_Love_ Dusty Springfield! A British singer who handled any genre she wanted, even Aretha Franklin acknowledged her. This song was an international hit; top 10 in US & UK! DS had a bunch of hits (ie, "I Only Want to Be with You" & "Wishin' and Hopin' ") before she came to Memphis in '68; her career continued, even collaborating with the Pet Shop Boys in the 1990s, until she passed in1999.

You can barely contain your surprise & laughter throughout this song and I LOVED it! 🤣😂🤣😂. Watching your expressions, trying to not smile, thank you for a great laugh!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂. btw: my folks who had 5 daughters in the 1960's, me being the youngest at 7 years in 1968, loved all kinds of music. They did not care for her or this song. 😂🤣. I see it as part of the culture that was desperately trying to leave the ivory soap fifties behind. Now look where we have ended up.

Ahhh, now THIS brings me back. This came out years before I was born, but I still have fond memories of it.
You see, in my late teens/early twenties I worked as a janitor/custodian at a Catholic hospital. My dad got me the job because he worked as a hospital chaplain and was liked well enough to become director of spiritual services.
For myself, I was popular with the nurses for being a hard worker, my friendly manner and good humor, and other social activities.
At some point I developed a bit of a reputation and while walking the floors one day, one of the old nurses said to me "well, well. How's it going there you son of a preacher man"
I had never heard the song before that and she told me about it.
After that, I would laugh anytime the old nurse called me that.
    Good times

Loved this song! As someone who grew up with an American southern church background it hits the nail on the head. I was 15 in 1968. There was a stereotype about PKs…Preacher’s Kids, they had a rep for someone who could get you in trouble!
In the social media era of today it would become mean and could really hurt kids, but in my day it was playful. Sometimes it was true, but not usually.
All 15 year old girls in 1968 wanted to find a Preacher’s son who would teach us stuff.
I dated the son of a missionary for awhile and oh my he could kiss! But alas, his family eventually went back to Africa.

It made it to number 10 in the US. A hit across all demographics. My age group (13), my cousin's age group ( 22), and even my parents age group loved it. It was written by a pair of songwriters, two guys, who had Aretha Franklin (daughter of a preacher man) in mind for it. Dusty ended up recording it first. Then Aretha, shortly thereafter. Great job, once again. Thank you.

Say Hey MLB, This song was an instant hit and was taken in the spirit of what I think was the original intent, a song that mildly challenged the assumption of innocent and upright behavior on the part of religious people. I don't remember any serious controversy. I recommend you listen to the studio version to hear Dusty at her best. Also, her British pop hits are fantastic. Love your reactions and mellifluous voice.

It was interesting hearing how you viewed the lyrics. I heard this song young which may have colored my views on it. I never thought that she was painting him in a bad light. It sounded more like childhood sweethearts who grew up closer and more risky then their religious parents would be okay with. I never got the impression he was sleeping around just sneaking out with her out of a desire for love and freedom. Your take was super interesting to think about. Great reaction as usual sir.

Oh Mr Boyd, this was in the 60s....free love etc. Always loved Dusty and she was certainly very popular here in the UK for some years.
People warmed to her and she was the closest we had to a soul singer. Her slow stuff is beautiful...she conveyed so much depth of feeling. Yup, Dusty was the best...💐💐😁😁

This was a hugely popular song. It was the sexual revolution! I heard it on the radio all the time when I was a child. She was all over TV singing it as well, if I remember correctly. Wikipedia says: “The single, released in late 1968 and credited as "Son-of-a Preacher Man" on UK, US and other releases, became an international hit, reaching no. 9 in the UK singles chart and no. 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 in January 1969.” They say Aretha Franklin recorded this song also (and that it was written with her in mind). It was a great song. I don’t recall anyone having a problem with it, but of course i was just a child. But it was a top 10 hit, so people must have loved it.

I don't think anyone really thought anything about it, back in the day. I never heard any fuss about it. I was 15 at the time. And you know, from that earlier, more innocent era, I just "heard it" as two young people falling in love, walking around the backyard, smooching, whispering, planning a meeting down by the pond, etc. Our minds didn't immediately run to sex in the bushes. lol!

This was a big hit when it came out. The "devout" don't buy hit records, generally. You are right of course, about Preachers and their wives not liking it, however.... in a store perhaps, or at work, even the devout might have a surprised knowing half smile on their on their face.

Another factor is that the "culture wars" hadn't started yet. While I'm sure there were those who hated the irreverent tone, the hollow cries of "our religion is being attacked by satanic forces" was not a mainstream thing.

It's amusing how every generation thinks they invented sex. The song was received very well in 1968. That's why it's being performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, not a show known for pushing the envelope beyond what the times would bear.

This song was well received. You need to remember that this was during the hippy, free love era, which I remember well. Not sure about how devoutly religious people saw it, but, let me tell you, PKs (preachers’ kids) were and are well known as being bad boys and girls.
You should react to more Dusty Springfield songs like Wishing & Hoping, You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me. Both awesome hits.

It was received well, it was number #10 on the charts for the year. You underestimate how men acted back then acted. A woman's place was in the home, A few years later Chuck Berry was singing "I want to play with my Ding-A-Ling". Bosses openly swatted or pinched butts groped ladies and you could quit if you didn't like it, but if you needed the job you had better be receptive. Aretha Franklin Does a version of Son of a preacher man on the flip side of the Call Me 45. I liked it better than the A-side Call Me. Did you ever tell a girl something untrue to get her to let you get closer to home base? I'm an angel, I never did... In fact, they wanted to go farther I did. Then again, It was usually one of her brothers I was into. Still the Angel, I didn't choose to be gay. What I did choose was never to act on my desires. But gay nonetheless.

The sixties were a time of open rebellion against the 'Establishment'. The taboos of that had permiated society up until that time were thrown out the window with the cry 'Make love not war'. The sixties were a wild ride.

Growing up in the "Bible Belt" of the southeastern US, I can attest the the least innocent children are indeed the children of preachers.... and other clergy.

I hear you. The "PKs" (preachers kids) were always some of the wildest kids. And cops kids, too.

You know what they say about P.K's (Preacher's kids.)....Some grow up to be upright...others are...a bit wild.

Along the same lines as far as young love content goes, I’d suggest Bob Seger’s “night moves” great song about summer love and what happens when fall rolls around...

Bob Seger is amazing! I think most people my age only know him from the truck commercials. That's how I found out about him.

Though it was considered slightly risque` in general, by 1968 it was only considered unacceptable by some conservative religious and political groups, as the culture in general was turning toward "free and easy" about sexual matters. It was an odd time, when traditional, conservative customs were being superceded and set aside by the general population, but hadn't yet completely succumbed to the "if it feels good do it" ethics of the mid and late seventies. It was a time of transitions in ethics, in music and art, and in sexual morality.
It was a big hit, with a few tsk-tsking about it while it climbed the charts.

I always saw this song as a fond remembrance of a woman's first love. Ain't nothing bad about that in itself. And her vocal style is sexy as....well, she sounds great.

Alway had a different perspective as you say, people always talked about the "PREACHER DAUGHTERS", so i thought this shined a little light on the "Boys" as they were not as you say INNOCENT EITHER!!! hahahah......we all are human Right!!!

AHhhhhhhh you don't really know Sir........ We preacher kids were known to be the hellions our families tried to warn people against (partly because they were speaking from experience seeing how we apparently flaunted everything they were trying to steer people away from.) Wasn't till I was older and realized that phase was my rebellion that I appreciated what they were trying to do. Loved this song and Cher's GYPSY'S TRAMPS AND THIEVES.

Wow. Completely different take. I never saw the preachers son looked bad at all. And she was obviously a willing participant. I never thought of it as you did. Maybe because I have someone in my past like that and I sure don’t think it was bad at all. Hahahaha. I enjoyed your perspective. Super fun

Preacher's kid's are notorious for being trouble. At least enough for people to joke about it.
