    The offense was bad because the core of our offensive line was gone and we were on our 4th string running back, and Baylor has a very strong defense. BYU overcame crazy adversity to win this game, offense deserves credit, defense won the game but did have some suspicious moments (the entire first half) and special teams looked strong. Same as we just game planned wrong in the first game of the year, we had no idea they're qb could ball out this much

    Thanks for the level headed analysis. So tired of all the Retzlaff and arod hate. Definitely not the best game byu has played..yet they still scored 34 and got their first road win against a big 12 team. Huge improvement from this team compared to the last couple seasons.

    I think losing Conner Pay was a huge reason the offense sputtered out. He calls the protection of OL. That's a huge loss! They lost a bunch of players, relied on their depth, and still pulled out the win! None of these games fall BYU's way in years past. With having to rely on 3's and 4's to finish out the game, they made the win happen. They now have a bye to reset and get some guys healthy. BYU is in the best position possible 5 games in. They have 2 weeks to prepare for Arizona at home. The Cougs are a stellar situational football team so far this year. I'm ecstatic for 5-0 and am hoping to see them improve for the next game. 1 game at time! Go Cougs!

    A win is still a win. Knew that there are going to be challenges during the season. This game was like BYU of the 80s when they scored high and early and had to hold on to the lead until the end of the game and hold the other team from scoring and catching up.

    Jake had a horrific second half, as did Arod. The defense adjusted out of what was working into a soft zone, then back into what was working again. The backups that were forced to play did well.

    With all the complaining about how BYU almost let the game get away and how they escaped and blah blah blah, are we just not watching college football in America ever? Conference games happen like this all the time. Look at the Alabama-Georgia game…Bama was blowing UG out and let them back in deep into the 4th quarter and pulled it out at the end. I am absolutely not saying BYU and BU are on the level of those teams, but they are certainly on similar talent level as each other. And BYU was playing on the road where they’ve typically struggled in day games and on the road in the BIG12.
    I think we should be loving up these Cougs for going above and beyond anything anyone could’ve expected of them. Not nitpicking and complaining.

    The defense played quite well I thought. Baylor was uncanny with their NFL type catches on the sidelines on several of the third and for down plays. You can’t expect the defense to defend those plays any better than they did.

    I agree about the running game. This O line simply cannot run block.

    • @combatccc
      @combatccc หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Interesting. Perhaps. But I try to see the whole picture. The RB’s we’re using are freshman or new players. There’s no continuity there. Makes a difference.
      Also, the offensive line was decimated by injuries. Makes a difference. Lastly, they seemed to block pretty well for that Retzlaff TD run.
      Is the o line great in the run game? No. But I wouldn’t call them horrible either given the circumstances.

    The defense didn’t win it for us? I guess I missed those last three BU possessions when they had all the momentum when our offense was doing nothing…yet we stuffed them three straight times to save the win. I think I’d give the D a little more credit.

      Didn’t say that I thought the D was the only reason we won. But Jeff literally scoffed at the notion that the defense should get any serious credit for the win. Just straight up dismissive. But ya, I agree that it was a team win because there was great plays by each of the offense, defense and special teams. But three straight huge defensive stopped at the end? Thanks for educating the ignorant portion of the fan base. Complaining that the offense only scored 34 points is insane.
    Utah 23 Baylor 12
    BYU 34 Baylor 28
    So BYU’s offense put 11 more points on Baylor than Utah, with its top Center out, other top O-Linemen out, top 2 RB’s out. And still scored 34 points on the road!
    BYU’s defense was good, but not great today, giving up 28 points, where Utah only gave up 12 points to Baylor.
    Utah is a Top 10 team.
    BYU was predicted to win 4 games.
    How miserable of a person do you have to be to not feel fantastic about 5-0, the first conference road win, and a 34 point offensive performance on the road?!
    I wish these melancholic complainers would jump on the bandwagon and celebrate a great road win as fans of an overachieving team in its 2nd year in a Power 4 Conference!

    Sound reasoning Jeff! You bounced off poor execution of "a bad play called", at one point and said more on that later. Maybe what you said about playing not to lose later is where you were going with that. But what ever you call it, especially late in the game, Arod seemed to gear down the play calling, as if he had no confidence that Jake could complete a short pass to keep the chains moving. Jake had faltered, and did not look as sharp at that point, but we've seen the wrong play calls from Arod before, that one could blame for losing games like this. I said out loud after that TD pass to Lassiter, "OK Jake, I am a believer!" By the end of the game, I was questioning my statement, but if the play caller gears down because of a falter, the game is changed. I hope that is not the case!

    • @combatccc
      @combatccc หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think there should be more consideration given to the “questionable” play calls when you take into consideration that the offensive line had quite a few players playing out of position (some third stringers) coincidentally when the offense started sputtering. Remember, these guys getting in the game are not ones that have been getting all the first team reps in practice. The OC needs to often adjust the play calls based on the level of confidence in the knowledge of the playbook that these new o-linemen may or may not have.

    • @rakoto101
      @rakoto101  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah that’s what I meant and did a terrible job of calling it back. But yes… just a lot of bad execution in the second half (and I really hated that 3rd and 2 pass decision so much… beyond that, the play calls weren’t the problem. The execution was bad bad.)

  • @KirkTingey
    @KirkTingey หลายเดือนก่อน

    2nd half Baylor was determined to stop the run and did. Arod never caught on and made it easy for Baylor to predict run first, pass as last resort. When Arod white flaggs on 3 rd down you know he doesnt trust Retzlaff and is terrified of an interception.

    Continues to be baffled by the play calling. Some of these plays ARod goes to are pretty complex and take a high degree of execution to properly execute. This team is not able to do execute at that high of a level which leads to getting behind the sticks.
    First half, ARod wasn’t trying to do anything too cute or too fancy. Keep doing what you’re doing!
    Offenses need to be in rhythm but once you fall out it is hard to get it back. Stop trying so hard to be cute ARod.

    Some of us are not "fans" Jeffy. Sone if us are 43 year veteran football analysts, FWAA and analysts.
    Aaron Rodersick continues BYU' stupid 13 year long RPO tendencies to run on 2nd and 10, and then pass on 3rd and 8 parallel to the LOS and well behind the chains. Bubble screens are not cutting it. BYU has s fantastic playbook. Aaron Roserick does not know how to use it.
    How many times were his big TEs targeted? I think you need more education in the game Jeff. How often did BYU use a zone block right, but back door Jake on the run or throw on the Steve Young naked bootleg left or back door cut and pass to the RE after a WR clearout in the middle? Roderick could learn more 7seful 0lays in ine hour sitting eith Sndy Reid than he ever learned from Norm Freak'n Chow. He doesn't know how to call plays.
    Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Brandon Doman, Ty Detmer and Jim MccMahon have all commented on the l9ss of WCO prowess because Staff s8nce Br9nco thought they were smarter than Bill Walsh, Lavell Edwards, Wally English and Mike Holmgren. BYU could be a national power on offense right now. Make Aaron Roderick get back to WCO plays based in Down and Distance tendencies against h3ad counts (count the heads in the box). It works. That you don't know this is evidence of your age.
