It'd be easy to overplay the caricature , but i've met many men of a certain age with stories of the old days, a harsh outer, but some real emotion when they open up

Not a fan of Coogan but Saxondale was sublime. Had both seasons on my phone for years. The coke snorting scene talking about railway gauge standardisation had me on the floor.

I loved the first series but it felt like people didnt get it so they partridged it up for series 2. Nighty night went the same way. Uk Comedy all went a bit ropey until Gavin and Stacey came out.

I think a new series where Saxondale launches himself as an independent candidate when the local MP has to step down following a sex scandal, would be great to watch. And only marginally less bizarre than current reality.

Can't stand Coogan's loony political leanings, but isn't it about time the man was knighted? The quality of his writing, the perfection of his performance, high level consistency. Saxondale is a brilliant creation, so different from Partridge you forget it's the same actor. In a hundred years he will be revered as we revere Peter Sellers today.

I like alot of Coogan's stuff but Saxondale still grates for me and is his least funny character.
The Color Climax Corporation skin mags are a sneaky reference to child porn (Danish company CCC was the largest producer of legal child pornography in the 1970s).
*PS: DID YOU KNOW:* His Badgesty Lord Sir Doctor Brian _"Bri"_ May (MBE, OBE, PhD) accidentally invented speed metal in 1974, by playing lead guitar on the track _'Stone Cold Crazy'_ so fast that everyone thought it was a sped-up recording, but he wasn't trying to push the Red Special into the red zone. In fact he wasn't even aware that he'd broken the former landspeed metal record (while using a six-pence piece as a plectrum to boot), and invented a new genre of music entirely by mistake, however he _was_ extremely apologetic forever after, culminating in a 33-year tour in support of his one-man tour: *_BRIAN MAIDEN: THE MAN INSIDE THE SPEED-METAL MASK,_* in which he impales himself within an Iron Maiden spiked-coffin sarcophagus every night and proceeds to defile Queen classics in the style of Iron Maiden, and Iron Maiden classics in the style of Queen....everyone loses.

I absolutely loved Saxondale. Found Tommy a much more sympathetic character than AP.
I think that the success of AP was detrimental to the success of Saxondale. Will always have a fond place in my heart for it.
Coogan himself said the difference was AP was an irredeemable unlikable man with no self awareness but Tommy, although similar was aware of his shortfalls and trying to be a better person.
