- I have just finished working on this National HRO-500 solid-state synthesized receiver dating from around 1965. All electrolytics have been replaced along with around 15 resistors and a Zener diode. The receiver was then fully re-aligned and is now functioning very well on all 60 band segments from 5KHz through 30MHz, easily meeting spec. I also refurbished the matching LF-10 LF/VLF preselector and there is another video demonstrating that in use with this set,
Great video, nice radio, over 40 years ago I had a nc120 radio when i fit into swl, regards mark
Glad you enjoyed it Mark. It is certainly an interesting receive for all sorts of reasons.
The dreams of our youth… lol
Nice work as usual Gerry
Thanks Richard. Indeed - this was certainly an unobtainable radio when I was starting out! I used to read through the US ham radio magazines and QST with mouth wide open at all the goodies in the adverts!! FYI, I have written a detailed article on this refurbishment - it should be posted to the SPARC radio museum website soon
A thing of beauty, interesting that it has synthesized tuning dating back to 1965 and a PLL in lock indication light. Really nice looking receiver too, I would be interested in how well it performs. Thanks for posting the video. Best regards, John M0XFX
Hi John. It performs very well, especially considering all but a couple of the 37 transistors are 50 year-old germanium types, and, as far as I know, are all original. It is able to detect SSB/CA and AM signals
