I agree, using the preamps like I would use drive pedals in a 'normal' setup is by far the best discovery I have made during the 3 years I have been using Helix.
Using the preamps as a gain stage takes some fine tuning but I love how they shape the final result. Something I like to do is use a preamp model and run it into a Tube amp.
I never would have thought of that. Like I said in the other video I hope modelling platforms go more in this direction, closer to modular synths, where you can dive into the nitty gritty and design your own fx and amp circuits. That was really cool.
What a great tone! I have had my pedals going into my HX Stomp with a Litigator preamp then into the front my amp for quite a while now, love the feel. Just makes all the good stuff more prominent!
Sounds great, and much more "real" to my ears. I've recently started tuning down my HX Stomp Cab High Cut from 8kHz to somewhere between 3-5kHz to match Real Amp Frequency Response Specs. The sound now in my Monitoring Headphones "feels" more like how a Real Amp sounds, as the low frequencies are much fuller, and the tone has more impact. I remember you made a video some time ago about using a Preamp Block to act as a kind of Boost Pedal in the Line 6 Helix Modelers. I never got around to trying it, as I was still trying to get a better grasp on to how my Stomp worked. I feel much more comfortable with the Parameters and what to expect, so Brian Wampler's article and your explanation makes a lot more sense to me. It's great to have another tool to help us dial in the "real amp feel." I'm having a lot of fun too. Thanks 😎

BTW.. The tightest amp on the PODGO thru the font of an amp is the CaliIVLead. Just saying... For anyone who cares . its very satisfying. P.S. no drive needed.. Playing through a solid date. And wow. But as all us modelers know... This may be only for one night of playing. WOW, but I am also still loving the Bogner Mahaddeva.. Wow thought
10-10-0 is how Paul Gilbert sets any amp, apparently. These settings you're doing makes it sounds to me way more like what you where getting with the Boss GT-00, btw. Sounds brilliant!
Dude I LOVE the Bogner Mahadeva amp. For high gain... You should too. Exploit it. Stupid spell corrections made me anxious whilst my guitar feedback.... Fukney awesome😊
I’ve noticed you put a reverb after the amps but before the speaker. What’s the reason for that? I’m curious bc I’ve been doing reverb at the end and then an eq at the end of the chain as well and putting all wet effects in a split path after the amp. Just trying to experiment and wanna know your thoughts. Great playing and video man :)
I mean, you could make a donut in front of a Helix preset sound good, but I agree that sounds pretty cool. And the comments here suggest others may have been trying this as well. Ineterting.
Interesting idea worthy of investigation. I wrote a big engineering response which I deleted. I'll just suggest that you'll also want to investigate this at SPLs that you're going to use it due to the Fletcher-Munson curves and the effect of SPL on how the ear hears at different frequencies. Keep it up. Great videos. I enjoy them all.
Interesting. Guess they're are no established 'rules'.. except trust your ears. People still finding fresh ways to get more out of established digital technologies. With this and the trending eq-amp-tone-matching techniques, plenty to try out on Helix.
Fantastic edge-of-breakup, highly touch-sensitive tone, John. This reminds me a bit of the idea behind the new Revv "Tilt" overdrive. It has a boost stage before the overdrive with a tilt EQ, so you can adjust what's going into the overdrive to emphasize the lows or highs (or be flat, of course). David Wallimann interviewed Shawn Tubbs about it here: th-cam.com/video/3aSn4s0V2V0/w-d-xo.html. -Tom
The Fractal units are unique in that manner, cause in the preamp section you can add a ts, boost, eqs and ALL of the shenanigans, sag...Its Just amazing. What a great time to be a guitar player 🥹
Preamps might be the best "drive" pedals in the Helix. The Trainwreck one is rowdy

What a beautiful jam, I forgot why I even opened the vid, I'm just enjoying myself.
Beautiful intro jam; the cascading descending lick at 2:34-2:36 was particularly pleasing.
Sounds great! Yes, into the folder please.

This is brilliant. I just tried this for my clean sound in front of my Revv D20 amp (instead of using a compressor...). It sounds beautiful! Thanks!

@@picksalot1 thanks!!!
Masterful camera work there John, it's cut off from nose down half the time
Tone is in the chin
Definitely would like an HX stomp version in the folder ! Cheers John

Nice playing! Great phrasings!
Great playing!!
your playing is so beautiful. i need to start learning theory. damn.
I had to let my helix go to take down a 150 foot dead hazard tree but I just picked up a stomp. Thank you for what you do.
Hope that tree came down safely?!
@@johnnathancordy For $1,800 US it had better! Cheers.
Love your new profile-pic t-shirt btw LOL!
I just got a blues driver this year. I'd be curious to know what your settings on it or and where you put it in the chain

I love your videos. Can’t wait to try this. What is the folder and how can I access it?
Sounds Huge!

Hello John,is the clean preset at the start of the video ,in your preset pack ?
Fine, guess I'll try it.
the mids are well stacked
Sounds epic

Why aren´t you in Spotify?!?!?!
Is your guitar input Jack in upside down? Why?
I think it's just an angled cable.
🤣🤣 he is using a 90 degree plug. It's not upside down.

There’s nothing in the folder, mate
😎👍
Too much efforts just to replicate a specific sound, in these case I put the real deal pedal in front or in the fx loop of my HX stomp
