- The Schrade Bolo Machete is a full tang, stainless steel, bolo style machete that really packs a punch. It comes with a diamond sharpening stone and a fire steel for fire starting.

Tip for the sheath, use the shoulder strap around your waist while you use the log straps and the machete sits on your leg alot better!
Twice as knackered as usual matey.. Damn that wobbly mic!!
UK loves ya!
lol good recovery with the intro song. it's a good song! ;-)
joe reardon Thanks Joe. I keep saying I'm gonna flesh it out a little and record a longer version but I never seem to find time.
Schrade is a great company with great products! I have wanted one of these for a while! Great Review brother!
California Prepper Thanks! I agree about Schrade. And especially about this blade. It is fast becoming one of my favorites.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose are they still like this?
First of all good review Bryan. With your sheath issues it's not just you when mine is on my back it goes in all directions to it might just be the way it's made.
6:19 my favourite part of the video
Resembles a crkt chanceinhell with out the blade coating which I have, looks like another shrade is joining the family..great review as usual Bryan, thanks
tom a Thanks Tom. Honestly, I was a little doubtful I would like this. It just didn't look "graceful" to me. That all changed as soon as I buried it in a piece of wood the first swing. It is a really functional design. Really well balanced too ;-)
Good review. Looks like it would be perfect to strap to a pack or clearing blackberry limbs and fields of fire on a hunting trip. Nice work!
Thanks for watching.
I agree about the sheath, they should have put thment point at the top of the sheath to make it hang properly.
Greyman Zink I think they might be changing the sheath next year. Lt Survival said he thinks he heard Chris from PreparedMind101 say that. How's that for unconfirmed third hand information? ;-)
very good job telling us about this machete. I bought own for my bush use
Thanks
i trust your reviews i watch your review your my go too for review befor i buy blades and outdoor tools
Is the strap long enough to possibly be used as a double wrap belt? As in some sword scabbards? Then the leg straps might make sense as well.
Jeff Holmes Maybe. I'm still working with the sheath to see if I can figure out how it is intended to be carried. - Bryan
Good review as usual Bryan. I like it. I think it would be ideal lashed to the bottom of a day or back pack while trekking afield. I can see by your demonstration that carrying it on your body would be a lesson in futility.
John Hufnagel Thanks John. I havet o admit that after I finished this video I started thinking that maybe carrying the Bolo upside down was how the sheath is intended to be used and that might not be such a bad idea. I'll play around with it some more and probably do a follow up video on this one because I really like this blade. - Bryan
I think that the shoulder strap should be tight along the body with the knife either on the back or the chest.
That back/ Shoulder strap is a pain .
Took a while to figure it out .
I think I got it right now using the adjustable strap ( for some reason yours did not look adjustable).
Either way - it is over my shoulder , resting nice on my back , but there is still no way for quick deployment if needed .
I can’t figure it out !!
Anyway - Awesome blade though !!
Thanks !
Great review again, i think the sheet are going to be modifiée next year. Can't remember where i Heared it might be PM101 with the other machette. Still his a great product. I am a machette over axe guy and for me they do à lot with less effort then using an axe. I find it safer also, when you know how to use them. Atb Louis
Lt Survival Yeah, Chris at PM101 is working pretty closely with Schrade so he would know. He even has a knife design in the works with them. Pretty cool.
I think if the carry strap is connect with both clips at the top end carry may be more accessible.
Maybe
Please do a gerber gator machete review?! I am contemplating purchasing one and it seems like a good deal, a friend of mine has one but I want your opinion. A great video btw
it is a actually a barong and stainless steel is best for its jungle use where high humidity tend to corrode high carbon knives
All righty then ;-)
I know your mic cut out, but when carrying handle down if you were to tighten up the strap, does it still have a tendency to rotate down?
Also, when trying to make feather sticks with big blades, stab it into a log and while supporting it by the handle (so it doesn't lean/pull out), draw the wood across the edge, rather then the traditional way you use with smaller blades. Hope that makes sense, if not I could do a quick video.
***** Not sure about the strap, still playing with it. As for the feather stick technique you mention, it sounds like a good idea but I think it requires a lot more skill than the "normal" method, or at least a lot of practice doing it that way. Which means it is probably a good idea to practice that because it could also be a way to make a feather stick one handed if you get good at it. Thanks for the tip.
Survival On Purpose
It takes a little practice but I don't think you'll find it that difficult. If you have the knife stabbed deep enough and nice and secure, it makes it a lot easier then if there's flex or movement in the blade (which is why I suggested supporting at the handle with big blades).
It's funny you mention using it as a one handed technique as that is the original context I learned it in. You can also draw a ferro rod across the spine in the same manor if that your only ignition score. It's a whole one hand fire technique. I learn later that it translated well to big blades too.
Thanks for sharing the video, I'm gonna have to pick up one of these big Schrade blades to try out at some point.
Great review. That shoulder carry sheath can be carried to the side of your body if you reverse the position with the handle in front of you. Also us the diamond sharpener with the fire steel. It's too heavy for the belt. Thanks.
MrEdium Pretty slick idea to use the diamond sharpener with the firesteel.
Survival On Purpose Thank You Sir.
I have never used a Machete as there has never been a need for the grassland/tropical version up here. What advantage would this have over a small forest axe or a hatchet? I do not like to baton anyways and just use an axe for everything but carving. I am not criticising the Machete I really just do not "get it" I guess?
butlersranger I'm not sure there really is an "advantage' to using a machete in the woodlands, it's really a mater of individual preference. I do think a machete seems a little more versatile, especially for smaller tasks like clearing brush or cutting saplings and limbs. Even a small hatchet is "head heavy" where a good machete is more balanced and just feels more controllable in a lot of situations, at least to me. I do have to admit I prefer an axe or hatchet for any major chopping tasks, although this machete does a pretty good job and I wouldn't feel too handicapped if I had this instead of a hatchet.
I would say for things like brambles, other thorns and things that would trip you up or just make life unpleasant and whippier wood like anything about 2 inches(4.4 cm) or under they really excel and are faster and less tiring and you dont have to be as accurate. They are just better for clearing brush really. The only place where they would be less that ideal but still be useable is you would probably need to baton to split stuff. Hope this helps.
Good review. I don't like the overall look of the Schrade Bolo machete, but it's hard to deny it's utility, especially at the price.
Shoto Kido Honestly, I don't think it has very graceful lines. But it just plain works. That's really what is important. And it is very well balanced ;-)
Survival On Purpose Yes, that balance seems especially helpful in case it should slip out of your hand and stick in a tree :)
I guess I just have slick hands.
That's a good story. I would stick to that one if I were you...lol
when i first got this knife, i hated the strap too. On the back of the sheath, atleast the newer ones, there are 2 belt loops and two leg straps. i put a caribiener on the top strap to feed my belt through and used the bottom one with a leg strap. it is heavy this way, but still fairly combfortable. i have since lashed it to the MOLLE webbing on my SOG ninja day pack and i like that alot better, but belt carry can be done.
Cool.
Thanks for the review. Very in-depth. :) - Chris
Thanks Chris. I appreciate it.
i still have mine..used it for three years now
It is a great tool
I think they expect you to use the shoulder strap as the belt, if you want to waist carry.
Trevor Hollibaugh Maybe, I'll give it a shot, although it seems pretty awkward that way. Thanks for the suggestuon. - Bryan
Nice review! What do you think is the best machete for camping purposes for $15-$50? What is the best value for woodland use? Is this it or is there something better?
I don't do "best". There are just so many variables and individual preferences. And I certainly don't have experience with everything.
I have top say I really like this one though: th-cam.com/video/Qx-OHNw8SVY/w-d-xo.html
And this one: th-cam.com/video/t538O6Wue04/w-d-xo.html
I've recently bought one and found the scabbard leaving a lot to be desired. That said, it straps to a pack nicely. If you are not carrying any other kit, perhaps you could find a comfortable way to shoulder carry but for those looking to quick draw your machete all book of eli style... grow up before you hurt yourself or someone around you. lol All zombie nonsense aside, this is a fantastic value machete and a great pairing to the survival axe under the same brand.
It isn't a sword, it's a tool. And it chops great. But, yeah, the sheath isn't fancy, just functional.
Looks like a barong bolo. Nice!
It does!
sorry about that, should read the attachment point.
which is better jetro bolo or this bolo?
Whichever one you like more. The Jethro is smaller and more of a knife. This bolo is more machete sized.
thanks
Bryan, would you agree that the belly of this beast has about the same curvature as an axe or hatchet? Good review.
I think you could (if so inclined) turn one end of that shoulder strap into a belt loop with a sturdy needle and thread. Also did you try adjusting the shoulder strap, if possible, to carry the sheath higher instead of at the hip?
05generic Yep, I think the blade curvature is very good for chopping. I am still experimenting with the sheath. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm likely going to do a follow up after a while and I'll talk about what I've learned about the sheath.
Another excellent review, as usual, Bryan. That is a beast of a blade. Although I don't know why Schrade calls it a bolo when it's actually a barong. Still, nice video. Here's a tip, though: you may want to put the specs of whatever you're reviewing in the video description, it will save you some time and effort and I think a lot of people would prefer to read the specs than to hear them. Anyways, thanks for the video, can't wait for the next one.
Nolan Carpenter Thanks Nolan. Actually, i might should do both. It seems like whenever I leave something out and put it in the description I always have questions. It's certainly worth a try, anything that will save me some time would be great. I usually have about an hour (at least) tied up per 10 minutes of video ;-)
Mine broke was a dandy though till I tried chopping some oak with it and a big hunk came out of the edge
+Dwayne Wallace ouch
That did very deep clean cuts while chopping, I'm surprised it did so well.
andy pilman Yeah, this thing is a chopping beast. I think it has something to do with the balance ;-)
Survival On Purpose yea must've been, how much do the cost
andy pilman
I just checked and they are about $38 on Amazon. Here's a shameless link that supports this channel:
survivalonpurpose.com/Schrade-Bolo-Machete
wow, not a bad price its actually pretty cheap, i might have to pick one up some time
I think you will like it. I was a little ambivalent about the blade shape at first but as soon as I started using it I liked it..a lot.
Cool
Big knifes is always good to use, I got an schade 10, The bad thing is that they are so clumpsy to carry. Therefore i almost never carry them. I want and like to have them with me but almost never do.
magnus andersson That's a good point Magnus. If I bring one with me it is usually in my pack until I get to where I'm setting up camp.
What editor do you use Bryan?
Abrahm
IMovie
Thank you Sir!
Abrahm
It's supposed to be carried upside down
that's the correct way to sling a machete - upside down ... doubles as a weapon
+Kevin Olesik I suppose so but I hope I never have to resort to that.
we hope the zombies never come ...
Ha "ambivalent"? That's being very diplomatic, I love schrade but they lost their mind with this sheath. The best way I found to carry it is by clipping one end of the strap to the top plastic ring and the other end of the strap to the top nylon loop, this lets it be carried similar to the way a Roman sword is carried (where I got the idea).
+Mt. Baldwin good idea
Blatant Tops Earth Skills knock off
*rat tail tang*
Don't care for the hollow grind on a knife that big .
Different strokes...
adjust the strap man ........................wtf?
Thanks for watching.
Always carry it straight to your hip
I think that the shoulder strap should be tight along the body with the knife either on the back or the chest.
+Sergio Weber Maybe. I just don't like it. Personal preference.
