  • Around Verdun, in 1916, 60 million shells were launched by the Germans and French in just 10 months. It is believed 1 on 10 (six million), failed to go off and the ground is littered with them, with the clearing up still going on over 100 years later. It seems this will be going on for more than 100+ years to come. And why this land will probably never be turned back into farmland, with the lost men and munitions lying beneath its soil still today.
