I was trying to learn 2nd position and I stumbled onto the Circle of Fifths. Game changer. My whole world around music just blew my mind with the Circle of Fifths. Really, students getting into band or something like that, learn the basics, but after that, learn the Circle of Fifths.

On his long "East West" quasi Indian jam, Paul Butterfield played a great solo in third position. If you add the major 2nd and the major 6th that gives you the dorian mode, which what he used on that cut. Side note: Butterfield was definitely leaning in more of a jazz direction before his tragic early death. Had he lived, he might have gotten into overblows before Howard Levy arrived on the scene.

I do overblows on 6 while lip pursing but am unable to do it while tongue blocking. Do you do it tongue blocking? I'm actually just learning tongue blocking.

Yeah, I do. I’m not sure if it’s harder or not, but I figured it out eventually. Reed setup matters more than perfect technique
