In Super Mario 64, you need to collect all the stars within the Castle Walls to save Princess Peach. However, That's not what this song's about.
A few months back there were a bunch of fan-made videos going around of this fictional Beta 'Super Mario 64' build. It's said to contain AI that personalises the game to appeal to you on a subconscious level. In rare cases it was a danger to the player's health, causing strokes, headaches and even death in some cases. This fits perfectly into the "Edgy video game villain sings to the viewer" style I love to write in, so I just had to give it a go!
This was originally meant to be finished in July, but a few things didn't go to plan and I had to put the project to the side for a bit. Although the song's topic is no longer relevant by TH-cam's standards, the Algorithm should hopefully be happy about me releasing a Mario related video shortly after the release of 3D All stars. Taking my sweet time might actually pay off! Special thanks to APAngryPiggy for singing in this track, I had a ton of fun editing his recordings to sound robotic and creepy. I love how the song comes to focus on the "Eternal Star" statue, implying that it was the playable Luigi mystery in Mario 64 that started it all.
I like how you don't even notice the screen getting closer and enveloping the entire video, which gives off the vibe of being so focused on the game and AI that you don't notice anything else outside of it
Plus, the lines of the TV disappear too. You truly get pulled in, so much that the lines truly cease to exist, instead of simply being tuned out. But we don't even notice.
It's 1995. The people at Nintendo scramble, their game is half finished, and the playtesters didn't even enjoy it. There's no way it will release on time, and even less chance it will be a hit. But one clever employee steps in the room with an idea that changes everything, a new copy of the game that warps and changes to the users liking, until they have the perfect game. And at that point they can just lock it in that state, it's perfect. And so a few lucky playtesters get to try, and it works well. One spends hours staring at the view from bombomb battlefield, The colors get more saturated, the castle gains windows, the backgrounds become larger, it's his perfect game. Another spends his days trying to break the game, making new challenges for himself. The game becomes much harder, every level like tick tock clock. And still one more playtester is the perfect player, he plays as any child would. And his copy is locked, manufactured, and sent around the world. Until one day, in the summer of 2020, a kid familiar with high quality games like COD, or Zelda TOK pulls out his old Wii U, dusts it off, and gives Mario 64 a try. The graphics and movement aren't as good as he remember. "This game sucks". The sentence echo's across the room, and into the gamepad microphone. The game isn't perfect. The lock, is removed.

Honestly, the lyrics are so good. It alone defies the AI as a whole developed character in this creepypasta song. The verse “Redemption’s what we earned” was the one that got to me the most. At first, I didn’t understand what it meant, but now I think I do.
I think this verse represents the AI justifying the trauma it’s caused to others who played a personalized version of Super Mario 64. It is a literal embodiment of a game that is loved by thousands if not millions. And it also sometimes gives people new experiences through its ability to personalize each copy of SM64, adding new characters, secrets, different stages, and endings found in no other copy.
All these little traits hides it’s sinister deeds, such as creating dangerous anomalies like the hostile Wario Apparition and along with others, potentially traumatizing and mentally injuring people who played it. But it thinks that it’s okay to sometimes play it’s little games. Because through its perspective, being the experience that is SM64 instantly REDEEMS itself from any crime against reality it committed and will commit in the future.
The AI, basically has the same mindset as Flowey, then.

@@evagarcia865 Yeah, everybodys played Salty, Salty Shores and Pleasant, Pleasant Falls. We all know these levels but this is just to seem mysterious and say what if other levels existed. Like imagine one like, well idk, Bob-omb Battlefield or something like that. A made-up level to seem like there's something changing the game, thats based on how nostalgia changes our memories, taken to the extreme.

Honestly, I could see some of this Iceberg stuff being illusions conjured by King Boo, to mess with Mario’s head. When he saved the day anyway, the royal ghost got fed up and planned to stuff him in a painting of his own. King Boo has been called a master of illusions, and this would lead into Luigi’s Mansion.

Well its the personalization AI singing to the player, this isnt marios business, afterall hes just another character in the game.
It's true, the only character present in the song is Lakitu, and he only stays from the beginning and then appears at the end
This song definitely gives me the same feel of the first FNAF, song where there basically singing to and telling you that you made a big mistake by looking into something that has been abandoned, and that is a threat to your life of course the animatronics, in the case of FNAF, and in the case of Mario 64, the headaches, and the strokes Mario 64, can give you do to personalization, but i am glad this is about the AI, and not just the Wario Apparition, because admittedly that would have been cheesy despite how much i love the Wario Apparition, but the song itself is a banger great job on this guys!.

I cant quite describe how this video makes me feel. The music is strangely unsettling yet calming at the same time, the lyrics are vague but clearly theres some sort of story. And as for the visuals, despite how many times I've played sm64, the visuals are so foreign to me, it just dosent feel right how empty it is. The best way I can describe this video is some sort of strange nostalgic purgatory.
How do people not know about this song? This is early DAGames level with a modern feel. The lyrics are haunting and the visuals are fun. The chorus does need a little more variety in notes, but otherwise, this is amazing. I’m saving this to my Apple Music and subbing. Hoping for more of this stuff! Keep up the great work!
Personally I'd compare this more to TLT while Knives, Gears and Wires more so feels like a DAGames thing.

This song has some nostalgia aura that i cannot comprehend. It sounds like an outro to a "good ending but at what cost?" type of movie. The melody sounds so nostalgic for some reason, it makes me cry everytime i hear this song.

This is the most creative 95 build video I’ve ever seen. Most videos try too hard to be spooky or funny with “eVeRy CoPy iS pErSoNaLiZeD” and “durrr Wario” but this really does feel different. Awesome job!!

From the tone that lyrics gives off and what its saying it feels like Bowser is the one singing. I mean, "castle of mine", "world of mine" and he's always watching.

The Instrumental really sells the creepypasta vibe. It's cheery, but empty.... Like something you'd hear in a liminal space. And the lyrics are so good that they could fit any of the multiple analog horror SM64 series while still being original. Great Work!❤

Yeah same here, though i am just a sucker for low poly graphics mainly because of the uncanny valley nature they have to the, and i will be honest the carts artwork is a little nightmare fuel for me like Bowser, running after Mario, in a seemingly endless field is just really creepy to me it probably wouldn’t be if Peach’s castle was behind them.

I wanted to use the soundfont originally but didn’t want to risk any copyright issues from distributing a song with samples Nintendo owns, so I opted for some instruments that sound similar.

Big Boo’s Haunt, is a legit horror level, even before the whole personalized thing i was scared of it as a kid since i had the DS version so i still got childhood trauma of Mario 64, though not nearly as bad as others have been through though.
