Story 1 Yeah that's definitely on the parents, they should have made sure all doors and windows including the sliding glass doors were locked before leaving their kid home alone. Story 2 Sounds very creepy to me! Sounds like these Men are definitely up to no good, maybe possibly they're trying to rob him. Story 3 When you're left home alone for the first time and you're a kid it can be pretty scary then somebody comes knocking at your door. Story 5 Not a good idea to just leave your door unlocked for a friend when anybody could just come walking into your house and you thinking it's just your friend, putting you in danger of almost anything happening.

Okay i need to say something and hope all parents will heed my warning. If your child is under the age of 16 they should be with an adult. Hell, even at 16 they should still be with someone responsible if they are not. I know what you guys are thinking "yeah but thats not always possible" and sure, maybe not every family can afford a sitter. Totally get it. I'm broke too. However, a sitter is not necessarily always going to have to be a paid professional. It could be a neighbour who has a kind heart (ensure you KNOW them), a family member (over 18), a friend. If none of those are an option and youre going to be gone for more than 20 minutes, send your child (because yes, even at 16 they are still a child) to a friends house. If they are grounded, it doesnt matter. Its worth their safety. They wont be there forever, just until you get home. If NONE of these are an option, take the kid with you and if thats not an option then you shouldnt be leaving. I guarantee you that someone will take your kid for half an hour for you to go to the store that you trust. So lets go over a contingency plan for if you absolutely must leave them alone for whatever reason. Teach them (which btw is your job as a parent) what to do to ensure their safety and what to do in the event of any emergency. Have first aid kits srashed in each room alongside a fire extinguisher, a phone for them to use, the list of emergency numbers (999/911/equivalent, your number and the number of a trusted adult) and teach them that if they even suspect in the slightest that an intruder is in the house, they are to immediately call the Emergency Services. Not you, not a friend, the emergency services. Teach them how to do basic defense, this could be the difference between getting hurt/killed/kidnapped and not. If you can afford it, a panic room that is inaccessible without a code and the code to go with it. A panic room seems excessive, i know, however, if you have the money to afford one, it could be the saving grace for your family if an intruder decides to target you. Which they most likely will, because clearly you have more money than sense if you can afford a panic room. If schools and colleges and universities have a lockdown procedure for students in case of intruders, why shouldnt you have one at home? Logic.
Oh and also, flashlights and emergency phone chargers inside the emergency packs. Forgot to mention that all of these things should be kept in the same place.
