    I went to Italy with a friend, we stayed with her grandmother , in her kitchen she had a cabinet with jars of tomato sauce , peppers, and green beans, all were done in recycled jars of varying sizes and shapes. I asked she ever had any problems she looked at me said my mother and grand mother have done this all their lives! She said Americans are so wasteful ? Lol!

    I have used such jars for canning 60 years ago and at that time people raised their eyebrows when they saw that I went out and picket wild apples and made juice and applesauce etc and stored it in my pantry. Yesterday I “canned” several jars of figs and they will be used this winter, coming out of the most interesting jars.....

    I save all my jars, I'm an herbalist so always storing dryed herbs or making tinctures in them, I just recently entertained the idea of those prego type lids are certainly worthy of using for canning, in fact the seal even after using is better than the new canning lids, companies spend billions to convince you it's not safe so you'll continue to buy their products and waste more

      There was never any shortages. It was just brand snobbery. They ONLY wanted the name brand and refused to try other lesser known brands!!

    • @nhutchins100
      @nhutchins100 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought two cases of jars from a well-known restaurant supply chain here in California that was branded with the restaurant suppliers name on them. So I canned 24 jars of ground beef. Only two jars stayed sealed. Even the other ones that sealed within twenty-four hours the lids popped up. I've been canning meat for 15 years. I had to freeze all the meat and take the jars back to the store and because of shortages there were no other jars to be had. That was a complete waste of time money energy and resources. Not all lids seal like the name brands.. I have since purchased several off-brand packages of lids. I've had some that sealed fine and others that were garbage where only a few sealed. I always wipe the rims with vinegar and I always heat my lids in hot water. I refuse to pay 50 cents each for lids. I might as well just buy the food in cans. I don't know within reality there were shortages but I do know that the stores did not have jars at the time, and couldn't find lids either. Then once the jars were made available again they were ridiculously priced.

    Been doing this a long time now. First I tried pressure canning with water filled jars. Then food filled jars and let them sit a couple years. Once I convinced myself it works I quit worrying about the availability of canning jars and lids. Since I have a lot of recycled pickle jars and canning jars I bought years ago I use both.

      That is awesome Tony! It is a wasteful world we live in, I came across a website that other day that was selling those pickle jars that have like a barrel look to them for 10.99 for 12 plus shipping. I laugh because I like like 40 of those I got for free.

    I looked up home recipes for goo-gone to remove sticky labels, and a bit of baking soda with oil and lemon juice works well. Spread it on the stickiness, let it sit for 10 minutes or so, then rub off with your thumb, no butter knife scraping the glass necessary!

    Bonn Maman jars are my favorite jars to save and reuse. They were my first experiment using recycled jars. I love the size better than 1/2 pint (too small), and a pint (too big) for jams and fruit butters. That’s what works for us.
    I also use bigger jars for dehydrated stuff.

    On the tougher labels after a soak; this may help - even the plastic salad dressing containers with warm enough not to melt the plastic, the label will slide off, or most if a ton on adhesive, then add cooking oil and baking soda, let it sit a day or two, and it should wash right off. And as noted by many as a frugal gal too, with other names cited; I save the cereal bits after cereal has been depleted; yogurt toppings, baking crumbs across your bread and much more, so salad dressing containers that can not be utilized for canning can offer a nice visual of the variety of cereal bits along with almonds or pecans spiced as a gift, or you can imagine many other options pending your food preferences and interests.

    Thanks SO much! -- When you can with these type lids, do you "finger" tighten them before canning? When/how do they screw all the way down? I'm confused about how this type lid seals. (I normally use lids/rings and Ball Mason jars.)

    • @tonykaczmarek278
      @tonykaczmarek278 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Finger tight. Just like lids and rings if you over tighten it wont seal right.just like lids and rings if the button pops up it's gone bad. Or if you see mold. Otherwise its good. Personally I prefer the straight sided pickle jars as it seems the glass is thicker. But either will work. I even used a pickle jar and a black painted pizza sauce jar as a solar cooker along with some foil as a reflector to heat up my canned foods on sunny days

There are ton of options of mason jars, but not lug caps. I am thinking I may have to drill a hole in the lid and use a cap of some kind, just can't figure out how to secure with a nut underneath the jar or insert a threaded ring from underneath...Ideas? I choose products that come in a nice jar. Unfortunately manufacturers change the shape and simplify them. Longer threads make a more secure fit without pressure canning. TO-82 used to have 4 threads forty years ago, now they have 6 so you don't have to twist them as much I guess. I find that new lids sometimes have a worse fit than ones that came off the product. They have to be bent into shape, and only match some of the 6 possible orientations well because the threads are not identical. TO-66 usually fits well. I rarely see other sizes, which simplifies selection.
    Hot melt glue can be removed with boiling hot water inside and a wipe with a short chain hydrocarbon (oil).

    When you water bath these is the water already boiling when you put them in to seal? I tried a batch and as I was putting them in the boiling water some lids popped off! Maybe I didn’t tighten them enough

    I'm a crafter, and to get labels off of jars and stuff I use a heat gun, and they come right off. Some use a hand held blow dryer if you don't have a heat gun. It's basically the same thing. That might work on getting your labels off easier.

    My mum would just use a rubber band and a type of circular clear cellophane for her jam, does this work for canning?

    • @corkyscountrycorner1609
      @corkyscountrycorner1609  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not recommended if you store it out side of the fridge, did she use like a wax on top of the jelly too?

    • @RiverDanube
      @RiverDanube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, she grew up very poor and learnt how to do things cheaply. When the jars of jam cooled down, the clear top would be concave instead of flat and she knew they were sealed. Once the jar was opened and being used, she would put the original jar lid on it.

      I am sure it worked fine, fruit is very acidity, and basically just ferments. Still not recommended for guidelines but amen to our ancestors for taking care of themselves and not being so wastefully. We owe them all of the luxuries we take for granted.
