A win is a win. I knew there are going to be struggles throughout this season if BYU keeps winning their ok. This game reminded of BYU teams if the 80s where theiy would jump out fast to a good lead but have to hang onto that lead until the end of the game a do all they can to prevent the opposing team getting enough points of catching up!
Come on man, hard to put your pedal to the gas when your OL is makeshift midway through the game and you’re on RB3&4. This was one of those games where you knew it’d be gutsy once we were compromised in the trenches
BYU won today in more than just the score, the defense gained valuable experience having to hold strong and keep Baylor from scoring 3-4 drives at the end of the game. The offense laid an egg in the 2nd half and could not rely on any long drives so the BYU defense was on the field a ton the 4th Quarter. Some fans will will want to say their worried about the defense it gave up 28, remember you only have to win by 1 and the team as a whole is playing great football fun to watch Jay scheme to close out the game by keeping Baylor out of the end zone. Fun to watch BYU play solid football.
Sad state if we can’t unequivocally celebrate a 5-0 record in a season where we thought 6 wins would be acceptable. There is no egg on anyone’s face. All I see is a team of overachieving, hard working winners
I've been watching college, especially BYU Football for about 60 years. I know that every year about the 5th week the best teams are weaker after surviving 4 tough games. To win that 5th game is the effort that all of them want. Look at U of Utah. 5th week is no teams friend. A week off isn't necessarily their friend either. But they will be at home on 12 Oct. Hopefully some of the aches and pains will have resolved in their hit tubs. Hopefully the team will be healthy on 12 Oct. Also hopefully Arizona will have 5th game syndrome and not be as strong on 12 Oct as they were last night in SLC. One thing is for sure someone has to win. Predicting it has never been the science we like to think we understand.
I think with the core of the interior line gone it made it difficult to run the ball, and operate. The drop off from Connor to the second center was too great to sustain momentum.
Baylor did a very smart thing taking away the special teams of BYU. I recognized it when they continued to play on 4th down the first time. Smart. But I didn't think special teams would win the game. I thought they were just part of what helped the team to win. I think BYU's Defense has been the reason BYU is winning. I am sure they will solve the holes they had in Texas yesterday.
It’s probably because of what Arizona did to Utah. If BYU plays the same way against Arizona BYU could lose that game. I think the Arizona game is much bigger than the Baylor game however it is at LES so we’ll see.
@@kenmack158yep, I think Jake is going to see this and realize he was way off the mark. Especially when you compare this to Jeff Hansen's video about the game...very different. Jeff Hansen was way more level headed and insightful
This is a bad assessment of the offense in the second half. We were throwing the ball down field in the second half. One was picked. A couple drops on big throws. Then on a late 3rd and 2 we decided to throw and it gets tipped and picked. That's not prevent offense. Also had a missed fg. I think the run game died a bit in the second half and that's what hurt us most offensively. But offense puts up 34 (should have been 37) and we should win most games if the defense holds up. 5-0 is awesome!
As bad as Wyoming is they are rivals. I was expecting a dogfight like SMU. then when SMU bombed a decentTCU 66-42 then K St. I agree Arizona will give us a clue, But Baylor adjusted at the half. It's a tough league.
BYU almost had me believing in the 1st quarter but then the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters happened. The best thing about Utah's loss is that in 2 weeks we will find out if BYU is actually any good.
Yeah true, but I feel like we've heard that every game since SMU. The last 4 games have been prove-it games in some form or fashion. Remind me, what are we trying to prove now? We've already won more games (5) than we were expected to all season (4.5).
A win is a win BUT at times the offense looked great at times it looked weak. Same with the Defense at times they looked good but at times looked terrible. The offense game calling looked terrible at times. I often wonder what was Arod thinking. Great time for a bi-week, I hope we can play better after this bi-week. The practice should help.
Need that 6th win before the UCF & Utah road trip. Arizona and OSU will both be tough, not guaranteed wins. Utah has struggled in the first half against Arizona. There is a lot of parity in the top 6 to 8 teams in the Big 12.
Wakely may have started out as a "walk on" but he certainly is a scholarship player now. Same for the other starting safety. When will they be treated as the quality players they have become and not as a walk on?
Crew, yes. Vanerhar, yes. Lassiter, no. I thought Jake run and throws were spot on. 2 drops are a big deal. They changed the momentum and lost the fans when they were needed
I remember well 1983 and 1984. BYU had more wins than any school in the country. The powers that be put #3 Michigan in the Holiday Bowl with BYU. BYU beat Michigan in a tough game. I'm still disgusted by Bo Schembechler when he stood at the podium after the game and said BYU isn't a number one team. Well guess what fat man, they beat your #3 team and they would have beaten that #2 team just as handily.
I remember that well, Bo was classless. His comments before the game saying they would handle BYU, were classless as well. It was fun to watch him lose, not Michigan as a whole but, Bo. Served him right!
Last night I listened to the national media rave about the instant classic between BYU and Baylor, oh no wait they were talking about Alabama Georgia, not BYU Baylor. No team, not BYU, not Georgia, not Alabama, not Utah, not USC plays a perfect game every time out. Progress not perfection. Enjoy the journey. BYU is 5-0 just like in 84. The 84 team had multiple close calls. Kalani says it best: We’ve got a lot to work on. We haven’t played our best game yet. That sounds like coach speak but it’s the truth. How about we do a little plus delta analysis. What went well, the pluses. What would we like to see improve, the deltas. And let’s look for progress, not perfection. Finally, let’s take each game one at a time, just like the team and enjoy the journey.
2nd half play calling was either run up the middle or throw long on first down. Not a good recipe for 2nd downs and short. Prevent D is no difference than "Prevent O"--results often favor the other team and almost always lise MO--UGH!
BYU again struggled to get off the field defensively. Only a couple 3 and outs and so many long drives. Both the offense and defense are responsible. 2nd straight game giving the opposition 70+ plays. To many chunk plays given up on 3rd down and 4th down. The AROD and Retzlaff hate is fluff. This season will be defined by the Health of Connor Pay, John Nelson and Mangleson. Those guys line up each week then we go 10-2 and challenge for the confrence title. If not it’s 8 wins and the equivalent of Shreveport. The offense lost the line after Pay went down and Baylor adjusted to it at halftime. Biggest difference from last year to this year defensively is at the line, we loose that inside advantage and that road trip is going to be brutal.
Jake please go and listen to Jeff Hansen's video on the game and see why he doesn't but your "prevent offense" argument. He makes good points throughout but brings it up specifically in the last few mins of the video. You can't just look at the lack of success/yardage and automatically say it's due to overly conservative playcalling. You're way off on this one my dude!
I couldn't agree with you more, if the team keeps scoring 2nd and 3rd team players get more reps, that the team will need as the season gets longer. The prevent offense just creates more injuries for the defense as they spend more time on the field. Sitaki needs to watch old films when BYU scored 60 70 or 80 points in a game.
Lack of success was due to poor player execution in the second half not play calling. There were numerous deep route passing plays called over and over but they got zero separation. They even called trick plays including a fake punt in 4th & 11. Saying this is "prevent offense" is just inaccurate.
Jake! Kalani and Dave Aranda are good friends and Kalani didn’t want to run the score up on Dave and get him fired so he pulled back on the Rains. And then in the press conference, he praised Baylor and how tough they were, and how good they were, and how they did things they weren’t prepared for, how well Coached they were. He doesn’t want Dave Aranda fired on his account.
Completely inaccurate take. Play calling was just as aggressive in the 2nd half as the first half, it's just that Baylor's defense greatly improved and BYUs offense had injuries. They were calling fake punts, trick plays, etc...they were pulling all the stops to try and score in the second half. Wildly inaccurate to say Kalani was intentionally not scoring to try to save Aranda's job
Jake I usually appreciate your level headed analysis but I think you are living on twitter a little too much. Prevent offense? The second half was full of horrible execution not too conservative play calling. Drops, poor qb decision making, tons of missed assignments on defense. This wasn’t a problem of “prevent offense” it was a problem of losing focus.
False narrative. Play calling was the same in the second half...the execution of those plays was significantly worse. This is partially due to Baylor's defense clinching down in the second half significantly more than the first half, and partially due to the non-existent run game resulting in 3rd and longs. OL was patchwork. So you can understand why the player execution struggled. But just because the plays were less successful doesn't mean the play calling was less aggressive.
@@chase3rd1 So your argument is that A-rod's play calling was just as bad in the first half, but Baylor was worse? Are you going to rationalize throwing the ball behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 8 next?
BYU claims to have the best fans in college football so why cant these fans just root for their team as positively as they try to do to BYU's opponents? Be a good fan of your own team and support them however things turn out.
I was at the game. BYU fans showed up better than Baylor's. Except, we kind of fell quite, got worried, scared, then reached down and helped by yelling and screaming until we won
BYU fans have higher expectations than 4.5 wins. We love BYU and do support them, many of us in the stands as well as with donations, but we will not coddle these men like they are little children. Affirmation is not the way to raise or treat adults.
@@ryanaegis3544 Showing simple respect is not coddleing them. Giving respect is also recognizing that they know a whole lot more about football than the average fan does. I would hope that BYU fans would also recognize that coaching at BYU is different than anywhere else. Lots of things make this job harder. With that in mind, once you have a coach who loves the University, represents its mission well, and is skilled in his job then you should do everything you can to support and keep him. If they keep on this path, keep pushing themselves, keep learning from their mistakes, keep raising the bar and demanding the best from eachother, then come the end of the season, I will be satisfied.
Jake I love you man but this take is WAY off the mark. Please go back and rewatch the second half and look at the play calls and routes being run. The Baylor defense was SIGNIFICANTLY improved in the second half. Time and time again there were play calls with deep routes but they were covered up so Jake had to dump it off for a short gain or throw it away. That doesn't mean it's not an aggressive play call!!! It just means nothing was open. Go back and watch dude - the player execution is what changed. Baylor looked WAY better and BYUs receivers were not creating any space for Jake to push the ball. Even still, ARod threw in some trick plays to try to force some big plays (fake punt too on special teams), so how are you going to call that "prevent offense". You're better than this Jake...you can't just look at the yardage and say it's due to play calling. You can call 4 verticals but if nobody is open, dump it off to an RB, then say the play calls isn't aggressive. Rewatch the game and I guarantee your perspective changes.
Routes are designed to beat defenses. It is only a matter of time before recievers get open - not an if but a when - so the only factors are if the protection can hold and if the QB can see the open man. BYU simply isn't spreading the defense enough to expose it. And while some deep routes are run, A-rod is still caling designed plays for very short yardage on 2nd and 3rd and long, like WR screens and behind the line pick routes. A-rod's play calling looked good at the start of the game, and there are moments of brilliance this year, like Lassiter's touchdown against K-State, but A-rod has been calling these short plays dependant on a player making a man miss FOR YEARS, and it is infuriating.
Kinda a bad take with the defensive rotation. I think it is good to have a lot of depth. With this league you need it. Get healthy. Running game was nice not wonderful. But good.
I watched Lassiter at Wyoming throw his temper tantrum because, Jake didn’t get him the ball. After dropping 2 passes, he better never act like a 2 year old again.
And double clutched another. I was surprised the coaches didn't pull him and that Jake threw him another ball. With all the great recievers and tight ends we have, I sure would have given someone else a chance for at least a series.
What is wrong with you, Jake, for invoking "GD" in your comment about BYU offense?! Is that the best you are able to communicate emphatically. Shame on you. Do it again, you'll lose me as a viewer forever. I expect an apology to me and the rest of your audience.
The hypocrisy and lack of self awareness in your post is stunning. It’s so offensive for the host to say the letters G and D, but it’s completely fine for you to put those same letters in print! Had the host said the words you’re accusing him of, there’s no way you would write out the full words in your complaint. Based on your logic, you are the one who should apologize. Let’s stop looking for ways to be offended, shall we?
True or False ? As long as BYU wins ARod keeps his job. I think BYU will go undefeated since the next 2 games are home games and BYU has not lost a home game this season I say ARod will keep his job
He is definitely playing for his job. If BYU loses every game forthwith like they did last season, A-rod or A-rod and Sitake both will be fired. Sitake put his neck on the line not firing A-rod after last season. If Sitake goes, Jay Hill could be made head coach, but I wouldn't expect any of the offensive staff to stick around.
The only bad thing about going up 21-0 in the first half is that dopey BYU fans on social media start to think their team is better than they are. Newsflash: BYU overperformed in the first half while Baylor underperformed. The second half was a better display of reality. Jake, I think you know this🫵🤷
@@XIN3OHd that's what makes you a dopey fan. I bet you were on X calling for ARod to be fired and Retzlaff to be benched because Baylor started to play like they can. Some BYU fans (you?) find it hard to acknowledge that there's actually another team on the field with decent players.
The difference about this BYU team is that they continue to improve each week.

With all the great recievers and tight ends we have, I sure would have given someone else a chance for at least a series.
bYu is on a mission !!! Going to Taco Time Bowl !!!
What is wrong with you, Jake, for invoking "GD" in your comment about BYU offense?! Is that the best you are able to communicate emphatically. Shame on you. Do it again, you'll lose me as a viewer forever. I expect an apology to me and the rest of your audience.
I was taken back too.
@@gpdbceo Gosh Darn - maybe you shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
Don't be a wuss. GD is not offensive in any way. Good lord, lol.
Oh Lighten up Francis. If that's a little strong for you, you might start listening to primary songs instead. 😂
Ok Jake you’re getting back to some old habits ranting and overreacting.
The only bad thing about going up 21-0 in the first half is that dopey BYU fans on social media start to think their team is better than they are. Newsflash: BYU overperformed in the first half while Baylor underperformed. The second half was a better display of reality. Jake, I think you know this🫵🤷
Baylor couldn't get it done. BYUs defense made the play to end the game and Baylor...who was picked to win this game...went out with a loss....
21-0 was a reality just as much as the 2nd half. If you can’t accept that you won’t enjoy sports fandom very much.
@@XIN3OHd that's what makes you a dopey fan. I bet you were on X calling for ARod to be fired and Retzlaff to be benched because Baylor started to play like they can. Some BYU fans (you?) find it hard to acknowledge that there's actually another team on the field with decent players.
