The first time I saw the trucker’s knot used was about 40 years ago when my father-in-law, a tobacco farmer, used it to tie down the fully loaded tobacco baskets for his trip to the tobacco market. I was blown away by how simple and secure they were. I have probably used that knot at least once a month ever since in all sorts of situations where I need something truly tight and secure. Such a cool knot, you feel like you’ve learned a magic trick it is so amazing.

Great stacking of wood...everything is tight. However, the knot you called the "Trucker's Hitch" is really a slip knot or loop knot and can be difficult to undo when the time comes to do so. As a rigger for the U.S. Navy for many years, we get reprimanded for using such a knot.
The true trucker's hitch is what I use to tension a load. It is tied by looping the free end of the rope over the bight of the rope, form a loop of the bight up and lock with a half hitch, lock again with another half hitch for safety, then pull down on the free end to tension the rope, tie off to secure.
As a clueless weekend DIYer, I am slightly less clueless. Thanks!

Great video, thanks.
One tip - when you tighten the knot it's worth standing on the ground and pulling downwards by bending your knees.
That way if the rope should break you'll just squat down.
If you lean backwards to pull, especially when on the door cill, if it breaks you're going backwards towards a nasty spill.

I'm in the contemplation stage of building a small boat and I was trying to decide if I wanted to pay a delivery fee or rent a truck. I have plenty of rope so now I think I can just use my SUV and bring the wood home on the roof.

@@RusticDavid Thankfully my corsa car allows a roof rack. I been looking on ebay,way cheaper compared to the street price. At the moment, I am looking, hopefully, I be able to get a rack at a cheap price and capable of heavy loads. However, I probably will get rachet straps as it will be easier to tighten. Question, has your wood ever came off the car and what is the fastest speed you travelled with the wood. Did you notice you car take longer to accelerate with all the wood sheets on top??
mumihp Hi no I never lost a load and I keep my speed down 80/90 kmph with a lot of material yes you can feel it in acceleration if you have thin plytfor cupboard backs sandwich it between thicker material so it doesn’t catch the wind and snap
Ahh the indispensable ole' trucker's hitch. One trick I learned, if you put the free end of the rope TWICE through the hole, you'll get a line that holds it's tightness without slipping. Then you don't have to hold the rope while you tighten the last knot.

tutorial starts at 1:30. I used this wraparound method myself, until I discovered that it's the exact same forces as if I'd put it under the load, then pull a bight on each side toward the middle of the load, and hook the bight around a carabiner, s-hook, or something, then finish off the same way as in the video above. Saves about half the rope for those bigger loads.

Thanks for the video. It’s given me the confidence to go and buy some plywood and stick it on the roof. Just wondered if you’ve tried the ‘automatic trucker’s hitch’. Very similar, but self locking. I wondered if you have any thoughts on it.

Hi put some padding between the ropes and the picture frames like cardboard or carpet to protect the frames check it is all secure and drive safely Best wishes David
@@RusticDavid thank you. I have a moving blanket and twin. And we will use a peg board under the paintings to keep everything flat.
We first packaged the paintings then we put a pegboard of plywood securely to the rooftop to keep the paintings flat. Then we attached the paintings and secured that to the rooftop. We did have a roof rack. The roof rack was only two sided, but we were able to move the painting securely my husband understood how to make the knots. Thank you. it did take time to do this next time I hope to rent a van.😉

I would love to see a video strapping from the front and back end of the car! This was very helpful but my car doesn’t have a rack nor is it an suv like that one. Any video or suggestions on how to strap sheets on a bare roof? I currently have a regular size car (Nissan 2005) and I will be transporting sheet for a 12 hour drive. Want to make sure I’m securing it properly
Hi Sub all i can suggest is : roll two blankets into “bolsters “ and place them on the car roof one forward and one at the back this will level the curve of the roof , if the sheet is thinner than 12mm or half an inch I suggest you either cut it and transport it in the car or sandwich it between two thicker sheets,ok so now lay the sheet material on the roof it should be touching the blankets front and back and close to the roof in the middle,or open all the doors or windows and tie your ropes or straps through the car pull everything up tightly using a truckers knot or ratchet strap colse windows or doors check the load is secure before and during your journey good luck David btw check local laws before driving like this it may not be legal everywhere

Hi I like cord but it works with any rope 12mm diameter is strong and easy to tie use new cord/rope and keep it out of direct sunlight when not in use check for any cuts knots fraying and replace if you find any

We need to make aviary cage with wood and net. Plz create a video which tells about how to create gates. And how can we make cage which has only two sides and it will get support of concrete wall from two sides. How can we fix sticks with wall using cheapest setup.

Lord Panda cold is relative summer here is 30/35 degrees centigrade from may to November then the “winter “ is 9/18 degrees which feels cold to us.without my scarf i am cold and get a stiff neck , Thanks for commenting, tie your load securely and drive safely

@@RusticDavid gonna build a farm table via plans on ana white's page. i was ecstatic tho being able to get all the wood on the car w/o having to have/rent a truck. i simply cant justify the cost of having a truck since i would only use it every few months or so.

If I need to buy 20 2x6 10 feet lengths would this be safe to use this technique? There is nothing on my car roof right now.
Hi Samuraioodon , its a heavy long load , you must have a roof rack with at least 2 meters or 6 feet between the bars so there’s about a meter over hanging each end . Then everything depends on the roof rack being strong enough to hold the weight and it must be securely attached to your car . Don’t take any risks loosing a load on the road can be fatal for drivers behind you
Splitting it into two journeys will lighten the load

@@RusticDavid thank you David. It's a 3 mile drive one way. My car didn't have predrilled holes in roof. I decided to just rent a truck at the store. If I do this enough times I may invest in an actual rack.
For a couple of boards you can use a soft rack for surf boards
Every car doesn't have that rack to sit boards on top

Hi Erin without a roof rack I would suggest asking the wood yard to cut the wood to smaller dimensions so you can transport it inside your car or get it delivered , be safe. Best wishes David

@@RusticDavid No doubt you've been very fortunate for the last 25 years but that doesn't change the fact that your technique isn't very dangerous. I just wanted to put that out there so someone who may not be as fortunate doesn't kill someone. Cheers.

@@RusticDavid I would recommend using ratchet straps and securing the boards both side-to-side and front-to-back. But ultimately, I would recommend using the proper transport equipment like a truck or van...or have material delivered.
Fellas, the cinching down seems to apply plenty of friction to the ply sheets, in my view, but I still always throw a line over the ply ends, tied off to the rack. Simple and easy insurance, no fuss.
To anyone reading this to learn how to tie down your materials...please also INCLUDE A FRONT TO BACK TIE DOWN!!.....maybe he has not had any issues but there is always the first time and that could cause someone their life and he knows how to tie the knot and isnt just learning...especially if you arent familiar with knots. If you dont make it tight enough or make the knot wrong you can kill someone...and then go to jail!
Just recently I was following a tractor and trailer and the truck lost a 4"x4"x5' piece of wood. Luckily it fell off in between highways when he was on a on ramp.....if it held another 30 seconds and he made it onto the 3 lane highway it could have led to a major life threatening disaster.
I bet that trucker has been tying down loads everyday for years on a trailer designed to have loads tied securely but it still happened.

I have 4 boards 244cm x 120cm. What if I just tie them up together and put a brick on top, will that work? Will they fall or move?
Hi junior I wouldn’t suggest transporting your sheets if they are not securely tied down to a good roof rack if that’s not possible ask about a delivery from your wood yard
Be safe don’t take chances these boards sheets could cause serious injuries or death if they fly off your vehicle!

Beware tailgaters.
No self respecting truck driver would secure a load using that slip knot technique. The chances are, especially with larger diameter rope, that the slip knot will bind so tight that the only thing you can undo it with is a sharp knife. A proper truck driver's hitch is actually what seamen once called a sheepshank or a half-sheepshank. Done properly, once the tension is taken off the rope, the hitch will almost untie it's self.
Thank you tombstone if you tie the loop correctly it will not slip closed ,from my time working on dive boats fishing boats and luxury yachts a sheep shank was used for shortening a line and as you say once the line was slack it would virtually open itself, i would be happy to learn another technique maybe you can direct me and others reading this to a video showing how to tie a load with a sheep shank as I cannot think how to use it for tying down a load Have a great week David u

Hi today I used the simple option in the video you sent to tension the guy ropes on a 17 meter by 10 meters shadow net on 5 meter poles it worked great Lean something new every day thanks again David
@@RusticDavid I learned the "Truckies hitch" as the "wagoner's hitch" in high school from my high school girlfriend's father. This guy's method is superior to what I'd learned. If you really liked that, you should check out th-cam.com/video/U7E05Xu_NhE/w-d-xo.html. It's really nice! I actually used that variation to lift the roof of my barn using 550 cord.
