I have a trachycarpus fortunei they're great palms to grow in the UK. Mines in the back garden and growing well! I must of purchased it about roughly 6 years ago. It was in a 1 litre pot and barely 4 inches tall at the time! ... it's probably close to 7ft now!... I've just recently purchased a pair of yucca gloriosa plants, I know they're not palms, but I liked the look and they give that tropical look... Could you please let me know if they're cold tolerant?.. Thanks.
Hi Rob, amd thanks for getting in touch. Yucca gloriosa is very cold hardy, you should have no problems with that. Some say it will take -20 Celsius! Simon
@@walkingtalkinggardeners It can only theoretically tolerate -20°C if it is lucky in the most ideal extreme circumstances, with no wind and low humidity. In reality, -10°C would be the cutoff point in the british climate.
Mmmm, the RHS have trialled this plant at Wisley and they say -15 Celsius. Plus, they also grow it in the Botanic Gardens in Iceland. So yes, it will take -10 Celsius with no risk, but I'm confident it will take colder.
@@walkingtalkinggardeners In the winter months they cover it with the white sheet from november to april i believe, just like with their trachycarpus fortunei as well. Funny you mention it, I was there last month!!
Indeed there are including, I believe, the magnificent Bismakia nobilis, which I will be able to confirm later on in the year. Videos on Tresco Abbey gardens will follow!
Thanks. I came very close to buying a £50 Washingtonian yesterday, maybe I’ll go back a check which variety it is. We’re a bit cold here in the depths of Bedfordshire !
Hi Kate and thanks gor getting in touch. Yes, I would definitely avoid buying robustor as it's not handy enough. One bad winter and it will be finished if you do find filifera I would still provide a protection of fleece over winter while it is still young. Simon
My local B&M had them in at the weekend at £50 each maybe a good 41/2 foot or so with quite a stout trunk. In my experience they put on good growth especially in late summer unfortunately always lost them in winter unless u get a really mild one! I'm on West Coast of Scotland, can always find them here along with phoenix canariensis, but definitely not worth the hassle! 🏝
So beautiful
Indeed, it's surprising just how many great palms can grow here in the UK. It just depends on how much you can budget for them. Simon
Greetings From Ireland, Very interesting video, I know as much about palm trees as the man on the moon.
They are pretty much all the same. Full sun, moist but free draining soil. Simon
Yup, Down in Devon. Torquay Area.
Indeed. Simon

Yes. There are palm trees in the Scilly Islands.

Cordaline or Torbay palm
A fantastic plant but unfortunately a true palm. Simon
