She pulled the Russian economy out of its grave, extended their borders over 200 thousand square miles. Yes her foreign policy was not great, but for the time period, nobody cared for a diplomat anyway, and serfdom was a part of Russian culture that was before Catherine's time and exceed somewhat after hers as well. The Regime makes Winslet's character a bit of a self aggrandizing twit, Catherine the Great is neither.

I binged the entire series while on a 7-hour flight and let me tell you. The balance between a comedy and a political thriller is constantly shaking, the photography is something spectacular like in The Handmaid's Tale, Kate Winslet nails her role, from the speech pattern to the tiny facial expressions like her lip moving to the side when she's being passive aggressive. This show is a gem and I'm sad it ended but that ending was perfect.
Really good series, I really enjoyed it. Kate Winslet did an amazing job, I really felt her portrayal and I found it authentic, the range of emotions, and delusion really sold it. Matthias Schoenaerts (having never heard of him) did a great job, from being confused to taking control, from trying to appease, to dominating, he did great, I really felt sorry for Corporal Zubak because he was really a pawn. You could really see everyone around Elana trying to do their best with everything falling apart and you could feel their fear along with the boy and his mom seeing the writing on the wall and escaping.
I am actually shocked by the unfair RT critic reviews… it’s really not that bad. I thoroughly enjoyed the show’s uniqueness. Only about 100 critics on RT and IMDB have given their reviews, which is strange because usually there are several hundreds. Wish the others would come down from the fence and give their verdicts. Re Matthias Schoenaerts, I’m glad I’m not the only one who took notice of his performance in the series. You should really see this Belgian actor in ‘Rust and Bone’ (with Marion Cotillard) and ‘Bullhead’ (the unforgettable elevator scene). I respect him a lot as an actor.

This started strong, I felt it was going to have a light comedic sense, a la Veep. But it got dark and off track. Finished it, but seemed like homework. Winslet is excellent.
