      doesn't make much sense, as the most aero losses will be from relaxed rider position... That said, still a marginal gain over a more traditional endurance bike.

    I feel anything organized within cycling has gotten more serious in general, from organized rides to my own club rides. Most of the time I just want to go out and have a good ride without being around others that are taking it way too seriously. So, I've started going out solo again and loving it. Ditched my road race bikes (well, except for one) and replaced them with gravel bikes that I setup as all-road with 32c tires for road and swapping wheels for 44c on gravel. I stopped trying to kill myself, stopped worrying about the numbers, started taking it easier, and as a result I'm enjoying riding a lot more now. Occasionally, I go back for a club ride but I stick with the slower group as they're a little more easy going.

    Regarding the first topic, Sportive/Grand Fondos becoming a race, this is why I like Audax/Brevet events. Audax/Brevet events limit how fast you can complete the event, so riders will regroup at checkpoints. Checkpoints have opening and closing times, which limit the overall fastest and slowest completed time.

    • @Frostbiker
      @Frostbiker ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And brevets traditionally don't track how long it took you to finish, only whether you finished or not. This helps attract people who simply want to have a good time or to challenge themselves.

      some of the audaxes i've done refer to those riders who ride at ~15kph total and come in just before controls close as "full value riders" which i love as a way to flip the "faster = better" paradigm. otherwise people just assume the goal is always to ride faster and finish quicker and enjoy the scenery less and gurn at their stem more

    I have a Canyon “Endurace” which enables me to get in the drops and stay there. I rode a Giant TCR when I was a much more flexible younger man and could never really use the drops. So, perhaps counter-intuitively, a bike with a less aggressive geometry can facilitate a more aggressive riding position.

    • @lisapet160
      @lisapet160 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are confusing drops reachable without aggressive position and aggressive position itself.

    • @Baile_an_Locha
      @Baile_an_Locha ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@lisapet160 Far from confusing that distinction, I am highlighting it. If the geometry and setup of a bike is such that its owner has to ride around on the bar tops all day, they are not aero despite what it might say on the top tube. The vast majority of people watching GCN don’t have pro-level flexibility, but they persist in buying full on race bikes which assume they do. My contention is that their *effective* position would probably be more aero on an endurance bike.

    • @The_One-Eyed_Undertaker
      @The_One-Eyed_Undertaker ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the price of these new aero bikes don't hike in place of the sportive endurance and they offer a reasonably unaggressive geometry like Van Rysel and Cannondale. I'll be okay. Orbea and Ridley offer something like this in place of the sportive/endurance a but godamn they're so expensive.

    There is still a place for non-race sportives / fondos. I rode one a few weeks ago -- the shortest option because I had other obligations on the day -- and I rode it fast, completing the distance along with one other rider a fair bit ahead of everyone else. It was fun to go fast, even though it was a fund raiser, not a race. The bike: Italian steel, Campy 11-speed, rim brakes, alloy wheels, 25mm tires. The other guy was on a tri bike. A sportive / fondo bike is not a specific type of bike; it's whatever bike one has.

    When the industry realizes that “hot tech” is really tech that serves the needs of 90% of the riding public it might experience growth because more people will be wanting to ride more kilometers be it for shopping, commuting, fitness or racing ones mates. Aero and climbing bikes with geometries and gearing, seats, saddles and pedals suited to cruising at GC speeds are great but the average person is put off by them because they are; too expensive, difficult to maintain and uncomfortable. Plus they don’t have the ability to carry anything beyond a water bottle or two and a tiny pouch for a C02 cartridge, some plugs and a multitool. “Hot tech” should be tech for the people. In Germany I think we got an equavalant to sportives. It´s called RTF and is orgaized by local clubs anualy.
    There is a tendency even discussed by the GCN auf Deutsch guys that there are less offical races these days and less riders taking part there.
    So there are not so much potential pro rookies as there could be. Instead they are riding RTFs and other sorts events. Where you can see a tendency they are racing more and taking it more seriously.
    RTF is for RadTourenFahrt (CyclingTouringRide) but some call it RennTestFahrt (RaceTestRide). I like to go hard on this myself. Gives my the vibe of races back then.

Not cheap and the price has gone up since it came out...but I like the look over my defy...a little too costly for me now because of the configurations that they are using...I don't need all the fancy electronic shifting as I would probably forget to charge it and probably the charging wires would be very short to use would be my luck...LOL

A portion of the 25,000 were there to beat their previous times and race round - most of these were in the early waves to give them clear road, but obviously that’s not entirely possible.. plenty of crashes due to people trying to race a Sportive most famously known as a fundraising event, by people who have he nerve to ask why us average riders are there!

    In my experience, fondos have something for everyone. There is the "race group" that takes off at the gun and treat it like a race. Behind them, other groups start to form, as people settle into their own pace. Some like to linger at the rest stops and enjoy the food, and others like to have a quick stop to fill water bottles and grab some bites for the road. A fondo is what you make it. Some of those riders who are drilling it from the gun, are doing it because they are having fun, and good on them! But, if you're concerned with "what place you finished" then you should be racing.

    With many aero bikes now able to fit 30 or 32mm tyres (with wide aero rims to match), aero bikes now have sufficient compliance for amateur riders to comfortably complete a century/sportive. The compliance can come from the tyres, not the frame design. Geometry and personal flexibility are perhaps the key reason to choose between "aero" and "endurance" bikes, but judging flexibility is very subjective and ego often gets in the way.
    Meanwhile, sportive bikes are getting squeezed by gravel bikes. Why have an endurance bike, when you can just fit slick road tyres to a gravel bike?
    Thanks for bringing up this topic Alex and Ollie.

    One thing you might want to take into account is a lot of us older riders buy endurance bikes. And there are a lot of us. Also, being older, we have a little more discretionary funds, so the Trek Domane or or Specialized or even S-works are seen quite often under the lycra clad and padded tushes of us old guys. (I have a less costly endurance bike (Endurace) under my padded tush, but I ride 100 mi at a time in my 70th year on this planet.) Serious cyclist of the boomer generation tend to buy either endurance bikes or gravel bikes. Not aero or race bikes.

    #askGCNtech. Most of the online tire pressure calculators recommend pressures that are outside the minimum or maximum imprinted on the tire by the manufacturer. How do I reconcile that? My carbon fiber wheels are from one of the world's most respected brands and their on-line calculators recommends front tire pressure of 55-56 PSI and rear of 58-60. However, my tires, also from another one of the world's most respected brands, imprints on the sidewall a minimum of 65 PSI. The wheels and tires are both designed to run tubeless and the calculator has the variable for tubeless as well. I can't reconcile what is safe versus what is optimal for performance or comfort. What would the GCNTech experts do? Thanks for you input, Fog Rider.

    Haven't we talked before about the massive importance of body position for aerodynamics? An aero bike with relaxed, non-aero riding position sounds like trading 50 watts to save 5.

    • @Pastamistic
      @Pastamistic ปีที่แล้ว

      There will always be compromise somewhere. Sometimes comfort needs to take priority but that doesn't mean you shouldn't still optimize the rest of the aerodynamics available to you.

  • @mmmbetter55
    @mmmbetter55 ปีที่แล้ว

    For one thing, even race geometries are significantly more comfortable (read:taller at front) today than they were only 5-10yrs ago.
    I think people should just realize that, if you aren't trying to race, and at that, if you aren't *presently racing*, then the speed of the bike itself doesn't matter. There's something intangibly fun about riding a super fast and responsive bike, but that doesn't have to come at the expense of comfort and fit. The CAAD13 I think does this beautifully as well as a whole bunch of modern entry/mid-level bikes.
    I honestly think the Canyon Endurace that y'all upgraded is about as much bike as anyone needs. I'm building one myself

    Oh Ollie! You became (and remain) my absolute hero, when you began to speak of and show your local knowledge of Vancouver Island. I watched the show while at my home in Nanaimo, just a 200 metre walk from the beach where I frequently watch the whales, dolphins, seals, etc. BUT!! A minor gaff at the end. One does not take the ferry from Vancouver Island to Nanaimo. The fair city of Nanaimo is on Vancouver Island, across from the city of Vancouver. Worry not, many are confused by this - I'm just stoked that you knew of and mentioned us. To keep this cycling focused, I will mention that I've become a much stronger rider since moving to Nanaimo, as it is ahem, very lumpy. In a standard 40 kilometre "flatter" ride, you'll be doing at least 600 metres of climbing, and generally far more. Thanks for making my day - much love!

A 3rd finish posting race times and the list 20% compromise the casual cyclist like myself that trickle in. If there is a National Gran Fondo series in your country (US) and an amateur national championship event for Gran Fondo, aren't those races? It is a little confusing and muddled as I've seen some GF events say they are not races, yet at the same time hand out awards for fastest segment times and finish placing, which I would argue makes them races. In Italy where you have pro/semi-pros 'winning' Gran Fondos and getting awards, I'd argue those are races as well.

    Just buy a good all around road bike (if that’s what you enjoy) a good set of wheel, have a reputable bike fitter set you up in the most comfortable aero position that you can manage, then ride the bike as much as your schedule will allow. Most riders (me included) could lose more weight from the body than they could ever shed from the bike.
