- Just the beginning and end of this programme, with music that seemed to haunt several schoolchildren! Only time for a quick hello and goodbye - sorry I don't have any more of the programme material to upload!
One of the shortest TV programmes ever made - “Hello. Goodbye.” 😆
It was edited, you know.
@@ysthafellgynghori8423 I suppose you think irony is like bronzey and goldy but only cheaper.
@@yellowbelly06
That not irony though. TML.
The Beatles wrote a song about this episode.
Seeing this today reminds me how lucky I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, such a magical time
So many scary kids themes from my childhood, this was at the top.
Definitely at the top!
The beginning of Jamie and the Magic Torch used to scare the crap out of me 😵💫
@@mameli0701id it? I remember it as being quite an upbeat tune and intro.
@@TibetanFox68 ..the first 10-15 seconds 🫣
I sat in front of the TV as a kid mesmerised by this program! 😵
It wasn't just me then lol
Imagine waking up at night and a clown standing next too your bed with this music playing and the box spinning on his head 🤡👻.
off sick from school, laying under the duvet, snotty and body aching from flu, can hardly move... turns on tv, Channel 4... Picture Box comes on...
me: "OH HELL NO!" (jumps up like i just instantly gained the strength of 50 people and changes tv channel to BBC1 just in time for Play School)
Another classic from my home ITV region, Granada. Picture Box continued in this format until 1989 when it was given a revamp with new titles and a new presenter.
Memories of watching this in the assembly hall at school.
I just found out the theme was made by rubbing glass rods with wet fingers. French musicians.
Dirty bastards
Hello.
Goodbye.
Good old Alan Rothwell is now 83! Good old Alan!!
And he appeared in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa
@@prappsy3028
No way! Brilliant!
Still gives me goosebumps 40 years later...
Why
it just does, it creates an odd atmosphere the whole programme was weirdly unsettling like going back in a time machine to a parallel world. The same feel as Saphire and Steel only it was supposed to be educational lol
50 plus years
Poor Alan didn't even get a chance to speak! Im sure he is a lovely man. A better man than many in tv business now im sure.
Am I the only one who expected Pinhead to appear? Seriously, I found this music terrifying as a child.
I used to watch this at school
It's interesting that even in 1982 Granada were still using VT clocks with the pre-1968 logo on them.
Very prudent them northerners.
@@yellowbelly06 Yorkshire were using electronically generated VT clocks by early 1981.
Loving the clock at the start of this! Shows you the behind of the scenes of this show!
As part of the Granada Studios Tour they’d demonstrate how the director would countdown the beginning of a programme using the clock. The director usually counted down from the ten second mark but never from 5 seconds as there was a 5 second delay from when the programme went into transmission and the directors voice could be picked up on the opening credits, so the last 5 seconds were counted down silently. The same clock was used for Coronation Street too.
I met him outside my local library about 1999, he appeared to appreciate I remembered him.
i found this song before i ever heard of picture box but after watching this intro i must learn more about it
This music haunted me as a kid😎😎😎
Why ?
This theme is haunting and weird
This music disturbed me as a 5 /6-year-old.
Hello...goodbye. fucking classic episode 😀
It never occurred to me just how creepy the music was. Mesmerizing as well. What was the presenter's name?
Alan Rothwell
He was a actor in Brookside and a coke head
Also starred in Coronation Street as David Barlow, brother of Ken Barlow.
@@geraldcummiskey6721 In Brookside....not in real life 😁
Benny Harvey RIP
rest in peace big man
Limmy brought me here
I think we can safely say Pan here means the Great Horned God
Hello. Goodbye. That was a very short show.
Am I the only one who does not find the music scary at all?
Its terrifying 😆
@@lucybenton7341 I really do fail to see how this is scary.
@@eleanorhogan8643 I know, silly isn't it, but every time I hear it , it sends a chill down my spine 😱
@@lucybenton7341 fair enough.
It is creepy and disturbing because the harmony is full of discords that undermines tonal harmony. Also, it is the kind of music you would expect to hear on a haunted merry-go-round
He's the guy on the pier in Alpha Papa.
That has to be one of the strangest and most creepy introductions to a children's program. I remember watching it as a kid of 5 or 6 and even at that age I found it quite weird, even the presenter seemed slightly odd.
What about Kevin Graal .He was not odd
The ludicrously random appearance of 'PAN' written across the screen totally took me by surprise there. Plus that presenter seemed very suave there wasn't he.
Although I remember the theme tune the only episode I can vaguely rememeber is the one about dinosaurs.
You remember much more than me then! All I remember is the creepy music and scary presenter 😆
The original title for this piece of music was Dance of the Cadavers.
Are you sure?
@@bryanfraser6088 It was Manège from one of the Structures Sonores albums by Lasry Baschet.
@@Jill_SmokeandMirrors Yes that is the sound track to Picture Box from sometime in the 1970's till the end of the summer term for ITV Schools in 1989. i don't know what the sound track for picture box between 1989 till 1993 was called . by the way
PAN!!
Someone at Granada must have liked horror films! Who remembers the Night Time cat ident with the scary music?
th-cam.com/video/4gSpGyY7AHA/w-d-xo.html
David Lynch style music
Sure this presenter appeared in Brookside playing a heroin addict.
Yes, he played Nicholas Black a heroin addict husband of Heather Black played by Amanda Burton in Brookside. Alan Rothwell also played the part of David Barlow brother of Ken Barlow in Coronation St.
@Rik O’Shea nothing would surprise me about this creepy man
Weird
That’s the worst cover of a Beatles song I’ve ever heard
Mr Kite deconstructed.
