- These reality shows really lean into that disclaimer we've all seen before, about how some portions of the program have been edited. While most fans know that reality shows aren’t just pointing a camera at someone’s life and saying “Go,” these series appear to have gone above and beyond to trick their audience, and, in many cases, landed themselves in hot water for it.
From the celebrity chef who claimed he designed Princess Diana’s wedding cake to the longtime acquaintances a certain show alleged had never met before, let’s take a look at a few of the most egregious examples of reality shows lying straight to your face.

In all fairness I know people that think it's 100% reality. Sad times we live in.
Giving back the money on cash cab and getting a cheque instead is safer in terms of potential lawsuits that could arise. If a contestant had said they never actually got paid, the show wouldn't have any proof that they did, in fact, pay them. I think it's a minute detail to the legitimacy of the show. It adds more of a quick-simple-game-show effect seeing them hand over a wad of cash.
+Kierra-Lynn Brisbin Production companies are a business, they legally HAVE to do it that way. If they win more than a few hundred dollars, there's paperwork to be filled out and processed for taxes, etc.
Because then it wouldn't be a "cash cab" but a "cheque cab".

exactly zero surprised me because I've never seen a reality show that even remotely convinced me it was starring real people.

What a disappointment. The only reason I watched this was to see what Breaking Amish lied about. I didn't realize you meant it was only an Amish-size scandal; boring. I was hoping, although I'm not sure why, it was all going to be staged. I only saw the first season, but I couldn't believe my eyes!
I liked Stan Lee's "Who Wants to Be a Superhero?" But I was a little disappointed when the ones I thought were the best superheroes got kicked off for dumb reasons (like the guy who told the grade-school kids just his first name and they nailed him because "a real superhero never reveals his secret identity to anybody").
The Kartrashian shows are fake...Wow I'm so shocked & disappointed, They seem like such a wonderful, upstanding family !!!

OMG! Reality shows are fake? I'm shocked, shocked! And here I was thinking that it was just a coincidence that those cameras were there filming away. Next we will find that the Survivor contestants went home to their own beds at night after filming.
Never believed any reality shows for 1 sec! The minute I saw two contestants bad mouthing a 3rd party with a camera staring right down at them just inches away, I said alright, cut!

You forgot the infamous"Amish Mafia"...dun,dun,dun....you know the one with Lebanon Levi and his ex-hooker/stripper girlfriend Esther....this show was a blast to watch because it was just SO unbelievable.Or the "biker" show The Devil's Ride....a semi-scripted show put together by the pro-wrestling guru Eric Bischoff and his partner,the always undistinguished Jason Hervey.
+MD JONES Another one that comes to mind when thinking of over the top fake is Hardcore Pawn, just the most intense staged fights ever they were hilarious to watch.

I absolutely hate "reality" shows and never watch them. How anyone can ever believe anything these shows broadcast is beyond me. To be fair though, the show about people at home watching TV together and making comments can sometimes be at least watchable (if nothing else watchable is on) although, again, it is not very demanding intelligence wise. :-)

so you think you can dance is also all staged, my dance instructor a few years ago told us that all the couples dances where you choose names from a hat all had one name inside and everyone knew who their partner was as well as the style of dance. She also said apparently they only choose a certain style of dancer to win so alternative style dancers never win

If you watch any of these show with the sound turned off you will notice how staged everything is, sounds weird but it works.
You can tell its fake even with sound because these morons on "reality" shows can't act. Its all so scripted. No one talks like them lol
Actually none of it surprises me because Hollywood can't leave anything to chance. Real life is much too boring so they feel like they need to control every aspect of production.

Buy houses & actually tear the electric out of them because they don't believe in it, but will pester their neighbors to death wanting to use theirs. Same with the phones. 2. Wear those heavy wool clothes all year long so they usually stink to high heaven. 3. Don't believe in owning a car but will be more than happy to ride in yours. 4. Many times marry just a little too close in the family tree. 5.Will expect you to drive them long distances to family weddings etc & not even offer any gas money. 5. I watched one just the other day go in Speedway & come out with a case of beer. Just blows my mind!

If I was on Cash Cab and they asked me to return the cash and wait for a check in the mail. I wouldn't return it and just get out of the cab and walk away with it. If anyone tried to stop me I would tell them get your hands off me or I will have you charged for assault.

I wanted to kind of watch Breaking Aumish but I desided not to. Thank gosh for that. As for the rest, I never watched them ether. I'm More interested in watching TH-cam videos or read a book to watch TV.

The reason why the winners have to give back the money in Cash Cab and wait for a cheque is more for accounting/fraud purposes. The accountants enter the winnings into the accounting system to process a cheque so it is easier to keep track of than if they had to count the money left over after each taping and it reduces the risk of fraud as the host or production staff can just pocket some of the money if the whole amount did not have to come back to the studios. Pretty boring reason but necessary =(

Well, to be fair, everyone was already well aware that Breaking Amish wasn't real. Even the original cast members had said they had left their "Amish worlds" 10 years ago. *The fake couple, when the original Season 1 was airing on TV, not afterwards.

can we just talk about the fact that the hills actually exposed themself at the end of the series? maybe it wasn't the hills. I can't remember. but at the end of the hills or the city, they literally zoomed out and showed a studio and all that shit. also. Heidi and Spencer have spoken out about how fake it was also. why so negative towards them.

I wouldn't count, The taxi one, only because they couldn't just start filming someone, in a moving vehicle, were they can win money. They need to insure them as contestants, also I think there might be a law in America about being able to win money, were you need to sign a contract before. Basically I don't think many people believed, this cab was randomly picking up people as part of a game show. As for the people who came forward to tell everyone, they obviously seen an opportunity to claim money by revealing something, everyone already knew. Which makes them just as bad as anyone making a so called fake show. The same idiots would try suing the local Mall at xmas, because they found out, the person dressed as santa, is just a security guard who works there.

Sit coms seemingly have burned out every joke and now we have reality. Maybe we need better sit-com writers.

I learned in school that the Amish have nothing against a member leaving after turning 18 years old.

I live in Amish country, Pennsylvania, not Lancaster, but we have enough up here, Sunday nights are watch out coming over the crest of a hill. I'm certain that, that show is a lie, they would be shunned for sure, plus Amish don't like to be on camera, around here they do not even have pictures on their ID cards. Although it was funny one time my Sister and I were going somewhere, we stopped for gas and there was a van full of teenage Amish boys(they have drivers that take them around to stores, sometimes)they were all staring, pressed up against the glass, I was like "I think we are being watched" we smiled about it, it was amusing to say the least.
