One thing that bothers me now after being round motorcycles for near enough 50 years,is the wave or nod, I still do it to everyone from the smallest 50cc scooter to the biggest bike but I maybe only get 30 to 40% return. We are all on the road dealing with the same dangers,we must stick together 100% of the time. I always carry my tool kit and if anyone is at the side of the road I always slow down to make sure they are ok. Call me old fashioned but I do miss the camaraderie.
Great vids Stu keep them coming. Gutted that I missed the opportunity to do the anti tamper survey. That legislation really bothers me.

While out and about in Jersey…I nod to everyone on a bike…back in the day..well 42 years ago, I used to get a nod from a Hells Angel…he was part of the Windsor Chapter….so…I nodded back…..I do that now, I’d say about 30% nod back…..oh how times change hehe….

I am with you 100% on your number 1 of bike snobbery. I am a biker through and through, I have been a motorcycle courier and a motorcycle instructor, I think I have ridden about 200 thousand miles on bikes, but currently I choose to ride a medium sized scooter, I now hardly ever get a nod from other riders and get chuckles when I pull up at a biker pub and even comments suggesting that I clearly can't handle a "proper" motorcycle. Thanks for your comments.

Good funny video Stuart. You have nailed it with your observations about unruly riders and owners of expensive machines. Have experienced both the types myself 😄. Have owned a Bullet 350 as well as 500 and now have the Interceptor 650.
Just love your attitude towards motorcycling. I believe one should ride for your own satisfaction and not to prove a point to anyone.
Keep on with the good work buddy 👍

All very true 👍 Some of these big tractors on the road are not just being used for farming. They are moving construction equipment, bulk soil moving and various jobs that should be done by HGV registered and taxed vehicles.

In the USA we refer to certain equestrians as HOHO's (Hateful Old Horse Owners). Back in the 90's they waged a relentless campaign against off-road bicyclists on public trails and single-tracks, until it was proven that one horse can damage a trail far worse than 20 bicycles (when the trail is wet they "post-hole" the trail horribly). The animosity between HOHO's and everyone else that uses a road or trail still exists, but at least the courts have put them in their place. I found it interesting that brand snobbery is a "thing" in the UK as well (and you mentioned two brands in particular that I have or currently own). I've had Hardly Ableson's (Harley's) in the past and currently avoid the brand for a myriad of reasons (but mainly because they're yesterday's technology at tomorrow's exorbitant prices, and the poseurs that gravitate towards them on this side of the pond), and I currently ride a Triumph Scrambler 1200XC. I looked real hard at the Royal Enfield line, but felt that the Triumph was better suited for my needs (the fact that I got my Scrambler for two-thirds of the MSRP on account of it being a "press fleet" bike prior to my ownership didn't hurt either). In any event, thanks for putting effort into your channel; it's enjoyable to watch.

Its nice when another rider gives you the nod or as you said waves but there have been a few times like approaching a roundabout or doing 70mph on a dual carriageway that I received an over enthusiastic wave from adventure bike riders where I have thought that their waving hand or concentration would have been better served on the handlebars or the road ahead.

As a BMW (Nine-T Racer) rider I probably don't fit that description, Stuart ;) I wave at all bikes, just glad to see other bikers enjoying their steeds as much as I do...regardless of make, size, or type. Used to own Honda and Aprilia, so I'm not stuck to one brand for the sake of it. Always great to hear people's experiences on other bikes. BTW really enjoy your channel...the honest, un-biased views are a breath of fresh air!

And very educational, too - in sense, that it's always interesting to learn about things causing difficulties for motorcycle riding in different countries. In fact, I was feeling a little jealous since starting watching your channel - "Wow! - I used to think - They have such good riding conditions there. Roads so smooth, no chuck-holes, no speed breakers, just few vehicles on the roads!". Now I feel that no country can bee free of problems!))

Absolutely hilarious, yet perfectly true. One of the reasons my dad started motorcycling back in the early 70’s was because he wanted to know there was only one brain on that horse. A bad experience when he was 6 years old circa 1958 when he tried horse riding and the damn thing galloped after another group of horses, leaving him clinging for life with his arms wrapped around the bugger’s neck 😂

One of my pet hates are people who have bikes but don’t bother to learn how to do the most basic tasks.
A rider asked on a group yesterday if Vaseline is a good replacement for picture or grease as he hadn’t got either. For gawds sake but some grease and lecture it’s only a couple of quid. For me part of the fun of biking is learning how to do basic tasks to keep your bike running safely and well

I love your rain bit. Glad it's not just me who believes rain is the conscious, thinking and self-aware being of the skies. In fact I remember one particular cloudless summer day on the Harley it came from nowhere and pounced. We arrived home sodden and filthy and yes, the roads leading up to our estate were as dry as a bone. Thus entailed another three hour cleaning session with toothbrushes, 25 polishing rags, three sponges and (of course) a full tube of Autosol. But, it's not just rain which is a living, breathing being. As I get older, all manner of domestic items seem to have taken on life. Knives and forks, jar lids, teabags and definitely toast. All intent on making my latter years a little more frustrating and annoying aided and abetted by gravity :)

  • @canopus101

I thoroughly enjoyed this video Stuart, it made me chuckle. For my part tractor drivers where I live, Wales, are generally considerate. They still leave a load of booby traps on the road though!
My pet hate is cyclists, not the person going to work, just having fun or visiting the shops, I have done that on a bicycle myself. It is the ones dressed up as Spiderman that are the problem. Riding around in packs and blocking the road and, unlike Welsh tractor drivers, never pulling over to allow other vehicles to pass. These uninsured, no numberplate, untaxed buffoons will then puff and pant up the hill (820 feet above sea level) at the outskirt of my town before tearing down it as fast as they can go, hitting the town 30mph limit at 50mph or more. Sometimes at night with no lights.
I love your informative videos, to me as you, "any motorcycle is a great motorcycle." On a bike rally I meet people covered in patches and badges who arrived in their motorhome, I also meet people who arrived, with luggage, on cheap commuter motorbikes. Guess who I respect and talk to more?

Talking of the Queen, what about dogs running out into the road in front of you? I bought a new VFR and half a mile from the garage a dog ran out, and I have this picture in my brain. I grabbed the brakes and doing a stoppie I was looking down over the front wheel with the dog's tail under it.

  • @jvlivtriple
    @jvlivtriple 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Oh well, I have a tractor, own horses, own a Triumph (my 2nd), and have owned a couple of BMWs. I knew what I was getting into before I moved to the Pacific Northwest of the USA so I really can't complain about the rain. I haven't melted yet (snowflake) though. I really do appreciate you shutting off your bike to let the horses by. That surely counts as considerate riding. I think I will sell my KTM and buy a Royal Enfield so I will be less inclined to ignore speed limits. I would have said Harley Davidson but...
On a serious note, you didn't mention noisy motorcycles. In my conversations with non-motorcyclists that always comes up as their number one complaint about motorcyclists. And yes, I really have looked at Royal Enfields but the local dealer is a flake.

Stuart, fully agree with your comments regarding motorcycle brand snobbery. I have always been a fan of Japanese motorcycles, with a particular liking of Kawasaki bikes in particular. I love my 1977 Z1000 but this does not preclude me from being interested in other 2 wheel vehicles. For example I have just purchased an immaculate 2003 Honda C90, which in my humble opinion is a great little bike upon which Honda built its motorcycle empire. I also enjoy riding my Goldwing, which again can completely divide the biking fraternity as it is viewed by some bikers as a two wheeled car. Finally, when you are Prime Minister please remove the ‘fuel duty’ tax from petrol, as this tax is then subject to another tax, namely VAT. A tax on a tax is taking things too far!

  • @robinwatford

Some good observations there! It always makes me chuckle when people judge others by their choice of motorcycle or car. Stuart, highly amusing, but also right on the nail. One significant thing you didn't mention about horse riders is the large dangerous mountains of excrement they allow their animals to leave on roads, paths, bridleways etc. As a onetime dog owner, I was used to clearing up after my animal. 😂 Great video! I’ve enjoyed your content all summer since I purchased my first Triumph in June. Now that said I have to say from the prospective of an American whose been privileged to have spent a bit of time in your part of the world, what constitutes a “road” there is highly suspect. Many of the cyclist TH-camrs in the UK I’ve been watching ride on little more than bicycle trails. If I can lay down across the “road” and be longer than the “road” is wide it’s hardly surprising tractors take up the entire track. In any case I look forward to my next trip to the UK and renting a bike to experience those “roads” soon! Thanks for the great content! Cheers

GREAT video Stuart!!! Fully agree with your pet peeves, especially the last one. HD riders in USA are a mix, but many are very elitist. Giving the two fingers down gesture may or may not get a response from an HD rider if you are on anything other than a Harley. Keep the videos coming!! Until I buy a Continental 650 next year, I live vicariously on your ride videos!!! Thanks a lot!!

    The snobbery.. Its rife
When I owned a cruiser, sports rarely nodded, BMW never
When I owned a sports, cruisers rarely nodded, BMW rarely
When I ride my V-strom, sports/adv riders mostly nod, cruisers 50/50,bmw rarely
When I go out on my 300cc scooter - no one nods

Ok my pet peeve is people who ask a very easily found question on face book groups but just want to post for the sake of posting, for example what type of oil should I put in my bike or what tyre pressure....READ A BLOODY MANUAL. As for farmers tractors don't get MOT's and think that it's acceptable to drive round at twilight without a light on the back of a 40 foot trailer held together with string!
Nice rant, you could do 5 every month!

Two things I don’t understand Stuart, why are some biking vlogs getting like fashion shows leading newbies to think that the more expensive protective gear worn, the safer it will be. My mantra is don’t wear any that isn’t a legal requirement and then ride with a greater sense of awareness. Secondly, horses don’t feel sticky yet they make glue out of them.

Love all motorcycling. My only gripe is a set of traffic lights near where I live. The sensor in the road doesn't register a motorcycle. OK at busy times a car comes behind you and triggers the lights. But early morning#######

Hi Stu. As one of those “bloody southerners” living in exile across the Pond, it’s heartwarming to hear a good ol’ Yorkshireman rant. Here, we do have Harley-Davidson snobbery. They look down their noses at anything that isn’t from the HD motor company as they sit at the traffic lights, revving their bikes with loud exhausts and loud wirelesses, looking like escapees from the Del Fuegos, as I tear off on my Kawasaki 125 from the lights. 🌋🌋🏔🏔🏍🏍

Hi Stuart and thanks very much for this ironic but truthful 'state of the game' video. I do think a lot of horsey people show a lack of competence in their riding and judgement and a lack of acknowledgement when shown courtesy towards them.
Bike brand snobbery another thing I'm in accord with. I find it is especially prevalent in BMW/Triumph and Ducati riders - but there will always be people who don't get it so I just leave them to it, especially the GS riders who only go to the shops on theirs.

Older video but i have to say something about the rain.
Most naked modern bikes have short front fenders due to 'trends' that make is more and more miserable. I know that Enfields have excellent long front fenders. And big plus here for fully faired big windscreen bikes that pushed the rain over you.

I have to agree with you regarding horses on the highway.
Anything that's on the road, mixing with other vehicles should be fitted with some form of stop switch! The snobby attitudes of the people on top them does nothing to help the situation...
Only met a couple of bike snobs, they rode something made in Bologna.
The aggressive speed merchants spoil it for everyone.
Regarding the rain, it just motivates me to get out when the sun makes an appearance!

While you are clever enough to run the country, you're clever enough not to want the job. Those who want the job, shouldn't be let within a mile of it. You might have just lost some votes from horse riders, farmers & Triumph owners. I've just agreed with everything you've said, but then I'm not a farmer with a horse & Triumph!

Stuart, you have much to be grateful, here in India we don't have much horse dung but a lot of cowdung, dog potty (and unmentionables on the roadside) and not to mention huge potholes and cows and goats sleeping on the roads. But we don't have a farmer's subsidy for diesel. We have a huge tax on fuel, so much that it is about double the cost as compared to other countries. When you become PM of the world please do something about my complaints. Also make it mandatory for all people to ride a Bullet once in their lifetime at least, so that they say that they have really lived their life to the fullest.

I live in South Africa and we have a few more points to add to your list, like mini bus taxis and millions of pot holes that on a rainy day can be fatal to your rims, or to yourself. I keep to speed limits, yes I do accelerate my bike to the speed limit reasonably briskly. What bothers me are mainly vans, BMW, Audi who tail gate me, whilst I'm doing the speed limit.
Closely related to the above are the drivers who want to do 35 MPH everywhere. 20 MPH limit, they want to do 35 MPH. ditto for 30 , 40 . I've had a tail gater in a 30 limit. It opens up to 40. I do 40 , they disappear a long way behind. Come in to the next 30 limit, and within a little while they're tail gating again.
