  • The English subjunctive is a special, relatively rare verb form that expresses something desired or imagined. We use the subjunctive mainly when talking about events that are not certain to happen. For example, we use the subjunctive when talking about events that somebody: wants to happen.

I wonder why some people wrote "finish" is the correct answer. Finish is wrong. However, I think "finishes" and "finished" can be both correct depending on whether you are talking about a present or future action (finishes) or expressing a hope related to a past event (finished).

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the quiz question. I totally understand where you're coming from. The question about completing homework is indeed tricky, and your point about the various nuances in tenses is valid.
In this specific context, we aimed to capture the sense of expressing a hope related to a future event, which is why "finishes" was selected as the correct answer. However, your interpretation about the past event and expressing hope with "finished" is also reasonable. Language can be quite nuanced, and context plays a significant role in determining the most appropriate choice.
It's great to see different perspectives and discussions about language intricacies. Thanks for contributing to the conversation! If you have any more insights or questions about language usage, feel free to share them.

"I hope that he finishes his homework on time." is grammatically correct. The word "finishes" is appropriately used in the present tense to convey the action of completing his homework. The emphasis on "finishes" in the sentence indicates a specific focus on the completion of the homework within the context of expressing your hope or desire for it to be done on time.

"I hope he finishes his homework on time." is the correct sentence.
In English, verb conjugation changes based on the subject and tense. The subject "he" is third-person singular, and in the present tense, the correct form of the verb "finish" should be "finishes." This is because verbs in the present tense usually take an "-s" ending in the third-person singular (he, she, it).
"I hope he finish his homework on time." is incorrect because it uses the base form "finish" without the necessary "-es" ending for third-person singular subjects.
So, to maintain proper subject-verb agreement and correct grammar, the correct sentence is "I hope he finishes his homework on time."

But we are taking about hope(Subjunctive mood) .So as we know that in subjunctive mood ,we will use Base form of the verb(Finish)

Omg that it also what I thought. It should be the base form of verbs since we are talking about subjunctive mood. And in the rules, verbs stay in their original base form weather we used he,she,it,I,you, they, etc.

Would you please elaboratw a bit on the last example. Kind regards.

Thank you for your comment! There is actually a mistake in the last question of the quiz. The sentence "We want the windows to be washed before yesterday" is grammatically incorrect and logically impossible. "Before yesterday" refers to a time in the past, but the request to wash the windows is in the present or future. It's a contradictory statement, and the phrase "before yesterday" creates confusion in the intended meaning. A more accurate request would be to specify a future time for the window washing, such as "We want the windows to be washed by tomorrow."
Your feedback is valuable. If you have any more suggestions or questions, feel free to let us know!
