Ani is one of my favorite moderators. I'm so grateful that she can put a bit of the female daily gaze into a tangible and digestible perspective in musical format. That gift and her powerful presence made a serious impact on my life, my values, and self-worth. I can only hope that the generations after me continue to have an Ani in their life.
This is an encore. Ani usually encourages a sing along during the encore, usually to an up tempo song like Gravel / Shameless / Which Side Are you On. She gets more stressed at people whooping during the quieter moments of her performance. She has different guitars for different songs. If you look at the setlists printed on her live albums, the number next to each song indicate the guitar she will be playing to the tech who tunes them for her.
if anyone has a problem with singing along with Ani then they simply don't love her. going to recent shows has been made made all the more special by those moments, which are truly beautiful to behold and be a part of. Singing along with Ani at any show is the highlight of that show and i am glad she finally encourages it.
I have a problem with it, and Ani has a problem with it as she has said on a couple of occasions. It's annoying and rude. Even here she says "come in on the chorus" as in please don't sing with me during the verses. She's a spontaneous performer with different phrasings. I actually like hearing her brand new songs at concerts, mainly so the "fans" can't ruin it by singing along. In conclusion, I love her and that's WHY I have a problem with you singing along. I'm there to hear her NOT YOU.
Saw Ani in Nov. 2022 at Webster Hall in NYC. She was fantastic. Charisma to burn, this woman. She did not play this song...I think she's a bit sick of it, but not sure.
Without a doubt the best live show I've ever seen and I've seen the violent Femmes and fish and sublime without a doubt she was the best show ever saw I was at Woodstock 94 fuck that Ani .
Your advice motivated me to see her in New York (Webster Hall) in Nov. 2022, even though I'm old and had to leave for LaGuardia at 4:15 a.m. the next morning. Ani was wonderful, joyous, engaging, thoughtful, philosophical, and brilliant. My feet hurt a bit and I was dead tired, but well worth the lack of sleep and 45-minute walk to and from the hotel to the venue. Thank you, Ms. DiFranco for pouring your heart into your music.
I totally agree, but I'm pretty sure this is a encore, so people are probably a little bit drunk by now, and they're pumped to have Ani back on stage... so I think that kinda explains their... extra enthusiasm.

This is a very old comment to reply to, and I know next to nothing about guitars, but, Ani uses multiple guitars during a set. I am given to understand that she uses "open chording" on the guitars (is this a way to make playing easier within a given key?).
Laura Kate she has said as much at a concert and interviews. I was at a concert where she stopped in the middle of a song to talk about how she personally doesn't like when people sing along. She admitted she's not the Bob Dylan type of folk singer where everyone joins in, mainly because the songs are so personal and meaningful to her, so to hear hundreds of people singing along, she feels protective of that experience she's singing about. I believe it's in the documentary Render that you can actually see that clip from that concert where she talks about how she feels.
She has said so multiple times. On video. In interviews. And as a big fan, I can't stand going to concerts and paying to hear people around me sing I stead of Ani.
I'm simply wondering 1) what made her do a complete 180 with regard to audience performance; 2) why she named that concert hall that horrible name - it's just trite and, frankly, self-indulgent. Got nothing to do with this notion of "selling out," which I don't think Ani did, and which I don't really care about anyway. People have the right to make their choices for whatever reason.

Glorious, joyful... this is Ani. Before COVID hit, the last concert I saw was Ani in Fort Collins in Feb 2020. She's still got it.
