I have the 500TL, which is very similar to this camera, and I am having issues with the shutter button. I'm not sure if it's part of the camera's functionality and I just don't know how to use it, or if it's a mechanical issue. I just got the camera, so it doesn't have any film in it, but when I press the shutter button, it won't press down. Sometimes it will, but most of the time it won't. Do you know what the issue could be?
The shutter should always depress if the film is advanced. If the film isn't advanced before you take a shot, that could explain your issue. If you are advancing the film before pressing the shutter button each time, then there may be an underlying mechanical issue.
I just picked up one of these days today from a charity store I volunteer at and I noticed the mirror has a rust? like residue on the mirror. Is the mirror destroyed or could it be cleaned? A part from that the camera is in amazing condition and would be a shame not to get to use it for a bit.
That camera also was heavy even for that era and a bit klunky compared to the similar Pentax Spotmatic. By 1972 with cameras like the Olympus OM 1 as well as all the cameras that had a coupled light meter, this boat anchor didn't have a chance. I shot one of these throughout college only because I wanted to continue to use my Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 from my deceased Spotmatic and could not find another M42 mount camera quickly so I could keep producing work for my photo class.
Just found one second hand, will be picking it up tomorrow. This has been very helpful!
Fantastic! These are fun to use cameras and the lenses from Mamiya were really great.

I have the msx 1000, is there much of a difference between mine and yours? To pop the back open on mine you pull the dial on the left up.
Good question and I'm not sure because I've not used an MSX before.

It might be cleanable. I have a video specifically about mirror cleaning that might help.

Good point. These were big, heavy boxes. And the Spotmatic is refined compared to their handling.
What’s that lens???
Should be the 55mm f/1.8
