Experience is what's it's all about . What you learned there , you won't forget and will be ahead of others that don't have it. Your tenacity was awesome, as you didn't give up, frustrated yes, but kept on. You have a great analytical mind blessed with the ever important common sense. This was a very enjoyable series to watch and look forward to future videos. Big fan of yours, eric o's and scanner danner's videos. Thanks !

No computer, no relay, no fuses or even a throttle body was fitted to this vehicle.
A lessor mechanic might have thrown all these parts at the car without any success. Someone commented that a load pro would have found this. I doubt it very much.
The real problem is the customer understands the the hours of diagnosing time and the many thousands of dollars invested in state of the art equipment to find the problem that resulted in a simple fix.
    Great job Ivan.
    Persistence paid off

Awesome diagnosis Ivan. A case study like this is what makes diagnostics so great.
if you're ever stumped like this again, ask yourself "what would scotty kilmer do". he's a diagnostic guru and such an expert with lab scopes and electronics as a whole.

Beautiful. Most technicians would have probably tapped out two videos ago and whipped out the parts cannon. I honestly wouldn't blame them. This shows the value of having the right tools and enough persistence to keep trying different things. You're the kind of person customers would want to have solving tricky problems.
As an aspiring tech, your videos are very useful as they open avenues of diagnoses I would have never otherwise considered. Great work!

One of your best!! I agree with all the other commenters that "a lesser diagnostician" would have given up OR put in many unneeded parts, or both.
The other thing that is REALLY cool, and is a very valuable "teachable moment" (or "teachable several hours") for the rest of us is that even the best (that would be you) can get temporarily "stumped" by a one in a million problem. The key is that you STUCK WITH IT, and just kept narrowing and narrowing the problem down.
As you and some commenters have said, it really shows the value of having a 4 channel scope that cost several thousand dollars.
Thanks for posting this one, it is very encouraging to us lesser mortals.
    -Doug

This looks like a typical factory build mistake that took years to show up over plug not installed properly. Usually the problems show up a few hundred miles or with in of days when the the customer first get the car. I have seen many issues caused from a simple plug not connected or not properly pushed in from the factory creating hours of troubleshooting . After years of chasing this, I go right to the connections and check this first. Electric does not like resistance and connectors or a factory worker that did not plug in or push a plug in all the way......Great videos.

Unreal!!! I never would've guessed that in a billion years! EXCELLENT case study!!
What sucks with stuff like that is telling the customer you need to bill them for, say, 5 hours diagnostic time, and the fix was "plugging in a loose plug". They tend to get wide-eyed when you drop that in their lap. Nobody realizes just how much work it is to find things like this on modern cars - even WITH the proper equipment, knowledge, & skills!
Goes to show how complicated these cars have become. I think my next "new" car will have points ignition .... :D

Electricity can do some strange things!
My theory is, since the pins in the plug were just lightly touching, just the temperature difference between a cold engine and a hot engine would cause enough expansion to complete the connection when warm, and separate it by contraction when cold.

I think you said in Pt 1 that this problem plagued the previous owner. It wouldn't be surprising to me if it came from the factory like that and given how intermittent @~1x/day it took years for surface oxides to build up on the connectors enough for it to be reproducible.
I fixed a MIDI synth once that had unsoldered power supply wires resting in the plated holes and it had worked flawlessly for years before it got flaky.

My gosh, what an odd problem! I don't think there's even a chance that connector vibrated its way out, so either someone was in there, or it wasn't assembled quite right from the factory. Given that a relay was replaced, and someone else seems to have chased this problem already, I sort of sway towards someone having already been in there, but who knows!

Great work, Ivan. I was guessing a rubbed wire somewhere between the relay and the computer since you had previously ruled out the feed wire and the fuse since the fuse was powering the other items with no apparent problems. Since you were moving around the relay box and the computer that left only the wire in between. What's interesting is that you said the fuse feeds the other relays but it actually feeds them on different wires coming out of the fuse box. Subaru's diagrams are a bit different, too, so that doesn't help, either.

After it didn't fail on load testing it pointed towards a contact issue or load detection circuit in the PCM & the ole harness shake test worked. Did you ever find out if someone was working in that area. Good series!!

A better and much cheaper tool for diagnosing intermittent is any old car speaker in series with a tail-light bulb. You hang the speaker and light across the circuit you want to monitor and then you can go wiggle things and you just listen for clicks and scrunches. With an occasional glance at the taillight to see if the juice is flowing. No scope, no eyeballs tied up, dirt cheap and very effective.

Well done! In vid 2, you pulled the relay at about 9 mins, and same code 2102 set. That should tell you right away that you are missing some sort of feed at some point or another, regardless of all of your load testing. I'm really glad you decided to go to the box. I was thinking about rodent damage there myself, but you found a bad connection of a different sort! I fully agree that w/o a scope that has a high live update ability, you would've been firing the cannon. Now, my only question to you, is how to charge for all the time involved? ;)

Great that you found the fault but what is really amazing was that the fault was reproducible. Had the fault been intermittent then this might have provided a bit more of clue about intermittent electrical continuity. I like the scope but a detailed .visual inspection and wiggle test first can sometimes be a time saver.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

Hindsight is always 20/20...the wiggle test can get you in trouble when you accidentally fix the problem itself, which I was trying to avoid. It's definitely a fine line, but yes, I should have gone for the wiggle test a bit sooner in the process :)

LOL! Watch the video again and take some notes. Wiring diagrams are key. Be brave!

Great work, man. You know, you really could have used the load pro leads to tie your camera to the hood prop, since you forgot your tripod. Just a thought...

Awesome series and fix! Probably a stupid question, but how is the throttle being controlled during the periods when the relay is not functioning?

Great question! PCM still controls throttle but it only opens like 10% so it doesn't need a high-power feed to do that.
