Can Tess or anyone tell me *why* to dry can instead of "wet can?" What is the benefit from not adding water to the jar? From my reading of canning principles, the purpose of the water in the jar is to help with uniformity of heating the vegetables throughout to prevent bacteria forming. According to various sites, dry canning heats the vegetables in layers and drives moisture to the surface of the vegetable where harmful bacteria can survive. I have no dog in this fight, I'm just trying to understand why dry canning is "better." What do you get out of it? For the extra 10 seconds it takes to add liquid to the jar, I don't understand why you just wouldn't do it that way.
I have used jars like this before and then you hear don't use them. I used some for jelly. I am going to try with carrots. I plant in kids swimming pools. I am soon to be 81. Hi Tessa, also my first time here and I'm fascinated by your method. And your jars look so beautiful. Well done. I'm just thinking here, would you say one could dry can soft fruits such as peaches and pears? Thank you. ♥️💮
Hi I havent tried to dry can peaches or pears as I like the light syrup I make but I have just put nectarines in jars with no liquid and it worked out fine. Thanks for watching
@@tessearle4828 Hi Tessa, I also like a light syrup, but always looking to cut the sugar with more acidic types of fruit, so, that's great, thank you. I'll definitely try the nectarines👍🤗❤️🙏
Thank you very much. Have you ever canned beetroot. I really enjoy beetroot done any way at all.
Yes I have pickled beetroot, Thanks for watching
Do you have a recipe for that. I am a total beginner. Thank you.
So did you treat them like quarts and only load 7 in the canner?
Same as pints
I am certain the USDA would not recommend this method… But, I am willing to try this 😁
Thank you for sharing. Do the carrots come out super soft?
Yes no different to if you added water we don't mind I use them in soups and stews.
How many times can you use the same lid. Thanks.
Just curious why dry canning vs the other method?
Is she using the original lids from the pasta sauce
Yes I am
Have you tried silicone gaskets inside your lids? Mine have lost their seal, and I am wondering if it’s better to buy replacement lids or just gaskets.
a regular canning flat will fit inside these jars and work wonerfully
I see this video is from a year ago so I hope you still answer 😉
My question is...... I've never dry canned, was wondering if your vegetables change color over time while sitting on the shelf?
No they are still the same
Thank you 💕
How long would you process quart jars of carrots?
30 mins for quarts
Hi, can this be done hot water bath canning, or does it have to be a pressure canner (i dont have it) ? Thanks
Yes you can but I think you have to waterbath for 3 hours. Do some research before hand.
@@tessearle4828 why not just the usual 10 minutes?
Golden Harvest jars are made by Ball, if you can find them they are cheaper, but it’s still hit or miss finding canning supplies.
Can I ask, how many pounds of carrots did you cut up? And how many jars did you get? Also these lids, you reused from the pasta sauce, correct?
Yes sauce jars I don't how much carrots I used I cut up and fill jars as I go, I can get 10 of these jars in my canner
Hello from your new subscriber :) are you an aussie by any chance ? im in Queensland , just wondering because im finding it difficult to get ball jars as well , Have you heard of fowler jars ?
Hi Kerry yes I am an Aussie I live in Adelaide we too have trouble finding jars here, I have heard of fowler jars not seen them here either. Thanks for watching and subscribing I will subscribe to your channel as well.

@@kerry1963qld Are any of your family heading north? I've got ball jars if you want them.
Can i toss prepared carrots in a little butter before I place in jars?
I haven't added butter before as I like the flavour of the liquid from the carrots.
Is water bath canning done the same way?
What pasta sauce are these jars from, please?
Good for u...I say the. Same darn thing...my kitchen my rules 😋 😜
Great content 👌 😊
Can you dry can winter squash?
I haven't tried it
Hi Tess, thank you where is your accent from.
Hi I was born in Australia, Italian parents and was married to an English man
I wonder what the shelf life is on dry canned foods?
It interesting.
Less time consuming.
how long for Quart jars?
Other than they taste like mush when they’ve boiled
@@janetbillingsley950 Taste is so overrated? :)
Very nice. Thank you!
Your welcome
If the texture is still soft why not follow the safer method with water?
It's safe, tests were done with dry canned potatoes and results were the same as the ones canned in water. Have a nice day
Thank you. 😎👍🏻
Your welcome
Tess, have you tried Tattler Reusable Lids?
No I like lug lids
Have you ever dry canned squash or zucchini? I am hoping to find someone who has had success with this.
No sorry
How do you water bath carrots, please
What do carrots look like a year later?
I have used jars like this before and then you hear don't use them. I used some for jelly. I am going to try with carrots. I plant in kids swimming pools. I am soon to be 81. I have 3 of red beets and 1 with parsnips and 1 with carrots. I got them in late so I pray I will have some. I was wondering can you do red beets like this?
I pickle beets, I have used these jars for years I prefer these lids
I typically dehydrate my carrots but I'd like to try your method here.
Also, do you know if this recipe would work using persimmons?
Thank you very much. 😊
I think persimmons would be to mushy, I have freeze dried my persimmons or you can dehydrate them. Thanks for watching
I have found a place online where you can buy new lug lids, I reuse jars of all kinds and lids.
