Have they talked about how racist BuzzFeed is? BuzzFeed repeatedly made videos shitting on white people, including one with self-hating white people. I strongly believe that people are equal and shouldn't be judged for their race. If BuzzFeed made racist videos about black people or Hispanic people, or any race, I'd be saying the same thing. I'm not going to sit back and be quiet when I hear people say that their own race is superior or that people of a different race are inferior.

@thompsonjames918 Do you mean they stopped people working in the cult? Or another job?
Buzzfeed deliberately targeted younger, inexperienced, vulnerable people who didn't know better and were ill equipped to stand up for themslves.
Those individuals did add to and perpetuate the toxic enviroment however they are also victims.

Looking back, I know now why I had this uncomfortable feeling creeping up my neck whenever I watched BF videos which involved their employees opening up about something so personal: they themselves didn't feel comfortable sharing their personal experiences and traumas! It was really a completely different feeling from when I would watch taste tests or drunk vids.

Buzzfeed was a *huge* part of my teen years, so much so that I actually applied to work there as a writer in 2019. Turned out to be one of the most frustrating hiring processes of all time. Had my work used for their profit with no gain on my end, went through an exhaustive hiring process with three interviews (one in person at their office in Manhattan) and they literally never got back to me. That was the moment when the rose-colored glasses completely flew off.

It’s kinda crazy cuz I was legit scared of AG and Ella while I worked there, even though we were so close in age the power dynamic was ridiculous. But yeah BF was the most exploitative, farming our emotional trauma for profit that we didn’t even see. Plus no ownership of our content. No path to promotion. Inconsistent metrics that only applied to some producers. I remember thinking years ago that is weird that Buzzfeed never credited actors/producers/writers for videos and short films. Also that Buzzfeed coworkers were producing videos but would also have them pretend to be love interests for videos like that’s super problematic.

I think I just thought it was potentially problematic that Buzzfeed folks had to act in faux relationships with coworkers for videos and some of them might have been in higher positions of power. It was always crazy to me how buzzfeed tried so hard to be seen as this kinda woke, super diverse company that talked about important issues, so much so that they were pressuring employees to talk about that stuff when they didn’t feel comfortable, but it always read as so fake and surface level because they’d release videos about the struggles of being trans and then the next day release a video called “16 period problems that ALL women understand” and like I get you have so many people working on this stuff so there’s bound to be some conflicting content but those kinds of things made it so clear that it was about pumping out the broadest appeal of stuff as fast as possible

I was a big fan of that Buzzfeed era, but once I started to work in a big company I assume all these bad things would happen to you all. because that's the thing with big companies, they all treat you like a number but want the best of you. Also, they recruit young people because they are full of hopes and dreams, but also because they lack the experience to make sure they need that job, and the thing is that with your first job you don't know anything about setting boundaries, so people in high positions take advantage of that. This was a lovely little throwback. All though it did make me insecure for a couple of reasons. 1) Success is such a chance of a whim. "Get hired by Buzzfeed in 2014." 2) Ella was a PRODUCER of a MEGA media company at 23. That's insane to me. 3) I think when I'm speaking casually and I haven't planned out my thoughts, I sometimes overuse the word "like" as I verbally process. I know how intelligent and well spoken this group is, but I heard a good bit of that linguistic crutch happening to you folks and I got insecure about my own language just hearing it a bunch.
More importantly, petition for Gaby to make the scathing Part 2.

Years ago Gaby was in a Buzzfeed video where they all steamed their buttholes, and even then I had a creepy feeling about it. It felt like the company was really crossing a line by asking employees to steam their buttholes in a video, as part of their jobs! Sure, the employees must have given their consent, but what if they'd said no? Would they get dinged for not being "team players," because they'd refused to steam their buttholes in a video that would be seen by millions of strangers? That's just a really weird, creepy thing for a media company to ask their employees to do! Even if it's "optional" and "no pressure," the employees still know that if they don't do it they won't get those precious views and the bosses might be less inclined to use them for a video next time.

It was actually the opposite - you could get 'dinged' for being in too many videos vs. producing videos. There were lots of people who wanted to be in videos so that wasn't the issue. I think the issue was feeling the need to get views by sharing personal things as an attempt to connect with the audience. Getting lots of comments and views is addicting - and oversharing can be the same way. The way the culture was set up it was encouraged to be open and express yourself but the idea was to always get views so I could see how that could feel like pressure to share and feel it was apart of your job. We also scraped many videos that came off wrong or after watching the cut people were uncomfortable with how it came out.

Thank you for talking about this. It’s hard being a content creator and it’s a strange experience to have parasocial relationships. I hope you all are doing well and thank you for explaining your experiences. 💗

I have personal experience with cults and so many things about buzzfeed meets those markers with flying colors lol. Most people don't realize that cult-like behaviors are SUPER common and in SO many places; self-help, religion, relationships, business. Inability to criticize, character assassination of or ostracizing people who leave, rewarding enduring toxic conditions and being happy about it, subconscious pressure to not have a life outside the community. It's very normal to still be thankful for the cool parts of it, or to still be overall angry about it (and justifiably so). Either way, it's important to have honest conversations so you don't fall into another similar dynamic. If you succeed you will gain a superior ability to spot red flags that seem innocuous to others, and empathy for people who are vulnerable to similar manipulation. Thanks for sharing!

It's crazy that so many of my favorite creators now came from such a toxic work environment. it's like they recognized talent but instead of nurturing it they just exploited it. It's unfortunate to hear.

Thanks for noting the exploitative nature of pressuring people to share their stories and be edgy/cool. I got some bad vibes in some videos and I just felt like some of it was under a lot of pressure.
I'm a film student working towards becoming an Editor...I like making films that involves me but I'll change things to make it not my story. I'll dress differently than I do so I'm more of a character.
I've watched y'all from the start, I'm happy you're all away from that.
