  • High school volleyball, basketball, and track and field athlete tells about her recovery from ACL surgery. Video demonstrating activities performed to get her back on the volleyball court after 15 weeks of Physical Therapy with Dr. Lyneil Mitchell, DPT. Patella Tendon Autograft ACL reconstruction performed by Josh Szabo M.D. of Tri Rivers Orthopedics in Pittsburgh, PA.
    Dr. Lyneil has had unique experiences in his education and career that have allowed him to become a top rehab expert, especially with ACL rehabilitation.
    He was trained under Bob Mangine who wrote the initial ACL rehab protocols. Here he learned the importance of EVALUATION BASED PROTOCOLS vs. time based protocols.
    This allows for each individual to progress at the most appropriate pace based on their individual progress, not just arbitrarily doing certain things at week 4 and week 6 and week 12 like generic time based protocols.

    As always, we are here to be a resource for all things physical therapy, fitness and health!
    Please ask us any questions you might have in the comments and leave feedback for any information you would like us to provide in the future.
    If you are recovering from an ACL injury or surgery Dr. Lyneil is available to provide consultation and both virtual and in person physical therapy.
    If you want to rehab to 100% or better without going through generic, short-sited, typical rehab process, reach out to Dr. Lyneil and the FyzioGym!

    I'm at 1 1/2 weeks today from acl hamstring harvested reconstruction. everyone needs to understand that not everyone heals at the same speed .that being said I did my research prior to my surgery and made my own physio plan based on all the info I compiled. Day one I would lay with my leg near hypertension. And do as much as I could in terms of my exercises. The swelling made it harder but just keep working through the pain .at this point swelling is almost all gone which means I can turn it up on my physio . Progress full extention, 80 to 85 degree bend unassisted ( no towel ) .working on my friends all these comments have helped me so much .

    Do you think I would be able to perform in a police academy 3months post op from acl reconstruction? I started walking 7 days post op I think with intense therapy and cycling everyday I would be ready for an academy by October today is exactly one month since op.

    I'm confused by this video, I went through therapy before for an ACL cadaver graft (failed inside knee brace) and just got a patella graft done. My first time through therapy they never let me use any type of knee brace while at the office (same with my friends) I'm just wondering why she has a knee brace on when I thought therapy was supposed to help with not only the strengthening of the muscle but also increasing stability inside the knee and wearing a knee brace kind of negates that?

    I have a question... I tore my acl and had a little tore in my meniscus. I have been operated for almost a year now. I went back to training, running, cycling and swimming, but I still keep having front and back knee pain and sometimes I feel like they are locked. Is it normal? and what can I do to make the pain gone and is it still safe for me to go back playing english football?

    • @vipieee5651
      @vipieee5651 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The locked part is probably because of the meniscus

    Hello, I am a 21 year old athlete. I am 6'2 182lb and I play basketball and golf competitively across the south east of the U.S. I tore my ACL back in late march and finally had surgery in late may. I am 8 weeks post op. I go to physical therapy 3 times a week as my doctor ordered. I have read and been told by my doctor and PT that you are not suppose to be running or jumping until around week 12 post op. I just want to ask and make sure im doing all I can do. Is going to PT 3 times a week ( 1 hour sessions) enough for me considering I am young and athletic and I want to get back to sports at the same high level I was previously. I heard you can overwork your ACL and put yourself at more risk to tear during recovery if you work out too much. What are some good exercises i can do at home and how often should i do them? Please respond if you read this, i am subbing and thank you!

    I'm scheduled to have surgery in about 2 and a half weeks on July 21st. I'm an incoming college freshman trying to play volleyball and basketball which I played in high school. I've never had surgery before and I'm just fearful of not coming out of surgery the same way before I got hurt. Please give me some advice on whatever it is you can share, whether it may be the pain process after surgery, the rehab or returning fully to sports. anything will be appreciated. I just don't want to be scared of reinjuring myself and always wondering about my knee.

      Janaya Walker Perform Pre op Exercises before you go in to surgery, this will aid in the post op healing process. Once you come out of surgery be strict and consistent with your rehabilitation, have faith in your Therapists and trainers and in your body's natural healing power. You will return to full health and strength and possibly even stronger but its up to you and how strict you stay to your rehab exercises. Listen to the professionals involved. You will be fine just take it one day at a time and dont rush the process, be patient but be strict. All the best with your surgery :)

      Do you wear a brace? The brace will increase confidence a bit and will help you build strength in the leg to support knee recovery. Are you in a physical therapy program? This will make sure you balancing the exercises to increase strength in the leg.. Good luck..

    Hi.. I was diagnosed with grade 1 ACL injury in August.. initially I was under the treatment of orthopedic surgeon..he used to give me medicines only and didn't suggested physiotherapy.. I took medicines for 2 months but there was no relief so I quit medicines and switched to physiotherapy. When I was on regular physiotherapy I started feeling better but now when I am taking physiotherapy sessions on alternate days my knees are paining. My physiotherapist is asking me to join gym and start strengthening exercises , cycling n all.. but since I still have pain in my knees ,I don't have that confidence to join the gym.. as I am scared of making the situation worse.. please help me out..

    • @GeorgeKershawBMX
      @GeorgeKershawBMX 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rugbyfan101 Extension is pretty goodm it can hyper extend so that's no problem. Flextion is pretty much the same, but there is underlying problems.. I can no longer hop on one leg. Imagine a broken spring, that's what my knee is. It's a nightmare! Going to go back to physio this week and try and get another MRI scan done.

      As mentioned in one of my previous comments I went to see my physio again, he was concerned about the turn my knee has taken so am booked in to see my consultant on May 20th and getting an MRI done shortly after, it really sucks because I was working so hard on it prior to this.
      Maybe I could email you to get some advice instead? Thank you so much.

    Hi,
    What kind of a brace is that?
    Thanks

  • @clintw6823
    @clintw6823 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's not about how well your knee is strengthened that can be done within a few months the fact is the new tendon has to not heal but regenerate meaning new blood vessels etc...need to grow within the graft and that's what takes time period it's not the strengthening etc...of the knee it's all about the graft taking 9 to 12 months starting from nothing basically our body is amazing in how it will grow nerves, blood vessels etc...into the new graft and until that happens fully it's just not wise to put it into jeopardy...My Dr..was the team physician for the University of Michigan Football and Hockey team and his office is also the U.S ski teams place they go for injuries so I'll trust what he has experienced and will return to the activity levels he recommends!!!

    I need help. I'm 3 weeks out from my ACL surgery and I'm having a hard time getting full extension. Is this normal? How can I work on getting it straight? I'm just getting started on physiotherapy because I just got my referral from the doctor. I can walk but I'm just having hard time to get full extension, around 10 degrees from getting a 0˚ straight leg.

    • @blakesmith5526

      I had surgery on my acl and meniscus almost three weeks ago. The main thing to understand is the importance of therapy, I am ahead of schedule because of therapy. Do what they tell you to do at home and slowly but surely you will recover. Best of luck to you.

    • @lachlanwright5489
      @lachlanwright5489 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate I'm now 3 months post acl surgery. And all I can say is make sure you do your rehab. Try rolling up a towel and placing it under your ankle and then straighten your leg by squeezing your quad muscle. It will hurt for ages but keep persisting and working with a physio and you will be on your feet soon. It took me about 3 weeks to walk and I still have a limp and I'm at 3 months so don't aorry

    • @neettim
      @neettim 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lachlan Wright wait so are you still working on getting it straight or were you able to get it straight despite being already 3 months post op? I'm not 6 weeks post op and I'm still 15˚ short of a straight leg. Currently doing physio atm

    • @lachlanwright5489
      @lachlanwright5489 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It took me about 7 to 8 weeks before I could fully straighten and bend it. So keep working,
      It sounds like yours needs a fair bit of work because I was close by the 5 to 6 week mark, I'm just working on quad and hamstring strength now. Hopefully running in a couple of weeks. Are you seeing a physio?

    • @neettim
      @neettim 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lachlan Wright Yes I currently am, and I'm also doing better in my straightening. I'm about 7˚ short now of 0˚. I'm also doing quad and hamstring strengthening to help pull my lower leg up to get extension.

    Im getting acl surgery next week with a Hamstring graft. But i fear it will leave my strong hamstrings weaker forever which is holding my knee stable atm as im able to run and stuff without an acl. Should i switch to patella. I do lots of athletics im 20

    • @Veneros
      @Veneros 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ANGRYGREEKMANYO
      @ANGRYGREEKMANYO 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bro! Switched the patella! Because the hamstring is what keeps your Shinbone from going forward and prevents future acl injuries. Listen.... I had some burning on my knee in week one.... But after Exactly 2 weeks!! I could walk!!! no crutches. no knee pain no swelling! BUT! They want me to use one crutch in the meantime. I Feel great. I can bend my knee more than 90 degrees and full extension which is important! Id get patella bro!!! If you do your rehab Im sure you will not have any issues with patella. It is also a strong graft! You want your hamstrings strong forever bro

    • @ANGRYGREEKMANYO
      @ANGRYGREEKMANYO 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and only had burning in my knee when i was doing flexion exercises.. Otherwise wasnt even a problem .Only happened for one day lol. I can even squat if i hold onto my sink. Dont worry it nothin serious

    • @ANGRYGREEKMANYO
      @ANGRYGREEKMANYO 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another final thing. The reason you feel okish now is because your hamstring is keeping your knee stable and is doing a great job. Why kill off parts of your hamstring that helps so much?

    • @Toquelibre
      @Toquelibre 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ANGRYGREEKMANYO How is your recovery? Did you end up with Hamstring or Patella harvest? I'm also going to need surgery but still trying to decide what's the best option. I have a friend who is a doctor that recommended me doing a Cadaver harvest based on my age and quicker recovery.

    What is your reason to do the exercises on socks?

    • @TheStrongAngle
      @TheStrongAngle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rik mandemakers rather do barefoot but some people dont like to. helps with proprioception, foot strength and reacction time.

      In terms of safety i would not do this on socks with my patients, especially not early in rehab

      rikm1989 I actually injured my ACL slipping on slick flooring while wearing socks. Doctor says he isn't sure if I need surgery. But if given the option I'm going to because my instability has become infuriating to deal with daily.

    at what stage did she begin jogging?

    • @TheStrongAngle
      @TheStrongAngle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We work on running mechanics. We really do not use jogging as an activity. Skilled footwork, agility and running mechanics drills with low level plyometrics. We started this approximately 8 weeks.

      +Michael McConnaughhay even if she did, 16 weeks is not enough time. Studies show AT least 9 months has the best results.

    • @michaelmcconnaughhay3541
      @michaelmcconnaughhay3541 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually 4 to 9 months is what I have seen. 4 is still quickly, but I have had some success at 4 months. Most of my athletes are 6-8 months.

    • @blondecaveman9100
      @blondecaveman9100 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael McConnaughhay yep I agree with you. I wouldn't advice anyone one no matter how fast their recovery might seem to resume training after only 4 motnhs. The op benefits the rest of their life why not wait another few months!!

      NOOOOoooo. I had a 2.4 GPA and had to take a 5th year in highschool. In highschool I just wasn't focused and didnt do well in sciences. Your whole mentality will change if youre pursuing something you want. Put your mind to it. Read into it early, get interested, and put yourself out there. I got a job as a therapist aide and have been studying on my own to really be able to help people both recover and improve. Ive started towards my degree as a Phys Therapist Assistant and got a certification to be a personal trainer on the side. Make your goals, surround yourself with the information and environment that will help you achieve them, and put in the hours. So far, its really been worth it for me. Good luck! Start now

    With all due respect but this is just ridiculous, as pointed out in some of the other reactions, the graft takes about 3 months before it starts the vascularization process, which means it will be at it's weakest point at that time.
    There's speedy recovery and there's taking a huge risk, this is certainly the latter.

    • @TheStrongAngle
      @TheStrongAngle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally understand. it happened. true story. was scary. sometimes you have to take risks. sometimes you can't take the conservative approach. for abbie and her family, it wasn't an option.
      she is playing division 1 volleyball and killing it. this girl is not your typical athlete. she is exceptional and this story is here to show that.

    TBH why is she in brace already guys avoids knee braces as long as possible only wear them during games not during practice and therapy build better mechanics while getting used what's it's like and going to be like without it. Her form isnt that great either but I mean what ever. Her knees come to far forward, and hips are weak as well as quads

    15 weeks off of a Patellar graph and they return to sports? Im calling BS. Thr Andrews institute is by far one of the best in the country and they wouldnt allow an athlete to return at 15 weeks from a patellar graph. Im canlling major bullshit.
