      This is also the film/role that John Hinckley, Jr. obsessed over/where he first became infatuated with Jodie Foster. He shot Ronald Reagan in order to impress her, by showing that he was willing to do the same thing in real life for her, somehow 'rescuing' her from reality.

    To me, the most important scenes in the film begin with Scorsese as the passenger with the big homicidal mouth. He's just blowing off steam. Odds are, he's not gonna kill his wife. Because he can SAY it, to a stranger, instead of bottling up the rage. Travis is in awe of this, because he's unable to articulate his own violent fantasies. In the following scene, he attempts to have a similar "heart to heart" with Wizard, but again, completely fails to say anything. That tried and failed, he buys a shitload of guns. From that moment on, there's no other way for him.

    I always wondered if the end was literal or just his imagination. Even the parents thanked him, lol. It's the ultimate wish fulfillment for him, that everyone thinks he's a hero, that's why I don't trust it. The guy who sold the guns was my favorite character. I've known a couple of people just like him, they can hustle anything and make it sound good. I'm not sure if you know this, but in the early '70s it was kind of a trendy thing to do for couples to go check out a porn movie. So Travis wasn't just doing something stupid out of the blue. I think he's just so alienated that while he might know what other people do on dates, he himself has no feel for what's right or not on his date with her. Early to mid '70s film grain created a movie experience like no other. Check out Dog Day Afternoon to see another movie that has a similar grit and feel that I don't think will ever be duplicated on digital cameras.

      There is a debate going on about the ending. Some people say it is meant as a criticism of the media creating images of reality that are just not true. I like to believe it was the fantasy of a dying man.

    • @jamesoblivion
      @jamesoblivion 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a very good fantasy, for a man whose plan always included his own death. If he's dying, he should be satisfied in death. It's what he wanted. But in reality, his survival is just another failure, even if he's conned the world into believing he's a hero because he killed the "right" people. In the end, Travis is a live failure, and society is a sucker.

    • @Funnysterste
      @Funnysterste 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesoblivion Good point. But Travis wrote letters to his parents in where he claimed to work for the government. Same thing he told Iris. So he somehow must have cared to some extent how people perceive him.
      If he just had wanted to end his life, he could have killed himself. But he wanted to perform some kind of act, that affects others as well. He wanted to punish Betsy by killing Senator Charles Palantine. His death would have diminished all she worked for the last months.
      Palantine was an important man - Travis was just a cabby.
      In Travis' mind he was a hero and savior in shining armor who was willing to sacrifice his own life to reduce some of the filth of the street.
      There is a scene that could be interpreted as a clue for the "fantasy of a dying man"-theory. At the end of the movie, after he got Betsy off, he is looking into the rear view mirror. At that moment there is this weird distortion-effect.

    Even though this film is universally regarded as a masterpiece, I’d still argue it’s underrated. This film has so much more nuanced subtext than Raging Bull has, yet that is almost always named as the best of Scorsese’s big three (with Goodfellas). Taxi Driver is the most difficult to watch, because it’s so incredibly raw.
    Raging Bull and Goodfellas are both absolute masterpieces though. The opening titles of Raging Bull are just absolutely gorgeous.

    Taxi Driver does a way better job than The Joker of telling a story of a man losing his connection with society and the people/world around him, as he drives around at night viewing the world/people through the window of his cab, disconnected. As well as doing a better job than most modern movies of displaying "toxic masculinity", we as the audience can see that Travis could be a charming, happy, content person, but he chooses to give in to negativity, rationalizing violence, dangerous perspectives on women and a distorted sense of moral superiority. Very important movie for men to watch in my opinion

      Always hated the "It's a dream" theory. Ending was suppose to show the fickleness of public persona. He's hailed as a hero for mowing down pimps and gangsters entrapping a teenage girl, yet was going to assassinate a very popular President hopeful. Had he done it, he would have been made into a John Hinkley figure ironically enough. Plus it takes responsibility away from the audience. It just make it easy to just say "Oh, he's a crazy nut and everything was inside his head" instead of the ironic lesson in the end. Cheapens the film
      Besides, who fantasies themselves failing to commit suicide?

    Taxi Driver is pretty fascinating. It doesn't really work narratively like most movies. First time I saw this movie I was so mesmerized by the hypnotic nature of the film, with those reoccurring shots behind the windshield with the water hitting it and the windshield wipers going back and forth. I've seen this movie twice now and it's fascinating every time. So interesting and provocative. This is one of Scorsese's best, IMO.

    The world of Taxi Driver is it's own character, full of apocalyptic imagery and people. But it isn't an exaggeration either. New York in the 1970s was a horrible, disgusting place, falling apart at the seams. Crime and violence were rife, and reading about vigilante justice in the newspapers was often the only catharsis people could get. Anyone living in a society like that could lose hope and go insane. This movie captured the grittiness of 1970s New York like no other film. NYC was most definitely not a glamorous place back then. Crime, drugs, corruption ran rampant. It was a city in decay on the verge of bankruptcy, not to mention filthy. You see New York City today (more specifically Times Square) it’s a night and day contrast compared to back then. Today you have Hershey World, Disney, Cheesecake Factory, M&M, etc, whereas back then that same district was known for hookers, porno theaters, strip clubs, it was just notoriously seedy! Out of that grit and decay, however, came both a thriving music scene (punk and CBGB) and also a terrific backdrop for many great films of that era!

    My take on Travis in this movie was a man forgotten about society, a war vet with pts and looking to fit in everyday life. I think his main motivation was to make an impact and be known to make change even if that meant self sacrifice, the failed assassination would of most certainly had that impact but saving a young girl from a life of imprisonment and prostitution had an equal affect, I think being a soldier seeing people die around him left right and centre Tortured him and now being able to take the situation into his own hands he just wanted to help and obviously let out a little frustration

      The film is considered a time capsule (along with MIDNIGHT COWBOY and BASKET CASE) for 42nd Street, the notorious grindhouse circuit with grungy theaters and prostitution activity. It's all gone today but this is what it looked like back then. It's not very exaggerated.

    • @BenChanNYC
      @BenChanNYC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I wouldn't go that far. There was a brief trend of porn being seen as a new kind of sexually liberated art film, but in the context of this movie, Times Square was literally one porn theater after another, drugs were rampant and the area was a cesspool. (hence the attitude of Travis and his coworkers) Travis was not taking her on a "regular" date by normal standards of the time, but it seemed normal to him because that's the world in which he lived.

    Travis was a contradiction like Betsy said. he see's himself as someone better than the scumbags in the streets, but he's hanging out in triple X theaters, and killing people. at one point he says to iris "i dont go around hanging out with killers and junkies like you do!" and meanwhile he killed a guy last week. thats why he gives himself that crazy look in the mirror at the end, after iris said "haven't you ever looked at your own eyes in the mirror?". i absolutely love this movie. total grime-noir. there was one point where the guy is watching his wife in the window, and he's talking about killing her with a 44 magnum pistol. a few scenes later when travis buys a gun he asks for a 44 magnum lmao!! scorsese played that cameo role himself because he was too uncomfortable to ask anyone else to play that part.

    This movie is so unsettling - to me it's because we're basically inside the head of an insane, murderous racist for the whole movie. We see the world as he sees it, through his eyes. And director Martin Scorsese's cameo (as the guy in DeNiro's cab who wanted to kill his wife) reinforces the idea that the whole world is crazy since, as the director, he's in charge of it all.
    Imagine how exciting it must have been back in 1976 to see this - such an original and powerful movie from some young relatively unknowns like Scorsese and DeNiro. Luckily, the pair would go on to make several movies together - among them Raging Bull, Good Fellas, Casino and The Irishman last year.

    Maybe y'all had "questions" because you guys talked over alot of the dialogue? Is this the new way to watch movies now? Lol, It's not just you guys so I don't blame you...if this is the way to watch movies nowadays, I'm pretty sure it's not the way to go about it. A film Director's intention is for the audience to watch films in a dark room, on the biggest screen possible, and to keep ears open at all times for the script. Also, "questions" CAN be a good thing, as the best movies sometimes leave it up to individual to interpret, rather than to spoon-feed you all the answers. The best films "show" and don't "tell". Love you guys anyway, and nothing personal.
