    Definitely relate to your struggle here. Left a toxic workplace a few years ago, was unemployed for 4 months before I found my current job. It took me ~350 apps as well. Managed to get a job in a new industry, lucky to have friends and family to help me through it.

    Hi John,- I’ve been enjoying your channel and wanted to say thank you. You have a gift for talking about sensitive topics, and it means a lot. From personal experience, I know that sharing yourself the way you do can help so many people-including yourself. You’re a brave young man, and I’ll keep following and supporting you. Keep sharing what you know and staying true to yourself-you’re making a bigger difference than you realize. Wishing you a peaceful and healthy New Year.

      Thank you kindly Joseph. As I shared with another commentor, these topics are gruesome to discuss publicly, but there are many people who live in fear. I want to break that mold and share my stories with others. I have struggled so much, and I empathize for those who do as well.

    Hi John, when I got my Bachelors Degree from Purdue North Central I had to take a Statistics 300 level course. That was one of my more difficult courses so can't imagine what you had to take to get a Masters in Statistics.

      @@johnsharestories Hi John, the professor I had for that Statistics 301 course was a Dr. Kenagy. He was awesome because he could breakdown the difficult concepts so we could understand them easier. I was fortunate to get into his class, as it fit well in my schedule, as the other professor that taught the course failed quite a few students every Semester.

    Thank you for sharing your journey. I can totally empathize that. I was once in a situation where my mental health was significantly impacted by my job back then. What’s worse, as an immigrant whose visa was dependent on my employment, I had no choice but continue that job. I saw in the comments that someone said to take this video down. In my view, you didn’t share any excessive detail or make any personal attack against anyone. I don’t think any reasonable person would disqualify you from this video alone, provided that you have proven to be the best fit to that job. To be honest, after being in the industry for more than a decade, it’s far more common for people to disqualify you based on your sexual orientation or other characteristics, rather than watching this one video of yours (that’s an unfortunate fact, although no one will publicly admit it, they will just ignore your application). Best of luck, I hope things will become better for you soon.

    I also quit my job a year ago. My boss was also a psychopath. Total lack of empathy and constant terrorism because he has no self-worth drove me out of the job. I was his favorite employee, but it gave me no benefits. On the contrary. I should also be there for him on the weekend. Such a weirdo, that guy. It took me months to recover after that job. Never again! Since then, I've been careful about who I let into my life.

    From an old Playtex living girdle advertisement, I am my only visible means of support. I learned years ago, there is nothing more unattractive to a perspective employer, than an applicant that is unemployed. I have been told they will hire someone working at McDonalds, before hiring someone not working. It is not fair, it just is. If possible, never leave a current employer before firmly securing new employment. Best to you, beautiful boy!

    I work in HR - I’m glad you were persistent and applied non stop. Unfortunately jobs are cyclical and tech jobs were battered the last 2 years with massive layoff. It all moves in cycles. Sometimes it’s finance, then it’s retail, hospitality, etc. I don’t agree with the other person that commented that you shouldn’t have shared your previous employer experience. You didn’t mention a name or company so you should be fine. It’s your truth and mental health is a real problem in America and we should not be ashamed to say it . We are working on overcoming that stigma in corporate America with mental health awareness and wellness programs. I don’t think there is anything wrong with sharing a diagnosis. We don’t criticize or shame a worker for saying they have cancer or high blood pressure or diabetes. We should not shame mental health.

It was a great city for coming out and exploring my sexuality, dating, and meeting boys! I had a great time in Chicago! Basically, you are over qualified in the eyes of corporations. In addition they want to pay less and recent graduates are those that are preferred, because they are paid much less than you would be paid if employed. I had the same issue when I was in the States and I very much relate to what you are saying; I have an MBA in Information Systems. By the way, an advise would be to go for a PhD and become a professor if you have the time to do it, because stopping half way is not realistic for people like us with Masters degrees. Now, that AI is taking over most of the science backgrounds, the future seems very gloomy. Good Luck!

    • @johnsharestories
      @johnsharestories  8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I somewhat agree and understand what you are saying, but I will not be a Professor. For a Phd student, the stipend is incredibly low and barely aids in this economy. Additionally, being a Professor requires the possibility of being tenured. If you are not chosen to be tenured, then you are kicked out of the university you worked at because "your research is not publishable enough". Finally, so many positions are extremely hard to come by. Working in tech helps a lot, but it is more competitive as a result of fewer job openings and more graduates. The fewer openings is a choice companies make to solely save more money.

    As someone older than you, I offer the following advice. I'd edit or take this video down. Discussing your mental health and/or medical issues in this detail and especially trashing your former manager and/or employer in a public forum doesn't look good to a future employer. There's no upside to you in the short and long term professionally (especially trashing a former employer). As you said, competition for jobs is fierce. If you and another candidate are the two finalists for a job, and that employer finds this video, it makes it easier to go with the other candidate. Publicly trashing a former employer isn't a good look. Sorry to say that this is self-sabotage. The truth isn't always meant to be public information. Nothing speaks louder than silence. Less is more. Sometimes being right about something doesn't matter. This message sounds harsh but it's reality. Good luck.

    • @johnsharestories
      @johnsharestories  8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +9

      I appreciate that you are sharing your perspective, but I don't agree with the fear-based mindset behind your comment. My experience and truths are valid (just as yours), and I choose to speak about them because they matter. If that makes me less appealing to a potential employer, then that employer isn't the right fit for me anyway. I'm focused on being authentic and finding opportunities that align with who I am, not silencing myself to fit a mold. I had over 200 US jobs that never notified me for an interview and learned how name discrimination, nepotism, etc. make one easily desired for a position. Thanks for your input, but I will handle this my way.
