i'm sorry, but there is something that's just so profound abt how Mariah does riffs and runs. she barely oversings them, she doesn't show off, there's constantly musicality in them that she tends to make it fit into the melody, structure, and sound of the song. and the fucking flex that she can do this in basically every register of the human voice. BUT, on top of that, she did all of that while having a vocal injury for most of her life.
AGREED. MARIAH IS THE QUEEN OF MUSICALITY BECAUSE HER RIFFS AND RUNS ARE ALWAYS PRECISE AND APPROPRIATE. not just doing random runs that sounds so out of place lolll
Also mariah's live always sounds different from each other because she constantly improvise things. This is the quality that whitney and celine dont have
Of this generation Tori Kelly is the best doing riffs, the musicality is INSANE!! Mariah is untouchable, she sometimes sounds like auto tuned because of the speed of her runs but Tori Kelly is the closest one of this generation
Mariah is the Queen of agility. In every register. No one outside of classical music possesses complete agility like hers ( trills, appoggiatura, staccato) While she sings most of the time her runs are so fast and connected with the melody that they go unnoticed.
Very well said! She utilizes riffs and runs more than most vocalists (not mainly as a "ooh look what I can do"/ show stopping moment) but rather as a way of storytelling throughout her music. Her musicality is top-notch and plus her voice is naturally very pleasant, so most don't notice just how many riffs and runs she's going through. Plus we haven't even discussed her *transitions* which are unparalleled in mainstream music.
that's not true. your perspective is probably narrowed to just pop music. take a deep dive into R&B circles and you'll easily find singers with better agility than Tori Kelly who just haven't made it big.
The thing I like about Mariah is whenever she do a riff/run she don’t stop and make it obvious it just fits so perfectly in the song you may not even notice
You are absolutely right about this. Not only Tori, but many other vocalists especially of the new generation do that a lot to highlight their vocal agility but with Mariah it's literally a part of the music and complements it excellently.
1st Battle: Mariah Ofc Tori is very good and her riffs and runs are perfect, there's no doubt for that. I truly love her ability. But compare to Mariah, Mariah has more complex riffs and runs, and ,most of the time you need to slow the speed of her singing to hear the riffs and runs because they fit the melody perfectly. Plus, her musicality is on another level. Overall, tori is one of the best of this generation including jojo, while Mariah is always the queen of melismas. 2nd Battle: Christina Ariana is great, she uses her falsetto really good. But there is something that missing im Ariana's falsetto compared to Christina. I mean like Christina's tone for falsetto is very sweet and it just sound very good, I can't express it. 3rd Battle: Whitney Beyoncè is one of the best singer and has perfect technique there's no doubt. I really love her but Whitney's belt is just something else, it just woww, when you hear it you would know "That's Whitney Houston". As an example, 'And I.......... ' there are no one can sing that well other than Whitney. Ofc there are some great but when you hear Whitney's, you can actually feel it. Her depth, tone, power and more just pure perfection. She was one of the best singer of all-time, we miss you Whitney!!
Tori is better in THIS GENERATION, but no one can overcome Mariah, Because she was the one who revolutionized the story, no one has vocals as difficult as hers.
Mariah all the way. I like how she doesn't make it sound overdone, with all extra trimmings, like these new singers take a song and murder it by wanting to do runs, riffs thru out the entire song, it's just ugh!
I wish I could travel to the future just to hear what Tori Kelly would sound like in her 40s and 50s 😭 I am quite confident that her voice will still be in tact just from how well she takes care of it.
Mariah's is fully knowledge about music and vocals, her runs is very different and inhuman.Torry is closest to Mariah coz the way she control her runs and have a little bit twist which it look like inspired by mariah.🦋❤️
Why is Ariana 😢😮 in the middle in between two of the so called Greats 😅😊❤ as you guys would say I'm sorry 😔😐 but get her out she shouldn't be there put somebody else i guess lmaoo no offense just saying!!!
Although they both have gospel backgrounds, they are from totally different generations. Mariah's style was sensational and revolutionary during her time in a way that echoed throughout the world. And it inspired/challenged every other aspiring vocalist to step up their game. And they took cues from Mariah. Tori is one of them. But she existed in a time when vocalists like Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and others were already doing their own thing with their own style. And those singers also influenced Tori. If you listen closely, you can hear many influences to her style. Sometimes jumping from Christina, to Beyonce, and adding her own interpretation as well. That's why her style is recognizable. Her technique is admirable as well. But her vocals didn't blow up like the way Mariah did during her time. And even a lot of Mariah's runs in many of her songs are way too intricate to be sung by anyone but Mariah herself because of her unique vocal quality and skillfulness as well.
Tori’s vocals didn’t blow up in her time because amazing vocals are no longer a priority in today’s era of music. Tori debuted only a few years ago in 2015, a completely separate time from Beyonce, Christina and everyone else you mentioned in the early 2000s where good singing was still appreciated. If you look at it today, besides Ariana, there aren’t really that many good vocalists dominating the music scene or being big household names the same way it was in Mariah (90s) and Beyoncé’s (2000s) time. Had Tori been born a decade or two earlier, she would have been more well received by the general public I think.
@@chikoritaleaf *My point was that Tori's style was already influenced by these artists who came before her. If Tori was born a decade or two earlier, I doubt that she would have that same style or technique that she has today. Her vocals didn't blow up in today's generation (like most other vocally talented artists) because we've already had BIG vocals in the past. Some much bigger and more powerful than hers. We already have such an abundance of vocal talent that the market for powerful vocals is already saturated. These days, people want to more creativity than vocals. A lot of those talented vocalist in the past are not even as popular today as they were before because people want more creativity. Creativity in the lyrics, the videos, in the concept, etc. Today, other less talented vocalists (even those that can't sing much) get the spotlight because they are creative. They bring something new to the table. Ariana, on the other hand, still managed to grab the spotlight because, aside from being a vocal powerhouse, she is also very creative in her music. That's what Tori needs to do. If she wants to get the world's attention.
@@Otts287 Of course every singer was influenced by those before them; Mariah didn’t come out of the womb having her own style. She had her own influences. While Mariah had influenced Tori in some ways, her main influences had always been gospel singers as she has mentioned a couple times in interviews. She actually literally studied gospel singers like Crystal Lewis and Jill Scott when she was as young as 6 years old. She would still have the same style if she was born a decade earlier because her main influences pre-dates Mariah and Beyoncé’s eras. The only difference would probably be that she wouldn’t have continued guitar as her artistry because India Arie inspired her to continue learning at a time where there were hardly any female guitar players + singer-songwriters in the R&B/soul genre.
@@chikoritaleaf Dude. Open up your mind. You're stuck in the same argument. To better drive my point across, let's put vocals aside for a moment. When Mariah came out, her style NEW. It was FRESH. And people wanted MORE. Just think about Britney, Avril, Christina, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Adelle, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Ariana, Demi, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, etc... Many of them are vocal powerhouses, bit some are not. Some more successful than others. However, they all exploded when they came out. Because they took a RISK. And they brought something NEW and FRESH. That made you want to listen to them over and over and made you want be like them. And they become your icons and legends, because they have greatly influenced your life. These days, many people can SING. And I mean REALLY SING. Vocals can only get you so far. You won't fly to the top of the charts JUST BECAUSE you can sing.
Never compare Mariah's runs with someone else. The completeness of her agility and the musicality with which she inserts each run almost imperceptibly into her songs is pure art. She is the quintessential melismatic singer, the Golden Standard and anyone in this video would agree
For me: 1._Mariah carey is more creative and uses her agility in alot of areas, lows, chest, mix, head, falsetto and Whistle, Tori could be as agile as Mariah but she has more control over her falsetto than in others areas. 2._Ariana use her falsetto better and she has more control over it but Christina has the most beautifull falsetto that i've ever heard. 3._Beyoncé just better technique and Less tension, Whitney's voice is more beautifull and loud but she often has alot of tension, sometimes it sounds like shouty and become thin as she goes high. Great video, next time try to use better examples for everyone❤
@@benjaminbawa5273 ariana cant do what christina can do in falsetto and thats her past her prime what more when she was in arianas age. You really think ariana can do what christina did in auld lang sine without breaking her jaw? Then you’re just a biased fan. Cause ariana can’t compete with christinas falsetto especially the complexity of her runs/control on that register compared to arianas simple ones
@@xmantrans4846 I’m actually a Mariah/Beyoncé fan, I only type truth. I’m sorry you don’t like to hear the truth. 🤷🏻♂️ So screaming in that register is what Xtina can do better than Ariana? 💀 Sometimes, doing little is much. Let Christina unlearn to learn. Her techniques are very unhealthy. 🤷🏻♂️
Tori is a great singer, amazing vocals, range, runs etc...but Mariah is queen and paid her dues over the last 30 years....we all know who wins this hands down
Tori is absolutely amazing too but dawlinnnggg MARIAH FOR THE WIN!!! Queen of riffs and runs- I dont think she's everrr overdone it. Her improv is also just so smooth and i really like that (listen to "Lead The Way"- it's so pleasant to the ear💞). Tori is honestly great, but in some instances, she may push her talent too far and it doesn't sound very nice..NO SHADE JUST OPINON- LOVE THEM BOTH🐑💓 Next up~ Xtina honeyyy, I LOVE YOU BUT IM SORRY ARI ATE🖤 Her tone is just more angelic and she has a bit more ease with it. I STILL SEE YOU Christina!!! I think you'll have the most perfect falsetto if you just simmer a bit- let your voice flow out and maintain that control at the same time👍Anyways- ILL ALWAYS BE UR LOYAL FAN XOXO LASTLY~ no questions asked. Whitney. PERIODT. But to be honest yes Beyonce is the moment..........but Whitney has been and always will be regarded as the greatest singer of all time. Brighter than any star in the sky in my opinion. Her belts are effortless yet so intense and passionate it doesnt make sense. Thank you Whitney- for sharing your heavenly voice with us. May you rest in peace❤ Just wanted to share my thoughts- maybe even change someone's perspective? Hope so💓💓
Lol it’s clear in the video christina has a better falsetto and has more complex runs if ariana were to do that auld lang sine falsetto run she would break her jaw
tori's amazing , hands down the best singer of this generation when it comes to riffs and runs but she has no vision of love msg moments for instance, mariah's agility is unmatched and her runs are by far the most complex ones in pop/rnb music, idk why ppl still have doubts about it, ,mariah was serving impossible runs in her first year of career at the age of 20 (see vanishing snl reharsal in 1990) and kept serving impossibly complex runs for years, her runs are not just made of quick notes or scales, mariah's runs are complex not only because of the insane amount of notes that are in them but also because of her ability to switch register so flawlessly that you can't even hear the flip from chest to head voice/falsetto or even whistle register sometimes, also not to mention her musicality and how she could do an octave jump out of nowhere and make it sound pleasent and intricated
Well that's mostly what they're about and that's what most people including myself thought unless your a music technician or a vocal coach etc other than that that's all I thought they were tbh which is clearly what both Mariah and tori do on a daily basis tbh😊
@@alexandraanderson3988 I understand, many people are ill-informed about Vocal Agility. It's similar to one thinking that vocal dynamics are solely crescendos.
Mariah is human and therefore touchable. Literally a fact that's well known. If you can't accept that no singer is untouchable than there's no hope of having a productive debate about the abilities of different vocalists.
Runs and riffs: I'd say Mariah and Tori kelly had the same agillity skills in terms of speed, precision, pitch, musicallity and complexity. But there is something more in Mariah's runs. The way she construct them rlly fits the song she's singing, song genre that she's singing and also have alot of types of patterns, style or type of runs/riffs. While tori is mostly just ascending and descending (well some others were different styles tho) And also Mariah's is less show offy while also having a great complex long runs it does not seem like she's showing them off. (such as lead the way run) And mostly Mariah is comfortable in every register when doing runs and riff (well tori too) but Mariah is still more comfy. So I'm going to Mariah's Vocal agillity Falsettos: I prefer xtina's falsetto (ariana did supper rr great dahhling) but xtina's comfort in her falsetto and I think it's also more consistent and also she's more confident doing it (for me) and xtina's falsetto can be powerful and light too. Also her vibrato in that register Is also great. And her agillity in that register is much mre better compared to ariana (but ariana' s agillity in that register is also rlly great). Belting: Whitney houston ofcourse. She's besically queen of belts Beyonce's belts were rlly great but whitney's power and resonance in her belts were rlly great. And also her vibrato in the belts were always present from Tom to bottom and always smooth and healthy. Her tone and support and consistency in her belts were also great. While Beyonce is like student belter and Whitney is the teacher belter. But Beyonce belts were great it has a great smooth healthy vibrato from top to bottom. Also has a powerful belt with ease in upper belts. And also consistent. But Whitney's belt it alot more bettercomlared to Beyonce for me. (it is just my opinions dahhling)
Mind you that all the melodies and composed melisma which Mariah sings are HERS and everyone else was later inspired by her. She was inspired by Aretha, and Karen Clark Sheard
*1st Battle:* Mariah *2nd Battle:* Christina *3rd Battle:* Whitney When it comes to *Tori & Mariah's* vocal agility, Tori's riffs & runs put her in that untouchable league with that Mariah, Beyonce, Debelah Morgan, Jazmine Sullivan etc. Mariah's extraordinary ability in transitions, octave jumps plus cramming countless riffs and runs into songs in such a seamless manner, in addition to how she utilizes staccato is what puts her above Tori and in fact most vocalists in mainstream music. Let's just say, she has a more arsenal in her festive vocal agility purse. Tori has a lot of useable range; that combined with her exceptional agility & musicality, there's still a ton of untapped potential with her. *Christina Aguilera's* is more skilled in her falsetto than *Ariana Grande;* she's more consistent with it eg. quite a number of "Everyday" D6's get the best of Ariana. In addition to that, Christina is more agile in it, even at the highest parts of it. Christina is the Queen of Falsetto in mainstream music, Ariana is a resident princess of Falsetto in mainstream music. When it comes to belts, Whitney takes it. She is technically stronger than Beyonce in this area. Yeah I said it. Not even because she supports higher (some will say it's because Beyonce is a Mezzo-Soprano, apparently the verdict is still out on that). Whitney has more TA development and engagement plus she's consistently more resonant. Beyonce is definitely a technical vocalist however so is Whitney and in this area, her technique is stronger plus the bonus of the inherent characteristics of her voice amplifies the superior technical development she already has in this area.
(For the sake of others who may read this, when I use the word resonance, I am referring to “squillo”) Whitney has more TA development along with the fact that she opts to use a more pharyngeal placement as opposed to Beyoncé’s use of mask placement. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just that pharyngeal resonance is generally preferred. Wonder why this video stopped at E5 with them though. Whitney takes C5 and E5 while Beyoncé takes Eb5 but I give a tie on C# simply because Beyoncé opted for that pharyngeal placement there and it was just as resonate as Whitney’s. I find that as Beyoncé’s voice matures, she’s transitioning from mask placement and to a more pharyngeal sound which is allowing her to be more resonate. You can hear that she began to use pharyngeal placement back in 2009 while singing this very song(halo), since then, most of her belts below C#5s have been with this placement. Edit: I forgot to mention D5, I didn’t really like either of them but Whitney raising her shoulders and leaning back created tension therefore I’ll give it to Beyoncé. -Also, the verdict isn’t really out on being being a mezzo, that’s been determined already and is quite undeniable by now.
@@LiTim17 Well said, I appreciate your comment! I would give Eb5 to Beyonce based on the particular clips that were used but after th-cam.com/video/-CbOBgfIevk/w-d-xo.htmlm51s Eb5 goes to Whitney. Mind you, she doesn't use an echo for creating the effect of a larger sound (carrying over more). th-cam.com/video/-Lze7UQSBpk/w-d-xo.htmlm31s - I'm rather hearing less resonance from her these days.
@@GarageStudio7 yes, it’s often a battle between those two on this specific note. Both are beats on it, so it’s really hard to give it to either one honestly. As for hearing less resonance, I disagree, the clip you sent was really compressed, here is a raw recording th-cam.com/video/MaCHEQzeXQw/w-d-xo.html . Now, I will definitely say that during that performance she was really vulnerable and that gave room for imperfections such as her Eb5s.
I think at this standard it really is splitting hairs, most of it is going to be down to personal preference. Based on these clips alone. I think Mariah's melisma here are more creative and Tori's (to me) seem a bit more polished and have more ease to them. I think I'm gonna go with Mariah though, the level of difficulty and creativity wins it for me. Xtina wins against Ariana. They're both fantastic and it's pretty close however I think Christina is more agile in this area and is able to manipulate the dynamic better. I also think she's more creative with hers. Beyonce wins in the third round for me. Whitney is very chest heavy and to me it comes across as a bit "shouty" and loses that great tonal quality she has especially when it goes higher, whereas Beyonce is more varied in her approach (changing the balance of her mix) and generally retains brightness in her voice whilst still maintaining a great depth. These are some very close competitors and like I said before I think it's all going to come down to personal preference.
What? Whitney is the one who maintains the depth as she ascends lol, show me Beyoncé doin an F#5 with the same amount of core like Whitney did in you give good love, or a G5 with the same amount of core that she in i am changing
1° - i love queen mariah but tori slaaaay so hard. 2° Christina is a master but Ariana take my breath away. She has more control and tone . 3° Whitney... without any coments
Mariah, no question, nor a hard one. I would go with Ariana on falsetto, although I think they are close enough. When it comes to belts, noone wins Whitney, it's truly remarkable how she keeps her absolute strength and chestiness till the very highest note, I've never heard anyone other doing that so greatly, and still retaining her absolutely beautiful tone!!
She just turned 29 a few weeks ago, a couple more years and she would be in her true vocal prime and we won’t be ready for the slayage 😯 And take into account if she has kids and how pregnancy would alter her voice...
Vocal agility: Both are AMAZING but I'm going with Mimi (her runs are much more complex and her musicality is far superior to Tori's, even though Tori is creative with her runs too ❤️). Both riff just as fast as the other and both Mimi's and Tori's runs are incredibly precise. They're both almost always on key (I would say Tori is slightly better in the pitch aspect because Mariah has gone off key a couple of times when singing the Hero high note during the Daydream World Tour; she ended up hitting a flat G#5 instead of a G5... I'm not sure which night but I remember watching a video of her performing the song on tour where she went sharp) Falsetto: Overall, I prefer Ariana's. But if you look at it objectively, Christina's agility in her falsetto (and her lower register, even though low notes don't matter in this case) is far superior to Ariana's (but that first riff that Ariana did... the one in Bang Bang; she SLAYYYYED us all there 😍). Her vibrato in the register is also much better than Ariana's. However, Ariana is more comfortable in the register because her voice sits higher than Christina's and she doesn't thin out until F6 while Christina sometimes thins out above D6. Belting: C5: Whitney (I love Bey but she was clearly using a lot of reverb) C#5: Whitney D5: Tie Eb5: Whitney E5: Tie
I agree with everything you said, but Christina doesn’t thin out at the note you said. D6 is still pretty comfortable for her. In her prime, she was still very strong on G#6 and A6.
1st round: Mariah - Mariah easily takes this. Agility includes transitions, octave jumps, trills, staccatos and musicality aside from riffs/ runs and she’s superior in all those areas. 2nd round: Ariana - Ariana’s tone in this register is just so angelic especially in 6:22 where she sounds more like a flute than a human. Ease and agility in it I’d say is tie with Xtina but she wins in tone and musicality 3rd round: Whitney - a close one because Bey’s belts are also crazy good but it’s also Whitney’s strongest feat that’s just unmatched. Heavenly resonant tone, insane power and dynamics so she wins this
I'd have to say Tori is more agile. She rarely, if ever, has a bad vocal. Mariah has had some misses when singing live and has been quite shaky. She's much better than Tori is many other ways (belting, tone, maybe even melismas, but agility? No. Tori has never had a bad vocal. I prefer Ariana's falsetto - she can do more. Her rendition of Emotions alone takes the case. And Whitney's just the queen of belting. I would've even preferred to pair Beyonce and Tori up with agility. That would've been a good battle, cause these 2, especially now, never miss a note.
The thing is melisma(which is just runs and riffs) is a part of what makes up agility. Tori may slightly edge out Mariah when it comes to pitch but Mariah does more intricate and creative runs and can showcase the same speed in every register. She also has the best transitions in contemporary music. So overall Tori is not more agile, which isn’t a bad thing… she’s still the most agile vocalist of this generation and can definitely be considered in the same caliber as Mariah when it comes to agility but she is not above
@@kingjuicy3023 I definitely see where ur coming from. Mariah is exceptional. For me, I just think Tori is more consistent. Which for me, is a part of agility. Its not just doing complex riffs and runs. And agility is more than riffs and runs. Its about accuracy, consistency and healthy singing technique. MC is not always as accurate, consistent or has the most healthiest singing technique sometimes. Especially after 1998. I give Tori the edge there. MC is more agile in the studio, but Tori is more agile live. I'd put my money on Tori executing a one take vocal with less errors over MC.
Tori vs Mariah: I preferred Tori. She has much better note separation than Mariah and and although Mariahs are slightly faster and a bit longer her note separation seems to suffer just as little bit. I think that her musically is slightly better however. Ariana vs Xtina: I preferred Ariana. Now this is mostly a tonal preference which is subjective but I also think that Xtinas overall ease wasn’t as good as Ariana’s. The sound of “freeness” wasn’t as strong. Whitney vs Beyoncé: Whitney. Period.
In my opinion, First Battle! #Mariah vs #Tori: Both are INCREDIBLE songwriters, vocalists, and talented. I LOVE them BOTH sooooo much.♥️ However, l choose Mariah for the win.♥️ Second Battle! #Christina vs #Ariana: Tbh, l prefer Christina more. I LOVE her music, voice and her vocals. Better singer and has better falsetto.♥️ l like her more.♥️ l don’t like Ariana at all. (No offence!😅) Third Battle! #Beyoncè vs #Whitney: Oh, that was a hard one to choose. My first and second FAVOURITE female singers.♥️♥️♥️ however, as much as l LOVE Beyoncé, l choose Whitney, even though l LOVE her just as much.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ l LOVE them BOTH so much.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ Great video! xD ♥️
Tje scariest thing i noticed about mariah was her riff n run is well- integrated to song n part of the melody... N most of them are so subtle. Unnoticeable unless u try to sing it to her original
8:27 I’m sorry but this just doesn’t sound good to me at all… it sounds squeezed and very tiny. Almost like that of a mosquito. I get that she wants to show off her range, but in instances I personally wouldn’t do that, I’d stick to what sounds pleasing.
Mariah vs Toir: U could say either and u would be correct. Personally I think Mariahs are slightly more just different and creative. I mean both re but something about Mariah's just seems different and almost like unheard of. Like when I watch a vid on her agility all her runs are well executed, creative, and for some reason just sound so distinctive and again creative. Like she play with her voice a lot when riffing and running like she can go softer, go more fuller and powerful adding belts and stuff, g for a more piercing bird kinda sound with her whistles, or for a more bright and pretty tone with her head voice and falsetto. For musicality both again would be correct. Toris are very creative and her runs fit the song (whtv it is) very wel almost if not every time. They are well executed and just perfectly fit the rhythm, key, and vibe. Whether it be gospel, pop, rnb, or whtv other genre. mariah is the same. Her runs always fit the songs, rhythm, and vibe no matter what genre. Both can really change up their runs and adapt them to whtv the genre is like I said whether its gospel, pop, hip-hop, rnb, more ballad slow kinda feel, or anything else. Overall I will honestly just say tie (maybe tori SLIGHTLY actually). Finally speed and precision. AGAIN both would be correct. For speed Mariah can be extremely fast when she wants to and when she does well she can really RUN. Like its hard to see how many notes she actually hits sometimes cause she be going so fast. Tori is the same. She can be extremely fast (if not faster than Mariah at times). Tori is honestly more consistently fast tbh as she is like always doing very fast and quick runs while mariah CAN and HAS but not as often as Tori. She mostly alternates between fast and medium paced runs. I mean tori does as well but she is mostly faster. Precision I will just say a tie bcuz both ladies even when going hella fast always hit every single note. Overall I will say both are kidna just equal. Mariah has the edge (imo) for creativity and versatility, while tori takes speed and musicality, and they both tie in precision. I will say They are both equally great. TIE! Christina vs Ari: Now a lot of ppl consider chirstina the queen of falsetto and i get why but lets see. Personally I prefer aris tone. christinas is really good but aris is brighter and sweeter which is what i prefer.range would be either one of them. i think christina has gone higher like a g6. not sure if it was whistle or falsetto but i'll just say it was falsetto. Overall I prefer aris falsetto but either one would be correct imo. ARI (imo) Whitney vs Beyonce. Okay look Beyonce is amazing she is great especially at belting. they are powerful, full, have a nice vibrato, well sustained and supported and overall just great. but imo Whitney is one of the best belters ever (or atleast in pop/mainstream music). to me she is top 10 if not top 6 or 5. she is just amazing. the power, vibrato, ease, sustaining of the note and just her tone and the way she hits the notes is just impeccable. Especially when it comes to mid belts she is literally ONE OF THE BEST. Few can match her in the mids. even in the upper parts she still holds her own with that power and vibrato. Now this isn't to say that Beyonce is WAY behind whitney cause she ain't she still one of the best fo this gen if not one of the best in mainstream pop and music of the past few decides. but she just ain't as good as whitney.
Mariah's agility in the lower register makes no sense, definitely unsupported!!!!! Toni Braxton and Xtina have the best agility in the lower register. Great projection and tone as well. I think Tori's agility is faster, like alienish, but Mariah can do more! Especially in the mid range and whistle register. Ofc Christina has a better falsetto, angelic, and when she uses it, she always does acrobatics with it. Whitney's belting is more memorable. When the tone of the voice is quite generic, like Beyonce's, I'd not care whether she belts or not. Out of all 6, Whitney and Christina are most known for belting, the rest mix a lot... and ofc loose the power of the note.
Love Xtina but she’s not known for belting in a positive light. Also Toni Braxton is doing the same thing Mariah is when she sings lower, albeit, she has a lower voice, it’s still the same.
I think you’re not making sense and talking just based in tone. Mariah is a soprano and you are comparing her with two mezzos in the lower register? Obviously hers will be more airy, but she keeps and incredibly fast agility down there which is incredible.
No hate but the creator of the video actually didnt put many of mariahs most impressive runs. Also tori kelly is phenomenal but very likely to over sing. Technically both are amazing, the best in my humble opinion, mariah is more pleasing to the ears so I ll say mariah In falsetto, both are amazing but personal preference is christina. Belting wise, I dont know why the creator of the video chose beyonce against whitney. It would be better if they chose someone like lara fabian, sohyang or natalie Weiss against whitney. Dont get me wrong, beyonce is one of the best of her time but in terms of belting, Whitney is much much better specially if we look at both of their primes.
Lol Lara and natalie against Whitney I don't know🥴 I personally don't know natalie that well as an artist at all but she seems more like riff and run type of person and Lara seems like she has more of a softer voice don't know her personally as an artist either but these two don't seem to be like the belting type of people.🤷🏾♀️
Daydream Mariah is the perfect singer! But other than that I feel Tori Kelly takes the cake!! Coz she never misses....Mariah does infact...they're so good that just 1 lil note here n there makes all the difference. Ari and Xtina are pretty equal in terms of falsetto and Bey is technically flawless ut Whitney's voice was made to belt so I'd say: 1) Dayream Mariah > Tori > Anyother Mariah 2) Ari = Xtina ( I prefer Ari's tone so, for me it's her) 3) Whitney (Bey is there technically but Whitney was a natural)
Tori is probably more agile than Mariah tbh. But Mariah is agile in every register, and has superior musicianship. Her runs feel part of the music while you can tell Tori is trying to showcase her agility (rightfully so!) Also, thank you for using post-prime Mariah clips!
Tori, Christina, Whitney Tori is very much just barely passing but she’s got a lot of room to grow. I think Mariah’s runs are more interesting at times but Tori’s got the agility and technique down pat.
vocal agility: I like them both, they are the best representatives of how vocal agility should be used, but they use different styles that few people comment on. it's not all about speed, and it's here that things get diversed. I think Tori's faster than Mariah, but the subtle and intricate way that Mariah uses her runs in the middle of the songs make me fell in love with her. Tori uses her runs almost like the climax of her songs, always in evidence while she sings. Not wrong, it's incredible, but I prefer Mariah. falsetto: Definitely Ariana. Ariana's falsetto it's very polished, probably the best part of her voice, the tone it's incredible, like her control. Christina have a good falsetto too, but sometimes get that scratchy sound that annoys me a little. Both great, but I prefer Ariana. Belting: Both of them are "star level" in belting, and it's really hard to say who's better for me. I would say Beyoncé because I prefer the way she uses her belts in R&B songs, but they are equally perfect.
no you got it all wrong in my opinion ive never heard tori over sing and all her ad libs riffs and runs fit the melody and mood of the songs she sings every time. i recommend you dive into her live performances esp. her newer ones for example her live performance ‘in times like these’
This is my own opinion mariah is wonderful and amazing doing a particular kind of songs ( and her songs) with her riffs and runs. But tori can do anything even rap and throw your wigs away with her riffs. So I must say give them a series of songs of different genres and see who makes the most musicality of all.
Mariah vs Tori - Mariah wins of course…Tori is sooo amazing and her precision is next level but in my opinion there’s just something about Mariah’s musicality and ability to shift and transition from different registers so effortlessly…she sounds like an instrument blended with other instruments and some of the lightning speed runs she does aren’t even noticeable. Ariana vs Christina, they both are equally good so it’s a tie. I prefer Ariana more because of her tone so that’s subjective. Whitney vs Beyonce - of course Whitney, her voice has so much soul and her musicality is so great. Beyoncé is almost there!
I don't know. Mariah's are like vowels embedded in her songs. She cascades parts of the song through these runs that are intricately placed in between or within the parts. They're mostly not the highlight of the song, because we tend to focus on her belting and whistling when she is singing climax. Tori's are placed more of as the climax, which is why hers are longer and sometimes, more complex to give it more wow factor as it is, again, the climax. Her runs are like technically perfect parts and leaves in awe. For agility itself, I think Tori is the winner. And I am saying this as a hardcore lamb.
Mariah easily. Tori is very precise with her runs but I think she still has that ‘here comes the runs’ in her music. They still sound good but more deliberate. However, Mariah’s runs fit the melody of her music much more naturally.
@0:51-pitchy @0:58- the whole run is pitchy @1:53 do I even have to say anything… I did love her proceeding run @1:55 tho, otherwise all are verryyyy pitchy and Mariah often does very glissando or pitchy runs. Whoever says she’s “untouchable” in this category is a Stan. There were much better agile singers during her prime. Honestly Whitney and Beyoncé slayed the agility category as well
i'm sorry, but there is something that's just so profound abt how Mariah does riffs and runs. she barely oversings them, she doesn't show off, there's constantly musicality in them that she tends to make it fit into the melody, structure, and sound of the song. and the fucking flex that she can do this in basically every register of the human voice.
This is the quality that whitney and celine dont have
mariah is untouchable but tori is really the closest in terms of musicality among the generation's vocalist

Mariah Carey her riff&runs, melisma is untouchable 👑🦋 but tori doing great lamb supports lamb 🐑
I feel like Tori technically has better riffs and runs but Mariah's tone and musicality on her runs are untouched
Tori is more soul, but I like Mariah runs more🤔
The thing I like about Mariah is whenever she do a riff/run she don’t stop and make it obvious it just fits so perfectly in the song you may not even notice
My point exactly. That’s how it’s meant to be, but these days, singers do it to showcase.
You are absolutely right about this. Not only Tori, but many other vocalists especially of the new generation do that a lot to highlight their vocal agility but with Mariah it's literally a part of the music and complements it excellently.
1st Battle: Mariah
Ofc Tori is very good and her riffs and runs are perfect, there's no doubt for that.
2nd Battle: Christina
Ariana is great, she uses her falsetto really good. But there is something that missing im Ariana's falsetto compared to Christina. I mean like Christina's tone for falsetto is very sweet and it just sound very good, I can't express it.
3rd Battle: Whitney
Beyoncè is one of the best singer and has perfect technique there's no doubt. @@alexandraanderson3988ohhh don’t even. Ariana is incredible.
Wow i love how you included obscure mariah vocals from the music box and rainbow tour that not everyone has seen!!
Tori can easily duplicate a Mariah run.
For me:
1._Mariah carey is more creative and uses her agility in alot of areas, lows, chest, mix, head, falsetto and Whistle, Tori could be as agile as Mariah but she has more control over her falsetto than in others areas.
2._Ariana use her falsetto better and she has more control over it but Christina has the most beautifull falsetto that i've ever heard.
3._Beyoncé just better technique and Less tension, Whitney's voice is more beautifull and loud but she often has alot of tension, sometimes it sounds like shouty and become thin as she goes high.

tori's amazing , hands down the best singer of this generation when it comes to riffs and runs but she has no vision of love msg moments for instance, mariah's agility is unmatched and her runs are by far the most complex ones in pop/rnb music, idk why ppl still have doubts about it, ,mariah was serving impossible runs in her first year of career at the age of 20 (see vanishing snl reharsal in 1990) and kept serving impossibly complex runs for years, her runs are not just made of quick notes or scales, mariah's runs are complex not only because of the insane amount of notes that are in them but also because of her ability to switch register so flawlessly that you can't even hear the flip from chest to head voice/falsetto or even whistle register sometimes, also not to mention her musicality and how she could do an octave jump out of nowhere and make it sound pleasent and intricated
Mariah always and forever ❤

Yah tellem they have to know that tori is just as good or even better
Honestly people can get so defensive
yes it’s clear they favor mariah more and havent really seen what tori is capable of/what she can do vocally.
Exactly. Mariah’s tone is amazing and unique but many singers are technically as good as her.
Yeah she’s touchable but to me she clearly won this battle, her riffs and runs actually fits the melody of the song and her musicality is unmatched.
So I'm going to Mariah's Vocal agillity
Falsettos: I prefer xtina's falsetto (ariana did supper rr great dahhling) but xtina's comfort in her falsetto and I think it's also more consistent and also she's more confident doing it (for me) and xtina's falsetto can be powerful and light too.
I think Mariah's musicality and creativity is simply superior.

1. Mariah Carey - Runs
2. Cristina Aguillera - Falsetto
3. Whitney Houston - Belting
*1st Battle:* Mariah
*2nd Battle:* Christina
*3rd Battle:* Whitney
When it comes to *Tori & Mariah's* vocal agility, Tori's riffs & runs put her in that untouchable league with that Mariah, Beyonce, Debelah Morgan, Jazmine Sullivan etc.
Beyonce is definitely a technical vocalist however so is Whitney and in this area, her technique is stronger plus the bonus of the inherent characteristics of her voice amplifies the superior technical development she already has in this area.
you’re very right here
(For the sake of others who may read this, when I use the word resonance, I am referring to “squillo”) Whitney has more TA development along with the fact that she opts to use a more pharyngeal placement as opposed to Beyoncé’s use of mask placement.

Mariah creativity is insane everything she does on point, Tori is so good but her runs sounds almost the same
Almost the same? I don't think so
I think at this standard it really is splitting hairs, most of it is going to be down to personal preference.

I'm not sure which night but I remember watching a video of her performing the song on tour where she went sharp)
Falsetto: Overall, I prefer Ariana's.
Belting:
C5: Whitney (I love Bey but she was clearly using a lot of reverb)
C#5: Whitney
D5: Tie
Eb5: Whitney
E5: Tie
I agree with everything you said, but Christina doesn’t thin out at the note you said. D6 is still pretty comfortable for her. In her prime, she was still very strong on G#6 and A6.
1st round: Mariah
- Mariah easily takes this. Agility includes transitions, octave jumps, trills, staccatos and musicality aside from riffs/ runs and she’s superior in all those areas.
2nd round: Ariana
- Ariana’s tone in this register is just so angelic especially in 6:22 where she sounds more like a flute than a human. Ease and agility in it I’d say is tie with Xtina but she wins in tone and musicality
3rd round: Whitney
- a close one because Bey’s belts are also crazy good but it’s also Whitney’s strongest feat that’s just unmatched.
@@6ixboss608 It's a battle of vocal agility ie. not just riffs and runs, but also staccato, trills, transitions, octave jumps etc.
*Mariah takes it.*
Of course she will have mishaps, Mariah has been singing since the 90's She is the Greatest Vocalist!
@@6ixboss608 tori also inconsistent throughout her run . Just check all her concert . They all not outdid the studio one . She missed a lot
Xtina D6 tho always get me
Tori vs Mariah: I preferred Tori.
Period.
Isn't the music mostly stripped when Tori is doing her riffs and runs while Mariah's are infused in the music.
mariah. xtina. whitney. xx
Comparing anyone to Whitney is just mean lol
Tori, Ariana, Whitney
Great video!
Oh god no, this isn’t it
Mariah,Xtina and Whitney.
In my opinion,
First Battle!
#Mariah vs #Tori: Both are INCREDIBLE songwriters, vocalists, and talented. I LOVE them BOTH sooooo much.♥️ However, l choose Mariah for the win.♥️
Second Battle!
#Christina vs #Ariana: Tbh, l prefer Christina more. I LOVE her music, voice and her vocals. Better singer and has better falsetto.♥️ l like her more.♥️ l don’t like Ariana at all. (No offence!😅)
Third Battle!
#Beyoncè vs #Whitney: Oh, that was a hard one to choose. My first and second FAVOURITE female singers.♥️♥️♥️ however, as much as l LOVE Beyoncé, l choose Whitney, even though l LOVE her just as much.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ l LOVE them BOTH so much.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Great video! xD ♥️
Mariah, Xtina and Beyoncé
Beyoncé over Whitney??
@@somestevenuniversewell it's my personal opinion
@@somestevenuniverse in terms of agility, yes
@@jeromewilson1048 it was about belting, not agility, Whitney is obviously the stronger belter
@@christiancolo7768 I'm a Beyhive l but I agree 👍 Whitney is a stronger belter but I feel like bey is more smooth and pleasant to my ears.
A great teacher and a perfect student. This is.
Xtina ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tje scariest thing i noticed about mariah was her riff n run is well- integrated to song n part of the melody... N most of them are so subtle. Unnoticeable unless u try to sing it to her original
8:27 I’m sorry but this just doesn’t sound good to me at all… it sounds squeezed and very tiny. Almost like that of a mosquito. I get that she wants to show off her range, but in instances I personally wouldn’t do that, I’d stick to what sounds pleasing.
It even sounds like a dog to me like where is the tone honey 😭
1: Mariah
2: Christina
3: Whitney
Lol No its Whitney before christina in my opinion
@@alexandraanderson3988they just selecting who dud better in each category , whitney was last so they chose her as the winner in the last category
@@MommyyriahOh okay 👌👍😅😊
Agility : Mariah
Falsetto: Ariana
Belting: Whitney
mariah set an unreachable status but one should never discredit the marvel that is tori kelly!!!!
Personally I feel that Tori's live vocal runs are much cleaner. Mariah's get a little muddy live. However, I love them both.
Tori are the best agility vocal
Ariana grande are the beautiful faseltto
Whitney Houston the voice
ARI (imo)
Whitney vs Beyonce.
Mariah Carey 1st, 2nd- infinity and beyond. Anyone else is after infinity 😆
It's a battle of vocal agility ie. not just riffs and runs, but also staccato, trills, transitions, octave jumps etc.
*Mariah takes it.*
Idk the i ly thing i dislike abt christina her falsetto is she always goes flat and it sounds incontrolled.
XTINA MY GODDDD😍😍
No hate but the creator of the video actually didnt put many of mariahs most impressive runs. Also tori kelly is phenomenal but very likely to over sing. Technically both are amazing, the best in my humble opinion, mariah is more pleasing to the ears so I ll say mariah
In falsetto, both are amazing but personal preference is christina.
Tori is one of the very few top tier vocalists to not over sing 😭 In fact, I’m always left craving for more
Lol Lara and natalie against Whitney I don't know🥴 I personally don't know natalie that well as an artist at all but she seems more like riff and run type of person and Lara seems like she has more of a softer voice don't know her personally as an artist either but these two don't seem to be like the belting type of people.🤷🏾♀️
Daydream Mariah is the perfect singer! But other than that I feel Tori Kelly takes the cake!! Coz she never misses....Mariah does infact...they're so good that just 1 lil note here n there makes all the difference.
Ari and Xtina are pretty equal in terms of falsetto and
Bey is technically flawless ut Whitney's voice was made to belt so I'd say:
1) Dayream Mariah > Tori > Anyother Mariah
2) Ari = Xtina ( I prefer Ari's tone so, for me it's her)
3) Whitney (Bey is there technically but Whitney was a natural)
Whitney and Mariah >>>>> Seriously, they are the best in pretty much every register
Tori is probably more agile than Mariah tbh. But Mariah is agile in every register, and has superior musicianship. Her runs feel part of the music while you can tell Tori is trying to showcase her agility (rightfully so!) Also, thank you for using post-prime Mariah clips!
Tori, Christina, Whitney
Tori is very much just barely passing but she’s got a lot of room to grow.
Mariah is
1 The greatest female voice of all time
2 The greatest female songwriter in the music industry
3 Mariah is a musical genius
NO MORE TO SAY
The thing is that Mariah does it to express while Tori does it to impress. Mariah wins!
Tori does it to express too 😢😮❤ I guess 😂 you're not a big fan of her 😅😊 to know that because she's amazing too Tori lmaoo
no you got it all wrong in my opinion ive never heard tori over sing and all her ad libs riffs and runs fit the melody and mood of the songs she sings every time. i recommend you dive into her live performances esp. her newer ones for example her live performance ‘in times like these’
This is my own opinion mariah is wonderful and amazing doing a particular kind of songs ( and her songs) with her riffs and runs.
When it comes to agility the 3 greatest of all time IMO is Mariah, Beyonce and Tori Kelly
Mariah Carey is another level of Greatness
Who wants to fight against the queen of all Singers, Mariah Carey? No one i think, let just seat and watch her.
Why do we have to compare! They are all awesome!
Honestly Whitney and Beyoncé slayed the agility category as well
First battle Tori for sure, without question.. second battle Christina, third battle Whitney!
I agree with 2/3. Whitney and Beyoncé are a harsh tie..maybe I don’t know yet
poor choice of clips , Mariah's runs on My All live in Italy and Australia outid any Tori runs
AND the lead the way run also beats any Tori run
