- PLEASE READ this description to fully understand what you are seeing. Chicago (with Cetera) played their last show in May, 1985. The two camps were at odds for two months. Peter decided to leave the group in June. This interview was done around the last week of June. Peter's new representation had yet to announce his departure from the group. He did this interview as a MEMBER of Chicago, as scheduled. No one knew that he had quit. He ultimately gives away this secret, as the interviewer is persistent in asking questions about 'Chicago 18', etc. It was about a week later that Peter put out a press release that confirmed his departure.
This interview is very awkward. Cetera and Foster KNOW that he is no longer a member of Chicago. The funny part is that they are the ONLY one's who know this. The interviewer has NO idea.
Peter wouldn't do another interview until July of 1986. He wanted time off and he got it.

I always wished Chicago could have worked it out and Peter would have stayed. You can never replace the voice of Peter Cetera.
Agreed. I think Chicago got jealous of the Cetera and Foster relationship and Cetera probably got a little egotistical so it was not an easy situation. The fact is both parties are tremendously talented and made music that will live on for many generations.
@@tod3msn It's hard for ego to not be involved, but who can blame Peter; he had the chops and Foster new it, and the rest they say, is history. I read that Peter tried for a similar arrangement as Phihl Collins, which was to do solo albums while still working with Genesis, but Chicago wouldn't agree. In hind sight, it was probably a bad move for Chicago as Peter was very successful and Chicago kind of sank. If they could have swallowed their pride, both could have been winners theoretically. I really can't remember much of Chicago after Peter left, which says something.

@@tod3msn Peter could have had some more great songs with Chicago if he hadn't been so arrogant and egotistical; his voice is amazing; however, he comes across as quite annoying in interviews, more often arrogant than humble.
Peter tried hard after Terry died to keep the family together. But it just did not work without Terry. Terry was the voice of reason and what kept everyone grounded.

Clearly, at the time of this interview at least, Peter was still anticipating a future with Chicago. He expressed that he wanted to record another solo album and dabble into acting before recording Chicago 18 probably later that fall (i.e., of 1985). That's what he was hoping to do all along, much like Phil Collins/Genesis, but we all know what Chicago's management and Warner Bros. (the record company) did to those hopes. Chicago was never the same after Peter left, and Peter's solo career paled in comparison to his brilliant work with Chicago. In short, both sides were worse off because of the split.
Peter knew he was leaving Chicago by this point.

And the trivia question at the end, the movie that starred 4 Chicago band members was a 1973 movie entitled Electra Glide in Blue produced by their record producer, James William Guercio. It was a fine film.

To the Chicago "fans" that say the band was dead after Peter left... The band would've been dropped by Columbia records after the first few albums if not largely for the songs of Robert Lamm, and other members of the band stated that... They said he carried the band on his back early on with "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Beginnings", "25 or 6 to 4", "Saturday in the Park"... They were all written by the great Robert Lamm. Sure, they were "rejuvenated" in the 80's with Foster & Peters tunes, but this band would've never commercially ever existed without Robert Lamm. He's probably the most essential member of the band for that fact alone.

Very true, Lamm and Pankow did write many hits for the band in the early days. Then their well dried up. Peter started writing all their hits from 1976 til he left in 1985. Chicago was blessed like the Beatles to have many great songwriters within the band and somebody always stepped up to keep them in the top 40 charts until their decline in 1979, 1980 and 1981. They couldn't get back on the charts those three yrs until Foster came along to get them going again. Yeah it was only 3 yrs, but for a group that's use to getting at least one hit song on the radio each yr, 3 yrs was a long drought.
But then Robert discovered cocaine and he couldn't write a hit song anymore after that. Robert might've started their success with his writing, but Peter proved that his writing was essential starting in the mid 70s and where would the band be without Peter's voice? Robert sang about 5 of their hits, how many hit songs had Peter singing in the lead? About 90% of their total hits.

Yes, but Robert Lamm needed a frontman for the band too, didn't he? This is why they also had Jason Scheff. All of them were important, this is why it is called a band.
A band is just like a family and maybe even worse. John Fogerty has real trouble with his bandmates to the point of breaking apart and calling a lawyer upon a lawyer upon a lawyer.

Terry kath was the best guitar player I have heard...i believe Peter cetara should be getting more respect than he has gotten from his band mates. he brought the band out of the slums. Terry would have been happy with Peter cetara taking the lead. I love every single song PC sings

Chicago promised Cetera time off after the 17 Tour to work on his solo album. Then they told him, "Nope, back in the studio for 18, then out on the road again to promote it". Then they sent a messenger over with a contract and a "Sign it or Else" letter. He took "or else", and I do not blame him for a second.
I know most everyone wishes Peter stayed with Chicago, but he proved over the yrs before he left that he didn't need them. He was ready to leave when he made his first solo record in 1981. It was about the timing and after working with David Foster and making all those hit songs, he was ready. And I'm glad he did. Chicago did ok without Peter as well, Jason was a good replacement so all parties won on that one.
Cetera really didn't want to quit. The band/management forced his hand. Even when "Glory of love" and "Next time I fall " both went no.1 The record company was still trying to force Peter back in Chicago. He wasn't have it.
@@lamarravery4094 Ha! Jason Scheff, a 23-year-old greenhorn at the time, was about the worst "replacement" the band could have hired. That they chose him when they almost hired the incredible Mickey Thomas and also Bobby Caldwell remains one of music's greatest mysteries. Scheff is a super-nice guy, but musically speaking, he routinely butchered Cetera's vocal parts for more than 30 years, and his boring bass playing can't hold a candle to Cetera's unforgettable, melodically brilliant bass lines.
@@Eighties_Child Jason kept Chicago on the charts for a little while longer, and he played the bass. Bobby Caldwell didn't want to be in Chicago, he made the right choice, he was too talented to be in a band. I can't see Mickey Thomas being in Chicago either. It was all meant to be.

Terry David Mulligan is the guy doing the interview. Best known in Canada for hosting Zig Zag in the 70s-80s, and for being a Much Music VJ. He was also in the the movie, Look Who's Talking Too!

It seems like yesterdat I was watching the original broadcase of this show in July, 1985. Terry had prefaced it by saying that in the two weeks between the show being taped and aired, Peter announced he was leaving the band. As a huge fan of the band, I was shocked by this news as I watched this show.

This was big news, I remember in 1985. I remember Chicago was having a hard time finding a replacement. They were talking about Richard Page from Mr. Mister on the short list, but Richard didn't want to leave Mr. Mister. Jason Scheff ended up getting the gig, and did all right. He sang well, played bass and even wrote many songs for the band. He helped Chicago keep it rolling for another 4,5 yrs before Chicago ended their chart run.

If you're a singer, go solo. A band is not the place for a great singer/songwriter. Solo artists ARE the boss, and that's the way it should be!
Very true. And Peter's vocals just got better as he aged. He was the star, the one we paid to see to sing all those songs. He should've left after If you leave me now went to number one, but he couldn't write enough songs for a whole album back then. Maybe if he took some time off from touring he could've. But yeah, he could've been really big had heade some choices when he was younger.

Before I started listening to earlier Chicago music and watching many videos for the last six months, I thought Peter Cetera was Chicago (the early-mid 80s ballads PC did w/Foster writing did indeed keep Chicago relevant and Chicago members admit as much in the 2016 documentary). I loved Lamm's songs Beginnings, 25 or 6 to 4, and Saturday In The Park and Kath was an amazing guitarist and vocalist.
Chicago didn't want Peter doing solo albums and Peter also didn't want to travel so much so he decided to leave in late 1985/1986 (or he got kicked out, doesn't really matter). Peter said he was given an ultimatum and decided to leave (from the Manouse InnerVIEWS interview @ 14:04 in the video). The animosity these guys have for each other is sad and unfortunate. In the 2016 documentary, Parazaider (who I recently heard was diagnosed with Alzheimer's) said PC didn't like the horns. PC says in the Manouse interview that Kath and Lamm both wanted out of the band before he he did.
Wish PC would have gone to the HOF induction or interviewed on the most recent documentary vocalist/piano Lou Pardini's brother made, which PC called a "mocumentary." but it was expected. Also in this documentary, former band member Bill Champlin declined interview and was quoted/summarizing, "My mother said if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all." In other Champlin interviews, you can get that feeling he had towards Chicago.
Cetera also left the band because he actually was involved with producing the songs 🎵 writing most of (the hits) and was singing them . The band DID NOT WANT to give him credit for those things but as I say the band , that did not mean Dan Seraphine and Bill Champlin were against Cetera. They were rooting for him and Bill Champlin did sing back vocals on Cetera's 1992 album World Falling Down on the song WILD WAYS that album had the hit "RESTLESS HEART" .Also you should check out the TERRY KATH EXPERIENCE it's on TH-cam. Terry's daughter Michelle interviewed Cetera and I must explain first, Cetera did NOT HATE the horns . On CNNs 2017 documentary Chicago 50 yrs. Robert Lamm said this "Cetera didn't feel EVERY song had to have horns on them and I agreed with him" yep, Lamm said it. Now getting back to TERRY Kath, Cetera told Kaths daughter Michelle in that interview that Terry told him" I'm gonna go on my own and I'll do my own music with my own band and there will be NO F**KING HORNS on those songs. Obviously Terry had no love for the horns either. But Lamm and the horn players downplay that talking about how wonderful it was with Terry. Terry did have songs prepared and written, he was going to leave FIRST.

Cetera would've left Chicago if his first SOLO album "PETER CETERA(realeased January 1982) was a hit . He made the mistake of saying to the record company "If my album is a hit, Im leaving Chicago" and the record sabatoged and killed any promotion his album should've had. The band was lucky at the time CHICAGO 16 which came out 9 months after his solo album would not had been successful if he was already out of the band. According to an interview Cetera did with Ernie Manouse even after Glory of Love and Next time I fall both hit number 1. The record company (Warner Reprise who torched his first solo album) and the jeoulous band members. Were still plotting and trying to get him back in Chicago but he wasnt having it, he was so done with them. Somebody had PCDS PETER CETERA DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.

He went Solo, So low you barely heard from him again apart from that Karate Kid theme song Glory of Love, A real stinker imo, He probably made the right decision, Chicago do alot of touring which would suck after a while.
Peter had other hits after Glory of love and Next time I fall. The problem was despite those two 🎵 songs going to #1. He had no backing from the record company (Warner Repries) At the time. Yes, they were still trying to force him back in Chicago, even as the band recruited Jason Scheff. Also those years as a soloist, Peter lip sync his songs on T.V. He said he didn't want to go out singing Chicago's catalog that consisted of hits he didn't write or lead on , he said he wanted to do his OWN songs. Thus, he didn't hit the road with his band "live" on stage until 1995. He had about 5 solo albums racked up by then aside from the songs 🎵 he wrote/sang in Chicago. Meaning he had enough of his own music for a full concert.

A few good songs came off those albums. But if I want to listen to Chicago ballads I would rather hear colour my world, wish you were here, if you leave me now, etc any day over “you’re the inspiration”. Also a lot of crap songs on those two albums.

"Electra Glide in Blue", which was directed by the band's then producer, James William Guercio, and released in the summer of 1973. Cetera and Kath had minor but key character roles, while Loughnane and Parazaider made brief screen appearances. The title refers to the nickname of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle ridden by the main character, an Arizona highway patrolman played by Robert Blake. It was a good movie highlighted by great scenery.
Electra glide in blue. If you can make it to the end there is an excellent Terry Kath song as the final credits roll.

I mean nothing against Terry but he didn't write very many hit songs for Chicago. Most of their big hits were written by Pankow, Lamm, or Cetera. I think Danny Seraphine wrote as many songs for Chicago as Kath did that I like.
It was already heading there before Kath's death.

Robert Lamm had already done a solo album, "Skinny Boy", over ten years earlier.
I was surprised to hear Kath was going to put a solo album out. None of his songs he wrote for the band were hits. He does have a good Ray Charles voice going on and his guitar skills were awesome. But Peter definitely deserved to go solo. He had everything going for him, his voice, looks and songwriting.
@@lamarravery4094 I saw a documentary on Kath...with the band shifting to more ballads and plays to the radio, Kath felt he was losing his place. So all signs point to him contemplating a solo project of some sort. It might have worked for him...considering it was the late 70's, when there were rumblings of people wanting 'real Rock&Roll' back with Bob Seger and the like. Kath would've fit right it.

You should watch the documentary “Now more than ever. The history of Chicago” among numerous interviews regarding Peter Cetera and his acrimony with the other remaining founding members of Chicago.
Oh stop, most of it is tongue in cheek and it was also during a time when no one else in the band was writing or singing anything worth a crap. People hate facts when they don't coincide with the fantasy they have of their favorite band.

They gave him multiple chances but he just couldn't do it so they fired him. I don't know if he was having health problems or what. That's what was said in the documentary. However true that is idk

It took Peter awhile to gain the self confidence he needed to go solo. He was still crafting his songwriting in the 70s. But he was ready back then, he could've been successful in the 70s by himself.

I think you need to go back and listen to those early albums, Robert Terry and James wrote 90% of the music and although Peter sang some great songs he was just another guy in the band! So no he did not carry the band all through the 70s far from it

Then Peter started writing hits as well, starting with Lowdown, then Feeling Stronger Everyday and Wishing you were here then the mega hit If You Leave Me Now and Baby What a big surprise. Yeah, he carried the band from the mid 70s until he left.
I really do not think he had that great of a solo career.....I am surprised though that the FAKE Rock and Roll Hall of Fame kept out Chicago for as long as they did. Example...Cheap Trick had like 3 songs in the Top 40, Chicago had about 60 songs, yet Cheap Trick got in way ahead of them......Chicago had more hits than almost anyone except the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Cetera and Chicago seem to be egomaniacs without a reasonable person to steer them in the right direction. Maybe that was the late Terry Kath. Bono keeps people in line and the great leaders of a group do that. I don't think Chicago had anyone like that. At least they never were cut-throats and dysfunctional like CCR. Example two...Isaac Hays had one hit and was in the RR Hall of Fame about 10 years before Chicago. Like Johnny Rivers and Boston, Chicago's greatness was taken for granted. None of these solo guys ever do that well alone.
One of the horn players said their band was a democratic band with no one leader , don't think that's the way to go in a band , especially one with as many members as Chicago had. Now with the Eagles, Feldman resented Glen & Don as the leaders , he wanted everyone to be equal but I think in the end, it's better to have a leader. I sure didn't realize the egos of these men played such a big part in the decline of this band.
Actually Cheap Trick and Chicago were inducted the same yr, 2016. But yeah, Chicago should've been inducted in the 1990s. If they were inducted in the 1990s, I'm sure Peter would've performed with them and who knows, maybe a reunion album could've happened. Stupid Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Cetera is pretty well-known in private, on-stage, out on the sidewalk, in interviews and in the studio for being a cut-up, kind of zany and goofing around, especially when he’s up-beat and in a good mood.
It’s almost ‘hard’ for him to be serious, and he casts that ‘over-excited’ , geeky vibe. I’ve known other men that way, but maybe only 1 I know of, out of several, is homosexual, that I can say with certainty.
hey chicago kid,,dont know if u know this,,but cetera got an ego toward the end of his days with the band,,and david foster was a big influence in it. david foster was rather 2 faced,,he wanted to manage bolth chicago and cetera. i just seen a mini documentary on all this. Dacus was fired, and was replaced with other guitarists. then chris pinnick came along,,with lyricist/singer/songwriter bill chapman,,who penned most of the hits on "17". danny seraphine tried to take over as a manager of the band,,to witch he was IMMEDIATELY kicked out of the band for. then they hired Jason Cheff to replace cetera. they endured alot of termoil from 1983-1988. then they released 18,,to witch the record company flipped out,,calling it junk,,lousy,,and the band thought highly of it. these guys went thru hell,,but came out in heaven. but to me,,without Kath and Cetera,,the soul of the band has died off.
EXTIQUE what are you talking about when you say Danny was “immediately kicked out of the band” after 17? Dude was with the band almost five years after 17 before they fired him. There may be a shred of truth in most of your rambling, however, you might be better served shutting your mouth until you get all the facts straight. The Kid likely knows more about the band then anyone posting here.

And Champlin didn't write most of the hits off of 17, it was Cetera and Foster. However, one song, Remember the Feeling, was written by Champlin and Cetera, was a hit sounding song, but was never released as a single.

Growing up in the 80s, the new Chicago sound was top notch. David Foster focused on Cetera's talents to make many hit records and it worked, while the rest of the band were not used as much. In fact, Foster brought members of Toto in the studio to make the Chicago albums, that was probably really hard for most of the Chicago members to take.
I’ve never understood Cetera’s ego, really. He acted like he was Chicago when, in fact, if Foster hadn’t come in, Cetera’s songs still would have sucked as badly as those on 13 and 14. James Pankow, Robert Lamm, and Terry Kath spent a decade writing the bulk of their hits.
Name one hit that Kath wrote. I can't think of any. Lamm and Pankow wrote the earlier hits, then look out Cetera started to write the rest of the hits. Loughnane wrote a few and even Seraphine wrote some songs that were good, but weren't hits.

14 was absolutely horrible. I thought at that time, these guys are done. 16 & Foster put them back on top. Centers was lucky enough to have Foster write some great songs that he sung. His solo career wasn’t/isn’t all that, unless you like his duets with whomever.
@@lamarravery4094 He was the only singer who never even had a song chart in the Top 200, which I think is pretty cool. I like all three lead singers of Chicago (with Laudir - VII and VIII are my favs).
Terry Kath was the voice of Chicago and the most talented of all the other musicians. Peter Cetera and David Foster screwed Chicago over. Chicago kicked Cetera out. He became bubble gum music.

Peter made Chicago successful again. He is the voice of Chicago. 90% of their hits were sung by Peter, and that's a fact.
More like THE 80'S killed them. They knew they were going down murky waters with the way music was changing across the board. Add to this the fact that they were signed to a label that didn't know what to do with these "aging rockers". So they had to concentrate on the surest bet that they had at that point--The Pete Cetera ballads--in order to survive.
The 80's were not kind to a lot of great bands.
Terry Kath was one of the voices in the band but Peter was "THE VOICE" of the band period.

Sue Dobinski I used to idolize David Foster. Hes such an arrogant prick. Extraordinary Producer but his arrogance put me off after watching his overinflated sense of self importance in the Chicago Documentary. Terry Kath wouldve wanted to slap them both.

Foster convinced Cetera to leave Chicago, which was probably for the better, as Cetera's ego was now so big, it had no room for any of the other members!.Cetera had a little success as a solo artist, but nowhere near as he did with Chicago!
