship with her sister since they were separated for about 10 years (give or take 5 centuries due to time travel). During that time, Setsuna doesn't have that level of closeness that they had before, though Towa is glad when she has moments of closeness with Setsuna at all. This makes me wonder what will happen between Towa and Setsuna at end. Will they be closer if Setsuna fully regains her memories of Towa? There is also the matter of which era Towa will choose if she can return to the modern era. It is obvious that Towa will have to choose just like Kagome had to choose before. I don't think Towa is a bad character. Towa just needs character development consistent with her character. At her core, I would best describe Towa as a human girl with the powers of a demon.

Oh my God yes just please can towe have some character development cuz this constant naivete and like not learning anything is just a little annoying and makes her look stupid

I agree wholeheartedly about her inability to grow or change. We have what are supposed to be learning moments in all of the episodes, whether about the relationship for the trio, their powers, or the plot. But no one talks about or references those moments, or we don’t see anyone working against or up to those moments.
Why is Towa able to absorb demon energy her first try? Essentially, she is in the same spot as InuYasha power wise, except he actually had to work to perfect his skills and powers. He even had experience fighting higher powered demons before he got the Tessaiga. Towa just got into fist fights with humans. I really dislike how she is so over powered and doesn’t talk thru anything with anyone.

13:25 Something else that Towa had that Inuyasha didn't is community. Towa was KINDA weird in the modern era, but she had a family, she participated in competition and was rewarded for her achievements, she went to school. She had a much larger pool of knowledge and ideas to pull from than Inuyasha did in addition to the confidence that security and emotional support from being in a group. That was part of Inuyasha's character development.

EXACTLY. She is essentially in the same spot as InuYasha was, except she has no prior experience even being a half demon due to growing up in the modern era. InuYasha had to work hard to understand how to wield his weapon and powers. Multiple times. We even got episodes of him training or worrying about his powers. Towa can just absorb and cut through demon energy at will because someone conveniently told her she could at the right time.

Towa is a kind, compassionate, altruistic person who happens to be the half-demon daughter of one of the most feared and powerful demons to ever live. Naruto 🍥 had great strengths but also great faults, but he was more believable that Towa. Ichigo had a longing to protect his family, and had to be trained to become better it didn’t just magically come to him.
Almost every shounen protagonist is developed slowly defeating lower level bosses and building up their strength, but Towa hasn’t yet. She doesn’t seem to get beaten down either physically or mentally, and like it or not that is how we have gotten used to generic good shounen characters developing.

AT LEAST LET THE TRIO TALK ABOUT STUFF! I think all my issues with Towa (her inability to retain information, her shaky ethics, her ability to learn powers in the first try) stem from no one acknowledging it.
Can we at least have fireside or picnic moments where she talks about a lesson she was supposed to learn and how it’s confusing? Or about how she doesn’t think she will ever be okay killing, even if it’s a demon. Or about how she can’t believe she was able to learn a new power in one try.
Like, for the last one, you can have her discussing her ability to gain new powers so quickly, and how she is confused. The trio can even act a little nervous around her-she is this prodigy. (Setsuna had to train for her abilities. Source is ep 20). But Myoga is there and he tells her a story of Sesshomaru using the Wind Scar correctly the first time. Especially if from after this moment, she shows fear when trying new powers, but the trio reminds her of her ability, and then boom, she can do it. I would root for Towa much more.
I think these kinds of conversations and links would make it easier to flesh out the emotions, opinions and goals of our protagonists. Right now it’s the job of the audience to do all that legwork for them. We have to make assumptions about the characters feelings for their parents or their motivations instead of being shown by the characters themselves.

Hell Nah, your girl is a fucking queen, I’ll keep saying it #AllHailTowa
You pretty much nailed the ability explanation, she was a half demon stuck in the modern era and made a promise to not use her powers so when she found herself in the feudal era she was able to let loose, with "all the force of a raging fire"" that’s how I look at it. And what you said about the rainbow pearl in her eye I’m sure it does amplify her powers so the more she used it in the feudal era I’m sure that is why she gained so many powerful abilities very early on - this is kind of like common sense right? I don’t care if anybody thought she was annoying as fuck, I thought Kagome was annoying as fuck, I still think she is Jesus Christ… But that’s another story.
Towa was basically raised to be a pacifist in the modern era and she had to change her ideals in the feudal era, of course she’s going to be hesitant half the time but it’s not like she didn’t make an effort or doesn’t every single time, it honestly like her the most because she is such a bad ass and now she can be

  • @yamatonadeshiko567

Out of the three, Towa is my favorite. Sure she's a lot of things that people complain about her but guess what, people like her exist in the real world which totally refuted the Mary sue claims. I bet some people who are so critical of her were as wishy washy as her at some point in their lives and are still like her from time to time. Out of the three, I find her to be the most interesting. For now, she's someone who feels like wherever she goes, she is still the outsider, the odd one out, the different one, even if she already formed some close bonds. It was hinted when she was introduced and was kinda established in episode 19. It was hinted that she's also conflicted and fears that she may not see her adoptive family but then again if she reunites with her adoptive family I can see her getting conflicted of not seeing Setsuna anymore. Maybe that's why she appears so generic because she reacts like a lot of people out there. It's also pointless to compare her to Kagome because adapting is different for every individual. Some adapt easily and some don't.
Hesitant to kill? The only thing that didn't made sense to me was the Tokotsu episode. But really, is she still like that? Because the recent episodes didn't seem to portray it that way, at least to me, unless there's some possessed human or someone being used as a human shield who could get hurt. I am pretty sure she has no problems wanting to kill Konton and Totetsu, she just wasn't able to do it. She wanted to kill Homura for revenge and was kinda disappointed that she wasn't able to. She didn't want to kill Yotsume because she wanted some information from him but she didn't say not to hurt him either.
Other girls often rely on her power? I am pretty sure Setsuna has her own share of decent kills. Moroha has her moments too. There was even an episode that she admitted not knowing how to absorb demonic powers and it was probably out of desperation and Moroha had to instruct her what to do.
Undeserving of her power? Well she has a rainbow pearl who just did the impossible of making her travel through time lol. I won't judge this until the silver pearl finally gets stolen from her.
Overall, she's the type of person whom you will either like or not like and that's fine. But the mary sue arguments are getting old and ridiculous. I even saw one comment comparing her to Bella from Twilight which is like the most ridiculous comparison ever. Back then I would have probably disliked her but as I get older, meet more people (even psychiatric patients since I had my experience going on-duty at a psych ward when I was a student) etc, I am not surprised nor bothered by her behavior anymore. My only worries is that Yashahime will have no season 2 and the series as a whole will be a complicated mess.

To be honest, I find Towa's behavior realistic for her age. Many teenagers don't always learn quickly, usually have issues with identity, wishy washy, can be self contradicting, mess up over the same things again and again etc. I mean, even adults experience these issues, so how much more a 14 year old traumatized girl. Plus, people who experience trauma do have the tendency to be not so well-adjusted and messed up after the traumatic event. I guess I'm in the minority in not feeling her character design. I like the idea of her wearing more masculine clothing and I love her short hair. But the execution was just meh. The chunky white-on-white pants suit just doesn't do it for me. Somewhat unrelated but I also feel like at least one of the twins should have had gold eyes (maybe Setsuna since Towa got the white hair).
Character-wise she's okay. She does come off a bit naive or at least lacking depth, but I feel like just having an episode or two where she grew a bit as a person would fix that. And I actually like that she's more soft personality-wise. It goes against the stereotype that being a tom-boy means you hate feminine things or are somehow "not like other girls".
I would also like to see her not always jump the gun to defend her (totally self-sufficient and badass in her own right) sister. She's a bit over-protective and hung up on Setsuna, which, yes, makes sense because they were separated the way they were, but also just comes off a bit too overbearing.

Then growing up with Sota and being told to hide her abilities it may be a little difficult to all of a sudden be like "oh I'm free, yea I can beat up whomever I want" once she went to the past. Also, they really contrast each other and they definitely are like their parents. Towa is caring and thoughtful like Rin, Setsuna is decisive and bold, like Sesshomaru. If we just had more time to show her growth at a slower pace I think all of the problems we have would be fixed. It honestly felt like they rushed 3 seasons into 1 not allowing ANY of the characters time to reflect and grow. And I think having that time to reflect and to think about their situation rather than the plot pushing them forward all the characters would feel far better. We have 3 characters dominate 99% of the screen time and we barely know anything about them outside of their personality quirks.

I'll say this (and get ready, I have a lot to say--because I'm old and tired of the whining), I watched InuYasha back when I was in my early-20s (I'm 40 now), I only watched it back in the day on Cartoon Network because it was ahead of other programming I was more interested in, typically Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, and/or Ghost in the Shell and I'd just let it (InuYasha) run in the background, while I was either studying (when I was in college) or doing something else. The only time I really bothered to pay attention was when Sesshomaru showed up, because he and his little band of vassals were the only ones in the entire show I liked, most everyone truly annoyed the hell out of me, and yes... that includes the title character.
Understand, I was first watching the show as an adult, not as a child or teenager (which is still a child). I don't look upon the show with nostalgia, I look it as that show I watched with only a few characters I found entertaining and the rest either mildly amusing to rest being absolutely annoying (to be fair, the same stands for DBZ even though I watched the hell out of it back in the day, go fig'). Why am I watching YashaHime? Well, if you were paying attention to my prior mentions, it should be clear--Sesshomaru and his little vassals were entertaining to me, and so a show based on his daughters I thought would be fun, and so far it has been, it's been a fun watch and that's all I expected from it.
So, from here, what I have to say may be disliked and even hated by those who love the show InuYasha.
While I know many of you loved InuYasha, I'll say this--if you're complaining that Towa is "cheesy". I'm about to come off as cruel, so brace yourself. Go back and watch that damn show you loved so much. InuYasha was filled with so many mind-numbingly cheesy and overly earnest moments that were absolutely painful to watch. But for anyone who is an avid watcher of anime and is honest about the media they watch, "cheesy" moments or scenes is something to be expected in great heaps whether for good or ill in anime. I've found as I've gotten older I've been far more tolerant or even found amusement in the "cheesy" moments, which includes Towa at her apparent "cheesiest" when she was relieved that her twin sister and cousin (her only family she has in fuedal era) weren't trying to kill each other over something as petty as money... Excuse me, while I step aside for a moment to epically eyeroll at everyone whining about how that context is "cheesy". I'm sorry, every time I see these comments I just think of wannabe-jaded teens trying to come off as being unaffected by anything but trying too hard in the attempt and it's far more painful and "cheesy" to me than anything Towa says or does, because she at least has the excuse of being a fictional anime/manga character. I mean, seriously, kids.
I'm glad that several of the comments here is that she isn't a bad character, because she is not--not by a long by a long shot. I would say she is a very underwritten character. The compliant she "struggles to learn lessons" or "forgets them" makes no sense to me. Think about your own life. No seriously. Think about it. How many times have you screwed up in life repeating the same mistakes over and over again never learning the lesson you should have? Be honest, truly be honest with yourself. And now you're expecting an anime 14 year old half-demon to do it in a handful of episodes? Come on. Get over yourselves. More so, look back to InuYasha itself, and have a genuine moment of thinking how long it took--how many dozens of episodes it took for so many of those characters to get over there b.s. No seriously, remove the nostalgia glasses and take a moment. Don't give me the "but but but" excuses, nothing's getting passed the hypocrisy of the criticism. And man, is there a lot of it to go around.
The biggest issue is comparing and expecting to get the same amount of content out of a 200 episode from a 24 episode one. Like, are you serious? Are you insane? Yes, of course the characters aren't going to be as well developed because of the run time. Is it possible to develop characters in a 20+ anime than a 200+, absolutely, I'd say Cowboy Bebop's characters are leagues more developed than InuYasha's, but that's because of the format--Cowboy Bebop is a completely character driven series of vignettes and character studies with overarching revenge tale set in the background, whereas InuYasha is basically a grand epic where the primary focus is grab the MacGuffins and beat the BBEG and have character moments here and there during down times. However, the difference being InuYasha was afforded a far greater span of time in order to do this, whereas YashaHime is not being granted the same luxury, so its creators are at a much greater disadvantage. So, to hold that against the show when comparing it to its 200 episode predecessor its incredibly disingenuous and intellectually dishonest.
For the mewling that she's "Mary Sue", to be perfectly frank, that's easily the dumbest and laziest and thoughtless "criticism" a person can make. Because the term gets thrown around so much these days it's lost all meaning. On top of which the only time people really use it is in regards to characters they dislike, while excusing the same traits and valid criticisms who fit the same mold for characters they do like. It's an empty, vacant, meaningless label by this point for an over-inflated, repeatedly misused trope, and speaks far more volumes about those who said it than it does the character(s) they're applying it to.
TL;DR - Remove the nostalgia goggles, go back and watch InuYsha again, and have a truly genuine moment watching it, and you'll find in many of the episodes you'll be able to apply many of the same criticisms that are being waylaid toward YashaHime can very easily apply to InuYasha and its cast. No, Towa is not a bad character, just an underwritten one. Trying to compare 200 episode show to a 24 episode at being the same level of content is just insanely disingenuous. Towa may have her cheesy moments, but the trying to put on a cynical, jaded, too-cool-for-school routine in response to it is the real cheese and vastly more painful to see and read such commentary. Neither InuYasha nor YashaHime, I'd count as grand works, for me--far more in the case of the latter than the former, they're just fun shows to spend 25+ minutes. It's the only reason why I watch it, it's fun. No more, no less.

But maybe because I am also one of those who enjoy Inuyasha but not looking at it through rose-colored lens. I watched it first when I was a teen and I am in my 30's now. And as an adult, I can say that even adults mess up the same things over and over again. And it's also pointless to compare how Kagome adapted to how Towa adapted because they are two different people. Two people are not the same when it comes to coping and adapting etc. Some people adapt faster and some people adapt slower. That's just how it is. People in general are also bound to get inconsistent now matter how many skill you developed because people are not perfect. To be honest, maybe the reason why I prefer Towa the most amongst the three is because I think out of the three, she's the most relatable. I honestly find her even more relatable than Kagome.

I swear most people who watch any anime nowadays think if a character doesn't have major character development by episode 6 or something, that character is "bad" or "unwritten". I like this comment coming from the view of some one who was late to anime but also....one who finds it, cheesy in general. I'm 32 I saw inuyasha in my early 20's in art college due to my roommate...it was new to me so it grabbed my interest, the main characters were cute but annoying as hell, sesshomaru & his group were dry & boring as hell (can't get into the having a crush on a cartoon character thing I see common in the community of anime) I think obsession breeds this odd thought process that gets super intense on these type of cheesy child like shows, that blinds people to the actual process of the writing, & physical animation, & development of plot, character & story

@@virallcullture8585 I was in my teens, 17 to be specific, when I started watching Inuyasha. I remember watching it with my best friend and roommate and there were so many times that I decided to do other things while watching it because I got annoyed at some parts. So many times I just want to skip some episodes but I can't since my friend is so into it. I am rewatching it now and I realized that those things that I found annoying in Inuyasha are still annoying. I really like your analysis of Towa's character and I agree that most of the problems in Yashahime are related to the awkward pace. Some things happen too fast, while others take an eternity to happen. When it comes to her abilities, I disagree a little bit. Sesshoumaru might look like a total badass who does everything perfectly when he tries a new ability for the first time but he has hundreds of years of familiarity and training in sword-fighting and demon powers. Towa has some knowledge in kenjutsu at best. Sesshoumaru knew at least in theory what Tessaiga was capable of and surely was aware that his clan was capable of smelling energy flows and all. Sesshoumaru also learned from his father, while InuYasha had to learn a bunch of things and spent some good episodes trying to develop his abilities. That's what I miss. Towa spending some time learning at least a bit about her demoniac power and new techniques, something Setsuna might be able to help her with.

Where do I begin with Towa? Well, as the defacto main character of the series I think she fits the bill to a T. Is she as complex as Inuyasha who came before her or as engaging as her co-stars Moroha and Setsuna? Sadly no, but I think that just comes down to her big moment of the series coming at the start with saying goodbye to Sota in the modern era and rejoining with her sister in the feudal era. Once she re-joins Setsuna well, stick a fork in her she's done developing as a character right at episode 3. A problem if you look at it the right way, sure, but I feel as though this allows her to fall into a very natural pov support character, one who helps others on their journey rather than going on one herself. Does she still need to get stronger? Sure, but as of right now she is 100% the character she was fated to be. Besides, this is an ensemble cast, and Moroha and Setsuna more than make up for Towa's short comings.
Also, fun fact, Towa is the only one of the three leads I'm dying to cosplay. :)

I agree with you especially the final point. It’s the writing and the pacing that couldn’t keep up, the show and characters had amazing potential though. We were all rooting for them. What you said about the rainbow pearl, that one kind of confused me though because after Sesshomaru and Inuyasha fought Inuyasha’s black pearl went back into his eye but it never gave him a power boost. It just seems like an afterthought of the writers to give it/them this ability. But idk

I really feel like Towa has the most interesting premise out of the trio. She has a peaceful modern mindset and was only used to fighting thugs and bullies. I also like that she is struggling to let go of her core values despite being surrounded by death and violence. I know that it’s a point of contention with the fandom who thinks that she should have adapted immediately, but it’s nice to see her struggle with knowing that she should kill but being unable to. It’s really a character trait that we didn’t even get in the original series with Kagome who started mercilessly shooting demons down in episode two. Don’t get me wrong though, I wish we saw it more and we saw more of a progression. But I find it endearing.

Unfortunately Yashahime feels very rushed, unlike Inuyasha where they took time to let the plot and base of the story settle in. It wasn’t like when Kagome slowly became more friendly with Inuyasha (and vise versa), along with befriending Shippo, Miroku, and Sango. All of that, took one season. But in Yashahime within the first episode (ish) they’re (pretty much) all besties. And I may be a little biased towards Inuyasha, but honestly, I liked how each of the characters (in the main group along with others like Kikyo) have their traumas explored, and aren’t just plain out said in a few minutes.

I do like Towa, but I agree that she can come off as a one note character. I think it would be nice if next season, if we get one, something happens that changes challenges her character emotionally.
For example, If the twins officially meet Sesshomaru, I think it would be interesting if Setsuna becomes more drawn to her father and wants to learn from him (maybe because she learns that he was the one secretly training her or she understands why he did what he did and forgives him) whereas Towa becomes very angry and wants nothing to do with him (this could be seen as contradictory to what was said tovTreekyo in the 4th episode but I think what you say before something happens and then what you do when it actually happens can often be different and if it's done right and brought up, I think it could work).
I feel like this could really create some new, understandable, conflict between Towa and Setsuna as well as conflict that moves the story forward since Sesshomaru would be involved. This conflict could last over multiple episodes and could even split the twins up for a while. This could also lead to Towa questioning her relationship with Setsuna and her time in the Past and if she should return home to Sota and the rest of her family.
Moroha and Rin would also have to be taen into consideration for this but I think some kind of plot that targets Towa's emotions and makes her the angry/cold/unforgiving one could be cool.

I think of Towa as 1 part Miroku, 2 parts Rin, 2 parts Kagome.
Kagome could go home whenever it suited her without worrying about the moralities of killing things +1,000 years ago. Her home was only ever a few days or weeks away, and she could even plan to show up for school tests. She also didn't worry about moralities because INUYASHA was the one to kill stuff 99.888888% of the time just fine with or without her help until the rest of the group showed up.
Towa doesn't have any of that. She can't go back, even if she wanted to. She has to live in Edo era and make a living there wither she likes it or not. (For now at least)
Beating up a bunch of thugs is not the same as having to kill out of survival. She HAS to pull her own weight with a group of demon slayers just to have enough money to eat or pay for stuff. Her "modern pack" will run out eventually and even though she tries to reconnect with her sister, she still struggles to be okay with killing.
I am kinda tired of this silly "guess what, Towa! You can also do this power!" thing that happens. I agree that the sword is okay, but not even Inuyasha or anyone else had 3 powers by episode 10. I mean =_=
The problem is that Setsuna doesn't care if she reconnects with Towa, or finds the "Dream Butterfly" that makes her unable to sleep/dream or whatever, or try to ease Towa back into the Edo Era mentality, or really anything else. Kill, Money, Eat. That's all there really is to Setsuna. (as far as episode 10, that i'm on)
It's not Towa's fault that the plot and villains are so bland that it's basically Inuyasha Lite.
I'm fine with everyone's designs but two things: The stupid red streaks, and the fact that the twins don't really look like half demons at all. Dog ears? Pupils? Pointy ears? Fangs? Tats? Claws? Tails? NOTHING! Moroha (a quarter demon) looks more demon-like that either girls do.

She IS a bad character, but the whole series is a mess. The writing is appalling and the "story" is all over the place. None of the characters have any depth or development whatsoever, but Setsuna and Moroha are not hated because they are not completely annoying... This Mary Sue is not only annoying but she makes no sense most of the time. And you can not compare her learning skills to Sesshomaru just yet, Sesshomaru has been around for who knows how many hundreds of years... even if he is father it makes no sense that she saves the day all the time.
Inuyasha always took his time to learn new moves, and he took blows from the enemy most of the time. Stop simping for a bland character.

I feel like I‘m the only one genuinely liking her. Yes she is a bit too naiv and for some overall too nice (which is confusing to me but whatever..) but I kinda remind myself that we talk about characters who are at the age of 14 (around that right?) so I think her being awkward, not knowing being lost and trying to figure things out is real??? Most people are like this at that age, aren‘t we???? Me for sure. So as a 21 years old now I really have a lot of laughs whenever she is just simply she .... kinda reminds me of me at 14-17 trying to figure out things. Yes she seems ordinary, also thankful for that. We have three different girls. I think that reflects and is authentic to the real world. Can‘t imagine watching a show where every female is written similarly or have the same traits right?? One thing for me that I would like to point out is, that the twins are interesting. Towa is what Setsuna needs. Setsuna is what Towa needs. I feel like their personality complements each other as twins. I notice that they trying to allude to that bond most twins have where they , yes are amazing on their own, still are better, kick butts and are more powerful together. One is great but both is the best. I like Towa, she isn‘t „boring“ or „bland“ at all to me, maybe other people don‘t see what I see in her. Anyway I‘m happy to see where all three of them will be by the end of the show (development wise), cause we haven‘t seen everything of them yet. :)

    I think a little differently.
    1) She represents the wise child of the house who is smiling sweetly all the time. She has no real personality, she is only an image of the model child. "Cheesy", I agree. "Won't kill", no it's very good that she doesn't want to kill. "Boring", yes a little. "Mary Sue", I don't think so, because "Mary Sue" has a big definition that doesn't fit Towa.
"Defy Gender Norms": Personally, that's not what I'm looking for, but she's a very kid girl, only the clothes turn her into a boy.
    2) "Hella Nice". Not at all. "Design". I don't like and prefer her human appearance at all. She has white hair with a red streak, red eyes and white clothes. The "design" is catastrophic. The red strand is charming when the hair is brown. The red strand is horrible and misplaced when the hair is white.
    3) "Abilities". She has too many abilities compared to Setsuna. And her laser sword strength comes out of nowhere. This is bad for the plausibility of the story. This prevents us from considering that it is the story of three girls.
    4) She suffers from the comparison with Moroha and Setsuna. Setsuna is very beautiful, with clothes that enhance her body, as was the case with Sango in Inu-Yasha. Moroha has a crazy charm. But, Moroha has a very rich personality, and Setsuna has a melancholy and haughty character that fascinates.
    5) Moroha is the daughter of the heroes of the series. We are asked to prefer Sesshômaru's daughters, Moroha plays the foil. It is imperative that Moroha plays a more important role.
    6) "Kagome 2.0". What ? Kagome was a very good invention from Rumiko Takahashi. She discovered love and had whims. The relationship with Inu-Yasha and Kyoko was subtle and touching.
    7) Inu-Yasha did not have a twin sister. He was the strongest because Kagome, Miroku, and Sango were humans. Towa is Setsuna's twin sister; Setsuna trained to become stronger; but, Towa is immediately stronger than Setsuna. And even if we will have an explanation, we will not accept it. We were sold twin sisters. Towa did not practice. That's all.
    8) The differences between Inu-Yasha, Setsuna, Moroha and Towa for the powers of "hanyo" look too much like scenario facilities.

It's not mainly about a bad character.. its really about a bad series. It lost the "conflicts" and "challenges" the original InuYahsa had. From the challenges brought by the Shikon Jewel and Naraku. To the personal struggles of InuYasha to get along with Kagome and get stronger. The evolution and relevance of the weapons "Tessaiga" and Tenseiga" and the inclusion of Miroku and Sango in the mix. All of these elements are fundamentally lacking in Yashahime. Its seems like it was written by a totally different writer for the anime.

Towa's character is a strange choice for a shonen protagonist, but good. A brave choice also, because she will not be relatable to many, when you dig deeper (she has that trollish quality of her father though: different people of different age groups and different cultural backgrounds will see her in different ways).
Between the two sisters, Setsuna is actually the one with more of the human heart but has suppressed it to survive. She's sensitive and good at observing people's emotions and motivations. She talks about walking her own path but deep inside she's this gentle one who caters to others' needs, especially those of Towa, and partly, Moroha. Her musical talent, by East Asian tradition, tends to suggest an inner peaceful nature.
Towa has all these nice values she has learned from the modern world, but deep inside she's a proud fighting creature. That's why she can control her demon mode. She likes to show some generosity but does not really resist fighting. It is easier for her to see her own connections with "both sides" (Setsuna, like Inuyasha, gradually leans towards the humans. That was why Setsuna considered Totetsu's human-eating behavior as disgusting). She might feel killing is a bit overboard but she will not do any soul searching for it (unlike Inuyasha with the bandits).
She's more insensitive and tends to do things on the spur of the moment, sometimes decides things too quickly based on others' suggestions (behaviors seen in Sesshomaru and Kirinmaru too. Kirin decided to fight Inuyasha after hearing Zero's story, but that does not mean he cared about the prophecy that much; Sess's more sensitive to being manipulated but he's also the type who likes to walk right into the trap and do experiments).
Setsuna (and on some level, her family in general) is Towa's hypocritical zone and her more human part, that will allow her some development later.
With her composition, if Towa had begun with one more trait of the following three: 1.patience and ability to listen and observe (like Setsuna); 2.interest in the big picture; 3.apex power level, she would only be able to be the BIg Good, like Hashirama Senju in Naruto or Teresa in Claymore.

Towa’s character is much similar to Korra from LOK. Her character development will probably be slow and painful but hopefully well worth it in the end. When Inuyasha met Kagome, he was already in the middle of a character change. We got to watch him accept those changes. Towa is starting from the top. I hope the anime doesn’t get cancelled because this will definitely take some time.

the initial dislike for Towa would not be so bad, if there were proper character development moments for her with the screen time she currently has. Using another initially disliked character, Ahsoka Tano from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars tv series, a character initially disliked for being annoying eventually became one of the most beloved characters in the franchise as by the show's third or fourth season, the audience got to see a character grow up through trials during a time of war. Towa so far seems to be missing that as while I don't think she is a bad character, I don't think she can be compared to her episode 1-3 appearance and be seen as a different person.

Comparing Towa to her dad isn't really fair either. Why? Because her dad is literally over 800 years old. I don't think he innately knew about the Wind Scar either. Chances are he's seen his father use it before he died. Either way I don't think it was hard to see why the full blooded demon of a great demon would be utterly busted after several centuries. Sesshoumaru was always strong and that could be in part not just because he's talented but because he's been around for a long time.
Inuyasha was already given the role of the big guy in the cast. He was the only 'not human' and he was a close range fighter that could take punishment if things went south. As far as Inuyasha's tool kit goes it was just as dumb as Towa's. Most of his abilities were indeed given to him. With the Tessaiga doing everything. I'm surprised cooking a hot meal and bathing Inuyasha wasn't built in features of his sword. But the series DID make a genuine effort in showing that Inuyasha had to stop relying on his father's legacy and make the weapon his own.

The difference in inuyasha getting the final hit compared to towa is that inuyasha would struggle and build up to that final hit. Most of the time it wasn’t just him alone. Many times he had Kagome at his side throwing that final hit with him, rare he also has to work with a brother he hated to defeat the enemy. Towa doesn’t have to work for her final hit. Regardless of her sisters abilities or Moroha’s knowledge, it’s always Towa that knows what to do and how to do it even though she wasn’t raised in the feudal era. Regardless of her father being sesshomaru.. being the daughter of someone doesn’t automatically give you the ability to know things you don’t know.

I would've have liked to see more of her upbringing, see how she adapted to the modern era. Basically seeing more of her struggles would have been nice for her development.

I think overall the show could’ve been great if the pacing was better, we would’ve gotten more fleshed out characters because there was so much potential to make them better. If they got rid of filler episodes and didn’t do a villain of the week we could’ve possible explored more struggles they go through and the development of them would’ve felt organic like Inuyasha.

I find her very cookie cutter and annoying. Would not call her a Mary Sue, though. That's because she is not perfect and as far as I know that is the key part of a Mary Sue definition.
    Yeah:
She is under developed- but she also has no character growth. You can't develop a character without growth and she has long surpassed the proper time to be doing that growth- they spent too much time making her learn things, then unlearn and rinse and repeat over and over again.
I really hate characters that show growth then backtrack and keep seesawing.
Development won't help unless it sticks and she changes and grows because of it.
    Also:
I don't like that she was constantly whining about what happened to separated her from Setsuna, and that it's all her fault- coming across as a victim as she does this.
Seems like she thinks every thing is about her when she CONSTANTLY says things like that.
    Annoying. And also boring.
I like Setsuna a little better and Moroha a LITTLE better than HER- but I don't really like any of the 3 of them all that much and am mainly watching to find out what the fig happened to the OG Inuyasha cast, and if the kids and their parents will reconcile.

And about the learning of abilities, Inuyasha himself started out with at least two special attacks and let's not forget they're trying to compress everything down into a 26 episode format imagine how much rage there would be if they tried to do it in 12 like most modern anime seasons

Towa needed to go through some character development.
I think the reason she doesn't want to kill is because of her adopted sister. Since she wants to return to the future, she has to look that little girl in the eye again and tell her of her adventures without lieing.
Towa just needs a chance to go wild and remember her demon blood.
I think the life or death battle could do it.
If her sister and her cousins lives are in danger and the only option is to kill the demon she probably will have to.
She could also go full demon during that fight.
But I want to hear everyone else's ideas as well.

I agree with your points, Axel. It's the pacing and the plot (contradictory story lines, and wasted plot devices/characters) that is the main problem with the show. It would have been cool if Towa used the stuff she learned from the modern era to solve problems they faced in the past. Sort of like a smart, MacGyver character, who has clever modern solutions to past problems. She could have been the smart, conscientious character: sort of like the Blossom to Moroha's Bubbles-, and Setsuna's Buttercup-like characters (I know, Powerpuff Girls reference; you can also use Charlie's Angels as character references for trios.)
Instead of having Towa struggle with the idea of killing or not killing villains, showing how she re-adapts to living in the feudal era again would have added another dimension to her character and would help people relate to her better. It would remind the viewers that "oh, yeah, she's not from here", therefore, people would be less annoyed by her perfectness in every situation except when deciding whether or not to kill the bad guy in every fight.
For example, if Towa created a contraption that helped Moroha clean Jyubei's shop, or, if she is shown doing first aid on seriously wounded people using modern technology/techniques (ex. putting pressure on a wound to help it clot faster; or, attempting first aid on a wounded demon i.e. the conjoined twins episode.) it would show she is just as useful as Moroha and Setsuna to the people in that era.
Kagome's character does this when she always brings back the gang's favorite food items from the modern era every time she goes home. She also performed first aid on Inuyasha in the series. The modern uniform isn't enough to show that a person is from a different era. For it to be believable, the audience has to also see that fact through the character's actions. I know that's what the writers were trying to do in the episode with the cellphone, but, it would have been better if Towa used her phone somehow during a fight to gain an advantage (ex. she could use the flashlight function to blind the bad guy, or use the noise to distract/misdirect the enemy, or use it as a homing beacon by playing a dog whistle so Setsuna can find her) before having the phone destroyed by the villain. Because people can relate to a broken phone, but it's harder to relate to: "oh yeah, I use my phone a lot (but you don't see it as a viewer), but now I'm going to put it away for the rest of this story."

Even though Towa was at first all that you just mentioned, but she had something she didn't a focused episode that had flashbacks to her life in the Modern Era with Kagomes' brother Sota's family and with all that she had to live with growing up with all this time ever since the forest fire. With Moroha and Setsuna learning about Towa more than what she was like according to them. And I got one question: If Setsuna got "adopted- drafted" or (whatever you called it ) with the family of Miroku and Sango among Hsui and Kohaku, what is it like with Towa that paraells with Kagome's or mainly her brother's family after all this time? I guess we'll find out soon.

  • @Aelda69
    @Aelda69 ปีที่แล้ว

    Answer: Yes.
Towa doesn't struggle throughout the entire series and everything either falls into her lap or is provided by other characters.
She goes from barely being able to fight people, to one-shotting Demons in the span of a single episode. She learns how to sense Yoki (Demon aura) in one episode, learns how to absorb Yoki in the same episode, and kills at least three of the Four Perils by herself.
She isn't affected by the New Moon weakness. Even while in her human form, she is still unaffected by the loss of power, and even survived being struck by a Half-Demon after sleeping most of the episode away.
She "learns" how to use the Dragon Strike within seconds, and even masters it to the point of "improving on it" with the "Twin-Headed Dragon Strike" in the span of an episode.
She achieved a SS3-esque form and controlled her Demon form with little to no issue at all, then proceeded to summon Meido and bust a freakin' moon ultra-casually.
With less than ten years of sword training, and without any in-the-field experience, was able to adapt to and/or match Kirinmaru; A Demon God with thousands of years of battle and swordfighting experience, to the point that she was able to harm him in her first outing (with a replica sword no less).
She then masters the Tenseiga first try, matching the power of Sesshomaru, who scales above Kirinmaru, which she shouldn't be able to do since she is a Half-Demon.
She later absorbs the power of the Yōreisei, which scales even above Sesshomaru *AND* Kirinmaru simultaneously.
She is only injured once throughout the entire series and it was self-inflicted while trying to stop Setsuna.
She is a Mary Sue and this is not up for debate.

  • @inutaisho94
    @inutaisho94 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Towa is totally not a Mary Sue. She's still hella weak, superior to humans and some demons but nothing compared to her father or Kirinmaru. The Inuyasha enemies would have been too much for her atm. She's just a undeveloped character that needs a few more conflicts and lessons whether that takes place in modern/fuedal era to really get a grasp of her strengths. This is only the first season so let's not judge Towa for her lack of skills.

I completely disagree, in the freaking modern era if a demon/person tried to kill my sister, in front of me and is also trying to kill me, I would very easily kill them with whatever means I had with zero hesitation, as would most. Let alone if we were in ancient times! And we are not half demons who thrive in combat

  • @Peachiikkuma

I guess my major issue w the characters, esp towa, is their character development or designated episodes dont really include much inner monologue and strife. They seem constantly fine and dont think if much conflict other than "oh nooo setsuna needs to dream again! Must help my sister!!" But when they literally JUST MET THEIR FATHER OUT OF NO WHERE they had zero conflicted feelings. All they showed was like "oh whos that guy. OH NO SETSUNAS DREAMS". i thought kagome had a lack of personality until much later in the anime besides getting mad alot before but towas is next level. Her only personality trait is being a sister. Setsuna has a similar demon like personality to sesshoumaru of "who gives a shit" sesshoumaru clearly cared for pride in being a powerful demon and his fathers honor and gifts. And would be pissed at inuyasha for being pinned to a tree. Inuyasha characters had multiple levels built into them from just a couple of episodes they were in. Where yashahime characters are like a kid show w a bad guy of the day. Towa just doesn't really.... think or even feel much besides 2 things.
