Dope Lesson as alwayd. There's something that must be said about the BDP beef with Shan. Shan was alone as far as the JUICE Crew not stepping in but folks forget NOEL ROCKWELL AND MC POET from Queensbridge. Poet dissed BDP hard during the beef with two records: "Beat You Down" and this other record called "Taking You Out.(under the name "Fedz " ) Look it up. Those joints hit hard. Mr. Magic used to play those records hard.

This is BY FAR the most entertaining and educational interview you have ever done....No disrespect to Melle.....I was in the south so MC Shan was noteworthy; at the same time we (Georgia) had MC Shy D with the same vocal range and New York style so he kinda blocked MC Shan from our view, so MY circle studied Rakim, Kane, G.Rap, KRS-ONE, Slick Rick and Chuck D. I hate how he went under my radar!! I would have loved Shan but by the time the Juice Crew hit my ears I was a Rakim/Kane disciple.....then I latched on to KRS-ONE and had to go back to hear the Shan beef which I felt like the Jamaican patois and Reggae cadence's from Kris were to NEW for him to lose that "battle". I missed the brilliance of the ICON MC Shan.

MC Shy D ..yea..I heard him after the album dropped ..gotta be tough ..! MC Shan & others kinda disappeared for us here in SC ..we didn't have hip-hop radio like stretch armstrong or Marley..NY tapes might make it down to my area then

Another great interview JayQuan! That was a great compliment M.C. Shan gave you at 2:50 when he said that your documentary lesson based on his life was so accurate, it was almost as if you were there "with him" back in the day. It doesn't get better than that!

Dawg....This is better than anything on TV. I appreciate these interviews. Back in my young days I was obsessed with the Juice Crew, Marley, the Bridge wars. Of course information was limited back then and all I had to read was the record labels. Especially living 1,500 miles away in Dallas, TX. I was a young DJ and just like you reading all the producer credits and names on the labels and had the same questions, especially the ones about when they were on Pop Art. I didn't think I would ever have those questions answered. I can't get enough of these interviews and lessons. Keep doing your thing.

I always enjoy listening to Shan -- he sorta reminds me of Melle Mel, he never bites his tongue and he says what's on his mind.
I think the people's perception of his bout with KRS has caused them to not truly appreciate his contribution to the art form. It's almost as if they've written him out of history.

MC Shan recording from 1985 to ......
MC Shan is one of the most underated Poetic MC's of all times ... My nick name for him is Mr First .He was the first to do a smooth flow minus the screaming when he first appeared on the records called Marly Scratch and Cuts So Fresh in 1985. MC Shan was also the first MC to diss LL Cool J on "Beat Biter". To which Def jam ordered LL Cool J not to respond. He was the first to make a diss record calling the opposition by the actual name in his diss record against LL Cool J . He was almost unarguably the first to drop lyrics inspired from the lessons of the five percent nation, this is displayed in the rhymes, he did against L Cool J on his record called Beat Biter. He was the first to make a classic hip hop love blues ballad in "Left Me Lonely ". He was the first to metaphor a drug into a woman in Classic stand alone single "Cocaine" 1986. He was first to make a bonafide classic hit single with a song for his hood in the "Bridge" . He was the first to rock a particular type of multi syllabic flow while taking Hip Hop to Syfy on the single " MC Space" off the Down By Law album .
Shan was also the first to do a great hip hop anthem in the song called "Living In The World of Hip Hop ".
On his second album He was the first to verbally make a record scratch style with his word in the middle of his flow in the song "Words To My Freestyle". The first Prince of Rap who didn't have to scream his lyrics on record. He is Mr First....

MC Shan and Marley Marl is the reason I married hip hop with no divorce in sight. Shan is a foundation piece of hip hop.
