The problem was Julie Covington turned it down because she wanted to be considered a ‘serious actress’. She did consider playing the role a few years later in Australia (in fact, there was excitement about her playing the role on stage, as she had actually been announced). She pulled out, however, for whatever reason (the rumour being she couldn’t sing the role live and certainly wouldn’t be able to sustain a run). She was quickly replaced with Stephanie Lawrence if I remember correctly. I think Tim Rice had concerns about her sustaining a live performance when she was first offered the role in the seventies. Her recorded version of Evita is very accomplished (despite the dated orchestrations), but it may have sounded quite different live, thus blemishing her association with the role. Who knows?

It became just as loved to me as the hit song- and Julie Covington will always be the voice of Eva Peron to me. An edge to the voice that suited the complexity of the character. "Evita" was the first big show I saw in 1979 in Adelaide and it started me on my love affair with the big musical.
Julie Covington is the original Evita for me too. Great voice. Highflying adored, Another Suitcase and Dont Cry for me. Elaine Page and far less Madonna do not come anywhere near her. Real pity she did not pursue her career. Even her version of In my life is jsuperb.
In my oppinion it's the best version of the song... I listened to the other ones, but they don't come near this one here. It's a bit sad that people forget that this here is the "Original" version from 1976...

@Bdawg9891 -- This is part of the original project recording (with Julie Covington singing) before it was performed on stage. From what I've read, Ms. Covington elected not to perform/sing as Evita on stage, hence the part was open and Elaine Paige got the part.
I agree this is the best version - usually Elaine Paige is amazing but even she can't sing this as well as Julie Covington does. The only other I have heard that is as good as this is Mandy Gonzalez; bearing in mind that she is playing when she sings it, she is pretty amazing. Julie was never in any production of Evita. Julie was used for the concept album. Webber had great success with JCST as a concept album that he did the same with Evita. Elaine Paige was in the original London cast and Patti was in the original broadway production.

I bought the CD back in the '80s. Covington's performance is my favorite -- very gritty and exciting.
