You released this recording in the same day my ex broke up with. It was like god resting his hand on my shoulder and saying: "ok, Cry. child. I´m here"
Totally angelic playing. And how obvious the pleasure he takes in playing. No cheating there. Impossible. Pure elation from player to listener, and like a gift from the inspired composer.
Sitting in an empty house, staring out the window where the sun is shining. Thinking of my piano back home, the place miles from where I am. I want to run my hands across the keys and play my favorite pieces, but I can't. Instead, I'm stuck in this house which is not mine, stuck in this place that lacks familiarity. I wonder how my piano is doing, and why I seem to personifying the beautiful instrument. I reminiscence upon the past, hopelessly attempting difficult pieces while laughing brightly, and feel the emptiness. I miss my piano. I miss its beautiful sounds, its familiar touch. I miss the music that I can play on it, the one piece that had calmed me down that day as I rushed into the house emotionally and sat down at the piano, staying there for three hours. I miss my delicate instrument that had accompanied me throughout my childhood. I miss my piano as I never had before. I tell myself I have no time to think of home, and get up to go do something efficient with my time, the piano lingering in the shadows of my thoughts.
@@Anand-jk7gs exactly I actually quit piano last year, waited an entire summer, and then had to restart it again. Before that I thought I didn't like piano, that music was just something my parents made me do, but after that I realized just how much I love music, and how much I love playing the piano.
As of about a year ago I started playing classical guitar. Now I play every day, and every time I do I play something by Bach. This is one of the pieces I know. It’s so beautiful. I’m at the stage now where I’m trying to research the pieces I play carefully, listening to lots of different interpretations and especially listening to performances on instruments other than the guitar. This performance has given me so many ideas about phrasing. Thank you, Mr. Chen!
Same I practice of mostly Bach on guitar and listening on original instrument is invaluable. Especially with such amazing musicians as Mr. Chen, whom I"m glad to have found here.
I came across this work by Bach quite by accident. I was looking for a nice Requiem and found Barbara Hannigan with Mozart's Requiem on Arte Concert. Immediately before the Requiem there was a performance of this sonata by Bach. She fascinated me. Then I looked for other performances of this sonata and found this one. This caught me immediately. I think your interpretation is beautiful. You breathe sooo much feeling into the notes in one go. At key points, your facial expression helps me to understand what Bach might be trying to tell us. One of those places is at 1:00 where you chuckle a little, you'll know why. There are mountains and valleys in the expression and one valley is at 2:40, I think Bach chose it well. At 2:58 I felt like the sonata would end at any moment. Wrong, what was probably the most beautiful section of the sonata then followed. Masterly your interpretation, masterly the Stradivarius, together simply MEGA! MANY THANKS
Ray! This is so comforting to hear! I just started playing the violin (I played viola first for several years). I am working on this piece and to see your range of emotion feels like homemade chicken soup (with turmeric and fresh ginger). I'm a trauma survivor, POC, recovering addict, and queer. This music describes my will to survive and show the world the beauty and generosity I have to offer. I can smile today and hold my head high.
As Bach himself noted the spiritual reverence in his works should be always present....and we have heard here a most evocative example of similar musical understanding... A wonderful serenity and peaceful worshipping of our artistical human nature.... Most grateful for sharing his vision with us.... Have a nice day everyone.... ☮️
Aaaand now I've gone and bought a violin and I'm determined to learn. Thanks for being inspirational! I used to practice my flute a couple hours a day for years but haven't seriously played any gigs since before the pandemic. I love your musicality! 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you, Ray, that was marvelous. There is something about Bach which is beyond imagining. There is always something more to find, something that is just out of reach. It is somehow part of the cosmos and yet also very much of the here and now. Miraculous really.
Such a beautiful interpretation - makes me sense a glimmer of hope and peace in these times. Thank you so much for dedicating so much time to recording this wonderful album for us during quarantine!
Ray post this on his instagram to commemorate all front-liner and all affected when the pandemic started on March 2020. Until now when I hear this tune give me shivers and tears thinking how hard that time we live during Covid-19 era. This tune seems to give us hope to live on. Thank you Ray.

I'm watching this on a 21:9 screen, but since boomer Ray :P has uploaded this in a 16:9 format, even though this is a purely 21:9 video i now got to look at black bars from all sides making you appear quite small in my screen. Could you in the future try to upload 21:9 videos in 21:9 format. Then youtube can stretch it over my whole screen making it look very cinematic and way less boxed/lettered in. :))

The sound of this violin is exquisite. Chen makes the instrument sing, and every note is perfection. I believe he's playing a Stradivarius.
Yes he plays strad.
Have been paying attention to Ray’s finger😂 He definitely got beautiful hands and perfect fingers for the 🎻
