You know how every new Ghost song is disliked then loved a few days later? I’ve got a theory on it. Ghost doesn’t have a specific “sound” every album Tobias tries a variety of new things and ideas that don’t match previous material. People can’t have expectations for what an album will sound like because it will NEVER be anything like what you’ve heard already. Once you break that mental barrier, the songs are dope. Kaisarion is amazing though.

    • @IRanOutOfPhrases
      @IRanOutOfPhrases 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Fully agree, I've been saying the same thing as well. Their sound is very diverse. The same band (guy?) that made He Is also made Year Zero also made Dance Macabre. Now, this song definitely took a moment from me as I didn't quite get it at first, but now I can't imagine the album without it, lol
And while the lyrics are certainly shlocky, it's definitely a deliberate choice as it feeds into the true meaning of the song which makes it work.
But yeah, all this to say, another favorite artist of mine is Neil Young. And that's another dude who doesn't give a crap when it comes to what he's supposed to sound like. I see a lot of Young in Forge. They make the song they want to make it and don't care to stray outside their comfort zone.
And the big lesson to learn with Young is that he definitely made some BAD albums. But without those, you probably don't get the greatness that follows them later. Now I like Twenties, but if its not your cup of tea, don't worry. As long as he can continue to stay creative and always be willing to try new things, that should be embraced because he'll get back to hitting your preferences soon enough.

Definitely had the exact same reaction and expectations after the previous album's singles and then these ones. I don't know what it is about this song and Hunter's Moon/Call Me Little Sunshine, but even though they felt so flat at first, they kept getting stuck in my head and I've grown to love them. It's such an unusual experience for me and music, especially comparing them to songs like Square Hammer, Dance Macabre, Ritual, Mary on a Cross just to name a few being my absolute favorites right out of the gate. But those songs have poppy chord progressions so it makes sense that they hooked us immediately.
Even songs like Cirice, I actually hated for the longest time. But then Call Me Little Sunshine grew on me and wouldn't you know it, so did Cirice after I gave it another chance. I'm going into this album fully expecting to find the entire thing mediocre at best and disappointed with the lack of catchy songs, but eventually growing to love it. If a song like Twenties went from "wtf is this" to something I can't stop listening to in just a few days, then I'm really looking forward to the rest of the album.

If you can't see the man's vision it's hard to jive with any song. I've been listening to them since 2012. I can say this change needed to happen. Some just will never understand others want the same old stuff. That's not what Ghost and or Tobias are about.

I have been on board up until now, and just because I don't like the singles or perhaps the album doesn't mean I stop liking the band or what they will deliver in the future. Each record, each song, received an independent opinion, and I am not about seeing the vision of the artist in their art, since that is an impossible proposition. I rather try to find my vision of it within it. I am not finding it here.

I have to say to you guys I love watching your reactions. I DID NOT like this album when I first heard this. And holy shit now after about 3 times listening to this- everything- and I mean EVERYTHING- has changed. I don’t know what it is about Ghost as this seems to happen with a lot of their albums with me. Keep in mind that I am 51 years old and pretty much listen to only extreme/black/death/80’s thrash/ speed metal……and Ghost. For what it is worth my wife (who is a Zumba and fitness instructor) loves Ghost, and I catch my 16 year old son who listens to rap singing “tis the night of the witch” (stand by him) and other songs by ghost too. My wife actually uses dance mcabre (I know i spelled that wrong lol) in some of the fitness classes she teaches. Even her SENIOR classes live that song. We are talking people in their 60’s/70”s!!!Guys, give this album some time. Don’t force listening to it, just wait until you are in a “ghost” type of mood and then listen to it. This morning on the way to work I listened to 1349, carpathian forest, old Bathory, drawn and quartered (all black/death metal), and then Ghost. Go figure. Love your channel and reviews. I know you mentioned you were concerned about this album. So was I- BIGTIME concerned. Give this album a chance. It’s fucking awesome!!!!!!

I have never encountered a band like Ghost. I always have a "meh" feeling when I first listen to their stuff but for some reason when I listen to it repeatedly, it gets ingrained in my head like it was my damn molecules. Every album is different and I have like them all. Prequelle was a little bit of a stumble, but I think Impera absolutely slapped. This will be a great live song. Lots of potential for crowd interaction. Ghost nutted their Mummy Dust on us so now maybe they'll rain down twenty dollar bills (hahaha).

  • @therealmagineer

Didn't really get the Willy Wonka comparison either, probably something subliminal from the "rulah/moolah" rhyme scheme. ;-)
It does have some serious Bert Brecht/Kurt Weill vibes, though. Partly because it refers back to the roaring Twenties 100 years ago, but also this kind of very in your face agitprop/theatrical phrasing. With a less heavy instrumentation, this could have easily sat in the middle of their Threepenny Opera, full of political and social commentary, packaged in poisoned lyrics. Yes, I think that's what it reminded me most of. And I can seee that, if you don't know the music and that very special (European and German) decade in history, that you feel kinda left alone with the song. A decidedly European approach to music here.

It's not a bad song but also not a good song... My first thought is that the main riff sounds like the main riff of "through the never" by metallica. My second thought is that when they do that high pitch voice it's like a bad parody of king diamond, and I can say the song could be a parody of a king diamond song or mercyful fate. Sounds like heavy metal for kids, and a kid would be like.. WTF IS THIS?!?! wearing a slayer t-shirt.

I like this song ..it's different but great..I kinda agree with the songs released so far..good but not great based on these alone I would be concerned but I think the first two singles are the weakest..and this the odd one out..if the remaining 5 songs are amazing the album can still be amazing there's still hope

I have to agree with A&P-REACTS. Sounds totally like Willy Wonka music. 😊

I agree this is a weird Willy Wonka track. One of Ghost's worst in my opinion. It's weird, since they also made one of their best songs ever in Spillways. Please react to that one!

Sounds campy, corny and disjointed. The concept is as interesting as a root canal. The vocals didn’t impress in the slightest. I was about to dance the Macarena to this…

Totally disagree with this reaction. You guys are way off base! Ghost is all about being unique yes this song has that musical vibe but it’s one song on the album. The whole album isn’t a musical. lol That’s why I like Ghost they do different things. Granted I’ve already heard the whole album and you only heard this one song. Also the guitarist kicks ass throughout this song and the entire album. He’s masked so you don’t know who it is but the guitarist is top notch! This album and even this song rocks! Different and like a musical true but the theatrics could be epic at a live show and that guitar solo? Damn!
