I learned to drive in an LA Lancer in Australia - it may have been that one! And then I owned one that was blue and was painted another colour on the external surfaces due to the oxidation of the metallic paint that usually happened after only about 4 years in the Australian sun. Lancers were absolutely ubiquitous in Australia in the mid-to late 70s. Chrysler made them locally in 3 successive series - the LA (c.1974), LB (c.1976) and LC (c.1978) - and spent a pretty penny on great TV advertising with Beach Boys music. Not just that, Chrysler had a works rally team and pushed the motorsport angle very effectively - including by bringing out to Australia one of your countrymen - Andrew Cowan - to win rallies for them. They were soon much beloved of the rally and club racing guys. As you will have noticed from riding in that one they are actually VERY small by today's standards and that really helped the performance with a weight of only about 850kg and (for the time) biggish engine capacities of 1439 (4G33) and 1595 (4G32).
The modern WRX cars are phenomenal machines and they're amazingly capable, just watching them eat up the terrain is amazing, but I don't love them like I do the old rally cars. That Lancer is brilliant and I want one parked in my garage so I can just go out and start it up occasionally!!! Great video.
Just under a 100bhp is perfect in older lighter cars, managed 98bhp in my 1966 MG Midget with quite a lot of work to the engine (and Dellorto DHLA40 carbs) + lots of stripping out to 630kg. At the time it seemed like a missile!
My brother had a 1977 Australian Chrysler Lancer 1.4L from new i remember was $4300 new in GL form from Chrysler Australia. He had after 4 big accident fixed by insurance snd front all replaced he hit a big kangaroo in the back roads near our suburb in Perth western Australia. He traded in 1982 for a new Alfa sud imported into Australia. Was a very reliable cream colour lancer sedan ..
My wife and I had a brand new two door, bright yellow 1600 old Lancer, which we bought in Orpington in Kent, it was one of the quickest car I’d ever driven, we both loved it
Very cute front end/body, the rear lamps are lovely and saporro-esqe, but what a raucous joyous noise the carbs make on tap, seriously fun, nicely done. Flypasts were spectacular. Splendid
Recall in the 70s my father on the verge of purchasing a new silver colt lancer but my mother persuaded him to purchase a yellow colt galant instead, turned out to be a great car! I have never seen so many clothes pegs in cars before as there have been on your NZ odyssey! Great video-can't believe such a great noise from 90 odd bhp!
Power: Less is more. I have a 1303S Beetle which had 100hp from its bored out 1300 (now 1914cc) and downdraft 40idf Webers and it went like a lunatic and sounded amazing. Now it's getting a freshen up, fresh paint, GFRP arches and an engine rework which should bring the power up a bit and let it breathe at higher RPM, up to around 6500rpm instead of a max of around 5000. Ian, I'd like to invite you to take it for a spin when it's back!
One of the best HubNut road tests ever. This has it all. The lack of music, the lack of power, BUT there is also the abundance of real fun, the rally pedigree, the best sounds to come from a car, the brief meeting with the driver, the sheer knowledge of the car itself and, of course, the wiper segment. It's the little things.
Saw this car 'Lil Evo' at the Stratford AMP Show in New Zealand today! I recognised it from watching this video months ago. Trust me- the car is awesome. The owner Mike was there chatting to me. He was having a giggle about the filming and 'showing-off' for the camera. It is a great car and Mike is a great bloke! Cheers Greg
Mitsubishis with rear wheel drive had lovely manual transmissions. I had one of their small trucks with a five speed, and it was the best thing about the vehicle.
These Lancer sedans weren't sold from dealerships in Australia with the 1600cc engine. It was a 1439cc engine developing 92bhp. The sedans also didn't have a tachometer, surprising given when they were released in September 1974 they were the fastest sub 1.6 L, rear wheel drive piston engine sedan available in Australia.
My dad had the cheapest one, a 1978 1200 L with 55 bhp. It was the first car I drove myself. Good times. A good friend of mine got the 1976 1400 GL and after that the 1981 1600 GSR. Also good memories.
Yes, a very rare model in the UK. There was a T reg (1978/79) saloon that sat in the front garden of a house on the estate I grew up on back in the 1990s. It was immaculate. Very pretty design too.
Your videos are amazing Ian. I passed my test in 1984 so most of the 70s stuff had rotted away and there are so many cars I missed out on. Your films give a little insight into the glorious cars I never enjoyed.
Harry's Garage is the only channel with supercars I can watch while relaxing. Not so nerve wracking noisy as most of those channels are. The only noise coming from the engine and drivetrain proper 👍
My mate had an orange one of these as a drive to school car back in our Highschool days. It was amazing how long the motor lasted until my mate realised that there was no oil in the sump and the motor was bone dry. My mate reckoned there was just enough oil around the piston rings to keep the engine lubed!
Hi Ian,what a epic video, the noise this Lancer makes is awesome, sounds fast, but nice with it,a car you don't see, another classic car on the road driving.
A mate of mine used to rally something sort of similar - a Datsun 120Y with a massaged 180B SSS engine. Think it topped out at 8k rpm and 160 hp or so (amazing power for the time)...and sounded almost exactly the same as this Mitsu. Sadly, I think it got wrapped around a tree at some event or other - it was a very long time ago now. Great memories.
Thanks Ian for another super video,i would imagine the power to weight ratio is good,so 90 bhp or there abouts will be fun, many thanks again for bringing us some HUBNUTOLOGY from the other side of the world. Take care.
I blew up one of those Lancer 1600 engines in the 80's. Oops. Big bang. Lots of smoke. Fortunately a 2L imported Japanese racing motor bolted straight in. Much fun was had.
That was a magical experience for me, back in West Yorkshire. Also, the wiper noise was seriously evocative of what I know not wot! PRIMARY EMOTION: Envy!
What a GREAT video - and characterful car. "Light Weight and Simplicity Rules". As you say, Ian, all for 93 hp, a super gearbox with well chosen ratios, and a few mods! What a great owner and his wife and family are. Many thanks.
I used to be taken school with a friends mum in on of these. It was the same blue colour as under the bonnet on some days. I always loved the noise of a set of side draft carburettors. Awesome.
That was the first car I ever drove. Aged 16, round a car park in Leeds, when visiting my Grandmother, who decided to "teach me how to drive", until she was told I really should be 17 and have a provisional licence!
It was a pleasure watching you enjoy yourself driving this car . You had an even bigger grin on your chops when the owner hopped in the driver’s seat and gave it the beans . 👍👍👍
Wow, not seen a 77' Lancer for many years, it seems most died of rust here in the Netherlands. 93hp wouldn't do much in a modern car, but it seems this thing gets quite a shove from that engine, the sounds are very much like my 1.6 NA Miata, delicious.
The laughter said it all. One of the reasons I own a Fiesta ST is that every TH-cam review I watched before purchase included much giggling. Godspeed, Lil Evo...
What a brilliant car! Love the detailed info about the wiper blades! It's great that this little monster is still competitive today. What really stood out to me is that it has my late Father's name across the windscreen - he would approve!
What an amazing car. It even has two wiper switches, your in your own idea of heaven. You need to be careful at the start to avoid that big rock next to the garage.
Ian, you're a supernerd..! And that's a compliment, by the way. Your knowledge about various and sundry windscreen wipers seems unsurpassed. This car is clearly a blast to drive - it seems very quick for a 1.6 litre. Thanks for the video - the result of which, is that I've decided that I'm content to leave others to the joys of rally driving...
Has that late 70s, beefy sounding engine that made 70s the small displacement high reving cars legendary. Pretty amazing example, since most of em probably were wrecked, scrapped, rusted, or restored...not many outside Japan or Euro-UK today.
Oh that induction noise from those twin Dellortos! Such a delicious sound. I had a mate who had a set fitted to his Alfasud Sprint. It sounded exactly the same but with a slight undertone of boxer engine goodness! You certainly had lots of fun filming this one! Thanks for sharing such mad, good fun Ian! :-)
That front end reminds me of the Dart/Valiant and Aspen/Volare styling of the era...at the time Mitsubishi was partnering with Chrysler (the Colt was sold as a captive import and later there were things like the Sapporo/Challenger).
WOW!! What an ultra mega super cool car! Reminds me of my first car which was a GA series Galant. Also powered by the Mitsubishi Saturn engine but of only 1300cc capacity. Apparently the larger 2.0 and 2.6 litre Astron engines fit quite easily into those Lancers! Anyway. Keep up the great work. I'm really enjoying your videos. Cheers mate👍
2.0 and 2.6 into a GA/B Galant needs either the radiator moving forward or use electric fans, otherwise bolts straight in. GC/D Galants they just bolt straight in same mounts, if you used the 2.0 5speed you just moved the gearbox mount back 1 bolt hole on the chassis and away you went.
Iv be rebuilding one of these from the ground up, they are such a easy car to work on and are cheap, i got my'n December last year for $300nzd and have only spend around $2500-3000 on it all up, the Rota GridV-Silver wheels on it are half of the cars cost so it just shows how cars like this are grate to work on if you have a budget and the community around them are awesome, im in the process of painting my'n pearl blue.
@Chewie Bamford Now with that power on tap in that car I'd like to have a drive somewhere where i didn't have to think about speed limits and just have some fun in it.
Spectacular opening shots ! A highly enjoyable and fun video ! So much fun yes indeed. Liked hearing and seeing the owner with the great sounding accent as well as a great sounding car. Well done video Ian! You crossed the finish line first on this one. BRAVO! RICH&2 carnivorous kitties LA.CALIF USA
A former brother-in-law had a print shop and he had a mate who rallied cars. He did the ad's on the cars for free - all he wanted was a panel t advertise his business ( now defunct ) Chevron Screenprint. I saw he has the roof panel and asked him why as surely that was the least seen panel. He showed me a magazine article where a previous car had been rolled and Chevron Screenprint across the roof was in full view. He told me in club rallies few pictures made the press but a roll was spectacular enough that when captured it was always in the rally mags and he got more free advertising from that than I could imagine !
I owned a silver Lancer like this years ago, lovely car, really reliable and pretty fast considering. Used to lose the back end regularly which I think was down to it having the original cracked and hard tyres on...dodgy! But I was 17 and didn’t care/skint lol
Ah! The LB Lancer! Love it! My neighbor had the standard 1400 GL in 4 door form. A white one. I nearly had a chance to buy it off her as my first car when I was 18, but she was kind of on the fence.... I think she loved that car more than she realized and selling it to an eager teenager kind of scared her off! Lol! I think that guy with that awesome rally lancer will need to look at the diff soon! It has horrible diff whine at high speeds!
I recall the popular Chrysler Mitsubishi Australia musical ad for these to the tune of the Beach Boys "Deuce Coup". Lyrics like "Its my little Lancer and you know what I like", "Its got a 1600 hemi engine under the hood" , "and one more thing it won the Southern Cross", and anything else they could change in the Beach Boys song to refer to the Lancer. So perhaps the L1L in the number plate is a reference to this advertising in New Zealand as well. Could not find the Ad on TH-cam though. Popular in Australia to but not enough to be a cosseted classic.
The Lil Lancer ad worked so well they did something similar in 2000 with the Lancer with "Shaddap You Face". A popular song from Australia that got legs around the world.
A typo, The above should "and one more thing it won the Southern Cross Rally". Winning the biggest Rally in Australia was a marketing plus for a Lil Lancer.
Gearbox whine ... backlash bangs... induction noise ... that’s just ace ... couldn’t stop chuckling alongside “Yeah the brakes are soft ...” said in a way like they are meant to be that way you eejut. 93hp ... all about momentum and orbs of steel ...
"Two wipers switches...", I could hear the tremble in your voice.
Luckily there was no pantograph arm or we could have had a little mess to clean up :-)
I learned to drive in an LA Lancer in Australia - it may have been that one!
And then I owned one that was blue and was painted another colour on the external surfaces due to the oxidation of the metallic paint that usually happened after only about 4 years in the Australian sun.

I love the fact, that it's pure driving with this car, no interferring computers taking over. Real fun can be had with this car.
Real SIDEWAYS fun...
When Mitsubishi made fun cars. What a great little thing and fab sound. Cheers.
A cammed-up four cylinder honking through twin carbs - one of the best sounds in motoring.
The modern WRX cars are phenomenal machines and they're amazingly capable, just watching them eat up the terrain is amazing, but I don't love them like I do the old rally cars. That Lancer is brilliant and I want one parked in my garage so I can just go out and start it up occasionally!!! Great video.

Was a very reliable cream colour lancer sedan ..
Now that's a proper noise...
You don't need brakes in a rally car like that, you just steer it on the throttle...
Love it...
Awesome ride, gotta love the induction sound of oldschool carburetors 🎶
Fun weekend car.... The noise is fabulous
Fabulous! and a Celeste Dash, woo-hoo. Had a yellow 1978 Celeste, fond memories
Real cars like this bring a year to my eye.
The fact it’s only 93bhp makes me love it more. Only 3x the power of my old 2CV!
Splendid

You looked very happy when the owner was driving! There is nothing half so much fun as messin about in simple fast cars
Those door cards look so nice! Hearing it rumble at idle under the bonnet would be very cool as well!
Power: Less is more. I have a 1303S Beetle which had 100hp from its bored out 1300 (now 1914cc) and downdraft 40idf Webers and it went like a lunatic and sounded amazing. Wow! I never wanted to drive a Mitsubishi more than after seeing this - that was just awesome!
Side-draft carbs give such a fantastic sound
Crazy good :D And that greedy finger trying to caress wipers through a windshield - priceless :D

What a fantastic noise!!
The first 15 seconds of this video reminds me of a PlayStation Gran Turismo replay. The sight, the sound. Just brilliant!
Harry's Garage and Tyrrell's Classic Workshop are by far my favourite TH-cam car channels - with the exception of this one of course!
Harry's Garage is the only channel with supercars I can watch while relaxing. Not so nerve wracking noisy as most of those channels are. The only noise coming from the engine and drivetrain proper 👍

93 horses wtf that thing is so cool, well done hubnut another cracking video👌
Nice. Had a colt sapporo back in the 80s 2ltr coupe, was quite a rapid cruiser back then 👍🏻
Hi Ian,what a epic video, the noise this Lancer makes is awesome, sounds fast, but nice with it,a car you don't see, another classic car on the road driving.

I could watch an hour of that, bloody marvellous!
Those shifts are quick!
Thanks Ian for another super video,i would imagine the power to weight ratio is good,so 90 bhp or there abouts will be fun, many thanks again for bringing us some HUBNUTOLOGY from the other side of the world. Take care.
What a car! Those passing shots...WOW!
I blew up one of those Lancer 1600 engines in the 80's. Oops. Big bang. Lots of smoke. Fortunately a 2L imported Japanese racing motor bolted straight in. Much fun was had.
Privileged to see all of the footage of this day.. And the speedo! 😅
that is a cool car, love old rally cars, i have a1985 coupe quattro slightly up graded. over the years. thankyou for the video leon
Cool!
Those little 70s cars, are definitely a blast to drive. High school memories......
Brilliant stuff. Full hooligan mode. Gotta love a classic rally car.
That was a magical experience for me, back in West Yorkshire. Also, the wiper noise was seriously evocative of what I know not wot! PRIMARY EMOTION: Envy!
A low power car driven at 110% will always be more fun than a high powered car at driven at 10%
The gear ratios are just perfect.. I love them...
Awesome.
It was a real delight to watch you enjoy driving this automobile. And the owner well... out of words
I can see why Hubnut enjoyed this drive. The car has so many similarities to Betty. No headlining and........
Another quality HubNut production...... Enough said!!!
That was the first car I ever drove. Aged 16, round a car park in Leeds, when visiting my Grandmother, who decided to "teach me how to drive", until she was told I really should be 17 and have a provisional licence!

Later dad had a 1981 Mirage GLX super shift. Wow. And mum got a 1984 Tredia Turbo super shift. Mega wow. Great car on the oad
A proper rally car making a proper rally car noise. 😃
Fab film ! Although I might have said that "Mitsubishi's assault on the World" started with the AM6 Zero !
What an amazing car. It even has two wiper switches, your in your own idea of heaven. You need to be careful at the start to avoid that big rock next to the garage.
Harry Garage, the absolute other end of the spectrum to Hubnut. Both great channels.
Best ever Ian , beautiful noise 👍
Glad to hear you have so much fun! You sound happier than you have done for a while. Keep looking after yourself...
Wonderful Mitsubishi rally car, less power, more fun!
Amazing, what a lovely bit of kit!
This has radically changed my perception of horse power
Has that late 70s, beefy sounding engine that made 70s the small displacement high reving cars legendary. Pretty amazing example, since most of em probably were wrecked, scrapped, rusted, or restored...not many outside Japan or Euro-UK today.
Oh that induction noise from those twin Dellortos! Such a delicious sound. I had a mate who had a set fitted to his Alfasud Sprint. It sounded exactly the same but with a slight undertone of boxer engine goodness! You certainly had lots of fun filming this one! Thanks for sharing such mad, good fun Ian! :-)
Very very nice.
Superb lil car! Like you said, loads of character helped along by those wonderful sounding side draughts. My favourite car of your trip so far.
For my sins I've not tuned in to your channel lately, wonderful to see you on form and enjoying yourself. May all your shonky car dreams come true.
That front end reminds me of the Dart/Valiant and Aspen/Volare styling of the era...at the time Mitsubishi was partnering with Chrysler (the Colt was sold as a captive import and later there were things like the Sapporo/Challenger).

Um.. Could we have another hour of this, please? Judging by your laugh this car was more fun than a hot tub full of cheerleaders!
Hmm. I may need to test that to confirm.
That seems way quicker than 93bhp and the sound is awesome. Could have loads of fun in that car on the Buttertubs Pass near me.
I don't think there's very much weight in it!
@@HubNut I got that impression too, looks a great fun little car.
@Chewie Bamford Now with that power on tap in that car I'd like to have a drive somewhere where i didn't have to think about speed limits and just have some fun in it.
Absolutely in love with this car!!!
Spectacular opening shots ! A highly enjoyable and fun video ! So much fun yes indeed. Liked hearing and seeing the owner with the great sounding accent as well as a great sounding car. Well done video Ian! You crossed the finish line first on this one. BRAVO!

Exellent, the kind of car that makes me grin like an idiot. love it!
Thanks mr hubnut
Brilliant. That looked like so much fun! Who needs 500hp?👍👍😊
Looks like my old Lancer I did rallycross in back in the late 70s, and mine was that metallic blue.
Lovely Jubbly Mr HubNut.
What a great little car Ian. A superbly presented and fun video. It's great to see rare cars.
I owned a silver Lancer like this years ago, lovely car, really reliable and pretty fast considering. Used to lose the back end regularly which I think was down to it having the original cracked and hard tyres on...dodgy! But I was 17 and didn’t care/skint lol
So cool, sounds so sweet that engine and gearbox 👌
These videos are awesome bro. I haven't seen home in 21 years now so these vids are a treat. Cheers man!!! 🤙
“Yeah the brakes are soft ...” said in a way like they are meant to be that way you eejut.
93hp ... all about momentum and orbs of steel ...
Wow that's really nice mate looks sweet sound of it. Another great Hub Nut moment.
That’s a real rally car fantastic 👍🏻👍🏻
TWO wiper switches???? Awesome video, as usual!
So that the nav can quickly get the wipers going to clear the screen after muddy puddle and the driver has his hands full.
The inner child in us all must escape from time to time, nice ,😁👍
Yep! I went back to being 18 and just passed my test again 😂
