To those who say Halifax isn't for families, I have to point out what was mentioned about the short jaunt over the bridge to Dartmouth, which is a fantastic place for families (maybe not right downtown). We moved to the Cole Harbour area several years ago and it's by far, my favourite place to live out of all Canada (and we've lived in quite a few!). There are lakes everywhere, you're never more than 20 mins away from an ocean beach, and can be in the heart of downtown Halifax in 15 minutes. One other thing I wanted to point out to those considering Bedford, is the traffic there. There's a lot of newer housing and not enough road development to support the amount of cars, so it gets pretty congested during rush hours....mind you, that's still way better than any rush hour in Montreal or Toronto!

Overpriced houses, no life, near zero rentals and rubbish schools in Cole Harbour.
Prices are skyrocketing in Dartmouth, not much different. And cole harbour has a bad name to it. Ever hear of retaeh parsons? Ya. That’s the place that did that to her. Also you can’t live in cole harbour without a car. No buses can get out there within 15 minutes 🤣
@@karentinkle Yes! Prices are skyrocketing everywhere, it's crazy. And I totally agree about the transit system being terrible. I had to live for a few years without a car and it was brutal. I used to live in Montreal and missed the ease of getting around by bus and metro. I will say, however, I raised three teenage boys in this area (two of which are now adults) without any difficulties. They have good friends and we all love it here. I guess there's different sides to everything.
Halifax is not for families it's for tuns of college students from other countries and for people who can afford to live in one of those high end condominiums there constantly building

You forgot Clayton Park! It’s filled with students, families, young professionals and offers a lot of diversity. Rent is generally reasonable and offers starter condos and higher end homes. And only a 10 minute drive to downtown and is one of Halifax Transit’s main development areas. Lots of amenities and close to major shopping and the highway. ☺️

We are planning on making a NS trip from Florida in the summer of next year (June-July 2023). It'll be our first time in NS and we are excited especially after watching videos like this. We will be towing a camper with us and plan to stay at one of the RV parks surrounding the area. Can't wait! Thanks for a rundown of the different parts of Halifax.

People should keep in mind that Dartmouth is former city, not a neighbourhood. Geographically it is large, comprising many neighbourhoods that are home to diverse populations. Downtown Dartmouth (referred to in national publications as Lil Brooklyn) has a rapidly evolving feel and has become increasingly trendy and pricey. Home to some great dining, shops, parks/trails and access to lakes, it is also where many social support services can be found and transit hubs.
I like to refer to Downtown Dartmouth as socio economically diverse as opposed to sketchy and just avoid the unwarranted stigmas. The local media has a tendency to generalize any crime that occurs in a particular neighbourhood on the east side of the harbour as "Dartmouth". Having lived in Downtown Dartmouth for many years I am proud to be able to say that there is no place I would feel uncomfortable walking at any time, day or night. Downtown Dartmouth feels real and the love and enthusiasm for it is readily apparent in its residents.
It should be noted that It can be an easy, civilized and faster commute to Downtown Halifax from Downtown Dartmouth than from many neighbourhoods, even from those on peninsula Halifax and it is also easier to access Highway infrastructure to leave the city for day trips, etc. than trying to get off of the peninsula with its congestion and pinch points. And don't forget the view!
As with the Gottingen Street area and North End Halifax, my biggest concern for Downtown Dartmouth is rapid gentrification and loss of diversity, which can be an indicator of the general health of any community.

Great Video. Mostly correct. As a Haligonian with Family history back to 1749, I can say he did a good job. Some think that the North End is where he stated it is, but by definition it starts north of North street where the MacDonald bridge is. It is getting so gentrified that people like me who have had family living in the North End for generations can no longer afford to live there. My parents just moved out of this area. I cannot afford to live in my own community. I still live in Halifax, West End area. But it was a sad day when my parents moved out they were the last of a line stretching back to at least 1920.
Halifax is a great City to live in for Families. Great schools and safety. Students and Military are the highest amount in our area. Downtown is very fun for twenty somethings. Enough work for anyone. Great food and things to do.
Rent is atrocious.
I grew up in the hydrostone for 30 years, moved to the west end too! I keep telling my mother and aunt who both still own them to keep them. We'll never get them back with those prices! Everyone judged when you said you lived in the north end (I went to sacred heart for jh and hs), now the people that lived there can't afford it!
My North End sister! I hear ya! I got squeezed out of the North End, where I wanted to stay. Its a long story.
And my long family history too, since before 1900. Maybe I will elaborate later when I get the chance. Stay tuned here.

I'm originally from Halifax's Spryfield area and presently living in Western Newfoundland.
I definitely say that Spryfield is the best neighbourhood to live with numerous lakes, the rich history, a suburban like charm, community oriented people, and a community that's always changing.
Each time I return to Spryfield for vacation, I'm amazed at how much its changed in a short period of time.
Did you know that Spryfield is also home to the first Special Olympian to be inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame? If you guess me, you're right.

Quinpool Road area is the best no question. I lived on Quinpool for 3 years and I’m now in Sourh End. I miss being on Quinpool a lot. Safe, quiet but kinda crowded, very convenient, in the middle of everywhere ( a connecting point between west end, south end, North End even Dartmouth amd bedford!
I always considered Quinpool the edge of South end, kind of how North st. Is to the north end
Don't! Halifax has a massive housing crisis (mostly to wealthier people from outside of Halifax moving there, which pushes out local people), rents are spiking up, homelessness is growing, everything is very expensive and good luck finding a doctor!

what is the night life like? Is it safe to walk around at night
Having lived in Halifax for 50 years in all 4 quarters, there is really no cheap place to live anymore, unless you want at least 2-3 room mates because that is the only way you'll be able to afford to rent a place in Halifax. The rents are insanely high for what you get and there is no rent control. There is a housing crisis and it won't get any better because too many people from Ontario and elsewhere are moving here. Lots of new construction going on, but it's all ugly condos with exorbitant prices/rents. That's why I moved into co-op housing 8 years ago. At least here, my rent is based on my income. By the way, the only time my place was burgled was in the south end forty years ago.
What is the co-op situation like in Halifax? I left haven’t lived there for 30 years although I did visit regularly. With no family left there to speak of a co-op would be an ideal option. I lived in one here in Waterloo before purchasing a home and it was for the most part a very positive experience.
I'm from Toronto and purchased a pre-construction condo in Dartmouth Bedford Basin. Thank you for also showing Dartmouth side and I'm feeling much better about my investment knowing that the areas are in transition to be more urban. Love your videos as they are all informative and beautifully shot.

Where are you working Chris? In downtown Halifax? Not to dis but the suburban development in Bedford and the outlying areas impacts the limited space on the penninsula of Halifax. Live and work in Bedford? Fine.

@@cici33 HAHA!! Like my sister. She went to Dalhousie Law School and was hired by the Ontario Ombudsman Office. She has been there more than twenty years but she and her husband just bought a house in Pugwash. About a three hour drive away, And I just moved OUT of Halifax to three acres up the country between Tatamagouche and River John. Buying in Halifax was out of the question because starting house prices here are like 300, 500 grand. That was unheard of when I was young!
And another crazy thing. Properties are being bought, the house that is there is TORN DOWN to build a new modern house! What up with that?! I like old houses because I grew up in one. That my brother has now.
Its pretty whacked to wreck that for a dumb metal box that looks like a commercial building.
I lived in Halifax for 15 years and have lived in the Downtown, South, North, and West end. I preferred the South end because it was not too far from downtown so I could walk to work and events going on downtown but it was still a relatively quiet neighbourhood.
Pricey though. And for me the universities and hospitals have just trashed it. Its not the homey family area it used to be. And should be. Sleazebag developers with dollar signs in their head have it in sight.
I like Southend the most although this area is really quite expensive to rent , even an apartment..

I use to live in Halifax in the north end. Moved back to the anappolis valley. Went backpacking Europe in 2013 and randomly bumped into this guy who literally lived the next block over from where I was living on macara next to the ctv building. I started describing the house I lived at and he didnt know which house it was, until I asked him if he knew my neighbour dexter on the corner, the stories were flowing in no time. Halifax is big but still not that big
North End starts at North St. and goes North where you were talking about is considered Central Halifax !

From 2017 and on I saw the prices of everything getting so expensive, because of the massive amount of people arriving there, low wages high prices of rent ( if you can find one)

Yeah especially the last year with Covid and everything with the low interest rate housing market going on. People from Ontario with more savings and higher wages than Halifax are moving here and buying all the housing up. Wages in Halifax are still relatively low, and prices are sky rocketing. The government really needs to only allow locals to buy homes/land here, it's becoming too big of a problem.

Watching this video makes me want to move to Halifax.
When I walk into the local grocery stories and convenience stores, anywhere between 45 to 60% of the people working there are now Indian. At the Barrington Superstore (South End Halifax) that percentage is probably about 80%. It really needs to be 100% in my opinion because I really love living in a place where overnight the entire feel of the place has changed.
And don't get me started about all the historic properties they the city has incentivized be torn down. It's a super exciting time to live in Halifax! I love the feel of walking down Spring Garden Street at certain times of day and only hearing Punjab or Cantonese. Halifax is what Canadian multiculturalism was meant to be. Canadians are not like those awful Trump loving Americans.
The glorious future in Halifax is to densify, densify, densify. Even as they build homes outside the city with walk-scores ranging from 2-16% (i.e., glorious urban sprawl on steroids). And again it's so cool that that Halifax destroys older buildings rather than incentivize preservation. Before the big change (i.e., prior to 2016) Halifax has 3x the density of Portland, ME, and 2x the density of Burlington, VT. Density levels were 82% of what they had in Philadelphia at the time.
Halifax politicians and developers are doing Haligonians a favor by bringing density levels up even further with ugly, alienating high-rise buildings that are super wonderful to live around because they scream "Canada has no culture! Canada is the 'first post-racial society' (to quote Trudeau).
A few months ago, I bumped in my friend John Lawen and he was walk through my neighborhood with my other friend and developer Steve Tsimiklis (who had recently destroyed 6 historic home a block from where we live) and they were stoked about the future. John had just returned from Dubai and is hoping the city changes the zoning in the area bounded by Robie, Jubilee, Oxford, and Coburg so that he can do what they're doing elsewhere in Halifax neighborhoods - which is to say consolidating lots, knocking down homes and building bigger.
So yea, Halifax is a fantastic place to live. The people here deeply respect their history and you really get a sense that you someplace special. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has a strategic plan to double the population as fast as possible (google is your friend here), so please please come one, come all - especially if you're from India or China, or heck even if you're a cultural refugee from Toronto because the vibe here is so wonderful.
Ignore the fact that Nova Scotia's per capita GDP is lower than Mississippi and that traffic congestion is now the third worst in the country. If you come to Halifax, you'll want to ignore a lot of things. But hey, every place has their problems right?
Our firstborn graduated from university and will not return to Halifax. "Dad, why the f*ck would I want to live in a place dedicated to flooding the labor market each year with thousands from South Asia and China. You leave Canada (as he did) and you realize that not every place does this crap. It's bizarre." Our second son is studying engineering in Montreal and will not come back either. Our daughter (at Citadel) plans to follow her brothers. So where does that leave my wife and I? We'll eventually, we'll sell our home to a Chinese buyer flush with cash (Indians are not as cash rich in Canada).
Most talented, ambitious people will not tolerate living in a place so poorly governed when there are so many better places to live in Europe and the United States (despite the US's many problems there are many more places to live that offer a great deal more than Halifax.)
Canada is the only country I know that defines itself by what it's not. (i.e. not American). It's not a country, so much as a mediocre business based on 2 things: Extracting things out of the ground selling it to the Chinese and Americans. And mass immigration. (Google is your friend here my dear woke compatriots).
What are the bad reputations of Northend and Dartmouth that you mentioned? Is it about crime?

Yes! There's just a few areas you'd wanna avoid in those neighbourhoods but for the most part, it's very safe!
To point out,since halifax is a maritime city,it does have lot's of cons too,what i as a international student in SMU faced;one of the major cons being with rat's infestation severely huge,even in the vents of the dorms which are supposed to be safe but aren't,student's usually come and suffer with extra load of accommodation here even in their first few months due to the rats/bed bugs etc.

I lived in Halifax for 18 years but sold my house in the West End I had for 10 years in November 2020. I had no real reason to be in the city at all anymore and house prices got so crazy, my next door neighbour actually called me out of the blue one day wanting to buy my house. I didn't have it for sale but after a talk, we made a deal I couldn't refuse and SOLD! It's a decent place though. I didn't leave because it wasn't any good. Just took an opportunity.
I cannot thank you enough for bringing me back to all of those places 🙏🙏🙏 So cool to see especially that Gottingen Street area has gentrified so nicely. Used to be extremely sketchy... 😉😲🤫 And I hope you didn't actually live on Quinpool Road itself which is probably the busiest street in the city in terms of traffic (and noise).

I grew-up in Halifax. I moved away in 1998; my Parents retired and relocated outside of Halifax in 2001.
The neighbourhood that I lived in was nice and quiet in the 1970s, but it became rather sketchy by the late-1980s. There was a very definite increase in street crime, burglary, etc. To the best of my knowledge, the area has continued to evolve, and rising housing prices have since pushed the undesirables out.
I go back about every five years, and there have been so many changes that I hardly recognize the place anymore. Most everyone that I once went to school or worked with have moved on -- geographically or otherwise.
I live close to Halifax (15 minutes away) and I love it so much!

as some one who has been living in halifax/dartmouth my whole life i would say the best places to live are spryfield, clayton park,cole harbor, downtown(more near the MCDC center/the MNFC), down near bayers lake and also in fairview. all of them have great schools in the area (im currently going to one in spryfield), great resturants and also great diversity and places to go. the scenery is amazing and there are some beaches that are close to spryfield and also one near cole harbor that i recommend going to.
I lived in spryfield for 7 years until my boyfriend was killed by a drive by while sitting in his car. There is a lot of crime and a crazy amount of drug violance in that area. So I would definitely not say spryfield is one of the best places to live.

@@libbyissy9481 actually the crime rate is really low here. there hasnt been a murder for years, im still living in spryfield. there are about 6 schools from elo-12, losts of stores, parks and there's a library too. its perfect for a family of 4 or 5. yeah there are drug dealers, but really you can find those people everywhere so if you're saying that thats bad and you wouldnt wanna live there bc of that then might aswell just not live in canada.

Where to avoid depends entirely on your personal tolerance. I personally would not choose Gottigen Street (Despite him saying the North End is nice) as I've been harassed on that particular street by interesting people numerous times. Spryfield and Highfield Park are also areas that I wouldn't feel entirely safe as a solo female walking around at night.

No earbuds, no headphones and out in the daytime you should be OK. Highfield Park was built recently as an "affordable" low rent area but went downhill pretty quick. Crappy wood and wallboard construction.

Now becoming upper class because high income earners are locating there. And the historic Hydrostone.

we went to Halifax last Canada Day 2022 and we're from New Brunswick. On our trip we got lost for a short bit and there's one neighborhood where me and mon loved it basically it looks good. I don't know where but if I recall correctly, it's near Chebucto and Connaught streets?????

There are a lot of smaller towns dotted around Halifax, I'm curious which ones are known for crime and which are safer?
Dartmouth, Sackville, Woodlawn, Cole harbour, Bedford, Burnside, shearwater etc.
Bedford is probably the safest out of what you mentioned, especially because they have good schools and there’s a lot of new development there. If you’re thinking about Dartmouth, avoid anywhere northwest of the MacDonald bridge. Also would avoid Spryfield
I agree ^ Bedford would be the safest out of all the ones you mentioned! Personally I don’t believe there’s much crime anywhere around Halifax compared to some of the bigger Canadian cities! But if you’re still concerned, I would recommend Downtown Hali, south end, downtown Dartmouth and Bedford. Though there could be some sketchy stuff happening in downtown Hali, it never feels unsafe because there’s always a lot of people around

@@meigatronl.7813 no, it’s not terrible, but there are pockets of areas that I would avoid. It gets a bad rap because of a few sketchy sections. There are some strips of poorly maintained apartment buildings. You are more likely to get harassed or attacked in the south end around the universities and hospitals then you are in Spryfield, and in Spryfield you are only a 25 minute drive from a very popular beach!

Spryfield is way better as its has a rich history, numerous lakes and waterways, a community oriented people, and now one of Halifax's fastest growing outer city communities and suburbs.
Its also home to one of the most prolific Special Olympics Powerlifters in History, and the first Special Olympian to be inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, which is me.

Hi thanks for your support man! Unfortunately I can't give you any advise on colleges and courses because I don't know too much about it. I'd suggest watching videos from other creators or talking to an educational counselor 🙂
Dalhousie would be the school to ask as I believe it is the only school that offers a wide array of engineering courses in this province. NSCC has some very basic 2 year engineering diplomas as well as SMU. Contact the schools directly to inquire.
