You’re going to do great! I have a video out tomorrow that goes over seed starting supplies and then I will have a video next week on starting the actual seeds.
I was so happy to find this video. I am also in Texas zone 8a and most of the gardeners that I see growing cut flowers are not in our zone or they’re doing it on a massive scale. I just have my home backyard garden to grow in and I love cut flowers and was looking for some direction on how I could get started growing them. Thank you so much for your video. It was exactly what I was looking for!
Gardening truly is the hobby of a lifetime, that was so well put. Zinnias always do great in my area, so I agree that those are great. I also love sunflowers. Last year I grew scabiosa for the first time and they were stunning. I was impressed with the repeat blooms that I got from them throughout the growing season and they add such a whimsical touch to flower jars. Happy growing! 😊🌱
Not a flower, but coleus is a fave. They do flower 😄, come in so many colors and leaf shapes. Great as filler and striking en mass in a vase. So easy to propagate 💚🌱
I totally agree with you. That is exactly the reasons for me starting a cut flower garden. I used to decorate my local church with fresh flowers and I needed them to last at least 5 days or more. This changed my attitude about growing flowers. By the way, I am a female not a male as the name suggests.
So this one is not a flower, but red amaranth grows beautifully here and is GORGEOUS in an arrangement! Sunflowers and vinca have done really well for me, too here. I’m going to really intersperse a lot more flowers into the raised beds this year. You give me hope that they won’t all fry in our dreadful summers. 😂. I used to grow the most gorgeous dahlias in Charleston, but they don’t do well for me here in San Antonio at all.
Thank you for making it sound easy. I’ve been growing the starter cut flowers you mentioned for years and have just decided to go all out this year with some more challenging ones. I live in Plano, TX and am so happy to have found your channel recently for hyper-local cut flower gardening techniques!
I love the idea of a cut flower garden, but always find it so hard to take away the beautiful blooms from the pollinators. If I had to pick one though it would be snapdragons. I just love a big bouquet full of them.
Snapdragons!!! Bought a big box plant, then it self seeded and I learned how to harvest the seeds. Now I have snapdragon babies all over and excited to see the results.
Snapdragons are so easy to grow. Slugs tend to leave them alone too (which is a bonus in a garden like mine). The bees love them too, so I'll leave some of the flowers for them too.
Hi, Neighbor! I'm in Cedar Hill, TX (Zone 8b). I'm a beginner. I love the idea of growing cut flowers for myself and for gifting them. I can't wait to get started. I have a 12 ft x 3 ft space that receives full sun for 6-8+ hours. Do you think it'd be more budget friendly to grow in multiple large pots, or in ground with a brick border? (We plan on moving within 5 years after my husband retires.) BIG THANK YOU for sharing all of your knowledge and tips! 🥰
Totally agree with Zinnias!! Can't get enough of them!! I grew sunflowers for the first time last year, ive got BIG plans for them this year!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Love your new shirt! I love zinnias, my favorite. Great video very helpful information and love your ideas and your enthusiasm about gardening. Just so excited for the new gardening season.
I enjoy unconventional colors of branching sunflowers, and last year I had success with snapdragons, zinnias, dahlias from seed, and I love me some lilies! This was a great video. One question, what choices would you make if you can't ensure 6-8 hours of sun? I've had some success working with yhe sun I have, but I'm pretty sure most areas I have might just max out at 5-6 hours of morning/afternoon sun. (I get one or the other.) I'm looking at some perennials that can do part sun. This will be an experimental year for those. Your videos are getting me excited for the upcoming season!!
Well now i understand!!! As a former florist, the interest is certainly natural. I am also a former floral designer, specializing in wedding bouquets. The cut flowers now make sense. Great pictures!! ⚾️
Great video! You are so relatable. Totally agree that you learn so much through failures in the garden. My favorites to grow are dahlias & gladiolus. I’m excited to try growing snapdragons from seed via winter sowing this year! Thank you for making your videos and teaching.
I was so glad to hear that you feel the same way I feel about netting and stakes!! I also grow everything clothes together so they can support each other
Thank you always for sharing your information. I live down the road from you and your experience is so helpful. I like you Love cut flowers. Which for some reason I have not added to my beds. Probably because I’m not sure where to place things. I would love for you to come and give me consultation 🤗 to get me started. I of course would pay you for your time. Thank you again for all the time you take to share.
Hi Vicki! I don’t do consults, but locate a space in your existing gardens that has full sun and start with some easy seeds like zinnias and sunflowers tucked into your beds in different areas!
Such a good teacher. I appreciate your easy way of gardening. I want to grow cut flowers this year. Well, I do have some. But more. My dahlias do well here. (Oregon). I want to add something to them. I have an unheated greenhouse house. When should I start seeds? I'm thinking February. 🤔
I’m not familiar with the Zones in Oregon but for an unheated green house, I think you can start 6-8 weeks ahead of time unless you are dealing with crazy low temps.
I like shopping for seeds at Calloways … they have Botanical Interests and Renee’s Garden. But I order most of my seeds online … I just posted a video today about how and where I buy my seeds online.
Hmm … a couple of tips, but you might already be doing these things … harvest the blooms first thing in the morning, make sure the heads are nice and strong before cutting (wiggle the stem, if the head flops around, then it is not ready to be cut), cut stems at an angle before placing in the base for optimal water consumption.
@@shesamadgardener oh thanks Amanda I’ll definitely try that, I’ve got some flowering at the moment so I’ll try that. I didn’t know that so that’s so helpful. 😊
I am a new gardener. I know nothing about growing flowers. I just brought so many flowers from baker creek. Wish me luck

Scabiosa are definitely fun and they come in so many colors!
I live in zone 9a. I love to grow sweet peas, bachelor buttons, sunflowers and YES, zinnias in the summer!
I started sweet peas for the first time this fall to overwinter … hope it works!
Not a flower, but coleus is a fave. They do flower 😄, come in so many colors and leaf shapes. Great as filler and striking en mass in a vase. So easy to propagate 💚🌱
Same! I love coleus!
Anxious to try heirloom mums thanks to you.
Wonderful! Hope you love them as much as me!
Cosmos = my FAV!
They are so ethereal!

Love amaranthus!
I grow red amaranth every year and love it for flower arrangements!

I grew up in Plano!
I love the idea of a cut flower garden, but always find it so hard to take away the beautiful blooms from the pollinators. If I had to pick one though it would be snapdragons. I just love a big bouquet full of them.
Totally understand … try picking half of the blooms … half for the pollinators and half for you!
Snapdragons!!! Bought a big box plant, then it self seeded and I learned how to harvest the seeds. Now I have snapdragon babies all over and excited to see the results.
Love it and love snaps!

Grow in both! In ground and pots! For anything that is a perennial, put it in your pots, so you can take it with you. Any annuals put in the ground!
@@shesamadgardener Ohh. Makes sense. Thanks so much for the suggestion. That's exactly what I'll do! 😃
You are wonderful Amanda, i love all your videos! I learn so much every time.
Thank you so much!

My mom gave me the new shirt! And I am so excited for the new gardening season!
Agree bring in my 1st grouping for a vase was a game changer!
Yay!!!
Gladiolus and lillies are my favorites to grow and I'm falling in love with cana lillies as well.
I’ve been enjoying gladiolus the last few years too!
So excited for this years growing season!!!
SAME!
Bought zinnias, sunflowers, sweet William, cosmos seeds. Wish me luck. Thank you. I'm from southern california
Good luck! You got this!
Great video. You're getting me excited to start some indoor sowing. Thanks for all the inspiration ❤
I'm so glad!

Astilbe, columbine, foxglove, rudbeckia … these can all handle part sun and can be considered perennials!
Love your info! Zinnias are just so reliable!!!
Yes they are!
You are so uplifting. Thank you for these great words of advice. I can’t wait to begin my cut flower garden journey this year!💗🌻
You are so welcome!
Good morning, great video for beginners like me lol 😊 love zinnias too!
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video lots of knowledge and encouragement
Glad you enjoyed it!

Yep, former florist here!
Roses, dahlias, snapdragons, zinnias, cinnamon basil, hydrangeas. I’m also growing some foliage plants.
Love all of those!

Yes! Thank you! I’ve ordered a bunch of gladiolus to try this year!
I was so glad to hear that you feel the same way I feel about netting and stakes!! I also grow everything clothes together so they can support each other
Yep, much easier!
Great video. I've had success with dahlias and zinnias in containers because I have a lot of shade.
Good to know! I’d like to try dahlias from seed in containers this year.
A gateway drug for cut flowers!😂
😂😂😂
I've really enjoyed dara, snapdragons, nigella, bupleurum and cilantro for cut flowers...besides zinnias and cosmos.
Love all of those!
Great video!
Thanks!
My favorite cut flowers are cosmos and zinnias easily grow
They are some of the best growers!
I liked the intro :)
Thanks!

Good content ... Any suggestion where to buy seeds at wholesale price for bulk purchase
No idea as I don’t buy wholesale!
I am in Dallas, TX. Where is best place to purchase cut flower seeds?
I like shopping for seeds at Calloways … they have Botanical Interests and Renee’s Garden. But I order most of my seeds online … I just posted a video today about how and where I buy my seeds online.
it gets soooo addictive lollll i 250 variety seeds pack ahaah😂😂😂
It really is!
I have such trouble with Zinnia’s, the leaves dry up and look awful also they only last one day in a vase before drooping. 😕
