Did you have the head machined? I heard machining the head can mess up the VVT system timing. How much metal can be removed from the head before VVT timing is messed up? This is according to Car Care Nut on YT who is a former Toyota dealer master mechanic. He recommends just running a scouring pad to remove remaining debris. I guess you would want to check flatness of the head.
I have done a lot of them over the years and have never had a problem getting them resurfaced. If you take it to a good machine shop they will be able to tell you if it’s still within spec. Just make sure it’s not warped. If it is you will be found the job again. It’s a lot of work. Hope that helps.
To be honest I’m not really sure. We have had it for years. I think it’s a Mac tools one. So most like we got it years ago from our Mac dealer. I know you can get most of those sockets online or at like a car quest parts store.
@@csautomotive12 thanks. I looked at the bolts and thought i know I’m not going crazy. These are def bigger than 10mm bihex. Do you know the exact size
So the head gasket bolts looks tight, I thought maybe if I can take them out and tighten the bolts again, because i thought if the engine overheated twice made them lose, for temporary fix until I change the head gasket.
Head bolts are under a lot of torque. When a head gasket goes bad the gap is really small. So the only way to fix it is to replace the gasket. What year is the car? Some years had problems with the head bolt threads pulling out on the back middle bolts.
@@csautomotive12 it’s 08 Camry 2.4 I did that and when I put the camdhafts back and the chain the car would start and turn off, then I open it again and moved the chain to where I thought would be correct, then I started the car again then suddenly shut off… started again and would not crank looks like the chain come off. You think I did damage something now? But idea I should have just changed the head gasket. When I put the camshafts back I looked at your video of how you position them, I did the same, but I have no idea why the car would not stay running and chain come off
@@mike75479 Something’s isn’t right. The chain shouldn’t come off. Some times they will ideal bad or die at first. But it sounds like the timing or something is off. Did you figure out what caused the chain to come off?
Thanks for the replies bro… When I installed the camshafts on wrong position and started the car, the camshaft sensors did throw the codes… and the car would not start again but the starter will turn… Now I went ahead and changed the head gasket and the camshafts are on the right position with the chain, but now I still have that issue the car won’t start, if I change the sensors to new ones will fix it or needs the diagnostic to re-learn the sensors?
I would take it to a machine shop. If it has a bad head gasket then it warped the head and it needs to be resurfaced. You will never get a good seal. You don’t want to do all that work and not have it work. I have had good luck with buying remanded heads off eBay. Most of the time they are a lot cheaper and have all new parts.
You just have to set the crank and then the cams when you put it make together. It’s easiest to set the crank when the head is off then you can see that the number 1 piston is at top died center.
So there is Jo need to worry about Tdc as long as I place crank at tdc when head is out? Correct I am literally about to start this process and want to make sure.
2002 Toyota Camry 2.4 LE - was a 12MM triple Hexagon.. I almost stripped out the first two head bolts.. thank god I read on here a guy did all the work and then strip head bolt
I broke the ends of the oil pan studs off. I assume they have to come out because of dowels locating the timing cover? I guess I have to take off the oil pan now 😢
This video is helping me walk-through my head gasket on my 09 Scion. Thank you!
I hope it’s helpful! Let me know if you have any questions as you go along! Your welcome.
Best video on TH-cam on dismantling the 2.4 L thank you.

9:40 good catch on that hidden bolt. I'm about to tackle a 2007 Camry Hybrid head Gasket
Thanks! Good luck to you! Let me know how it goes!
Great video C&S, I like how everything from start to finish is in a non bloat way! Calm and to the point.
Thanks! I’m glad you found it helpful.
This video so helpful I’ll been replacing my gasket and watching your videos step by step and now I’m finally done I appreciate you
I’m glad you found it helpful. Did everything go good for you?
Hey man what socket size did you use to loosen the head bolts ?
People are telling me theres to different sizes. So you might need to see what head bolts you have.
Yeah you might need to!

can this be done without taking the head to a shop im one that dont have deep pockets they are mor like dried up river bed
Yes you do. There’s no point in doing the job if you don’t get it resurfaced. It will just leak again.
Where’d you get your impact bit from. I have a 09 matrix and it called for a 10mm bihex but the bolts are def bigger than 10mm

They are a 12 point and the most common size is either 12 or 14 mm. Hope that helps.

If we aren't taking the head to a shop is there a specific order the head bolts need to be removed in?

what size socket did you use for head bolts?
Double hex Toyota ranges between 8mm- 12mm double hex and triple square is different use double hex
Mine was a double heck. But I have had people say there’s was different.
Juat watched the wwwhole series👍
Sweet! Hope it was helpful!
Can you reach the headbolts without removing the cam? If I just ordered a new head.
No you have to take the cams off to get to some of the bolts.
The engine didn’t have to be at TDC? How will you time it?

So every time you have a blown head gasket it means the head is warped ?
Yes most likey. The head is not as thick as the block. So it lifts causing it to warp.
What size socket do I need to get the head bolts off?
double-hexagonal, aka bi-hex or double-hex or 12-pt hex, 10mm.

From your video I learned I need to change my head gasket with my credit card. What does your shop typically charge for this job?
Your right around 2-3k depending on what machine work has to be done.
I broke the ends of the oil pan studs off. I assume they have to come out because of dowels locating the timing cover? I guess I have to take off the oil pan now 😢
Update, it came off with the studs still in. I’ll remove them and use bolts when I put it back
That’s good to hear your got it out. Yeah bolts will work just fine.
Size of cylinder bolt?
Most are 12 point 12mm.
